I feel like Serena's reason to leave Ash was changed by the writers at the last minute. They probably were originally planning for her to go train with the Old woman to be a performer....but somewhere along the line dropped that plotline and decided to have her check out Contests in Hoenn instead.

It would also explain why the Old woman didn't appear or wasn't referenced since her last appearance in the Master Class till now. The whole Contests in Hoenn came out of left field, and Serena choosing to stop traveling with Ash after how much she liked him feels like a big change.

Depending on the build-up. What XY&Z at its current state lacked was continuity. If there was another year of it, I'm sure the League will be fleshed out. But the key here is if they allow him to take his whole pool and have Ash read the opposition, and react with a team that counters said opponent. If the finals is Ash's absolute finest vs rival, then he wins.
