For battle? Pretty much what Ash does already with it. If only Ash could momentarily manipulate the water to continue the 'winged mode" Greninja has. Sure it won't fly, but gliding sure could be useful. It worked for Hawlucha.

Kalos League isn't a league where Ash battles mostly his equals, that is to say trainers that are equal or higher compared to his strength and abilities. Pretty much every league before Ash had to struggle against some literal who nearly catching him off guard until he gets his shit together and pulls off a win. This time it is different.

This time it is Ash who turned the tables. No one is Ash's equal in this league, apart from perhaps Shota, with whom Ash will probably best in their battle. Damn, even Mega Evolution users pale in comparison to Ash and Alain, and Alain is Ash's superior in terms of raw strength. Moreover, he hasn't even revealed a single mon of his other than Charizard and Metagross. Kinda interesting turn of events.

"Edgy" is something this fandom has made up. In the writers point of view, Alan is simply a friendly rival to Ash, which means he will win the league.

Not to mention Alan has only met Ash for two episodes prior to the league, so he's more like a league rival like Tyson and Harrisson. Alan really is the perfect guy for Ash to lose to in the final.

Serena's VA saying this is her last year voicing the character is telling, even if that was a slip and she probably shouldn't have said that. I don't believe the dub is completely left in the dark as to what's going to happen in an upcoming saga which will likely have a cast change.

The writers don't actually expect people to watch more than one or two regions. When they soft reset Ash, it's with the expectation that the viewer base will mostly consist of kids new to the franchise.

Amour was XY's viewer-grabbing gimmick the same way the OS throwbacks were BW's. SM will have something shiny and new to grab the kids, and there's a very real possibility that the writers will use the Amourfag exodus to reset Ash to BW or at least AG levels. If we're lucky, the writers might take Ash's popularity compared to BW as a hint and at least keep him somewhat competent.

Well, I only know of one time we were given an additional character right off the bat, that being that Dawn was featured for DP. There's a lot of semantics for BW's development, and I don't recall when exactly the character sheet for it was leaked in comparison to when the anime was announced.

Ignoring the fact that the only viewership that matters is the one that watches the show on japanese tv, most of the new, non-japanese, non-children viewership consists of people who had already dropped the anime at any earlier point. They might have come back because whatever reason they might have: Ash being competent again, Serena's crush, Alan, Ash-Greninja, or any combination or these.

That kind of shit only works once in these kinds of shows. Even DP could have been considered in its time as some kind of "testing water" for Ash getting close to winning of getting a girl or whatnot, but 20 years later, if the predictable ending gets pulled off again, most people will be finally convinced that the show will never go anywhere but the same formula being repeated every generation until Game Freak goes bankrupt, and most probably the only PokeAni fanbase remaining will be (even smaller than today's) pockets of autists here and there getting excited for shit like relative Ash's levels of skill, new mons getting showcased, quality of animation, and Shoko.

So basically, they will turn into the same people that buy the same game every generation, except the game features new critters and adds or takes a little few things from the previous iteration. If they weren't already.
