What I mean is the reason they're so impressive by XY is they're going directly from what they remember of Johto to XY....of course its going to seem like a masterpiece in comparison. Leaving the improved animation aside, they think that this is the first saga since the OS that has rivalries, character focus, or development for the main girl.

They're so impressed by Alan because they never watched DP to see Paul. They think Ash evolving his pokemon is something new, whereas he's been evolving most of his pokemon but a few in past arcs. They think Serena gets the most amount of screentime for a main girl, but that's only true if they only know Misty, etc.

I only watched the first series and the whole of DP and some of the movies and I'm watching the new anime.

I get it, you're long time fans and need to feel special somehow, but now that the anime is apparently much better than before, people will have interest since it appeals to a broader audience.

When IV aired, it was a 1 hour feature with XYZ1, so that means Act IV is mandatory after the last XY episode, and should be immediately followed by XYZ1.
