Q: From the very beginning, XY comes across as if we're looking at Satoshi from Serena's point of view. Whose idea was this?
A: I believe this originated from something Shukichi Kanda said at a planning meeting; "Wouldn't it be interesting to have a female lead like this?". It was then proposed that we could do a scene where Satoshi and Serena met in the past that had romantic implications, and then we went off that and developed things from there.
Tetsuo Yajima(Storyboard Director) did not know exactly how long the series would last, only that it would have to end when the next games came out.
Alan(Alain) was always meant to be part of the main series. The reason the four Mega specials were made was because it would be difficult to set up his backstory and development in the series itself, so he came up with the idea of giving him his own episodes that could establish his character. The idea to give these episodes a mega evolution theme came later, and was also his idea (so they were not made for the purpose of marketing megas, or in order to test the water for a series with another main character or any other such theory). Also, Alan is meant to be an "Anakin Skywalker-type character", someone who turns to the dark side to protect those he loves.
Ash's XY design was primarily Yajima's, and the idea for his sideburns were taken from "a character from the video games named Red, which Ash is based on".
Yajima wanted to make the bond between Ash and Greninja a major part of the story, but felt it would be difficult to do so if it had to remain a Greninja, so he went to Game Freak, and they came up with the idea of a synchro transformation. It was put in Sun/Moon afterwards, but was created during this discussion between anime staff and GF.

The interviewer notes that Oak didn't appear at all outside of episode 3, and that Oak's lecture segment getting replaced with PokeTV when XY&Z started meant that Oak didn't appear at all throughout all of XY&Z (the interview was conducted before XY&Z47 had aired) and asks if there was a reason for this. Yajima confirms this was a complete oversight, not something intentional. Presumably this goes for other callbacks to older series as well.
When XY&Z started, Yajima knew that the series had to wrap up everything in only a year, and they did a meeting to basically set up how the events of that year would go. He also specifically says that this is the reason there's minimal filler in XY&Z, there was absolutely no room.
Yajima wanted to drop the use of stock footage completely, but this wasn't possible to do, so they went with creating stock foreground footage that could have different backgrounds added to it instead.
One of the things that makes XY and XY&Z feel so new and refreshing is how Ash is depicted as a very gallant and dependable boy, one that Serena admired and had a crush on even before they started traveling together. It's precisely because of these people that Satoshi and Serena's farewell scene in "No End to the Zeros! Till the Day We Meet Again!!"(The last episode) has become so famous.

Axew is her best friend. He is a dragon type Pokemon. He is small and green and cute. He is loyal to Iris and wants to make friends with everyone. One day he will evolve, but for now he is happy being happy and small and cute. Axew isn't in a rush, because he knows he'll accomplish his goals no matter what.

Everyone loves Axew because he is always friendly and pleasant to be around; no one has ever been angry at him, because he never does anything wrong. He is best friends with Iris. He lives in her hair because it is comfortable but it also is nice and he enjoys the smell. Iris always uses nice shampoos that dragon types like him like. He makes little furniture out of her hair and has a little hair house. He has a hair table and a hair chair and a hair bed and a hair washing machine. He knows it isn't a real washing machine, but he likes to pretend it is.

Axew just lives a fun life battling and playing and living in her hair. He is a happy Axew, but sometimes he worries that once he is bigger, he won't be able to be in her hair anymore. Once he told this to her and she gave him an apple because she didn't understand him. He appreciated the apple but it didn't solve his problem. Axew once tried reading a book about evolving, but he couldn't read, so it didn't work.

One day, Axew started to evolve, and he started crying because he wouldn't be able to play with his hair washing machine anymore. But Pikachu heard him and gave him a bunch of rocks and told him to swallow them. He did, and it was hard, but he didn't evolve after that. He was really happy to stay an Axew.

The thing is when new games come out and a new series start, the ratings always have a huge jump over the ending of a previous series. It's happened when AG, DP and even BW came out.

However this time it hasn't. Outside of the 4.4 for the first two SM episodes...all the rest of the ratings have declined rapidly and are no better than the end of XY. The games being some of the best selling pokemon games since RBY obviously didn't correlate over to anime viewers.

People were actively protesting the ending of those episodes. The levels are back to the levels of people actively going out of their way to spite TV Tokyo after Ash got the shaft.

I'm focused on ratings dropping because as it stands, the anime is garbage. There is no redeeming aspect of it whatsoever. I want to see the anime get better and improve to be something that isn't so shit. It's not funny, it's not interesting, it's not exciting, it feels more like a chore to follow up with it. Ash has two pokemon. Rotomdex is annoying like in the games. The characters are vapid outside of their focus episodes. The only thing I have thus enjoyed about SM is the new ways that the Bewear gag is used every week. That's it.
