Well that was an interesting episode, I was worried Alolan Vulpix was only going to like Lillie and ignore the rest of the Pokemon. That would have been the worst thing they could have done with the development, but it seems like it warmed up to the rest of the group, not sure why but I'll assume Lillie told it to be nicer off-screen? But Mimikyu having no interest in battling any Pokemon other than Pikachu? What going to happen when it eventually loses to it? Will we get a backstory on it and have it warm up to Jessie because so far Mimikyu is the only Pokemon Jessie has had that doesn't seem remotely close to her.

Gag humor is fine. The problem is a lot of it is really poorly timed and unneeded. Lillie's emotional outpouring at the start of the episode was actually pretty nice, then they threw in that broken record effect where the music slows down and the pitch falls off a cliff, which effectively turned Lillie's heartfelt feelings into a joke, in more ways than one.

Great episode. Lillie was extremely cute, and had some good development. The two vulpix were adorable too, though I wish Ash had caught the Kanto one. Funny how Lillie can't touch Pokemon except Shiron while Shiron don't want to be touched by humans other than Lillie. Tsundere Jessie was nice too.

By the way, do you think Lillie will do battles ? She seems naturally talented at it, she knows a lot about Pokemon, Shiron is rather strong for a newborn, and it would be a good way to help her get over her fear of touching pokemon. Besides it would be nice if she actually fights when the main plot starts instead of being a damsel in distress.

Even though this episode was your generic "girl gets her first Pokemon and then has to deal with TR or some COTD villain" episode. Only difference here was that the writers threw in Lillie's "I can't touch my own Pokemon because muh autism" for some cheap drama.

Reminds me of Serena's Pokevision episode, where I was supposed to feel emotionally touched by Serena's Fennekin getting itself dirty to save Serena from a TR attack. That episode was Serena's worst episode of the XY/XYZ series, hands down. Luckily, she had two compelling character hooks right out of the gate, which helped soften the negatives of her otherwise lousy first nine or ten months in XY.

One concern I have is that both times where she's gotten over the fear of touching one specific Pokemon/egg, it's involved the exact same premise: the egg/mon is under attack, so I'll leap on it out of instinct to save it and then realize 30 seconds later that I'm touching it.

I'm watching it because I'm curious to see how it goes. Yes, the main cast is too crowded, they lack complex personalities, and they don't fill clear-cut roles within the school, and their broader purpose in the show outside "classmates" is still largely undefined.

Yes, the art style and animation are inconsistent at best, with lots of recycled footage and speed lines being deployed and with really wonky looking character designs in some cases.

Yes, the relative paucity of Pokemon battles has been troubling.

And yes, the execution of the season's style of humor has been inconsistent at best. Sometimes it's done very well, as in the case of Mimikyu's bizarre/freaky personality and Mareanie's lewding of James. Other times it comes off as overly forced, repetitive, or poorly timed, as in the case of Lillie's key emotional scenes.

But even with those significant critiques, there is a long way to go, and with time we may be pleasantly surprised, particularly when it comes to Kkawe and Lillie as well as Team Rocket, Top Kek, Lusamine/Aether and the Z-Rings.

One major flaw in your argument regarding Amour: it wasn't introduced as a running gag. It was introduced as a plot/character arc influencer straight away. The writers speckled the subplot with cute stuff, emotional development, some plot impact, humor, and so on. Lillie's fear was introduced as a running gag, and that treatment dominates until suddenly we are told in SM08 that there may be a more serious backstory to it.

To be sure there were some running gag-type aspects (Serena spilling spaghetti a lot, but they very frequently changed up the manner in which it happened). The gag-like elements were rarely if ever found within mere seconds of Serena having some major emotional stress or epiphany or whatever though. The timing and sequence were at least decently executed.

I understand the writers are trying to tell us that Lillie still has fear of touching other Pokemon, and I totally see the humor in it. I just wish they could time it and sculpt it better, not get rid of the humor altogether.

I think it actually could work in the right circumstances, the question is can the writers successfully pivot away from or reduce the focus on the running-gag aspects of the phobia when the time is right? Over simplifying their goals isn't going to move this argument any better. Lana wants to explore the deep sea in a huge bubble made by Popplio. With anime physics this is possible, she wants to learn more about water Pokemon and its probably been her dream to do so since while fishing you can't see what goes on below the water.

Lillie has a fear of touching Pokemon, where does it come from? Who knows it could be UB related, it could be by Lusamine herself, or maybe something between her and Gladion. There's so much that needs to be uncovered about this that her being able to touch Pokemon again is a nice goal.
