I already can't. From the moment Pokemon of all things, a long running anime 900+ episodes in drops stock backgrounds, I feel like no other anime has any right in using them other than for mechas doing over the top transformation sequences.
It sadly makes it very hard to watch older Pokemon episodes though when I'm being triggered every 2 minutes by a Pokemon using an attack then suddenly there's a red and yellow background zooming by.

What are you talking about? I see the same things here that people complained about for Ash vs. Gary, except even more of a KO fest, even in the end. The only thing it has over it is better buildup. (not that difficult, everything about Gary was imaginary) However, with Gary, at least in the end, it felt more like a fight between equals, whereas this was a fight against someone that had no business fighting him to start with.

Now that you mention it, the only time Shota managed to land a direct hit was with that Leaf Storm missile (the one that hurt Ash). The rest of the time its attacks either clashed with Greninja's or were simply evaded/cut through.

Sceptile wasn't that much of a challenge for Synchro Froge, maybe Edgezard will push it to the limit.

Honestly, other than Sceptile vs Greninja, the Shota full battle was shit. Rushed battles was the most serious problem. Hard to enjoy fights that only lasts for 2 minutes.

It's becoming more and more apparent that I think Alan is not going to be part of the Flare attack. All of their plans have crumbled at once, and they can no longer trust him. This causes them to act before anyone can stop them. Whether that means Ash wins or not, I still don't know. All I know is that he either wins or something happens that he might as well have won. What that means for the future is equally uncertain.

I think it would make more sense for Alan to lose.
If he loses he'll likely calm down from having the "I have to be the strongest!" mentality, losing would also give him healthy competition, possibly a new appreciation for battles where he battles for fun instead of trying to chase after some goal while dancing to the tune of Lysandre. Maybe Ash causes him to reconcile with Professor Sycamore and in coming to respect Ash as the champion, a rival and a friend it would make more sense when he decides to side with Ash to stop corrupt Zygarde when it begins wrecking the shit out of Lumiose so he can protect Manon and Sycamore.

It could be Alan's realization that TF isn't the peace protecting organization that Alan was led to believe they were.
Plus if Lysandre gets the other Zygarde core he's practically untouchable. He'll probably try and protect them and restore the other one to normal (maybe after things have boiled down, Puni-chan can help Hari-san out of it's comatose state?)
Ash wanting to protect Puni-chan would likely take a very proactive approach in taking down Lysandre/TF and Alan would want to protect Sycamore, Manon and wouldn't want to return to an evil organization, maybe he sees it as an atonement of sorts, but doesn't feel he has the right to be called a "hero" since he's partly responsible for Bluni-chan's capture and corruption.

"It's not as bad as it could have been" is not the point. Again it was good, but you can't compare it to Paul. Paul was a climax to a series-long ideological/character conflict as well as the star Pokemon's character arc. It had way more tension and way more on the line, so it was much more meaningful.

Ash vs Shota could have had Disney animation and it still wouldn't measure up. Shota was just a bump in the road for Ash.
