It's kind of funny when you realize May paved the way for every female lead who came after:

- First new female companion and with her own goal
- First coordinator
- First beginning female trainer who was shown choosing her starter
- First girl who didn't know what she wanted to do before she became a coordinator
- First girl who didn't like pokemon

- First girl who did a good amount of battling in the series
- First girl who cried when she lost a contest

When you stop to think about it nearly all the plots the writers did with all the girls who came after all originated with May, they just did them again with slight variations.

It made sense that Alan would win though. We saw how powerful he was his development. Comparing this to a complete asspull last minute character like Tobias it sure as hell was better than the DP league ending. The difference is the audience was built up to see Ash beat Paul, not Tobias. So beating Paul settled the 4 year storyline of DP.

In XY, Alan was being built up as a main rival similar to Paul or Gary, so we sort of expected him to win, not lose again and never beat him.

Not really. Shota had more development as a rival even. Ash had no real main rival. He just had several rivals. Ash and Alan were only two trainers that saw each other as worthy opponents. Alan himself never saw Ash as a rival and Ash saw Alan as a goal the same way he see a gym leader.

It really bugs me Misty and Brock will forever be the longest lasting travel companions of the show. I feel like the anime suffered for it too, because the writers barely did anything with their characters after Johto began and all they did was function as sidelined exposition characters with the bare minimum of focus.

I don't know what it was, but it seems like the writers never really cared about giving Misty/Brock any focus or development outside of the odd filler episodes they got once in a blue moon.

If Ash had a Clefairy imagine all the "Ash is gay" jokes since 1998 people would have made because of having a pink puffball with him all the time. Especially back in the late 90's when being gay was considered "bad" and you were called a faggot for it.

Nowadays LGBT people are more accepted in society.

Ash himself has always gotten a huge amount of hatred from people, but I imagined most of it was from people who hated the anime to begin with or expected Ash to be this "badass trainer" who captured every pokemon and every legendary and evolved all his pokemon instantly.

I remember people saying this even back when Kanto was airing in 1998.

No. The main reason why Ash gets literally any hatred at all is because he released his Pokemon and never won the League.

That's where all the criticism stems from. Ash was seen as a badass until that stuff happened, and then Unova just worsened things. It's like every few years something comes up that gives people more reasons to hate Ash.

On paper he's literally the most likeable and perfectly written shonen main character. He isn't flat, he's entertaining, he can be a self insert for people, he isn't a mary sue and he has flaws and finds a better way to get over his problems without power of friendship bullshit that most shonen suffer from.

I guess the witers think since they hit such a jackpot of a character they have to give people some reason to hate him, so lets have him get rid of his strongest and most likeable Pokemon every once a while and never have him achieve his dreams.

It's also mainly the fact that the original fanbase became teens and then adults and outgrew the show, and they got angry that Ash is still the same dumb 10 year old kid from two decades ago instead of growing up with them.

Most of the original fans were becoming teens around late Johto and the beginning of Hoenn, that's when people were also in their edgy "Pokemon sucks now" phase and thought they couldn't like the franchise anymore because they went to middle school.
