You'll only be triggering one autist who gets buthurt at not 100% on topic discussion at the most. Anyone else who isn't a fag will just scroll past shit they don't care about.
But then again, it's not like I'm contributing anyway, so do whatever you want.

>>
>>29024900
Right, true enough. It's not to pull away all discussion from here, of course, it wouldn't be a /pmdg/ project if it wasnt! It's only to make more detailed stuff easier to talk about, like when links go back and forth on resources and such. Nevermind the lack of captchas to say anything, though!

Anyway, there's a few interesting tools to look at.
Monogame
Love2D
Godot
SFML

is what I'd propose as what to look at in parallel to any discussion related to sprites (if anyone's got a link to the EoS ones!) Sounds and whatnot. While that's done, the idea of doing a few jobs on "that one dungeon" we'll be putting in should be good enough.

If anyone has any interesting ideas about dungeon generation, be my guest. This could add a lot of flavor if done correctly.

If someone knows what modifications EoS does to the regular mainline stuff we can use as a starting point, that'd be useful to start figuring out the gameplay stuff.

I'm not particularly familiar with any of those tools, and I'm not the one programing it, so it'd probably be up to whoever is doing the programing to decide which one is best or easiest to work with.

http://www.spriters-resource.com/
Has a bunch, if not all, of the 2d MD character sprites as well as a few animations, tilesets, and various other random shit.
They have side pages for audio too, but I don't know if they have anything from mystery dungeon.

For dungeon generation, I'd recommend something simple to start out with, like simple rogue style dungeons, just so you have an easy starting point to test out other shit and then start on more complex unique generation shit later.
For my gbc game, I just used a basic system where I had some room templates and a 3x3 grid was filled with randomly selected rooms from that list of templates, and then connected each room to one adjacent room with hallways.

And as for differences between MD and mainline, bulbapedo has a few pages on mystery dungeon game mechanics. I'm not sure how accurate they are though.

So, about the fangame.
Understanding the core game loop is going to help a lot to code this thing regardless of engine. That can come even before any sort of code or sprites or sounds or scripts have been worked on.
From what my understanding is, the core gameplay loop consists of:
>Preparing to head out
>Giving some context to the dungeon's goals if not just exploration
Then you go in.
After that:
>Move, attack, item?
>If move, check whether it's possible, then move, then make everyone else have their turn
>If attack, check the target, apply damage, status, etc.
>If item, apply item effect
Of course it's a lot more complicated than this.
Movement for instance gives the player their turn "simultaneously" to everyone else, and you may have more than one action per turn, if you've got any sort of speed improvement.
>>29025231
If you can help elaborate on the mechanics if only through transcription that actually could help a lot. Takes a load off the coding if you can recall scenarios someone hasn't considered.
>>29025242
Thanks anon.
>>
>>29025001
>what modifications EoS does to the regular mainline stuff
The OP's got some pretty comprehensive guides on damage calculation and moves for Sky. We could use those.
>>
>>29025231
Thanks
>>
>>29025343
Anyway, attacks have attributes that can be classified, right?
>Whether it damages
>Hit success rate
>Area of effect
>Secondary effects and their success rates
If I'm forgetting something that's important write it down.
I'm not counting priority since I'm assuming turns always go in an order that gives the player priority unless the opponent gets more than one turn per turn. Hmm, that's weird to write.
>>29025363
That would be useful.
>>
>>29025395
>typing
>physical or special
>attack power (although I guess that goes under whether or not it damages)
...And that's all I can think of so far.
>>
>>29025395
Cont.
Mons have several attributes, right?
>Atk, Def
>Sp Atk, Sp Def
>IQ (if we include something like this)
And... uh, speed I think? I have no idea
So the typical attack states go like this, I think.
Animation -> Apply damage + Numbers pop up -> Apply effects + effects animation pop up -> turn over.
Item states go like this.
Animation -> Apply effect + secondary animations
>>29025447
Ah, yes, typing, physical or special. Yes, I'm counting AP as 0 being "it doesn't damage" unless someone has a special case where it doesn't apply.
>>
>/pmdg/ gets a game out before Sage or Clover

>>29025395
Crystals move data, and mine, is listed with the attributes: animation_id, effect_id, move power, type, accuracy, base pp, and effect chance. 7 bytes total.
Since you won't be as limited in how much space something can take up, you could have the animation_id and effect_id's be direct addresses to a function that is run when the move is used, instead of a single byte id linked to an address table.

That's probably a good idea. Though to keep the state machine smooth I'll probably do this stuff through a queue, where these functions queue all actions taken this turn where when the player's turn arrives, they get queued first, then it is emptied.
I hadn't remembered the base PP. Good eye there.
Perhaps also those +n modifiers to moves that are done by Ginseng, as well.

That both hurt and made me laugh at the same time. Props.

Be back later. Let's see how many other people join before I keep dumping text over how to model the mechanics.

Meanwhile, you can speak of a logo and a cool name.
>>
>>29025343
I guess I'll try to see how ally characters move/act in PSMD. They seem simple enough and possibly useful.

"Wait there" is a pretty good one, since your teammates will always use an attack if they are able to, rather than waste a turn repositioning themselves in combat. For example, if a Pokemon with Blizzard is set to "Follow me" instead of "Wait there", it has a chance of moving with the leader or simply doing nothing rather than use the attack, but if they're set to "Wait there", they'll always use Blizzard whenever possible.

With "Follow me", the first teammate will always mimic the leader's movements whenever possible. If the leader moves from a position diagonally from the teammate to a position right in front of the teammate, the teammate will move to where the leader once stood instead of staying there like they would if their tactic was "Let's go together".

"Don't use moves" is essentially "Follow me", but it disables your teammates from using any move or regular attack.

"Go the other way" makes your teammates function like enemies, wandering around the floor randomly.

"Go after foes" is similar to "Let's go together" until an enemy gets into their view. Once that happens, the teammate will stalk the enemy and hit them with a non-ranged move, or if they're able to use ranged/room-wide moves, they'll do so immediately.

"Get away from here" is basically the terrified condition. They'll wander aimlessly and run from any enemies they see.
>>
>>29025634
>you can speak of a logo and a cool name.
Well, is there already some form of setting, plot or anything similar to help in order to come up with a name?
>>
>>29025634
>Though to keep the state machine smooth I'll probably do this stuff through a queue, where these functions queue all actions taken this turn where when the player's turn arrives, they get queued first, then it is emptied.
Why use a queue? a simple loop would be sufficent.
In mine I just do a basic loop through all the npcs on the floor and they pick an action to preform based on their ai and surroundings. if they are set to move, they wait to preform their move animation until the end of a turn cycle or before someone else uses a move or item.
Fucking around with a queue seems like it'd be needlessly complex to me, but you're the programmer so do whatever.
>>
>>29025811
I suggested the enemy team/Hoopa thing from the last thread, but it seems like nothing really came out of it. It's probably a good idea if we came up with a story now too, since it'd help form the dungeon(s).
>>
>>29025865
I want to finish the animation first, then once that's done trigger the application of damage and whatnot.
Well, it's just the first solution that came to mind, since a battle engine I did with a friend did it that way.
What I meant is:
* Active state at the time is not null?
Finish performing this, set to null when done
* Active state is null?
Pull from the queue.
* Queue is empty?
Player's turn. Accept input.
It's a generalization, I guess. It could be used for other stuff, like middle-of-the-dungeon dialog, for instance.

Also forgot to mention that allies will use up their turn in a way that benefits the player the most. If an enemy is a space away from the teammate, then they'll wait for the enemy to approach them before they attack.

>>29025883
I was thinking about a plot for a while, but I don't know if it'll be any good, and only had the first part planned out. Mostly just thought it should a bit similar to Super's, like with you and a childhood friend mon who wants to go adventuring. Another mon around the same age as the two of you find out that you've been doing all these things behind everyone's back around the fourth dungeon in, and he wants to be in on it. The three of you basically form a trio, helping out mons with some things like finding medicine for a sick mon, and as your two partners gain confidence, start doing other tasks like finding treasure. Eventually people from other places find out about your feats, and the three of you find yourselves amidst [bullshit conflict regarding Jirachi wishes or something]. The three mons have contrasting personalities, the leader being kindhearted, emotional, and a bit shy, but unlike past leaders, speaks more often. Partner 1 is outgoing, tries to get the leader to break out of his shell, and just wants to have fun with the three of them. She acts a bit harsh at times, like if the leader's being too soft. Partner 2 is distant from the others and prefers to find treasure and be famous. He warms up eventually.
>>
>>29026134
I think that could work. Maybe, to broaden it, it could be about multiple exploration teams trying to reach some fabled land full of treasure? There's a simple start and end, where anything can be put in between.
>>
>>29026234
That's fine. If you want more plot in there, you could have the herb as a sort of first act quest, like how the shiren GB games kid rescue is apparently only the first part, or a side mission like with snes shiren and the brother and pot crafter stuff.
If you want fancy storage and recruits, you could have various inns along the way where you can manage you're recruits and stored items.
>>
>>29026208
As nice as all that sounds, that's a very ambitious plot for a first-time project. I think the leader/partners' personalities are great though. It's probably best if we kept the scale of this game's story to be about the size of a special episode, so maybe cut out some of the fluff dungeons and the bullshit conflict.

>>29026417
This could work too.

...Maybe we could fuse these two ideas?
>>
>>29026208
And with the whole conflict part, I thought that once your team gets famous enough, they decide to go to a dungeon to meet Jirachi and make a wish. The two partners start to get into fights a bit more, since they both have completely different wishes. Once they get there, they get into another fight before the team decides on a wish, and the second partner blurts out a crazy wish without meaning it, causing all sorts of things to get screwed up, eventually destroying the whole world if you don't do anything about it. Most of the townspeople and even legendaries get pissed at you guys for doing something so reckless, but eventually you'd have to find non-hostile legendaries that'll help you get out of the whole mess.

Like Super, some recruits are plotline characters. Partner 1 has a few other friends back in town that also want to join the team, for example. This doesn't mean normal recruits don't exist. The three characters go through multiple different towns after leaving the first one, since there's all sorts of problems going on in different places, and they each have a small little plot going on, not unlike Dragon Quest.

The whole thing's not that great, I know.
>>
>>29026642
I suppose you're right about keeping it short. Mostly thought of the conflict (seen here >>29026650) as an afterthought anyway, since I just preferred the "comfy" atmosphere early PSMD had.

>>
>>29027766
To not blow the thing out of what we can actually do.
>>
>>29027766
I feel like if the wish conflict were to be implemented, it'd be a bit like Explorers in that sense. Most of Explorers followed small arcs that were loosely connected, with the main arc being something that went on in the background until the guild tried to capture Grovyle, where the plot becomes centered around saving the world. It would likely be the same here, with each mission/town having their own small plot until the leadup to Jirachi. The trio being a thing, along with other NPCs being less of a bore/walking catchprase might help add to a comfy environment in the game.
I still don't think everything I had in mind would get in, since this is a first time fangame.

Anyway, the spriters-resource link contains a very small selection of sprites. We probably should look into how to use the tools in here.

Tilesets would be really useful, actually...
>>
>>29030385
the T&D section has a few tilesets, and you can look at the rescue team sections to see if they have any tilesets listed. Rescue team and Explorers use the same sprites for the most part, so you should be able to get away with using assets from both just fine.

I was thinking of writing a pmd fic based on one of my favorite planes in Magic the Gathering, Zendikar, where Missingno is basically a legion of eldritch abominations from outer space, and all the pokemon on earth are thrown into a War of the Worlds

What is the Pokémon equivalent of mana weaving and how would the plot move?

I actually imagined a plot where you are a human and you got sucked into your partner's dream to be one of the Royal Guard of Solgaleo/Lunala (depending on which version). One of the jobs of the Royal Guards include Rescuing, Extraction, important mail delivery, escort, etc.

Then Political intrigues happened between Sol AND Luna and you're forced to see that not everything Sol/Luna does isn't so wonderful because they have different ideologies that not every pokemon agrees to do and there's actually someone manipulating the events which you didn't suspect till the end unless you actually take hint of the foreshadowing. Aside from the end of the plot being 'the world is getting rekt because eternal sunlight/darkness', I only thought this far with what I'm planning

PMD: Guardians of Shine/Shade

As meme-tier as Jigglypuff is here, it at least makes some sense because of Smash popularity and cuteness factor like with Pikachu and Skitty. Still blatantly obvious Poochanon made that since Pooch and Puff are some of the first ones on the list

How did PSMD partners met?

I was thinking that they started out "kinda-enemies" because you were technically 'trespassing' at the Ruler's place when you woke up, but instead of whatever harsh punishment you have, the king just placed you under order to become one of the royal guard with Partner as your teammate

I'm also trying to do something where your actual enemy is (You) from the alternate dimension where, instead, you were actually part of the Opposing kingdom before the world actually got rekt and he was sent back in time to redo everything

Not really. It's kind of major and you'll probably see the breadcrumb trail leading to that revelation but the game on the whole isn't ruined for you. You'll still be able to enjoy it basically in full.

Alright, added a 4th slot, added back Shinx, and added Munchlax so all the old starters (minus Vulpix) are back, and included Grass/Fire/Water so people know what mons will get used there.
Probably won't do anything with this until more people want certain Pokemon added or canned. Only adding Gens I-IV right now, until it's confirmed that Gen V/VI mons can be used.
>>
>>29033079
If you want to avoid being too similar to the previous partner his basic rundown besides the Mew thing is being a high energy chatterbox type that wants to join an Explorer's Guild and see the world.

On the negative side, his energetic personality means he can get too wrapped up in his own excitement and not think about others' feelings, and his goal-oriented mindset gives him a bad case of tunnel vision

If you can draw sprites, portraits and animations for all of them, you're welcome to do so.
>>
So a bit of a progress report.
The sprites are extremely cleverly optimized - they have been extracted and we're looking at what all the different xml files mean so that animations are as close as possible to the legit pmd games.

The resulting extracted data is huge (401 megs)
most of it coming from the xml files giving meaning to those images.
We're looking into modifying the export tool to give it on a more uh, compressed form we can use.
>>
If we were to do sprites for stuff that came after EoS, I think we should start with Mega Evolutions and Alola Forms.

With bosses all you have to do is incapacitate the main one first with a Vile and Stun Seed, kill off the others with strong moves, then team on the main one, using a Violent Seed beforehand if available.
With Darkrai you need some Reviver Seeds too though, since Cresselia a shit

Alola forms I can see working just fine, since they're just new Pokemon. I, for one, would love a working Alolan Vulpix. But how would megas even work in a 2D PMD game? It's probably a good idea to establish that before making sprites that end up unneeded or unused.

Of course, this is all theoretical.

Team Charm's not that terrible. Besides, if a pair of unevolved starters can beat up legendaries and reach Guildmaster Rank, then it's safe to say that they won't have too much trouble either.

Is it really necessary to have so many starters to choose from? Can't a simple set of starters+non-starters from each type minus ghost be enough?

>>29046646
You'd use megas the same way as Shaymin's Sky forme: get the required mega stone and use it in a dungeon (without the speed boost and item consumption). Boom, simple megas.
>>
>>29052735
>Is it really necessary to have so many starters to choose from?
Personally think it'd be good to have more options, solely because most people have different tastes for things. Someone might want a cutesy Ground type like Wooper, while another person might want a cooler looking one like Cubone instead. Much of PMD locks you with your starter duo, so it'd be nice for people to get a mon they like a lot.
If this is about making new portraits, it could be cut down. Feel like only having dialogue can convey emotions better than portraits sometimes and in the second half of RT you could even use a mon that doesn't have any portraits.
>>
>>29052735
>mega stones as items
You know, that'd actually be a cool idea. You could even set them as rewards for clearing dungeons or special missions.

>>29052822
Speaking of cooler choices, we're still looking for a good replacement for Ledyba, right? How about Scyther?
>>
>>29052822
Not at all. I just think having a lot of starters is kinda overkill, and makes other choices seem pointless to be there.
>>
>>29048089
Yeah, I noticed that too. That's partially where I got the idea for the system in the first place.
It looks fine, so I'll probably just leave it that way, since it allows for non rectangular rooms.

>>
>>29058874
I think it'd be easier for people to contribute if you explained what the things on the picture mean.
>>
>>29059181
Fair point.
A monster on a dungeon has information that we need to keep track of.
A sprite would know where to locate it on the screen.
The map grid would know the grid relevant's information, like location on the grid.
The battle component has all the required information to execute battles.
The animations component knows the animation related information and whether an animation is finished (for awaiting for them to finish and then giving the turn to the player - as well as displaying them on a separate system.)
Moves and stats should be self-explainatory - they're part of the battle component.
Please do ask for elaboration.

Probably because of the people who think all that matters is the plot. And maybe the "every game is the last one" meme.

So why are there three HP stats under MonsterStats? The other duplicate stats I get, since they're stage boost modifiers.
Wouldn't a Move need a second PP stat to keep track of how many times it's been used?
Where's the IQ stat? I see one for what group, but not one for what skills they can/should know.
>>
>>29059856
Good questions!
The Hp Stage Max is for temporary dungeon boosts (like oran berries in dungeons enhance HP temporarily, for that dungeon)
HP stage is for the current HP, i.e. the damage you can still take.
The other is, then, the HP you had when you entered the dungeon. It could be modified (permanently) in the dungeon through items so that's written back into the save file or the game's global state.
Yes, good observation. I'm adding that missing current PP.
The IQ stat is missing too, another good observation.
Thanks anon.

Give gummis to any Pokémon you plan on using. Doesn't have to be you and your partner and it doesn't have to be legendaries. If you're playing Explorers, farming gummis is easy (just super boring) so it's not that big of a deal if you want to spread the love to more than just your favorite Pokémon.

Hmm. I would've argued that it maybe should be on a different location - but given that I am storing the IQ group, you're right.
Yes, a storage system isn't too different from another inventory. I had completely forgotten about it. Nice catch. That also reminds me to add the sell/buy price for items.

Hmm. To some degree stairs are a given - select a room and a location in it to put stairs, and it could be after the fact.
Traps I hadn't considered at all. Good eye, there.

I think it'd be fine if we did it like RT, GtI and Super (basically, they don't exist outside dialogues). They don't really add much in Explorers.

>>29063752
It helps if someone ever does a translation, probably.
See NineBox though - the idea of that is that you can change the dialog frames to whatever you like, so gender doesn't matter there.

This thing may start to be programmed as soon as we get a test tileset, a few other diagrams or the sprites formatted, in probably any order.

This'll be fun.

So, uh, apparently several status conditions can stack up and get cancelled in various ways. Does anybody here know the details or can help us science our way through it?

The various status effects are apparently split into different categories like Sleep related, and mobility related, and apparently you can only have one status effect from a category at a time.
There is a page on bulbapedo that describes the status effect categories and how they work. I just saved a copy of the page and I don't have the link, so you'll just have to search for it.

It's the last game with an IQ skill, one of which is a skill that prevents evolution, because there's no restriction on it. Apparently there's a thing called Towers in it, but i haven't gotten far enough. The only way you'll get any sense of familiarity is by linking your DS to it, so the controls are the same as Sky
