Its sort of the same reaction they had going from Dawn to Iris. Dawn was very popular at the time, even Pearlshipping had a huge following, then we went to Iris...Japan was disappointed, etc. Cilan was more popular than Iris was because Japan loves flamboyant borderline gay characters.

Japan only accepts certain characters. That's why the transition from May to Dawn was fine, and the addition of Serena was fine.

May/Drew ended pretty meh, pretty sure it was one last tease (while Drew remained clueless to the insinuation) and then May, Drew, and Harely just declared they'd be rivals forever and the crush wasn't brought up at all in May's cameo, she just talked about how she was getting her ass kicked Drew and Harely.

Alone is a good one if you're looking for something shorter and I enjoyed it more than most other stuff he has. I could see it being an episode if they were allowed to go the more mature direction they wanted with this gen of the anime.


Then there are oneshots like Open Fields and Lovesick that are enjoyable if you only want to read a bit.

What? AG Brock did a lot more than just "be there" like his DP counterpart.

Brock and May didn't have enough interactions though, sadly.

But I thought it was well done.
Brock mentors an Ash that's more mature, but still has his problems of self pride, and whatnot.

Ash in turn mentors May, and her battle style pre-Wallace Cup shows it all. He also tutors her how to handle loss, and a bit of how to deal with ego as well.

I thought the AG Quartet did fine chemistry wise. Could have been polished better, certainly, but as a product of its time, they're a novel bunch.
