I doubt they'd give a rival two starters. Eelektross is a good guess though. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say his last mon has a chance of being Pyroar, Pangoro, Malamar, Dragalge (this one is very much a maybe), or Trevenant. My money is on Pangoro.

Isn't Alan like, way older than Manon? I've seen people shipping them but I can't. Manon already looks way younger than Ash, and Alan is like one head taller than him. I can see her as a cute little sister/travel companion for him, but not as his waifu. I can't see edgy teenager+little girl=love happening.

Honestly speaking, there was probably nothing he could've done. His analysis determined that Ash Greninja is more powerful at close quarter combat and always tries to close in the distance from his opponents rather than using ranged attacks, which is why keeping it at bay with a very powerful ranged move like Frenzy Plant was Mega Sceptile's best option. It was a sound strategy until Ash Greninja decided he had enough of that bullshit and conjured up a ridiculously OP ranged attack to end it.

In my opinion, the relationship between Ash and Shota is pretty cool, minus the homosexual undertones. He's Ash's only real rival, at first it just seemed like only Shota was getting stronger because of Ash, but then it sorta turned around when Ash realized he wouldn't be able to beat Shota in the league (or possibly even get to the league) if he didn't get his shit together. So, you know, Shota is just a much better rival for Ash than Alain is in my opinion.
