Can we take a moment to discuss why All of Ash's Pokemon just faint from Mega Gyrados?

Is it because they are still tired from the league?

Is it the small amount of space that they have to work with on top of the tower?

Is it because Ash doesn't send his flying Pokemon around the Gyrados and attack from behind while the ones that rely on land to attack form the front making it a 6v1 or 7v1 if Edgezard joins in.

Wouldn't that mean that Alan's Charizard just tanked all of Pikachu's attacks, Greninja's attacks and super effective stone edge + dragon tails from a pokemon that oneshots Ash's team?

A simpler answer is: Mega Gyarados is just absurdly powerful. You saw how Lysandre's Pyroar was able to hold off Greninja and required the cooperation of Ash's pokemon to take down. His Gyarados is even more so. Mega AND shiny which makes it super special in anime.

Difference here is that at the end of XY60 it was very obviously a blush related to romance. We didn't need blushes because we knew she still loved Ash after that episode. XY80 just reinforced it.

Ash and Serena's relationship did grow quite a bit during the series, not romantically but just the two of them and how they interact together.

If you look at the start, not only with Serena but the whole cast except maybe Bonnie, they are entirely different characters then how they started.

Clemont was so uncertain and afraid at the start of the series, hesitant to do anything productive to reclaim the gym since he was afraid. He's come so far as to being able to destroy one of his friends to protect others. Clemonts development is one of the best in the series.

Serena went from a nervous, anxeity filled girl who started her Journey to meet the boy who saved her years ago to someone who knows who she is and wants to do. From being afraid of getting dirty to someone who would get into the worst of it if it meant doing what's right. For the first I think 25 episodes Serena never felt like a Pokemon Trainer, she was just a girl who was following her crush. Now that's completely changed, she knows how to battle, how to perform, how to take care and raise the Pokemon she owns.
