The XY anime overall was pretty good, but the ending just shows that the anime refuses to grow or do anything with Ash's character that will ever grow him up or advance him towards his goal. He trained hard, and got a super special Pokemon but STILL couldn't win the league. He got a girl who was in love with him, and became the heaviest pushed ship in the anime up until this point. But it's probably going to be dropped without being addressed much. Why can't Ash ever grow? The series would not change that much. The executives behind the series have a cancerous mindset, especially with the league.

What annoys me the most is that Ash could've and should've won. There was no reason writing-wise for him to lose, he was never shown to have made any mistakes in training or during battle and when he did with Ash Greninja, there was a whole arc about overcoming them.

I haven't seen Kanto in so long that I can't really say if more focus was put on the gym battles or not. I can definitely say that for Hoenn and onwards, though. Johto was so bogged down with filler that the gyms might as well have been the only thing that was really happening. Orange was small and all about doing crazy junk, so it made no difference. From what I remember, Kanto was also equal parts random junk for both gyms and regular eps, at least until the filler city between Fuschia and Cinnabar. That may have been coincidence, though, since Cinnabar was made out as an event compared to the eps that came before it.

pokemon HAS an anime, pokemon HAS a trading card game, but for all intents and purposes- pokemon IS a video game series.
The anime and the games do not follow the same exact canon/continuity. When people say that the anime is not canon, they mean that it is not canon TO THE GAMES, not that it isn't canon "PERIOD" as a lot of people have ignorantly thought. although, because the anime is only an offshoot of the games, that's not entirely inaccurate either.
The games are the "real" continuity people are talking about, but each piece of media still has their own separate canon. to constantly argue that the anime IS canon (to the games) is to not understand the concept of continuity or canon.
It is not a personal opinion being shared with you to be told that the anime and games follow separate continuities. This Is Fact.

Why does Kanto feel so weird compared to future seasons? Ignoring the awkward differences, it feels like the anime became more... formulatic? You just know what's gonna happen and there's little actual drama. I wonder how much of it is due to Ash's personality change. He evolved as a character but losing his spunk made him pretty mundane. He's just a cute, nice kid now. He's pretty similar to the generic shonen protagonist archetype, if not is an actual example.

Have flashbacks ever shown Ash as the stubborn arse he was in Kanto and Johto? Every childhood flashback has him in his current, nice persona. So we're supposed to believe he was a nice, happy kid -> between age 8 and 9 he became a brat -> he matured and returned back to his original personality.
