I think Abomasnow was holding back during its fight with Luchabro. It got rekt so fast because Luchabro overpowered it easily with it's Flying Press.

And Gardevoir was about to get rekt hard at the end of its battle with Greninja. Diantha stopped holding back the minute she used Mega Evolution.

Just look at Gardevoir's moveset:

Spammable, and can increase in size, used effectively throughout the battle to test Greninja's power. Greninja just ended up being too strong and too fast for it.

Slow as fug during the day, decently fast at night. It was clearly impossible for Diantha to take advantage of the move once Synchro was activated. If the battle was at night, Gardevoir would've been a big threat.

Can't touch the Froge.

Used properly. It's not her fault Ash outsmarted her (by using Double Team, Gardevoir has no way of knowing which Greninja is real, meaning it has to expand the range of Reflect to cover each and every one, thereby weakening the actual defensive power of the move, which is how Greninja broke through).

It's really just a mismatch. It's like a battle between a Mega Sceptile and a Mega Swampert that doesn't know Ice Beam. Also, you always need to factor in that XY Ash is an Absolute Madman.

Its interesting that in Battle Frontier the writers also ramped up Contestshipping considerably from Hoenn, likely because they knew both characters were being written off together and were always going to compete against each other.

Perhaps Amour getting so much focus is the same deal as Contest at the end of AG, both Ash and Serena will be written off together.
