The only thing I find weird about this is most of Ash's battles in the league will probably be off-screen or skipped over. Granted he's only using his Kalos team so I suppose it doesn't matter, but even in the Hoenn league Ash got 3 different 6 on 6 battles and a whole bunch of 2 on 2 battles and used the same pokemon.

What I find very strange is Tobias never even got an intro episode. I remember he didn't even speak till Ash's battle with him.

All the other league rivals Ash lost too all got intro episodes at the start of the leagues like Richie, Harrisson, Tyson, Cameron, etc. But Tobias did not. Really makes you realize he wasn't planned at all and he was largely rushed in there at the last minute to have Ash lose.

I still fully believe Ash vs. Paul was originally intended for the finals of the Sinnoh league but the writers had to change it.
