I just hatched about 2 boxes of turtonator eggs and I lightly tossed my 3ds onto the couch and the game card somehow popped out. Yup, caught using the SOS method. But when the shiny finally popped out, I was nervous as hell because my Smeargle was tired everywhere, ditto kept successfully calling for help, his transformed form was NOT shiny, and only 3pp per moves make a struggling ditto a possibility. Also, first ball I used was a timer ball and it failed critically. Had to spend another 5 scary minutes to finally catch the sonovabitch.

That sounds tense. When I was chaining for my dittos, I used a munchlax that only knew recycle, let the ditto transform into that, swapped into an alolan persian that knew switcheroo to give the ditto a leppa berry, that way you never have to faint the original ditto and you can chain literally until you run out of PP yourself. Which could be never if you also run recycle + leppa berry on a different snorlax etc to swipe with!

X = 1 - (1 - P)^N

P is 1/512 when masudaing with a charm, N in >>30856445's case is 210.

X = 1 - (1 - 1/512)^210
X = 0.33532~

Meaning 210 eggs with masuda + charm has a roughly 33% chance of containing one shiny.

For anyone interested, X = 0.5~ or 50% at around 357 tries. So if there's a point where you can start saying RNG is fucking you, it's after you hit 12 boxes, or 360 hatches.

Get something that isn't overly common, Relicanth and Alomomola seem to be good, fossil mons were decent, or farm Razor Claws to trade Weaviles(Best option imo) to fill out your dex.

Like sure, I'm sure rare pokemon get snapped up pretty quick, it sounds great for version exclusives, but I have a hard time believing that catching/breeding a rare pokemon and going back and forth through the festival plaza and disconnecting and reconnecting to the internet and waiting at least a couple minutes for the pokemon to be traded is faster than just going to the place and catching it yourself.

Especially if you're farming for Weaviles like that one anon which is already a 5% chance on Jang and Hakka, 50% on Kommo but Kommo is already a rare call. Maybe for pokemon you have to evolve?

You can't even put more than one up at a time. Sounds like something lazy people tricked themselves into thinking was efficient.

Just finished my first MM hunt of the generation for shiny rockruff. Got one with shit speed at box 11, finally hatched another missing special defense at box 19. Good stuff.

BTW, that Oval Charm is super effective. I get more eggs than I can hatch even with a flame body 'mon. The hot springs are already filled to the brim. What if I overshot my shiny with dozens of more eggs?

This is my first MM in this game and I'm still getting used to the Rodeo Cage of Autism as opposed to Battle Resort's perfect loop that only required mindlessly holding up on the D-Pad (RIP), but I think it's going well so far. Being able to check IVs from the PC is a godsend.

I literally hatched this on the first egg upon switching to my Chinese Ditto. Alolan Meowth --> Primarina to get Fake Out & Encore on there, a decent chance I'll probably never use them on a competitive set, but I still thought it was worth breeding them on just in case. The parent Pikachu didn't have any flawless stats, hence only 2 31 IVs were passed down; definitely gonna Bottle Cap this baby down the track.

I want a Bold Koffing with will-o-wisp, the mother is a Bold Koffing and the father a Shuppet.

I am honestly starting to think that the swap breeding method is better than typical MM (shiny female Salandit anon here, finally EV trained the little lady, now levelling her up). MM typically takes anywhere from 5 - 40+ boxes, right? Yet from what I've read in the investigation thread (intro this new RNG) and in shiny threads that have popped up over the week, is that the shiny Magikarp usually pops up in the first or second box. Even if the person is resetting, the shiny comes a lot quicker than a typical MM hunt.

Or maybe shiny Magikarp is unusually common? Just something I've noticed.

What does cloyster have to do with anything? You can put a synchronize mon in front of the party and it'll always be 50% chance.

If you reset after the 5th box you're just going to get the exact same 5 boxes because the eggs are predetermined.

And if you got the shiny Magikarp on box 16, no, you don't have to hatch all 16 boxes again. If you saved after box 15, you can reset, switch, and only re-do the last box.

I breed Pokemon to get good IVs to battle, you've got it mixed up. Don't get me wrong, Bottle Caps are brilliant for shinies and legendaries, but for normal breeding, I'd rather just breed for the pentaperfect anyway.

I'd 100% agree with you IF they didn't put in the asinine level 100 requirement. I haven't gotten any Pokemon to level 100 yet, it takes far too long.

nono you mixed that up. If you have 40 eggs in a box, thereis no way to change the attributes of those eggs (shiny, IV, moves, nature). The parents generate eggs by a random algo, but when u pick up said egg, the numbers are then determined and unchangeable unless u had pkhex

There are some ways to reset it, but no guarantee you can *completely* reset them, your have to take extra measures after every reset to change the egg generation and it's possible you'll just loop back to where you were anyway. It's easier to just not reset and continue on the path you're on.

So guys, tell me exactly why I would use S/M for shiny hunting? After an SOS chain of 70 you get a pathetic odd of 1/600, which is the odd of friend safari in X/Y and doesn't come close to 1/200 of fish chaining (rader is broken AF)
I only feel S/M has better masuda as Tauros seems faster.
So any reason to use S/M for shiny hunting?

Only use S/M for gen 7 Pokemon? Most of my shiny bros are still in Bank. Plus you'll get to collect more Ribbons in X/Y/ORAS. MMing is slightly easier, especially in ORAS with the Battle Resort bike track.

SOS hunting doesn't have the most stellar odds of all available options, but you blow through pokemon much faster. It shares the same issues as friend safari and chaining, which is that you can't guarantee nature or IVs. Masuda is just a better way to get shinies because you can at least skew the odds toward getting what you want, so SM having better Masuda would be the reason.

It's hell just finding a calm synchronizer, let alone a shiny Eevee. Not to mention I suck at chaining. I know it's not as bad as MM, but it still sucks. The shiny hunting is the only thing I miss about Gen 6.
