Has there ever been a trainer in the anime that was, how should I put it, being really .. tryhard?

In the sense that he caught every new pokemon he came across, captured every legendary he could, trained them all as high as he could so that he had hundreds of strong pokemon to pick from, no matter what battle he was about to engage in?

I know the anime is different in that trainers mostly only catch a few pokemon and stick to them, some don't even fully evolve their team and all, but yeah.

I guess in a way it just upsets me that Ash never even tried to capture the many legendaries he's encountered.

It looks like the S/M anime will be another Ash-centric series. I think people have way too high expectations for the S/M girls. They're likely all just going to be supporting characters sharing screentime along with the two male characters and whoever else.

If you count them altogether there's 6 main characters this arc, the most we've ever had, and the writers always tend to neglect characters every saga.

Mallow is the Brock/Cilan/Clemont character. Something I'm really happy about because I've wanted an onee-san to pal around with Ash on his journey for quite a while now.

Lillie, going solely by what we know about the games, I'd say is the Serena, Dawn, May of Sun and Moon.

Lana is a toss up because we know that she's shy and that she's an action girl. Beyond that we can't be sure.

Lillie for sure will play an active role in the series because her development is going to start with being able to touch and befriend Pokemon properly. Then later on once the Villian arc begins I expect her to become much more involved.

Lana COULD be the regional girl, I just have difficulty seeing it unless she turns out to be a Clemont/Early Serena hybrid. She has two younger sisters so I could see her being more of a "When someone is endanger, her onee-chan instincts kick in to protect them". Like a Oshimizu Nako type character from Hanasaku Iroha. And her development is about getting over her shyness.

I've had a thought about that newest preview with Ash, Kawai and Lana running through the forest. Likely it's Team Rocket causing problems, but what if something happens to Lillie and she winds up getting chased into the forest by a Pokemon or something. Ash comes and saves the day with his Z-Move and protects her which allows Lillie to find a Pokemon, Ashs Pikachu, who she is able to touch for the first time. A lot of anime has a character being able to overcome a fear because they are mentally able to make a connection that if something saves them it's a good thing and that it's not dangerous.

It's likely Pikachu is going to be the first Pokemon she can touch considering how he usually has a key role when Ash meets a female companion, and then the Vulpix at a later date who becomes her first capture and partner.

Ash meets everyone in the classroom, the episode progresses then Team Rocket or a wild Pokemon shows up and Lillie gets frighted. By then Ash has the Z-Ring, understands how to use it, and will know his classmates.

The reason I say Pikachu should be the first is that Vulpix probably won't be added into the anime for quite a bit. Lillies key description is that she is afraid to touch Pokemon. Don't expect that to be overcome in the first 5-6 episodes. Maybe around episode 12+ we'll get something with her fear of Pokemon directly related but it's going to take her a while to overcome it.

Ash needs a connection to Lillie especially if the series winds up going the darker route later on. If Ash and Lillie have a connection through Pikachu, it'll set up future bonding activities for them. Besides, Pikachu is THE mascot for the series, having a character afraid to touch whats supposed to be the most beloved Pokemon isn't a wise idea long term.

Have Lillie be initially afraid of it, but then it rescues her and she see's it in a new light. This winds up with her being able to touch it, not grab it suddenly into a tight hug, but able to touch and maybe pet him. Start small and have her build off that, have Pikachu be her training early on so that she is ready for when the Vulpix arrives.

If it appears and she has no practice touching Pokemon, she'll just run away and won't even consider it. But with Pikachu, where she can see the good in Pokemon, it gives her room to grow and expand her thinking as to how Pokemon are.

But who knows, her touching thing could be related to the UB's, Squids, Aether. We can't be sure.

Anime characters don't have too many Pokemon because they are treated as real animals that need to be cared for, so a professional trainer requires some sort of economy behind them to provide for the Pokemon (in Ash's case, it's Professor Oak providing his lab, which is why he actually owns more Pokemon than "normal" for your average trainer).

As for the Legendaries, most of the time Ash meets them they are related to some world-threatening event and have a required guardian duty of some sort. Rarely do trainers outright use Legends, aside from Heatran, who are somehow pretty common, and select elite trainers like Brandon and Tobias.

Remember the preview of the next episode where you see Ash holding Serena's and Bonnie's hands, jumping off of a huge cliff?

Only Ash survived that fall. Barely. He was in a coma for months, then they sent him to alola to recover, hoping the gentle and warm climate there would help him.
After some weeks he woke up and he's been slowly regenerating ever since. Add another few months and he was "fit" enough again that Kukui, Oak's cousin who Ash is staying with, asked him if he wanted to join his class at school which begins soon. He agrees, but it's obvious the injury and coma took their toll on him and he's regressed a good few years, plus he's a bit wacky now. Forgot a lot of things, too.

Serena and Bonnie however did not survive, their wounds were fatal.

It's the most grim story twist we've had yet in the anime to be honest.

I just realized something; XY did absolutely nothing with the Girls-only Performers thing.

Wouldn't it have been interesting if a male CoD (crossdressed) or hell, Ash (his inevitable crossdressing of the arc which didn't even happen) would participate in a Showcase? And at the end they get disqualified or get more attention because how well they've performed or whatever.

Orrrrrrrrrr, Serena could've been Calem and the events that happened to Serena regarding this goal stay the same but Aria would've noticed Calem (or "Serena" as a performer) that he's a boy and when Jessie exposes her (something that would actually influence his character) and he'd be diqualified. But Aria steps up and allows him to continue and then the same shit happens. In the end, male performers are allowed too.
