TOTT: It's certainly more concise, and that's got its merits, but I feel like parts of it might benefit from a few more words here and there to make it a bit clearer.

For example, I found "Lurkers" and "House Catalog" to be slightly confusing at first--when I first saw House Catalog I thought it was a catalog of houses for some reason. So in my opinion, it might be good to add a few more words explaining more about them. Instead of "House Catalog" maybe specify that it's the catalog of our fics. And instead of "Lurkers: IRC" maybe just have it say "IRC", though you could probably add in "Lurkers welcome" or something like that somewhere.

And I think the FAQ section could be written out a bit more, like so:

As I said before, the main cause for the delay is me feeling unsure about the chapter's quality, and so I've been spending a lot of time rereading it and trying to make it better, with mixed results. Mostly I felt like the pacing was a bit off, like nothing important happens for too much of the chapter. But I've made some changes since I first started thinking that, so perhaps that problem got remedied by this point. I hope so, at least.

While I do agree with media being an important part of a storyteller's background, there's a certain limit and typically a guideline for how and what should be consumed. I'm basically just a lazy cunt that likes to make words happen, so "actual accomplished published writer" isn't very likely. Despite the golden nuggets of advice on storytelling I've pulled from vidya and the more platinum people that played them, it's second hand to pursuing straight academia.

Regardless, I appreciate the proofreading in general. Every little correction helps make the only problem my flawed portrayal of my plot and characters.

I remember one anon in the last (?) thread saying that his writing philosophy was that something exciting should happen every 1000 words because you need to keep the reader's interest. This was a pretty good chapter sure it did not really advance the plot too much but it did give us information about the previous life of this combee and the "culture" of the combee on this island. I really like the adition you made about the amber castles I dont know if its canon or not but it makes sense. I also really loved the interaction between the combee and weavile .

I got a couple ideas for you if you dont have anything planed for this yet: The sample the character needs to take could be on the combee when its healthy, kind of like a trust thing, even if it hurts a little she will trust him if it dosent injure her badly, and for him keeping her or not it could be a choice in the end, he could ask her if she wants to come with him or stay.

Regarding Amber Castles:
They are actually canon... in the sense that a single one appeared in the anime for a single episode, "An Angry Combeenation", and was never mentioned again. It was also implied to be unique instead of one of many. But I'm taking the creative liberty to expand on the concept, because I liked the idea.

Regarding the bartender:
The first chapter does indeed specify that he has golden teeth I just forgot about it, oops so like you said, I don't need the indefinite article. Thanks for pointing it out, I'll change it.

And with "How much you done so far", that was just me trying to make him sound sort of laid-back and stuff, even though it is improper grammar. I figured it was acceptable considering it's in dialogue instead of narration, but I'll check it over again and think about if it needs to be redone.

And regarding your idea:
I don't have too much of the plot planned out past the next chapter, because I'm planning for something to happen at the end of that chapter which, depending on whether or not I keep it, would affect the rest of the story. But I've been planning ahead along one of those potential story branches, and your suggestion about the whole trust test thing would fit in. I'll mull over it and see if I can add it in, because I like the sound of it.

Super, which is the 4th game and the one which would effectively glue all of the game's locations together in the matter of several continents (some of which not even having had games take place on them), introduced Emeras as a concept to appear in Mystery Dungeons. The mechanic is just RNG power-ups you fit into your emera brace (replaces scarves, so has their passive effects in addition to having a certain number of slots for emeras to be fit). Mega-Evolution is determined by fitting an Awakening emera into a pokemon who has the ability to go Mega, making their basic attack hit for 10x and I believe smash walls, as well as have the stat boost associated with the Mega. At the end of the duration, a pokemon who is mega-evolved will go berserk and fuck everyone for a few turns before turning back to normal. If the pokemon cannot mega, then they simply get that duration in which they cannot be attacked from the front (with the implication that they got gud at dodge). No berserk at the end, just dodging from where your character is facing.

The amnesia seems to be a result of the transformation, though it's usually not explained with the exception of one game. The main character forgets everything except that they were supposed to be a human and their name. None of the games have ever had the MC really recover their memory.

In fan writing, one of the first goals of the character is usually to find a psychic to help them with their memory. Typically it ends up being to no avail or having mixed results, but it's a decent way to get the protagonists moving to a town and possibly help the partner believe the MC isn't crazy. It's probably cliche at this point.

Technology is pretty limited in the games. Off the top of my head, the most advanced thing that's not apparently magical in some way is a large telescope.

Hey, a topic I actually know about! But there's not too much I can add that Mimiga and that anon didn't already say. I'll just add some things to the technology subject.

The level of technology seems pretty random. It's mostly low-tech; for example, houses are made of wood and stone a lot of the time, and the town in Explorers even has teepees. We've yet to see a truly big city, though large and lively towns like Lively Town do exist.

Then there are some things that can really only be explained by magic, like badges that let you warp yourself or others out of dungeons, and "scarves" (often depicted as bandannas or bowties) that somehow impart things like increased defense or the ability to walk through walls. (Note: as Mimiga and anon said, these were replaced by gemstones called Emeras you can install into bracelets called Looplets in Super Mystery Dungeon, but they do the same thing).

But then you've also got things like the glowing blue orb in the back of this image here. That's the Nexus from Super Mystery Dungeon, which is like a holographic map of the world that also lets you teleport to any mystery dungeon, but you need to complete some requirement to do so (I think it's visiting every dungeon in the game, but I'm not sure). Maybe it's magic too, but it sure seems more like advanced technology than anything. In a similar vein, you've also got the Decrepit Lab from Rescue Team which is clearly hi-tech and pretty out of place, but it shows that hi-tech stuff is possible in this universe. Or at least, it was at one point, in at least one location.

This is one of the very few times humans are mentioned. I believe the third game asserts that they're "fairy tales", so a post-human world is a plausible theory for the pmd games.

It's a popular opinion that Gates is the worst and Explorers is the best. Even so, Gates gets praise for its characters and some other new features it added like "Mysteriosity", and it's by no means official that Gates is the worst in the series. Of course, the question then becomes what that "magic" is that could both destroy (or at least mostly destroy) humanity and also have the side effect of ripping spacetime a new one and making dungeons as a result. Gates is considered the worst for a variety of reasons:

There are only 144(?) pokemon species in the game, less than any of the previous titles, though it was likely due to time/budget constraints in the transition to 3d models. This in turn limited your character options to 5 different pokemon. You can really feel the lack of variety as you fight the same enemies repeatedly in each dungeon.

When the main story is over, the game pretty much stops. You can keep going and doing things, but it's mostly pointless at that point. In all three of the other games, there's a significant amount of post game content that has a lot of replay value.

They also tried to put meaningless DLC into the game. They probably earned more angry emails than they did dollars.

The story was actually good. The main cast were all developed and interesting, and it's the first game where you could run dungeons with other story characters as opposed to random recruits. It made significant improvements to the combat system and its soundtrack may be the best in the series. Unfortunately none of these completely make up for the shortcomings or justify the price tag.

Making the main character something other than a first-stage Pokemon would certainly be different from all the games, but in my opinion, it's not exactly taboo. That said, breaking from the formula might come off as a bit of an odd and perhaps even unnecessary choice for some people, so be careful.

Final stage Pokemon aren't seen as any different from unevolved or middle stage Pokemon, as far as I know. In fact, it seems in some cases that one's evolutionary stage isn't even an indicator of age. For example, the Expedition Society in Super Mystery Dungeon has Archen and Buizel who both appear to be quite mature despite being unevolved.

Evolution has a vague, unstated association with age. Typically shopkeepers, parents, or other older pokemon will be evolved. The strongest, most experienced, and well respected teams have always been fully evolved.

I was already planning this for a second to third stage evo. I already know what's going to trigger it in both cases, too. Besides, Dartrix is well-enough suited for the awkward adjustment phase, and whether by lore or meme has become the embodiment of an awkward adjustment phase itself. May as well take advantage of that.

Starting the MC in first-stage and the partner in second-stage seems to me like it'd break a nice symmetry between them. I think I can fix two different development points for the MC that an evolution would well-represent, but the partner not so much. I'll have to keep banging my head against this wall I guess. Continuity seems to come naturally to me; not flawlessly but I'm more apt to write typos than continuity errors.
Eternally Vernal, the whole thing was a mistake in judgment. I thought that it would give meaning to a meaningless character, but all it did was alienate all one of my readers.
The scrapped draft, I was writing to accomplish a goal, not because I actually felt a proper story there that wanted me to write it.

This would be my plan. I'd warm the reader up to the notion it's still in-play (since like you said if I don't start on that note it's not apparent as a central focus) with a couple mentions how they still find some things weird, still think their body is fucky in some ways, the partner's keeping tabs on how they're holding up, etc etc. It'd slowly get phased to the fore as I'd gear up the character moments that set up the evolution trigger, likely during a lull in the 'main' plot.

Placed in the first chapter auxiliary to some other event (First dungeon clear?), the biggest help would be that it sets the foundation for the main difference in the ex-human's approach to dungeoneering compared to the partner's.

In terms of mechanics, final evolutions in PMD are similar to their first stage counterparts, with a few caveats. If I remember correctly, evolving gives your pokemon a flat +10 bonus across all stats, which really isn't that much at higher levels (especially considering PMD has unlimited stat boosters). However this ONLY applies if your Pokemon actually evolves in the game- Pokemon who join your team preevolved never get this boost. You will see this in Gates to Infinity when you try comparing the storyline Hydreigon to one you recruit as a Deino and later evolve and the difference in stats is immediately obvious.

I tend to interpret this as Pokemon which plow through their evolutionary cycle as fast as possible as missing out on most of the benefits of their growth. No matter how quickly a Pokemon trains, waiting at least 6 months between evolutions would be considered mandatory in my headcanon to get the maximum benefit from the process.

This is not really what you're asking, is it, though? I don't really understand what you mean by "a special place in PMD"- are you asking if evolved Pokemon are naturally given some sort of higher level of respect in PMD societies and thus it might make a poor choice to immediately start the MC out as one? If that's the case I'd say no. Highly respected figures like Lucario and Team ACT tend to be evolved simply because of how long they've been active, but its their strength and experience that makes them influential. That being said, some non-fully-evolved Pokemon such as Grovyle and Munna have been major players in the series.

In terms of plot, I think evolution can serve as a useful storyline climax, usually culminating with the MC's personal/physical growth and allowing them to overcome a previously unmanageable challenge. Starting an MC out as their most powerful form robs you of this opportunity and can make your story seem like it has a weak interpretation of the lore if they're a shitty fighter to boot.
