Im in the UK and people are playing it a lot. Every park i've been to has had atleast one person playing Go which is suprising.

I dislike the gym system though. Only being able to put one pokemon down while challengers can use a whole team really annoys me. They need a gym leader type scenario whee the leader can put up to 5 or 6, and the others work as gym trainers who can put up to 2 or 3 pokemon, to make it feel like a gym in game. At the moment my 700cp hypno keeps getting beat by shit teams of 100cp mons that horde me, only for me to recapture later.

There is, it sorts on terrain rather than region. I'd link Reddit but to give you a gist it goes like, "water, local, grass, etc"

Sort of related, I strapped my phone to my handlebars and tested biking with it.
