Looking back, May and Dawn were lucky enough to last for 4 years. Good thing generations had 4 year gaps back then. I don't know why GameFreak went back to 3 year gens and this affects the anime as a result.

Why did BW go so overboard with the running gags? Steffan's name thing was done literally every time someone mentioned him by name, regardless of how many times it occurred in a single episode, and it was the same with Cameron's headband slap. No, the anime was pretty loose with those rules before AG.

It was never an issue with Pikachu though, it only knew Thundershock, Thunderbolt, Thunder and Quick Attack back then.
It used Agility ONCE, and that was before it had used Thunder.

Brock's gag was shit, but they generally used to keep it to once an episode. The BW stuff had no filter and just kept coming whenever they could do them, even if it meant 4 to 5 times in quick succession.

Even so, what happens in BW was just in one particular series and most of those recurring rivals were only in a few episodes.

We had Brock in Kanto, Johto, AG and DP....4 series in a row with the same exact repetitive gag everytime a female COTD showed up in an episode. So we probably sat through his gag for at least 500 something episodes at the minimum, aside from the ones no female character was in.
