As for how overly animated he is, that's just because of plot and the comedy I suppose. People compared the anime to Yokai Watch or Steven Umiverse, but neither Nate or Steven react that wildly

This right here. Satoshi's weird redesign has nothing to do with SM's "animation style" as a whole. You could put someone like Mao in XY without any issues, but for some reason Satoshi needs to be super wacky and animated and weird looking all the time. That's not animation style.
