My device have no GPS, the only location system is WIFI, and it gets pretty crazy in open spaces. I think if there is no wifi source nearby it tries to locate you only with the far away ones and it is pretty bat at that. With some knowledge of sweet spots you can go to a different place by walking a few meters. I use it to hatch eggs and check some spawn points in my university in the middle of nowhere. I literally can access spawn points 100 meters away depending on the portion of the building I stay.

I think it determines my position by the strength of the wifi signal coming from my building and comparing with the signal from a far away building.
1. it is not very accurate at large distances working in tiers instead of linearly
2. the far away building signal is pretty low in an even way anywhere in my building.
3. By staying in certain specific spots in my building I can go to specific places in the other building.

It is not 100% accurate but being on the right place is not very accurate for me either, sometimes the only way for me to access a certain stop/gym is to stay somewhere else since it gets crazy when I'm on the right spot but calmer when I'm on a specific wrong spot.

Some locations get me consistently wrong in the same spot so for my game I'm never really in my apartment, when I'm on my room I'm always in an specific spot 50 meters away across the street. If there were a gym there I could consistently attack it with greater consistency than when I stand in the exact location of some random gym. In fact some gyms are impossible to attack if I stay in the correct place.

From my house I have 3 spawnpoints in range, I know exactly at what time they spawn stuff and there is a certain minute where all three should be active. Not only two of them are not working anymore but also I'm seeing a lot less pokemon on sightings which could mean nothing or could mean that others are inactive as well.
