The anime has long since surpassed the games.

The only two good matches in this full battle were Pikachu VS Aegislash and Greninja vs Sceptile. The rest was mediocre, especially Goodra and Noivern's fights which were clearly rushed as they only lasted 2 minutes each and included no strategy, just mindless attacking back and forth.

The battle as a whole wasn't nearly as good as Ash vs Paul, but it was to be expected, since Ash VS Shota was only really 1½ episode long and only the latter episode had good animation.

I'm talking about the overall experience and realism of the battles. Battles are closer to what they would normally be if the games weren't some shitty old-fashioned turn-based RPG that barely innovate with each generation.
The anime and Pokken feel a lot more like what actual fights would be if GF wasn't made of lazy fucks applying a past formula and resting on built up fame rather than actually doing thing.

Actually, Clermont is the only character that actually got worse. Serena changed and had her whole overarching arc with the Tripokalon and her evolution, Bonnie became absolutely loveable and her episodes are usually the most fun, but also the most emotional. I really do not think Ohashi is better than Iwane. His art is severely lacking. Yes, Ohashi is good at animating swift movements, but without good art to support it, it doesn't really look as awesome as when Iwane does it. Just rewatched Infernape vs Electvire.

The bouts of strategy there were Infernape using Dig, and Electvire catching the monkey with its tail/antennae/whatever that apppendage is called to shock it at close range. Everything else were exchanges of attacks and blows, and Infernape overpowering its opponent when Blaze activated.
