All that update did in practice was perma-lock a lot of gyms to level 10.
And casual players sure as hell ain't gonna sit for an hour (assuming no defenders come around) in one place, battling the same pokemon over and over just to take down a gym and earn the game's equivalent of 8 cents.

What bothers me more is that you can't hodl a gym for more than a few minutes. I live in one of the biggest German cities and people will kick you out almost instantly, even if you conquer the gym at 2 AM. The nicest thing would be that it asks you if you want to fight/defend it actively if you're attacked but no anywhere near the gym but they would have to chance the battle mode in that case. Right now it's just about the element of the pokemon, it doesn't even matter if it has 2k or 3k, it's always easy to kill it so you can as well just put a 10cp Pidgey in the gym.

In NA, Instinct was always the team full of little kids or players who planned to play for the long haul despite an obvious overwhelming majority playing Mystic or Valor. At least, that's how I see it.

Gyms update making prestige grinding much more accessible means these people who wouldn't bother grinding 1v1 all day but would totally do some +2000-+4000 training runs are going to come out of the woodwork.

I hear Instinct has always been strong in Japan because Japanese don't care about the red vs blue colour dichotomy that much and just liked being on Team Pikachu.

Nah, don't spend dust on them. If you want a good gym guy to stay on top, just focus on Arcanine, Exeggcutor and Vaporeon since they all raw evolve to 2200+ CP at lvl 27-30. Arcanine seems to go as high as the 2400s and Exeggcutor straight up goes to 2500 at lvl 30 with 80%+ IV. NO stardust needed, just luck and being lvl 30. However, even at lvl 25-29 you can easily make 2000+ ones with no stardust.

No, there is ZERO point in taking down gyms if they're dominated by a single enemy team.

Say there are 5 gyms, each with 8 Pokemon on, average CP is 2000. You need to fight at least 7 times per gym to clear it. That's 280 2000+ Pokemon you need to wade through per day. Assuming you need to revive 2 Pokemon per battle, and use 6 potions to heal each round, that's 70 revives and 210 potions. And for what, to lose all those gyms within an hour of taking them?

Complete waste of time and items.

This guy has been very handy for me, took down some spoofer's Dragonite's with ease and only needing two small potions to be ready to go again. Against 'Nites, I feel that Blizzard is highly overrated since the animation takes so long to execute and you might get caught taking another charge attack straight to the face. As long as you get Frost Breath, your ice mon will do what's required of it.
