I have a logical reason why Serena will be going with Ash to the alola region. It seems to be like the writers and do you fighters have been on the street with creating shitty female traveling companions for ash. After creating Serena, they didn't want to create any more shit girls . Let alone another traveling companion for him . So they might just fly to keep Serena with in the next region . It's not like those last three were bad. They were just missing something. Pikachu vs. Lucario, Froakie vs. Onix, and Hawlucha vs. Spritzee were great battles on itself but the rest of the battle just felt sort of lackluster compared to the other 5. Maybe because of the way it was animated it looks less intense or less dynamic.

Scenes that were awesome in my opinion and made the gym battle include the scene in which Surskit skates towards Pikachu, the scene in which Bunnelby uses dig and then the shot circles around Pikachu because he doesn't know where he is, the scene in which Hawlucha tries to use High Jump Kick on a spinning Avalugg, or when Weepinbell's and Frogadier's moves collide and Weepinbell comes up from out of the smoke or that moment in which Frogadier uses I think Double Team and Weepinbell uses Grass Knot after sensing where he was. Just small scenes like that which make a huge difference.
