It's Demon. It's basically SMT as a roguelike, probably my favorite one overall. Is that Tangledeep game good? I like the Snes aesthetic but somebody was saying it's lame earlier.

I'm still experimenting with stuff and interface design is definitely open to feedback.

I just didn't want to skew the map display too far horizontally since it's already like 36x18 i think. I'm aiming to make it playable on standard windows cmd (25x80) and that's not a whole lot to work with. But now that you mention it, it's a pretty retarded layout. I'll see how it looks condensing the panes.

Can someone give me the quick rundown on Infra Arcana?
I really like the aesthetics but it feels really weird ( for some reason I can't access the instruction manual in game )
Is there a MiBe equivalent that lets you learn the game?
>>
>>184061661
Having more items is having more options which is always a good thing in my opinion. The faster EXP gain helps at first but all the Medic Bags, Gas Masks and Ammo really REALLY helps for when stealth fails you and combat is the only way out.

I'm engaging in some shenanigans to beat up Azog without any cure wounds or speed potions.

This little outcropping here is only 1 tile thick, and I can walk through walls. Each time he gets close to me I just walk to the other side, Azog has to walk the long way around to get at me again, and I get to take a few potshots at him with shard bolt. Then when he gets close I just walk through the wall again, he has to loop around to the other side, and the cycle repeats.

C++ with ncurses. I have several different RLs I want to make so I'm trying to make it possible to encapsulate both content and behaviour by making pretty much every mechanic configurable.

Not sure how much you've messed with machine learning but reinforcement training is a pretty cool approach. Good luck
>>
Saw the discussion on the previous thread about manuscript/potion appearances, and if they were static between different runs.

Of course they are supposed to be randomized - this is just due to the RNG issue (which also always creates the same starting level depending on your class).

With v19.1, on some machines you're playing with a fixed seed (this did not occur on my Linux machine where I do 99% of the testing).

The RNG issue is mostly caused by how the C++11/14 randomness functionality can silently(!) fall back on using a fixed seed, if it cannot find a source of randomness:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/18880654/why-do-i-get-the-same-sequence-for-every-run-with-stdrandom-device-with-mingw/18880689#18880689

It's not a problem with C++ in general, it's just that the API for std::random_device would really benefit from some function call to check if really works - or if you are running on a fallback solution. Perhaps also terminate the program if you try to use it.
>>
>>184088814
Yes this was just an oversight on my part. It will be fixed in v19.1.

I found two old rogue like games that are 15 years old at least.

The first one is Daimonin and the second one is Racewarkingdoms.

The first one has isometric graphics and is a role playing game, while the second one is text based. The first one has a lot of stuff in it and gets really deep when you actually get into it, but, the controls are dumb, while the second one is like cookie clicker in some ways, but, is still a role playing game, and doesn't get too different near the end.

Also try casting intrinsic spells (not from manuscripts) next to Altars and watch your spirit.

But yeah there could be some sort of sacrifice mechanic or something. Some day maybe.
>>
>>184096734
No, I've not tried that. Does it have a similar effect to a molotov?
>>184097470
I've not yet played as occultist yet desu.
Re sacrifce mechanic, I think there are two solid, interesting routes to go down- one would be that the character cuts themselves and bleeds onto the altar, and then receives a small bonus for the rest of the level. The other would be like Ru in dcss; to permanently sacrifice a limb or body part, in order to get a permanent bonus. Also like, grabbing a bunch of corpses and throwing them on the altar...

>>
>>184090876
It's data/json/itemgroups/forage.json - that defines where items will drop (foraging in the right season). You'll also need to define the item itself. Probably best to do it in multiple files - check out how other mods are structured.
>>
>>184100082
Yeah, the version I was playing with didn't have that folder, unfortunately. I've updated now though and it all works fine, so thanks anyway!
For some reason it gives me 100 of the item (soybeans, for reference) in a plastic bag rather than just dropping one or two like I told it to though. Maybe something to do with me putting it in the spices json too? Does it do that by default with spices?

Anyway, I'm just fucking around to learn how it all works at the moment. Is there anything specific I have to do to make the game recognize a new mod, or should I just have at it? I've just been fucking around with the core files, so far.
>>
Someone asked about unique artifacts in IA last thread. The Talisman of Resurrection saved me from a surprise encounter with Thing on D7. It works exactly like you'd expect.

>>184061461
Yeah, you need to make good use of all the ammo and guns lying around. And throwing knives. And rocks. Especially rocks.

>>184061870
War Veteran is the MiBe equivalent since you don't have to worry about losing turns switching weapons, and you can afford to take a good amount of damage and wounds. But the class you're "expected" to be playing by default is Rogue. After a while feel free to experiment with the squishy mage Occultist and the gimmick class, Ghoul.
>>
>>184100535
I take it that's a new item you made? What did you base it on?

As I recall things are either defined as individual items that stack, or as a single collective item with a number of charges. Spices are probably the latter, so I'd guess it defaulted to that.

Pretty sure you can just make a new mod folder with all the others and it'll find it when you start the game. Just crib a modinfo.json off another one.

Is Tome4 meant to be played on "Heroic" or "Roguelike" mode? Heroic is default but I've heard a lot of people say Roguelike is bad because the game can just be randomly bullshit sometimes. Also is this the right idea for the possessor class? Using bodies as meatshields is a pretty cool gameplay mechanic.

If you git truly gud, and by "gud" I mean "autistic", you can resist even bullshit.
If you're neurotypical like us mortals who don't worship sonic, you will randomly die to boss monsters who activate katana and keep teleporting behind you every turn while dealing huge damage and stunning you every other turn.

Reanimated corpses have already been nerfed a LOT. If memory serves me right, in older versions you had a 1/2 chance of destroying a corpse before it rose back up, and it JUST WOULDN'T DIE. Now you're almost guaranteed to be able to destroy a corpse before it rises back up, and it'll almost never rise up more than once.

They aren't such a big pain in the ass, remember:
-They're always slower than you. Get away and get them out of your sight so you don't go insane.
-Half the classes have molotovs, USE THEM.
-Bait the bastards to brasiers if you can.
-Use your colt. Use your iron spikes. Never engage in melee unless a corpse is near death AND alone AND unarmed.
-And don't underestimate the power of knives (even rocks sometimes, a well placed knife/rock can save you a bullet)
-19.0 just added metal grating and barred gates, which are fantastic for wrecking them at range while they bang at a jammed door

Bloated corpses are way nastier, though, fuck them. Especially when they show up in that already shitty collapsing wall event.

Hey guys, I'm the one who started a channel with DCSS runs (mostly to get an idea of how YouTube works from the content creator side).

I finished my OpAe of Sif Muna 15 rune run last night if anybody is still interested (am uploading the last set of videos now - the rest should be up in an hour or so). I like to think I did an okay job of explaining challenges throughout the entire game - maybe it will help someone git gud. It starts here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMsy-NYl7_0
>>
>>184130340
will you play Rogue?
>>
>>184108783
haven't played your game yet, is it hard? is it like Rogue-Brogue? how much easier than Rogue?
>>
>>184130839
The original? I've never played it but I could. I am into old school stuff, so it wouldn't be out of character for me. I was thinking of doing a little Master of Magic next, though (an ancient dos 4x game, not a roguelike.)

I may also start doing dev streams at some point (I am working on a roguelite game of my own).
>>
>>184130340
>>184131201
I don't know man, watching people play video games instead of playing them myself is really fucking gay imo. My kids love watching Let's Plays! and whatnot but wtf all it makes me do it buy the game and force them to play it so they're not fags.
>>
>>184129289
Zombies were scary at first, but then I remembered to literally walk away. Nowadays I'm more scared of ranged attackers like bloated corpses and spitting cobras early on. And of course being surrounded in a hallway by randomly triggered snakes.

Oh also do the laser guns from the mushroom men pierce armor or something?

Fair viewpoint, but DCSS is a really complicated game. My videos are meant to be less of a traditional "Let's Play" and more of a guide to the various challenges.

For example let's say you usually have a ton of trouble on Vaults:5. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to pull up a vid on it with commentary on the various challenges, so you'd be a little more prepared?

Also, for what it's worth this is not the sort of thing where I mouthbreath, sing to myself, and laugh loudly at my own jokes (I hate this crap when I see it in videos.)

God, exactly. This. Fucking surprise snakes are what have been ruining my best runs lately save for this specific piece of bullshittery (pic related), and that one time seven bloated corpses popped out of a collapsing wall like I implied earlier.

Also, just spitting cobras and ravens in general. Being blinded for multiple turns is the absolute worst status effect, and lone ravens have managed to kill me that way, so now I just mow them down from a distance with extreme prejudice.

you should at least give it a try because it takes 0 time to understand what's happening (unlike Nethack). And it is also the hardest one i've ever played. Brogue's difficulty is 0.28% Rogue's difficulty. (And the rng is controllable, that means it's not bullshit)
Obviously the best game ever existed.
>>
>>184132951
>those fucking superraven birdniggers

>>
>>184130307
>Die to invisble shit that drains your spirit
Those are ghosts/phantasms. They are actually very easygoing and eager to leave you alone as soon as you manage to put even one tile of distance from it. They are always haunting same place and return to it after being lured away. Ghosts and phantasms cannot damage you physicaly, so it is safe to use sacrifice life if you desperately need more spirit. If you are slower than ghost and cannot shake it off then you can do two things. First - pop a smoke grenade. It will hide you and once ghost lose sight of you it will go back to its place. Second - pop a dynamite and place it so ghost will be caught by explosion. Dynamite can harm ghosts.

>Die to animated undead
>>184129289
Also you can just run and close doors as you go. They cannot open even unjammed doors and will have to bash it down which often costs them a lot of time. Version 19 significantly shortened their memory, so now its actually feasible.

>Die to fucking locusts in an iron suit ( what the fuck it was an endless swarm of them )
Locusts breed rapidly and endlessly. So without molotovs or Azathoth wraith its hard to subdue out-of-control swarm. Better just run and close door behind you.

There's a lot of bullshit in this game
>open tomb

I guess you're just not supposed to open tombs. Too bad that doesn't help again the ghosts randomly wandering around
>D1
>A group of animated dead in between you and the whole rest of the map
>You can waste resources getting through them
>Or you can just give up
Should have had better luck, kid.
>Enter room
>Suddenly a few enemies spawn to "ambush" you
No really why the fuck is this even in the game?

Seriously dev your level design and creature design are on point but you really need to work on the placement.
Literally my last run the first room had 3 of those snakes that blind you "ambush" me in the room I spawn in. So of course I run away...into a huge mob of animated dead.
I survived though, but it felt like bullshit considering it was only D2 or D3
>>
>>184150717
I think one more universally accessible OH-SHIT-button would really help the game right now.

Do not hesitate to blow up a few zombies though, even if it's the first floor. You get a good amount of explosives.
>>
>>184150717
Audibly chuckled

What do you mean by "placement" though? Are you talking about when snakes suddenly appear?
>>
>>184151562
>What do you mean by "placement" though?
Early game there shouldn't be axe wielding animated dead and a narrow hallway and the rest of the map ( including the exit )
Change the placement algorithm so that huge squads of animated dead are less likely to spawn in regular areas of the map. Maybe increase their spawn rate behind blue doors in exchange.

>>184151382
Dynamite are a decent oh shit button. If only the timer wasn't so long.
Molotovs are far less good, the shit you want to use it on ( huge groups of undead) it's barely effective on. Sure it can kill the group but half of them will come right back up.
>>
>>184152285
Molotovs are not effective against undead, indeed. I'm pretty sure they are supposed to be used against shit like quick-breeding worms and if you have to destroy multiple corpses quick. Maybe swarms of bats, too.

>>184151562
IADev, can we get Tommy Gun drums to weigh more? Also since the M1911 and M1928 take the same ammo can we interchange the ammo between M1911 mags and M1928 drums? I know there certainly are limitations in place, and I don't expect to see a change by tomorrow or even 19.1, but it would be helpful for the long run. I always run out of M1911 mags and have tommy gun ammo laying around
>>
>>184155518

>all this terrible feedback
Being able to put 1911 bullets into tommy drums would be ridiculously OP.
The issue with the path to the stairs being blocked is more manageable by making more interconnected levels, monsters can always wander into a corridor.
Monsters should keep placing after level gen because it's scary and difficult to deal with.
>>
>>184157063
Couldn't agree more to the last point.

I happen to have listened to the old roguelike radio interview with ia dev recently and back then he said enemies are more likely to spawn, the more of the level is explored. Really hope that is still the case, because it seems perfect for the game.
>>

>Monsters should keep placing after level gen because it's scary and difficult to deal with.

1b
>I finished the level where the fuck did those come from
2

>Where the fuck did this bullshit come from
>*trapped between what you were already running from ( if you had the ability to defeat them you wouldn't be running ) and something else that will slow you down even if you can beat it*
>YOU DIED

Post generation monster spawns are just there to fuck you over with RNG with knowledge you can't possibly have. Adventuring into an unknown are you already know you don't know what is around the corner and prepare accordingly. All back spawns do is fuck you over after you should have been safe. With back spawns you can't even run away from a fight you are losing because you might aggro more things and make the situation worse so what ends up happening is even when you're losing you still fight praying to RNG god instead of running away like you should.

Can they open locked iron chests too?

Haven't tested. But compared to a Hatchet, an equipped, loaded M1911 breaks doors faster when bashing.

First Nethack ascension. Thoroughly spoiled, lots of degenerate behaviour (like pudding farming, throne farming, polypiling the shit out of rocks so I got lots of gems, calling the priest names), no conduct being tracked, but I'm quite happy. The priest gave me two cents for an ale.

Congrats, Nethack is still one of my favorites. Fast paced but not dumbed down. Well except that stupid fucking maze but whatever.

Thanks.

There are lots of things to improve on the game, though.
>Message spam
I felt like pressing Esc for any time too much was going on. It meant losing important messages, but to be honest I don't want to see "oh the giant beetle tried to hit the ant, but it missed" for the 100th time.
>Annoyances
Two things: Rodney and mysterious force. Neither actually bring you some real danger, at the end of the game you're already prepared for this kind of shit. But they keep annoying you over and over and over... like if they tried to extend the late game through repetitiveness. I think the first should be buffed, and the later simply removed.
>Team Ant
Too fast, hitting too hard, in too large of groups for too low levels. I get the game is unfair, but it's a bit too much. (Water Mocassins at least are our fault.)

Still, a solid game. I'm eager to get a "better" ascension, and eventually move to another game.

Final Fantasy Tactics has actual tactics in it, as opposed to "real roguelikes".

In fact there's nothing in your stupid Berlin Interpretation that forbids having a per-tile elevation variable.

no no no that's not what I mean. It sounded so difficult that I was wondering why you were torturing yourself attempting to implement that

finally got him with some really nice gear. (two +20 strength peices so I can max the parry stat and a +%20 bonus damage to bandits piece helped a great deal)

well it starts you off with a school backpack but i dont think there's anything else special about it.

Not really. Like most SRPGs it's grossly imbalanced and makes it easy to trivialize battles through proper character building, so any challenge is self-imposed. Roguelikes are one of the genres I moved on to once I realized SRPGs would never live up to my expectations for them.

Yeah lets pretend IA is not bullshit.
On both sides of these doors are a shit ton of scarabs, at least one snake(already killed) and at least one shadow
Already used cloud mind rod...it didn't work.
Only have dynamite. No more molotovs because of similar bullshit situations necessary to get to the stairs on previous levels.
>>
Earth Elementals can still drink potions off of the floor just fine, thankfully

I had to modify my autopickup file to stop silently and automatically picking up potions though.

I actually managed to make it through with a well placed dynamite
Maybe it was just because the dodge reduction on iron armor was not worth the damage reduction against fucking bugs, because I survived this time.

Heightmaps aren't technically hard. What's the problem?

There a roguelike with similar character variety as Tome4 but that doesn't take hours and hours to play? Finally ran out of lives and while the game was interesting it isn't that fun.

Anytime I think of maps with high ground and games with high-ground being the advantageous position, it reminds me of all those games where high ground was the is all, end all for determining combat success and one man on a hill can destroy enemy tanks repeatedly without dying.
Just a kneejerk reaction on my part, forgive me

Which game did dualwielding shields best?

-Dredmore: Wield two shields while kicking everything to death with your amazing martial arts prowess.
-ADOM: Cower behind two shields because you are afraid of trees.
-PCB: Wield two shields, bash monsters' heads in with both of them while also inflicting near-permanent stun.
