How to progress in PTCGO, tl;dr edition:
>complete all Trainer Challenges for loadsa packs to kickstart your collection
>play through using basic decks to unlock them for versus play
>grind prizes/coins on Versus Mode theme ladder
>enter theme format tournaments whenever possible using coins
>using your winnings from the last two steps, enter ticket tournaments. You'll get tradable shit from those
>trade packs/chests for the cards in a deck you actually want to build
>don't open packs before you have a solid deck, YOU EARNED THOSE, DON'T WASTE THEM ON SOME SHITTY HOLO RARE AND 9X KRABBY
>public trade is like the GTS, if you want proper results, put up your own offers
>occasionally the thread isn't entirely anti-social and can get you deals on cards

To see what your PTCGO stuff is worth right now, look for the PTCGO forums in the trading section.
>Your old IRL cards are probably fake or not worth caring about. Check TrollandToad, eBay, and TCGplayer instead of asking.

No

I won't be going, digitally player only.

when it comes to trading packs, what would be fair trades? do people trade cards for packs? I could really go for some ghost pokemon.
>>

why not?

I've never been to a prerelease but it sounds fun and you know you'll never be the most awkward guy in the room so that's a bonus

Not him, but i just hate the new structure. I liked the older method and the fact that there was only one prerelease promo. And don't get me started on how they dole out packs after the three rounds are up.

People are compensating for that by running Talonflame BREAK.

I am going, I recently bought a bunch of cards physically and will probably have my scizor deck ready in a week.

Will also give me a chance to see the kind of people playing and see if anyone has shaymemes they wanna sell to me for a price lower than ebay prices. Usually there are people around in the scene with extras or know people with extras.
>>
>>29353873
Prereleases don't let you bring your own deck. You get a shitty premade box, then you draft from a handful of packs.
>>
>>29353953
I wasn't planning to use my own deck (cards are actually still shipping along with sleeves) , I was planning to just scope out my scene to see how much of a mistake I made with my deck.

Also just to talk to people and get a feel how the scene is like. TCG players seem chill.

only if you're a fucking casual. don't grade anything that won't pay off the grading fee for starters.

it's mostly used for preserving old cards in a safe and secure case. if you're not doing it for your personal collection, don't bother.

>>
>>29362351
one of the few where this is objectively true

why is sh.ex rated so much higher than octillery? I know you need two cards to get octillery, but you can just keep him on the bench and get the effect without the turn inbetween when you have to play someone else

plus.. this is ultra rare, and the other isn't, so it should be more commonly used, right?
>>
so I'm pretty new to the game, was sad to see no gengar ex in standard. saw news about a gengar ex box coming out soon, as well as a chest or something with mega gengar ex as the promo. apparently the gengar ex is a promo reprint of the phantom forces gengar ex. so does that make gengar ex accessible again for standard? if they're bringing these two cards out are we likely to see the spirit link for them?
>>
>>29362384
It's mostly about the instant effect. You can easily get a very good set up with Shaymin on turn 1. Octillery can be better if your deck doesn't set up quickly and you'd need some more turns. There's also deck space to consider.

>>29362434
Gengar-EX and spirit link remain expanded since the box includes the phantom forces print and not a new promo one. You can include the Shiny M-Gengar in your standard decks but will have no way to put it into play.
>>
Why do people not pay attention to how many cards they have left? Just won two games fairly close together because my opponent ran out of cards.

It also happened against a Typhlosion deck the other day, which is slightly more understandable. These two were just brainless 'play every card I have and draw loads of cards, even though I don't need to' mistakes. It felt like I was playing against the AI.

Obligatory 'you have a good deck' when their card count hits zero.

>>29362553
>You can include the Shiny M-Gengar in your standard deck

Not the same guy btw, but how can you do this? Bulbapedia says it only came out in Japan and I don't think it's available in PTCGO.

They're probably digging for something like a DCE and having bad luck.
>>
>>29362758
A lot of players get into a sort of "I can so I should" tunnel vision. This also happens when there are so many people in this current meta that just toss around N for no reason. Its tempting to dump your hand as fast as possible before your opponent can randomly N to put you both at the mercy of the awful shuffle system

Well to be honest, burn has been an irrelevant status effect for a pretty decent amount of time due to gamefreak barely using the effect.

Hell, pretty much any status but sleep or paralysis is barely used. Confusion is a pretty rare effect nowadays and even poison is used a ton more.

Poison is easily the most-used status effect by a very long shot.

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Depends on format.

Expanded it's by far the most used due to stadium effects and hypnotoxic.
Standard it's the most used if only because gamefreak seems to give lots of poison around.

It's honestly hard to numerate what's the most used but burn is definitely the least used because gamefreak doesn't give it out.

If we're going to reprint cards, why not bring back some of the older cards that haven't seen the light of day in over a decade?

With how old the game is and with how many good and unique cards we've had over the game's long history, it's pretty ass to keep getting the same handful of HGSS-on cards reprinted and recycled over and over and over and over again. We've been using Juniper, N, and Ultra Ball for over half a decade now.

Is there a /vp/ recommended site for selling cards, or should I just hit up a physical store? I'm in the Seattle area if anyone knows a good local one.

I went through my attic earlier to do some cleaning, and I found two full binders with 100+ pages of card sleeves (9 per page), both pages filled front and back. It's mostly cards from the first three or four sets ever released, all first editions and in unreasonably good condition. There's at least $400 of my childhood allowance up there.

Is there a reliable site that has prices on cards from back then? I'm gonna sell them and try to make a few bucks since I quit playing the TCG as a kid. I found a bunch of sites, but they're all ad-riddled and have varying prices on the same cards.

Regice and Carbink are needed for the game's balance. They're a way for players without a ton of cash to be able to build good decks. If they weren't there, every deck would be EXs.

That doesn't make a single bit of sense, though. The reason those cards are cheap is because they're fucking shit cards. There's no such thing as a dedicated budget option like you're implying.
>>
>>29382127
The reason they're cheap is because they're more common. Joltik was like 20 cents and it was amazing.
>>
>>29382187
Joltik was literally a common. Meanwhile, uncommons like VS Seeker sold for $12+ despite being in one of the most-bought sets of the format. Even now it's still pushing $5 despite a reprint.

Regice is a rare. Glaceon and Jolteon are EXs. If they weren't pure shit, they wouldn't be affordable.

This is really getting off-topic, though. The point here is that >>29381888 is a really, really dumb statement.
>>
>>29381954
Cards that nobody seriously runs more than one of in any deck. Add enough tech and eventually your deck just bricks to inconsistency.
>>
>>29382308
Regice and Carbink are still much less expensive than EX decks, though. They're in the game to offer a cheap counter to other decks. Think about it: If you were a kid, just starting out, and got destroyed by things like Jolteon, Shaymins, Rayquazas, etc. at the league, would you really want to keep playing if you couldn't get a counter on the cheap?
>>
>>29382410
The problem is, they're a "counter" without counterplay. If your only "budget" solution is to make the card entirely untouchable outside of single tech options, its a poorly designed solution.

>If you were a kid, just starting out, and got destroyed by things like Jolteon, Shaymins, Rayquazas, etc. at the league, would you really want to keep playing if you couldn't get a counter on the cheap?
And then you buy your Regice for $1 each and maybe you drop your allowance for a $15 Jolteon and then...you still lose against the same exact EX decks because that's now how this card game works. Just because they literally work against a specific card type does not mean they counter jack shit.

>>29382452
They have radically common counterplays, though. This is why they don't top tournaments on their own. No one showed up at Orlando with a lmaoCarbink deck and went on to top. The decks that did use Jolteon/Glaceon/Regice were packed full of non-budget options to actually make them work, and they absolutely would not have functioned without the expensive cards carrying them.

It doesn't help that these counterplays are being run regardless of the presence of Jolteon/Glaceon/Regice/Carbink. Garbodor goes in most topping decks. Every deck runs a pair of Lysandre. Ranger is already being teched as a 1-of to deal with Giratina. People ran Hex in Orlando to predict the Vileplume play. Decks like Scizor were already running Cobalion. The list goes on. When people are already running outs regardless of the presence of "counters", then these cards aren't counters.

This whole discussion is retarded and shows a really poor understanding of the game, the meta, and what it means for a card to be considered budget.

Everyone plays 4 VS Seeker. The only way you'd get shafted is if it's in your prizes. You also have Lysandre which most decks run 2 of. You should try playing Legacy where you can literally lock people with Suicune if they don't play certain tech cards.

If physical, don't buy boosters to start. Buy the actual cards for your deck and then once you have a deck buy boosters to trade with players.

If you're trying to get into it digitially then just buy the actual codes themselves off ebay.

This is something I was unsure about. I didn't start trading till well after SS came out and so I don't really know what to when we get the changeover.

My collection is pretty much all in Steam Siege. Do I hold onto them until the market figures out what Evolutions boosters are worth? Also, do you just convert to the new set by purchasing using Steam Siege and selling for Evolutions?

I'm fairly certain it will. Evolutions will be the pack given out for winning events and so will be the most prevalent. I'm just not sure if you should try and convert in one big go, or do it slowly by buying with SS and selling for Evolutions.

prices go haywire when a new set comes out and are all over the place for a week or so. Typically, the previous set quickly drops in value soon after. Although, with Evolutions not being great, the chances are good that SS will stay decently worth.

Still, the safest bet is to get out of packs altogether. Invest in some high-value cards that will hold their value (e.g. FA Lysandre/Shaymin/etc.) through the changeover and once Evolutions settles you can cash back down to packs at the new market rate.

Does this also work with high-value packs like RS, or do they go a bit nuts as well?

RS is a pretty sound investment yes, and the standard. As good as high value cards for holding value.

>Why does this happen?
idk, I'm not an economist, i just know from experience and seeing it the last few sets. As soon as SS came out, FC was shit. As soon as FC came out, BKP was shit.. I expect the why is simply because it's been out for a while. Everyone active in the game in general has gotten what they need from the old set for the most part - Four FA Sycamores, FA Volcanions, or whatever, so people don't particularly want to take in SS packs any more if they can avoid it. Plus there'll be some hot topic item in the next set people want, or just for collections sake. (I don't actually know if Evolutions has anything worth chasing, seems a shitty set). As a result, the newest thing is overvalued and the older ones dip for a while. It could come back up again later if people decide yes Volcanion-EX is ~all that~, but that's a gamble. RS holds it's value for ever because of Shaymeme.

The minting slows down, so you would expect it to inflate slower or even deflate long-term
But keep in mind that nobody will want to deal in SS after Evolutions is released. So the people with hundreds are going to be dumping it all and trying to convert it to Evolutions.
Also I suspect that the packs aren't truly backed by their contents, I calculated it and you get about 1.3 packs on average cracking RS and it's like .5 for SS. The effect is probably much larger for the current pack.

You should have got extra packs at the end. TPCI says that everyone should get at least 3 extra at the end.

What does /ptcgg/ think of other TCGs?
>>
>>29396174
Pokemon's easily one of the worst TCGs only carried by its surprisingly competent client, cute card art, and brand nostalgia. If any other card game could get their shit together and put up a better presentation and marketing scheme than Pokemon, it would be done for.

I personally think YGO is the best TCG thanks to its speed, depth, and level of player interaction, but I know that's not a popular opinion. I also think Duel Masters is a better version of Magic, but that's probably even more controversial despite the international appeal.
>>
>>29396211
Having actually played all four of these cards games, I wholeheartedly disagree. Magic is definitely the most indepth and interesting of the TCGs and it's only really held back by it's stigma of complexity and it being a rich man's game.

It doesn't have a good online client like TCG outside of seasonal formats which you still need to buy so there's no casual way to get in outside of buying cards for a season, which isn't appealing for new players since they hardly know what's good or not anyway.

That being said, I like PTCG quite a lot and it has a pretty fun community. I just recently joined a local community and plan to visit the local events more now that I have a physical deck. I kind of wish there were more grills that played the TCG though, maybe I'll find a few eventually. They'll all probably be taken though.

Kek
Too much cost for a card game that can resolve on T1.

OK thanks. Sounds like Steam Siege isn't guaranteed to crash, but investing in cards/RS helps to reduce risk.

Put up some trades for RS packs/Shay mins last night, but I've been in uni today so haven't had chance to check on them (posting from the train).

>>29390585

The Steam Siege flood is a good point. Maybe I should have tried to get out of Stram Siege a little earlier. Hopefully I can still get decent value for them as long as I can trade them before Evolutions turns up.

I'm not saying Magic is bad. I've been playing casually since Mirrodin and I genuinely love it.

I don't think things like price point and accessibility should be considered when judging a game mechanically. It's obviously important to consider for the reasons you state it, but it's not like either game is balanced around a paywall, which is what ultimately matters in my opinion.

I'm also not talking about a specific meta or format in either game. When I made that statement of YGO being better, I was more talking about the underlying mechanics. I can further explain if you genuinely want to have this discussion.

I've been a MTG player from 2003 to 2015 and I honestly like pokemon more. I haven't looked back since I got into pokemon standard last year. The only magic I play now is casual EDH with friends

I'm not him but I'm genuinely interested in why.

Maybe it should be discussed elsewhere? This is the Pokemon board, not a general TCG board.

Discussions here are disjointed enough without having people discussing other TCGs in the same thread.

It's an issue of the level of player interaction each system offers. My main gripe with Magic (and many other card games) is the underlying resource system found in Lands/Mana/Energy/etc. It limits what each player can do and halters the speed of the game.

Such a system obviously has advantages - it paces the game and allows multiple types of decks to flourish regardless of speed or age (in most cases) - but the cost of that pacing is limitation in options and plays. For example, if my opponent has two untapped Islands, I can expect a Counterspell (or maybe not!), but if he does not have those untapped Islands, then I am free to do what I want even if my opponent has the Counterspell in his hand, because he is hindered by the resource system and as a player I can use this information to my advantage. Obviously there are a lot of specific examples in the game's long history that don't have such limitations, but they go against the norm.

There's obviously a level of depth to this since it means both players need to manage their resources (such as intentionally leaving mana untapped to keep Counterspell live), but then YGO contrasts this by having every card live 100% of the time. Anything on the board, face-down, in the hand, or in the discard can potentially interact with any play at any time since they don't rely on a given resource outside of specific examples, making it more of a mental game as opposed to one of resources. This gives the player a lot more freedom in what he can do with what he has, instead of having to wrestle with himself and his own resources to get basic tasks done.

And this is without even getting into the problem of Land cards themselves, something that Duel Masters tackles perfectly without straying too far from MTG's original resource system.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying Magic is bad, or that a resource-based TCG is inherently worse. I just feel that the speed and fluidity a resource-less TCG offers is better.

I miss my Tyrantrum/Giratina deck. Would it be any good in expanded?

I'm trying to sell a shitload of foils from BW-late XY card sets, and looks like Troll and Toad has a good buylist and is going to buy 100 or so of my cards for a fair amount. Does anyone have experience selling to them?

I have things like that one expensive Shaymin and Trainer N, so they're offering me a lot for them but I've heard mixed reviews about their service. It doesn't seem like there's anywhere else I can sell all my cards though.

Does anyone here collect cards, or only play on PTCGO?
>>
>>29398315
I collect cards, recently began collecting about a week or two ago.

Bought all the cards I needed for a Keldeo and Scizor deck, dropped like 200 bux overall with most being on the shaymemes.

Will now begin buying packs so I can trade people with, will probably buy a box of an older set because Evolutions is garbo. Probably a box of steam siege.

I already need a new binder since my first binder is basically full.
>>
>>29398315
I play for the actual game. Collecting has never really appealed to me.

I been collecting for a while now, and I'm still can't bring myself to drop $100 for a Shaymin.

The most I ever paid for a card was $30 bucks, anymore then that I feel like a sucker.

But man, I almost drop $50 for a Mewtwo NexDex.
Why is that card so hard to get at a fair price?

>Put up some trades for RS packs/Shay mins last night, but I've been in uni today so haven't had chance to check on them

Just checked on my trades. Didn't manage to get any RS packs, but I got a Shaymin-EX for a really great price.
>>
>>29398638
I dropped like $120 or so for my two shaymemes, it's the cost of the format I guess.

It's good for a year so whatever and it'll stay in expanded which my area plays a lot of so it works out.

I payed like 40 bux for my two friggin jirachis ex, I feel like I'm wasting a lot but I'm not spending the cash anyway on shit so why not.

Anyone think the Evolutions or Japanese CP6 boxes will be worth to hang on to to sell later on after they're not being printed any more?

I have my Mew collection, my childhood Base-Neo collection, and my Generations collection but I also play competitively.

>>
>>29399451
How would you even make an arcanine even work?

All the current arcanines in standard suck a ridiculous amount of dick.
Maybe like Arcanine from evolutions with a Zoroark?

So like set up your growlith, evolve it twice and have two energies, attack with your break attack and now have two energies attached to your bench, use zoroark to bring your arcanine back, then move 2 energies back to your arcanine for its attack?

Holy shit that all sounds slow as fuck and clunky.

Is there a good arcanine hiding somewhere?

I played some MTG, YGO, Hearthstone and Android: Netrunner and honestly I'm surprised at how much I'm liking Pokemon after I started playing it online a few weeks ago. Pokemon manages to give players tons of tools to make their decks incredibly consistent without losing on turn 1 feeling normal. Playing in a A:NR tournament and making it to finals only to lose them due to incredibly bad draw really burned me on that game but I liked the econ aspect of it.

>If any other card game could get their shit together and put up a better presentation and marketing scheme than Pokemon, it would be done for.

And I'm still waiting for that to happen after 10+ years for the "next big thing" to de-throne Pokemon and Yugioh

>Duel Masters
>International appeal

Unless I'm reading you wrong, isn't Duel Masters basically dead outside of Asia? Yes, I remembered WotC's second attempt with Kaijudo

>>29398638

Well, it is a 4 year old card that is also hard to come by. Back when EXs were re-introduced the pull ratios for EXs and Full Arts were not as generous as it is today as well
