To be fair in XY, other than Ash's capture episodes/gym battles, during the first two years it was pretty much rotating between boring Serena/Clemont/Bonnie fillers.Absolutely nothing interesting happened.

For comparison, DP at least had J/Paul to keep things interesting between the gyms in the first year or two but XY... absolutely nothing.

XY started hype, which made the filler stretch that followed much easier to get through because we knew so much interesting shit lay ahead. Right now SM is both starting out a bit slower and not really offering much in the way of a road map of interesting shit.

The fight was not bad. I had hoped, that Ash would lose to Hala and then win against him later. Bauz should have also lost, Krabbox should actually be the stronger of both, since he must have more experience actually. Bauz was to strong made in this episode or Krabbox too weak, was sadly stupid. Pikachu would then have been able to defeat Krabbox, lose to Hariyama. This would have made Ash more responsive to a retaliation against Hala. Hala was unfortunately presented here too weak, I would have expected more. But really good was not the fight, it was the best fight in SM but not really exciting or interesting. Nice to see how Bauz is taking a nap right after the fight against Krabbox.

I finished XY and let me tell you that it was good

BUT I have two issues

The first one is obviously Ash losing to Alain

The second one is Serena's goal. I thought Tripokalons were pretty cute, but after the episode where Serena dresses up as Ash, it would've been perfect for her to collect badges. While not strong, she's shown to be pretty clever and competent.

I know why they did it though, but making her a coordinator felt lazy. I knew she wasn't going with Yashio.

It doesn't really matter though, XY was pretty good regardless.

SM is...fun. It's not XY but it's fun. Fuck Sophocles though.
