This is where I believe the show is headed. The show would eliminate the references from the past and have Ash start off as a novice trainer in each new season. Its the best way to preserve Ash & Pikachu as the mascots of the brand, while providing a "fresh" character that a kid who hopping on the show at the beginning of the new generation won't feel left out.
