Most have realized Paul is a rival that is never going to be topped. The writers truly outdid themselves.

Paul's two full battles with Ash are still regarded as the best battles in the entire series by many. They do not necessarily have the best animation; it was more the tension between Ash and Paul that made their battles so great and exciting. When they clashed it felt like everything was on the line. You just don't get that same intense feeling when Ash battles the likes of Shota and Alan.
