PSMD download: http://pastebin.com/uR5bKJkw (NOTE: The English upload is down for the time being, and I don't have a spare on hand since I didn't upload that.)

Check the guides at >>>/vg/hbg if you don't know how to install the game. You won't lose any online feature or anything doing so, don't worry. You will be able to do everything that you'd normally be able to and much more.

Exploration Pack (Sky, Blue RT, DS emulator, rom editor for custom starters, all WiiWare games region-free): https://mega.nz/#!Pt9GQZgR!KWFSUTYSh3ylhXFpbjozzzuAcC2-GaFhNaOuq67q1RM

REMINDER: If you need a rescue, post your region. Due to a few things that make no sense, rescues are region locked. It's shitty, but be sure to mention if you're European or American. If you use the .cia in this post, your region should be listed as American.

Guess I'll try to get all 720 mons and cap my stats, then. Should be much easier than recruiting everyone in Sky.
Might also try to modify connected Pokemon to see how the game responds to that.

How do you modify connected Pokemon?

This game feels so unfair sometimes.
>>
>>27775885
I haven't actually tested it yet, but I just assumed I could use the AR3DS codes that change the first and second Pokemon, and use that with a team that doesn't lead with the player/partner.

If that doesn't work, I'll just check the RAM out using NTR and try to change them from there.

About 8 tries, but one of them doesn't count as I cucked myself into Sticky Trap and was basically trying to roll a 7.6% chance. For reference, Suicune took 3.

You know Lugia is one of the legends with 99.9% recruit rate, right? I had more problems with Kyogre; about 4 tries before I finally fucked outplayed the coinflip.

I seriously don't get why 100% recruitment for all legendary bosses on the first try besides Rayquaza isn't a thing in RT. Seems like a dumb way to pad out gameplay time.

Depends on who goes first and both Drifblim and the enemy's positioning on the map, their stats, both mons' moves, along with whether both have access to Treasure Bag items or not.
Through natural levelup moves, Drifblim probably has an advantage against most non-Normal/Dark mons due to Ominous Wind hitting from afar, and if they're positioned properly, can get a few Minimize boosts in before the other Pokemon even approaches it.

I'm currently playing through the PMD games in order, I absolutely loved the first one (did everything except purity forest, I figured finishing wish cave was enough stress, finished the post game story, etc).
Two questions, anons.
>When should I do the special episodes in Explorers of Sky?
Just unlocked the very first one, not sure when I should do it. Now? Later once I have lots of items to make it easier? After finishing the main game? After finishing the post game?
>Why is Gates to Infinity considered bad, and should I play it or skip to PSMD?
I've heard this a lot and I'm curious, especially if I end up playing through gates and it sucks. For the record, I love the story of the first PMD as well as its gameplay, so if its gameplay sucks but story is good I might still give it a go.
>>
>>27787908
Water types and Skitty have the best houses in PMD1 though
>he doesn't bench his starters

>>27787988
You can do special episodes any time. They're still pretty easy to complete without having to take out items from the storage. Try to rank up a bit before you play them since your storage space might be too small to contain items you collect from special episodes.
Gameplay-wise, Gates is a bit more shallow than the rest in the series. Most people say it has the best story, or at least a good one. Personally thought the partner was a bit shittier, but the other supporting characters are good enough to make up for that.
>>
>>27787988
>Just unlocked the very first one, not sure when I should do it. Now? Later once I have lots of items to make it easier? After finishing the main game? After finishing the post game?
Whenever you want.

>Why is Gates to Infinity considered bad, and should I play it or skip to PSMD?
It lacks most of the features from the other games, it only starts being kind of decent once the story is over. If you plan on doing pointless story dungeons and to pay attention to small details, you may kind of enjoy it. Some think its story is the best. There are reasons to play it, so if you like the series then you probably should. Playing it before Super might be better for you, but do whatever you want.

>so if its gameplay sucks but story is good I might still give it a go.
That's exactly the case. There's still some unique gameplay stuff unique to GtI that you might enjoy though.
>>
>>27788072
Super's the only time I don't bench the protag.
>>
>5 tries at entei, still doesn't want to join the cute bunny holding friend bow
i've just hit lv. 51. i am rolling for a 1 in 5 shot right now. If this continues like that, I will have to stop and continue tomorrow, cause I am running out of time.

At least Ho-Oh's not going to be a pain in the ass.
>>
>>27787947

>>
>>27788072

>>

>>27788072
Thanks a bunch. Guess I'll suffer through Gates. Really looking forward to playing PSMD but I'm gonna go through Sky and Gates first. Looking forward to all of these, actually, I've heard a lot of good things about sky and fucking hell I LOVED blue/red.
>>
>>27787988
Special episodes you can pick up anytime, but personally I put them off until after finishing the story and postgame (by postgame I mean post-credits story, not the post-postgame). None of them are significantly harder than anything the story throws at you (though of course the fifth one is more of a gauntlet than the first one), but as long as you have storage space, then you're good to go.

As for Gates, it's got a lot of good content and interesting concepts, ones that are arguably a lot more interesting than what Super did... but it comes at the cost of essentially gutting the core gameplay of most of its depth and features. IQ is replaced by team-spanning unlockable skills, hunger is no longer a thing, inventory management is less relevant, so on and so forth. It gets better in the post-postgame, when you get to the challenge dungeons, but not by much. It's tedious to play through. Super is kind of the same yet opposite, because it only gets good after the post-postgame because it stops jumping down your throat at every opportunity and really opens up to let you take missions at your own discretion.

Should've specified that I was talking about the postgame being good gameplay-wise and in terms of length, if you're looking for plot then it's way worse. There's Level 1 dungeons, and in RT you have all those anti-savescum 99F dungeons, GtI, while not particularly challenging at least brings back the core gameplay mechanics it removed in the maingame, and Super has the connection orb system. Even though there's almost no plot in the postgame, I found it a lot more enjoyable from a gameplay experience.

In-dungeon quotes are tied to the characters themselves, not what species the mon is. I'd have to connect with everyone before compiling that, which would take some time.

Couldn't think of anything else, really. Zorua was because of that guy running Gates with him made me realize custom starters were a thing for the 3DS games.

>>
>>27797853
Not exactly modding the .cia, but you can change your starters. If you have CFW installed, you can use NTR's RAM viewer to change mons, including your starters, or use AR3DS codes to do the same.

Modding starters is a bit weirder than Explorers. Their base movesets and stats will be the same as the starter they replaced (in my case, Totodile/Treecko), and they'll start off with the same ability as those starters. For the partner, in cutscenes she looked like the original starter (Treecko) but inside of the Drilbur Mine dungeon she was Jigglypuff. After beating Gabite, both the abilities and the partner's cutscene model were fixed, becoming Run Away/Cute Charm, and Jigglypuff showed up as herself in the cutscenes from that point onwards instead of as a Treecko. Not sure what would happen if you modded them after beating Gabite.

Pretty strange how Gates doesn't auto-fix abilities like in the other games.

The custom Expedition Society members got their abilities fixed after a while, just like with Poochyena/Jigglypuff. Using a Lucha Token can also fix their abilities quicker. Their names are still mixed up, however.

Just played through it again recently, Personally had a lot of fun with it, and gameplay-wise it fixes a lot of problems Gates had and requires more strategy than the othet games (at least until the postgame where you can cheese it with stat boosters, just like in Explorers of Sky). The plot's not bad. There's a lot of references to the past three games, too.
Only problem I really had with it was the break system, which is kind of bullshit.

Yes. You can also choose if you don't like what you get, too.

Either download the debugger (NTRClient or one of the forks) or the RAM plugin. Then edit the physical RAM addresses at http://pastebin.com/iahAZvA8 with the values you want, for GtI. If you want to do it for Super, get the addresses from fort42.com/gateshark and the values from psmd.skyeditor.org

If you use the debugger you'll have to use the write command, unless you use a fork that gives you an interface for it.
If you use the RAM Viewer plugin, select the process, press start, enter the address and edit the value

While having premade BGs saves time, you also have to take the mon's base color palette into account, such as replacing white with the next lightest color so that when you convert the image to index w/16 colors, you don't end up loosing a lot of the mon's original colors in the process when it tries to keep both colors within the indexed palette.

You can't just add the mon on a BG and expect it to be 16 colors automatically and work.

Example is pic related; each of these portraits uses different, lighter shades to convey the white light in each mon's eyes. Understanding how color works helps with how you can keep them within the palette and look natural.
>>
>>27813492
You pretty much need apples and elixirs, otherwise you'll just starve/run out of pp (though I've almost always left a dungeon with more elixirs than when I started).
At that point, the dungeon should be easy enough.

You get two options (cool and cute, maybe) for the MC, the partner is the other pick and this changes around the dialogue and actions of the MC and partner.
Of course that would need a more active MC that isn't constantly thinking to itself instead of talking, more like the partner instead.

>>
>>27820894
Red/Blue postgame is kinda interesting, as you essentially have various branches.

Gimme a sec, I'll post how it goes.
>>
>>27820978
By default, you don't have much; only Waterfall Pond which you can't even access right now. The first thing you need to do is talk to people (first, Medicham) about Lombre accident to unlock Stormy Sea and Solar Cave.

Clearing Stormy Sea and Pitfall Valley unlocks Silver Trench. Clear that, and you get Meteor Cave.

After buying Southern Island FA and picking up HM Surf, Northern Range is unlocked; clear that and you get the Pitfall Valley needed for Stormy Sea.

Once you pick up Surf from Solar Cave, you will unlock the Ho-Oh dungeon chain, which interestingly enough goes past Ho-Oh (Fiery Field->Lightning Field->Northwind Field->Mt. Faraway->Western Cave). Note that you need to recruit Ho-Oh to get the last one.

Buried Relic is unlocked by reading a special mail and talking to people in Square; you supposedly get mail sometime after beating Stormy Sea.

The Lv. 1 dungeons are unlocked by clearing Pitfall Valley and getting Sky Blue Plains FA. How do you get it? In a random mission. YEAH. Help Medicham in Wish Cave and clear Stormy Sea to trigger Murky Cave events.

Desert Region is unlocked with Furnace Desert FA. Southern Cavern and Wyvern Hill need Boulder Cave and Dragon Cave FAs, respectively, both of which are the other two random FAs. Darknight Relic requires Secretive Forest FA. Grand Sea and Far-off Sea require Serene Sea FA. Unown Relic requires both Aged Chambers.

There are also 4 more dungeons you can get with Wonder Mail. I suggest doing so, as the two that are water-themed can spawn Tight Belt on floor. Yeah.

Howling Forest can be accessed before credits roll; it requires Sky Blue Plains.
>>
>>27821112
Also, you need legendary birds recruited to initiate Silver Trench events (you talk to Alakazam, then birds give you the Vortex Stone).
>>
>>27821112
If I'm not mistaken, you can use a wondermail generator to get Sky Blue Plains, no fuss.

>look up 4 stars pokemon
>legendary birds were 4 stars in rescue team
literally why

Discounting these guys, the smallest 4 star is Lapras. He got reduced to 2, making the smallest one Groudon, at 3.5m.

However, gigantic Pokemon seem to be the equivalent of 4 stars, giving Xerneas that title, with 3m. Serperior, Arbok and Dragonair are snakes, Zygarde is big enough.

Let's assume stars were based more on size and not being broken, like that fucking 4 stars castform. What would be the intervals?

Most Pokemon were 1*, some were 2*, and there are also the biggest at 4*. Nothing had 3 stars.

Also, probably be able to form team without having to look for Pokemon

Why even live. They already shot down AM2R at least officially, as 1.01 was recently released, fixing Gravity Suit glitch, among few other fixes and things.

Explorers seems to be the one who got recruiting new Pokemon the best. Rescue Team has this shit, Super relies all the way on Connection Orb which kinda trivializes it desu, and Gates doesn't even have all Unova Pokemon.

Well, I can hope.

Some of the newer mechanics could really shine here. Like Groudon goes Primal and it's up to you AND Team ACT to stop that fucker.

Call me a heretic, but I'd like to see 721 Pokemon available. Using Sky's recruiting mechanics (dying doesn't make recruits go away, no star size/party size limits, no Pokemon are exclusive to Lv. 1 dungeons, etc.), of course, as Rescue Team is already hard as balls with the 386 it has.

I want this to see probably because of all new Friend Areas that would be in. They're just so comfy, they make me think of bad ideas

Alright, everyone, list your favorite and least favorite thing from each game.

>RRT/BRT
>Like: Creating your own base
This was fun as fuck, and the nostalgia from doing a similar thing in GTI is really what made me tolerate the shitty mechanics of that game.
>Dislike: Buying friend areas
Seriously, recruiting something only to realize you had no friend area was the worst feeling. I liked how comfy friend areas were, but they really could have been executed better. Maybe a Pokemon can hang out in a different area, but you can't bring it with until you get its friend area?

>EOS
>Like: The sheer amount of postgame
No other game, mainline or spinoff, can compare. I can spend just as much time in the postgame as I did in the main game, doing missions as quickly as they appear. It's wonderful.
>Dislike: Certain player/partner Pokemon
Riolu/Eevee is cute, cuuute, and being crippled because she runs away at half health is terrible. I just wish the Sky editor could fix that.

>GTI
>Like: Pokemon Paradise
Mostly on nostalgia from Rescue Team, but still. The idea of creating a Guild from scratch gave me such a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
>Dislike: Starter selection
I could live with the shitty dungeon mechanics, I could live with way-too-few recruitable Pokemon, but limiting my choices to 5 starters was terrible. Especially after Sky's selection. Snivy and Pikachu were the only good choices there - quadrupeds with no way to manipulate things are bad choices, Axew was so OP it made the game (more) boring, and Oshawott is ugly as sin for a Pokemon you'll be looking at for the whole game.

>Super
>Like: The characters before Lively Town
Sure, the Society members may have been flat (besides Archen and Ampharos), but the Serene Village children were great. Even in Lively Town, once the plot really kicked off I started getting involved.

Rescue Team:
>Like: Buried items
Sky had buried items, but RT had more dungeons with them, and had good items that weren't only Poke. It gave something more to look for and added incentive to explore floors, at least in the dungeons they were in.
>Dislike: Level's massive effect on damage outside of stats
This is in every game, but god damn is it extreme here. Simply put, an Alakazam at level 7 with like 30 special attack or whatever it is hits for 1-2 damage where a level 14 or so Keckeon with the same Special Attack will hit for far more

How do I take on the postgame legendaries? they are able to one shot every single team memeber with ease and I can't deal enough damage back, even with a full page of reviver seeds. I have already stat boosted my starters with vitamins a bunch (all stats are between 85 and 100).

>>27829543

>>
>>27829570
Truant is the most important, since bosses can't change their ability back and will keep losing turns for the rest of the fight. The others can just sometimes buy you an extra turn of not being one-shotted, but that can still be useful.

I'd say +10 to all stats is good until some of the late post-game dungeons, where you'll want to add another 10. If you just go nuts with them it just kills any challenge and makes it all less fun.

One thing I always disliked about these games is that I really like Steel types, but the only choices for steel starters are Riolu and Piplup, and both of those require evolution.

I noticed in the OP a thing to get custom starters; how complicated is that? Would it be game breaking to start as an Aron or Skarmory or something?
>>
>>27830379
In Rescue Team, custom starters are currently impossible as the game freezes in cutscenes (due to no special animations).
In Explorers, most Pokemon don't really have any emotion portraits, so they will use default ones. Also, no special animations, so eg. they will "sleep" weirdly.

>Rescue Team
>Like: Friend Areas
I've mentioned this in an earlier thread, but I like the Friend Areas a lot because I always viewed them as the small towns and villages to Pokemon Square's "big city". On top of being wonderful pieces of pixelart each and everyone of them, seeing them slowly fill up with more and more recruits made the entire world feel more alive and vibrant, which helped the game's sense of scope.
>Dislike: Friend Areas
Unfortunately, as the other anon mentioned, having to buy them, or recruiting something and realizing you didn't have the right area yet, was absolutely infuriating. Perhaps having them unlock automatically would have been better, though then maybe they would have defeated the point.

>Explorers
>Like: Amount of content
I know that technically Super has "the most content of any PMD game", but Explorers has always felt more compelling to me, story-wise and gameplay-wise. The "ways to make Pokemon great" anon offers a good point why - with numerous treasures, IQ groups and various other things to discover, there's an enormous amount of depth tucked away.
>Dislike: IQ EXP Curve
This is my only real major nitpick with Explorers, but even though I think they got the IQ system very close to perfect, the sheer amount of gummis needed to maximize it is the biggest crippling downfall the system has. It can take the entire precredits and postcredits content to get enough gummis to max out your player and partner, and once you hit post-postcredits stuff, it's hard to motivate yourself to do it all again for another mon.
>>
>>27830379
It's pretty easy to do.
>game breaking
The regular starters have better stats than normal Pokémon in Explorers. If you avoided boosting your naturally lower stats could make up for your type.

>Like: Pokemon Paradise
I think the idea of having your own customizable base was the best way they could have expanded on Explorers' gameplay - it allows for tons more personalization while also offering more motivation to keep doing missions as well as being a potential moneysink (I have nearly 300k gold in Explorers and nothing to spend it on).
>Dislike: Take a guess
Unfortunately, all that customization and general good ideas-ing came at the cost of pretty much gutting the core gameplay, which is an incredible shame. Small roster, changes to IQ, lack of hunger, and the general lack of content and "depth" compared to Explorers was a big disappointment.

>Super
>Like: Small QoL changes
Super isn't a game I'm very fond of, so usually when I think about the good I think about "man if it hadn't wasted its potential here this would have been awesome", but I will readily admit that the little quality of life changes make for a smoother experience, save for one or two. Changing leaders, hardcoding certain IQ skills as a permanent part of teammate AI, etc etc, make things that little bit more pleasant.
>Dislike: Emeras
There's a lot of stuff I could put here for aforementioned reasons, but I think Emeras hit a sore spot for me because of how much I love the IQ system in Explorers, but also because I feel like Emeras could have surpassed them in some ways. IQ skills were basically "classes", while Emeras allow you to customize what skills each Pokemon has via the looplets. The idea that you could collect lots of emeras and then set up looplets before a dungeon-crawl in order to customize your characters even further was an incredibly appealing idea (like Etrian MD's skill trees, except even more in your hands). Unfortunately, since Emeras always disappear and lack any real permanence, it just wasn't to be.
>>
>>27830835
I suppose you're right about emeras, although personally I feel the Connection Orb was a worse sin. Out of curiosity, would you have liked rarer "rainbow emeras" that remain in the looplet between dungeons but can never be taken out once put in place, specifically in conjunction with normal emeras?
>>
>>27828816
Rescue Team
>Like: Friend Areas
Comfy as fuck and the ultimate incentive to recruit them all
>Dislike: Can't send recruits back
I've been to Silver Trench and Joyous Tower too many times

Explorers
>Like: Treasures
Lots of nice treasures in dungeons behind locked doors and at the end of the level 1 dungeons to encourage exploring.
>Dislike: Guild characters
The guild members do basically nothing and have little characterisation, but get loads of screentime. Special Episodes helped a bit, though.

Gates
>Like: Paradise
Being able to build up the area around your base with facilities and have your recruits stay there is great. Having building materials as rewards for missions makes doing them worthwhile since the rewards aren't just things you can pick up in a dungeon.
>Dislike: Lack of engaging post-game objectives
Weren't any interesting treasures and you had to get lucky to get a chance at recruiting the legendaries. After you've built the good stuff in Paradise all you have left is dojos for types you don't use. Not so much to do.

Super
>Like: Teammates are more useful
Better AI means they position themselves more effectively, ranged attacks passing through allies means they can chip in in corridor fights, and higher enemy HP means their attacks matter more. And they'll pick up items for you.

EoS
>Liked Spinda's Cafe and the Shaymin quest
Despite the length of Gummi-grinding, I always liked the cafe, and the fact it actually had a story with Sky Peak (which was fun as fuck to play through)
>Disliked the storage space
RT had the right idea with being able to stack items in storage and have no limits. Why the fuck EoS gave you limits is another thing.

GTI
>Liked the characters
After a second playthrough and Super, I've come to like GTI's small cast. Only complaint is Munna's gang being rather big and oddballed, and the other 2 musketeers not being part of the story
>Disliked Paradise
There's a lot of things I hate in GTI, and Paradise I feel was the most useless thing ever.
You can barely get any items from taking only 1 god damn job a day and making me crawl to build mostly useless facilities isn't worth building it.

Super
>Liked the game's improved AI and general item usage
This game fucking trained me to use items and not be shy about it with its murderous difficulty.
>Disliked the story
As interesting as it was, the fact that it felt so out-of-place and more at home in GTI made me dislike it entirely. Why they didn't make Super just an updated GTI is beyond me.
>>
>>27830995
The Connection Orb also bugs me, but for all its problems, it still means there were "technically" more Pokemon available. It might have come with a lot of strings attached, but still.

The idea of certain permanent emeras showing up in some looplets is a nice idea, but it doesn't sound all that much different from the looplets that have effects attached to them already. What I was thinking was being able to collect lots of emeras (maybe even have a separate storage for them?), rifling through the ones you want and don't want, and then attaching them to your looplets in order to create... well, "builds", so to speak. The emeras themselves would probably need some more balancing tweaks to make up for the fact that they'd be permanent, but I feel like that idea would slot in nicely with the whole personalization aspect of Pokemon, being able to make your team your own and everything.
>>
>>27832877
That's sort of what I was imagining. There would be the current emeras, but rarely you could find Rainbow Emeras that could be taken out of dungeons. These could be set in any looplet you had, but couldn't be removed once set, and would permanently stay in the looplet. You'd be faced with a choice - gamble on finding better non-permanent emeras in the dungeon, risk finding better emeras and having a subpar looplet, or...?

I have a hacked o3ds and a non-hacked n3ds XL (firmware 11+). I have no money, but I want to play super mystery dungeon.

>Like: Friend Areas
They were pretty cool looking, and Pokemon having their own habitats that they live in was nice.
>Dislike: How Friend Areas were handled
For fucks sake stop automatically taking Pokemon off my team after every mission. Also, getting used to the way they worked was a bit confusing, leaving a friend area takes you to a map screen, instead you have to press B to bring up the list of Pokemon again.

Explorers
>Like: the Manaphy quest
Broing it out with your partner and raising a kid was cute.
>Dislike: the difficulty
Or rather, lack of it. Certain IQ skillsets completely break the game, and the game can be made even easier simply by using all of your Gummis. Almost all of the enemies in the game can be steamrolled by simply using your STAB move and later A attack once the Gummi gains start kicking in.

Gates
>Like: The plot/characters
Having a group of 5 instead of just you and your partner really helped give the team more of a personality. I felt like a lot of the cast served a purpose overall.

To evolve, or not to evolve? Riolu/Fennekin duo here. The benefits are a plethora of new moves for Riolu and a Steel typing, while Fennekin gets some new Psychic-type moves, a few new tutor moves, and a pair of arms. The downside is that I lose the cute portraits and the wake-up animations. Is it worth it, and will the Destiny Tower sequence have any different cutscenes if I take it as a pair of unevolved 'mons?
>>
>>27847426
Evolving's fine for your starters if you prefer the way the evolved forms look or if they have better movesets, but otherwise there's not much of a benefit. In the postgame only three portraits get used anyway (neutral, sweating, and in your partner's case smiling) and since every Pokemon has those three, you don't lose any expressiveness. Wouldn't recommend evolving anyone but starters, since you won't get replacements for them if you do that, so they're gone forever.
Not sure on the Destiny Tower part though.
>>
>>27847504
I'd agree on not evolving anyone else, and the only others I'd like to evolve can't be evolved anyway - the Serene Village kids and the unevolved Society members, specifically. It'd just be nice to see them growing up/getting stronger with us, but oh well.

And yeah, on Destiny Tower, I could see them using you and your partner's surprised portraits (and maybe your partner's proud portrait) upon receiving the invitation or making it to the top, and maybe even upon completing the treasure list. Can anyone who's completed either or both confirm?

7 hours later, Western Cave episode is finally on YouTube. Time to have SOME fun and not pain and misery.
Omega Ruby loses focus faster on Citra than Gates; probably because it uses 3D more. There are also graphical issues here and there, but it's playable if you know how to handle it. We entering 3DS emulation era, ladies.

Weird.

Also reposting the PSMD and GTI download links since we reached bump limit. Almost all the ones in the OP are dead, and it's still not updated, so hopefully whoever makes the new thread will do that.

So I just got SMD to fill in time until Sun/Moon, and I can't settle on a starter + partner. What's the partner's personality like this time around?
I don't want to start playing and end up resetting for new starters like I did with Sky.

Also, my favorites from each gen are
>Charmander
>Totodile
>Treecko
>Turtwig
>Oshawott
>Chespin
And I hate Riolu, but like Pikachu. I don't ever evolve my starters either.
Suggestions?
