Add this to the seemingly obvious Ash crossdressing episode that practically wrote itself that they didn't do and Serena both not going with Yashio and dropping performances altogether and they end up being a big waste. Not to mention some designs like Marril Girl and Munchlax Girl going to waste through lack of screentime.

Well social media didn't exist when the anime started, hell it didn't really kick start till 2005/2006 or so and that's when even most of AG was already over.

The anime has been airing over 20 years, but it just makes more logical sense to me that the earliest characters would be the most watched and more well known. Its been 14 years since Misty left yet she's still probably the most recognizable pokemon girl to casuals. May also wound up being the second most watched girl of the series simply because AG aired back in 2002.

I also still see the Japanese churning out new fanart for Dawn and May on an almost daily basis and their characters have been gone from the show for years.

If networks can't adapt to evolve to match the new, preferred way to watch? They're going to die off while the ones that do maintain a viewerbase.
