I heard mixed opinions on it. Some classes seemed completely unviable, the art was the main draw while the gameplay was mediocre at best. I'll admit it looks very aesthetic, though. Other than gameplay, the whole costing money thing would probably put most people here off of it.

this entire level is just full of ogres and trolls
aka "tanky melee-only enemy who dies to 2 casts of poison + kiting" and "tankier melee-only enemy with hp regen who dies to 3 casts of poison + kiting"

The ogre mages can cast slow which theoretically would be dangerous but they don't group up with their buddies and their AI never closes to melee range. So they just slow me while standing at the edge of my LOS and letting me zap them to death.

The kill count screen is bugged or something.
I killed dozens of goblins and kobolds and at least half a dozen baby dragons.

Final evaluation: game is waaaay too easy for ranged attackers. I won on literally my second character (first was a melee assassin who died on D:1 while i figured out the controls). I ran into only 2 enemy types that were actually dangerous at range: Kobold wizards, who cast firebolt but have no hp and die to anything, and the Young Vampire I met on D:3 that cast poison spells for 75% of my hp. (But I threw a potion of negation at it to make it permanently lose its spellcasting ability and then I kited it like anything else. )

I'm saying neither that bumping having a place is inherently bad nor that having a skill set is automatically good. I'm just saying that one of the ways for a game to be interesting to me is to have a good skill system, therefore a roguelike that emphasizes skill use is worth checking out at the bare minimum.

>>
>>183734595
I play a lot of T4, Demon, and OWH periodically already. T4 is fun but gets really samey because even though it has a lot of races/classes most of them are superficially different, and have skills/resources that ultimately do the same things. Indielikes generally don't have the replay power of classic roguelikes, but they usually do something that's interesting for a certain period of time.

Press 'e' to see your equipped items.
You start the game with a torch, but you can buy oil lanterns from the general store (the shop with a 1).

You need a light source to see in the dark, which includes some dark places in dungeons plus the surface during nighttime and areas of magical darkness made by enemy spellcasters.
Also for some reason being in tall grass or trees counts as being in darkness.

They have enough HP to withstand two stabs from a +3 dagger, they have a paralyzing attack, they are faster than normal, they terrify, they max out shock in one turn, they can spawn on D:4.
At least 2 of these things need to change, unless you put them deep enough in the dungeon.

The only thing you can do is not have them spawn between you and the stairs.

And yet another issue is that everything they do spams -more- prompts.

I think the dev may as well have put a hunting horror with lower awareness on D:4 for all the interesting situations mind eaters provide.

The IA pasta is so out-dated as to be beyond useless.
We get questions about it all the time, and the best thing to do is to remove it and just have questions in the thread until someone feels like replacing it.

I've come to the conclusion that tangledeep sucks. The gameplay's just super fucking watered-down because stat investments mean so little, skills all have massive arbitrary cooldowns, and classes have almost nothing about them that alters the gameplay flow. Ranges are also tiny and enemies are fast, meaning everything ends up in melee before long. It's also one of those games where you just fight single enemy after single enemy because everything is a massive damage sponge.

What role are you?

Get a magic whistle and let them fuck around on a floor until you want to bring them with you to another floor
The long worm is worthless, let him die or leave it behind
Green dragon is still a dragon, so lots of hp for midgame, but watch out for his breath if you have no reflection or immunity. He's bound to die to the first minotaur you get
Ki-rin is amazing, don't underestimate it. Multiple attacks, high speed under constant haste and flight make it a great bodyguard, and if you can ride it it's the perfect mount

Camp Granada started the kickstarter for DDA four years ago promising fixed NPCs in two months and a fully bug free game in six months. They gave him 25 thousand $$$ to hire a competent coder who when he saw the code just said that he'd have to do everything back from scratch and it'd take a year. He gave himself the status of owner of the project, paid the coder with the money, refused to make a new code base and instead told him yo work with what he had. After a year the bugs were all there with new friends and NPCs hadn't been touched yet, but the kikestarter money had run out and the programmer just said " alright bye". So Kim Jon Kevin decided he'd get people to work for free for his game. All of them were idiots and most of them were innocuous enough, but the occasional programmer did come by and then just gave up soon after , sometimes chased out by kev kev himself. And when you get people who can't code and are obnoxious faggots like KA101 ( who went insane and created words like marksperson not to say MAN, may xe/xir rest in piss).
DDA is the result of horrible decisions and he is the captain that is driving the ship deeper and deeper into the shitstorm.
>>

>>183816323
Not that anon but.

Is not that the code is that bad, is that the code was never intended for zlevels,(same with a lot of other parts of the game). That's why it would need a proper re-work from zero instead of using hacks to make it work like zlevels like Kevin wants.

are you properly abusing conjure flame
stick it in hallways to block weak enemies off while you pewpew them
or stick it between you and big fatties like ogres/hydras. if they have enough hp to not be afraid of entering a cloud, they won't even bother trying to path around it, so you don't actually need corridors to do this

when you have sticky flame you can kill tough melee enemies just by casting it, kiting for its duration, casting again, etc
>>
>>183832813
I typically go for Ru and diversify into melee, but going for sif/vehumet is probably the easier path.

Magic needs a bettter interface tbqh, I can win like 3-4 melee games in the time it takes for me to get to midgame on a mage.

I'm currently trying to win all species and the mage candidates are DE, Ba, Ko, Vp, Mf. I was trying to win BaFE but sticky flame kiting doesn't work as well if you're a slow species.

Is IA dev here? How did you started making roguelikes? Did you make your IA engine from scratch or did you start by modifying something to suit your needs, or followed some tutorial at first and then expanded it? Did you make few practice games/engines before IA? I'm thinking about dabbling something together with Python (as that's what I need in my work so I thought maybe hacking together something small is good practice. I only need to script some software using python and ruby/c like language so I don't need c++ as such).

Almost everything. I like the combination of roguelike and then using the money gained from your roguelike adventures to engage in citybuilding. If I threw in the relationships stuff too I can't imagine it wouldn't sell a lot (and I'd be like the only non-lefty developer for roguelikes - you better believe you could have a harem in my game.)

I'd switch up the actual roguelike mechanics a lot though. While I sort of like the pseudo-pokemon thing they have going on, I think I'd go in a different direction (maybe you build up your items instead between runs, or your magic, etc - or nothing at all).

I'd also make the citybuilding mechanic more in depth. More customizable.

Yo IADev. I can run the precompiled game that you released for 19.0, but I can't run when I build from source.

Someone mentioned that it might be my built-in intel card, but since the release version works, I think it might be a compilation flag issue?

Would that be haram, though? You could do what the guy in the last thread planned on and make your goblins (((merchants))). I don't think meta-progression is halal around these parts, depends on how you do it though. City building could be neat, though. How would you customize the city building? How could you build up your items/magic between runs? NPCs? Merchants with personalities? Followers? How traditional do you want it to be versus how you want to have modern influences is probably the key question here. Then again I'm not a game dev and I only play vidya and can't into coding.

doing some post-orc shopping for my TrMo^Yred and i'm trying to decide between two amulets:

Reflect rElec rC+ Int+2 Dex+3 SH+6
RegenMP rPois rN+ Dex-4 Slay+6

normally slay+6 seems like a no-brainer, but it doesn't offer a lot else, and that other amulet has some very nice all-around benefits

It's actually pretty disappointing that it went that direction, because his original rationale was fine. It was purely just a matter of application. Then again, CDDA's biggest issue has always been that having a dozen people doing their own shit with no real teamwork results in a lot of redundant and useless shit being done. I wouldn't be surprised if working in that kind of scenario for years causes someone's opinions of other devs to sour.

In any case, they should have just add informative messages/warnings based on how much medical skill you have. Someone with a certain level of medical skill will be able to tell how much painkiller is suicidal, as well how much painkiller is enough to complete self-surgery. Someone who doesn't would be guessworking their meds and at a higher risk of killing themselves. The main issue is probably that nobody was making constructive suggestions, it was just someone who wanted to implement an idea and others naming flaws and nobody actually trying to fix anything.
>>
>>183860485
It doesn't fit the lore of the world and it's not a fun mechanic, so no, there's really no merit to the rationale and no need to offer a solution beyond "don't include it".
>>
I got to 5 layers deep in Angband, still have no idea how to exit to world map or scroll manually or anything. At least I'm level 7. Is there an alignment system? Because it seems like there is. I saw something about losing my free will? I'm a human paladin, I wasn't sure what triggered that, maybe just murdering things? Also, what kind of stuff should be in the IA pastebin?
>>
>>183857758
Top easily. Slay+6 Dex-4 is not that appealing on its own whereas the other amulet is quite good.

On the contrary, having an excuse to expand the Medical skill with Knowledge:Medical style features sounds pretty fun.

CBMs are supposed to be kits with everything you need to install the bionic, which is why you never need any separate tools to install them or to stitch up the gigantic holes in your body afterwards
but they've decided now that the kits are actually "everything you need except painkillers"
>>
>>183863354
Yes, I'm playing PCB. I'm in a town with no apparent exit. I might be playing a no wilderness mode by accident. I had no idea that was even an option.
>>
>>183863459
i believe you can see your birth options by pressing something like =B

>>
>>183862616
If they want realism over fun there's no way you should be able to self-install a CBM. There would be no reason for the pre-apocalypse world to design them that way.
>>
>>183863448
Fair enough, but the issue may be that explanation doesn't make an awful lot of sense for the current game state. You can rip complete CBMs directly out of zombies, and no matter how you look at, it efficient design dictates people simply wouldn't be putting entire installation kits into their bodies.

Assuming it's still possible to harvest CBMs directly from corpses anyway, it's been a while. Zombie corpses are particularly questionable as well since that shit can't be sterile.
>>
>>183863962
Needing painkillers for something is not inherently unfun, unless you automatically consider all requirements unfun in which case wizmode already exists. Painkillers are fucking everywhere anyway so it's not like it's even a significant cost if it works intuitively.
>>
How does combat in Angband work? How do they make it so that there can be 1 million++ dungeons without turning all monsters in some dungeon into popcorn after beating a few that are harder? I've heard there's levels or something, do they just bump up the level?
>>
>>183864290
But how is it any more fun? Especially as it's basically irrelevant as anything other than a noob trap to kill yourself with an overdose?
Re-defining requirements in the name of "realism" is simply obnoxious, especially when the result is no more realistic and doesn't actually introduce anything new. Adding local anaesthetics and making them a CBM requirement would have been fine, especially if they had some other uses.
>>
>>183864573
Seconded this, I'd also like to know. I discovered the "m" key, and using my Paladin abilities seemed to go well.
>>
>>183864726
>But how is it any more fun?
How is having to wear clothes, crafting weapons better than your fists, needing ammunition, or needing skills any more fun?
>Especially as it's basically irrelevant as anything other than a noob trap to kill yourself with an overdose?
Dying? In a roguelike? While trying to install generally-gamebreaking endgame character upgrades as a newbie? Oh the humanity.

>Re-defining requirements in the name of "realism" is simply obnoxious
CDDA is an immersive game, realism is inevitably part of immersion. This was going to become an issue the moment they added butcherable CBMs.

Local anesthetics are an option but, as it came up in the faggy dev argument we're talking about right now, it would basically be an entirely new, special-cased mechanic that functions independently from painkillers. It's doable but it just introduces a new set of issues that nobody bothered addressing. Besides, implementing a specific item you need to install CBMs creates more bloat than just making painkiller use for surgery more intuitive. I personally think that occam makes the painkiller solution more preferable to developing and polishing an entirely new class of meds.
>>
>>183864573
Angband only has one dungeon, the eponymous "Angband."
>>
>>183865537
CDDA is not a roguelike and instadeath is generally a bad thing, especially out of combat.

It doesn't seem like a good mechanic to have in CDDA.
>>
>>183865537
Unless CDDA is going the super serious pr0skillz roguelike. Having insta death mechanics is a bad thing and isn't fun.

And if you want realism that bad, add anesthetics, it's not like one item will 'bloat' the game even more. Anything is better than noob traps.
>>
>>183865663
>CDDA is not a roguelike
Then why are we talking about it right now?
>instadeath is generally a bad thing, especially out of combat.
That's why I think medical skill should also play a role in informing the player of doing shit related to drugs, basically serving as a D&D knowledge skill. Overdose is a threat regardless of if you're using CBMs, after all. If your character is popping a bunch of codeine with no pharmaceutical knowledge then frankly he deserves what happens to him, it's when medical skill doesn't guard against that happening that it becomes purely a meta knowledge issue rather than a game knowledge issue.

Hell, they could even put new CBMs into boxes together with readable instruction manuals, which tell you exactly how much medicine to use and how long to wait.
>>
>>183865982
See, now you're just making opinions about the game's scope. Insta death is something that has existed in DDA long before this even came up.
>>
>>183865548

>>
>>183865537
>How is [stuff] any more fun?
More options and stuff to do is fun. Merely adding an extra hurdle - which we've already concluded is barely relevant once you understand it - is not.
>Dying? In a roguelike?
Yes, silly "gotcha" deaths like this are a staple of the genre. That doesn't make them good design. It's also all the more obnoxious the longer a game lasts.
>Local anesthetics [...] would basically be an entirely new, special-cased mechanic
Or just an extra item you need to install a CBM, possibly with some extra effects. Which should probably be a generic CBM installation kit rather than just anaesthetic, but whatever.

>some point along DDA's casualization process they make it possible to butcher CBMs directly from shocker zombies (lolwut) fully usable like new CBMs
>Lead dev finally finds this unrealistic after months (years?), instead of changing the ability to butcher the CBMs from corpses he makes ALL CBMs into invasive surgery that require an undisclosed amount of painkillers to work
>idiots who somehow still didn't know painkillers have a delayed effect after all this time (since Whales cata) apparently suicide ingame en masse
>somehow specifically the fact that idiots are killing themselves with painkillers is the thing that people take the most issue with

tl;dr Everyone involved is a massive fucking faggot holy shit.
>>
>>183867745
Oh, and the devs themselves got into an autistic argument about it on the git which somehow found its way over here.

A lot of the monsters *are* popcorn, really.

And you don't really fully clear levels in *Bands. For a lot of dungeons you will probably get yourself a staff of mapping or of stair detection and dive down fast rather than trying to explore every level.
>>
>>183868294
Seems like this would work a lot better

I was fine with the idea of butchered bionics being dangerous to install, but the idea that these supposedly futuristic, over-the-counter DIY bionic kits require a horrendous amount of painkillers to use is bizarre. If nothing else, I don't think it's a very good idea to perform literal brain surgery on yourself while hopped up on tramadol, for example.

It made a lot more sense when they were automated, self-contained kits that did all the dangerous work for you, provided you were smart enough to set them up properly.

Pros:
Fun to see saunas blow up
Low tedium (hahaha)
Ok skills for antisustains/effects
Massive healing and dirext healing interaction
Ok immunities
Cons:
Healing is meaningless on difficulties above nightmare
Anti effects is trash
No real centered damage so no good damage above normal/nm
Proc based so DR/retard resist rapes you
Multi instance damage
No reason to go anything but dual mindand AM
No actives makes it v. Tedious funnily enough.
No saunas/adjacent enemies means NO damage.

This DESU, CBMs should be easy to install by any non-retarded character (albeit slowly; probably faster for someone with skills in first aid/electronics).
Hacked-off bionics from random zombies should be difficult to install, and they should be dangerous unless specific precautions are taken (however, I don't think painkillers are the solution).

Not turn-based, not designed to adhere to all the rules of a game from the 90s, not a roguelike. Almost entirely dependent on getting good gun drops, too, but that's been eased a bit. No? My guy can't figure out how to not burn himself while working near an open flame? And then when he catches fire, he can't pat it out, or dump his water skin on himself? He's just gonna run around in circles until he dies? How has he lived this long?

well it'd be frowned upon in THIS thread for being completely off topic

Want to add a complex ID system that makes you have to experiment with items to determine their properties rather than scroll of ID, want to make certain books in certain languages, want to make conflict avoidable with monsters if you persuade them, etc

Not entirely sure how to implement a dialogue system when more than 3 or 4 monsters are on screen. It would spam the output if you can hear all if them talking. It won't be too hard to fix this though.
>>
>>183911630
How are you getting INT and DEX from a trove?
>>
>>183912003
What could you gain from reading those books, or from conversing with monsters? How would you experiment with items? Would there be crafting stations or whatnot you could experiment with?
>>
>>183912151
its an artefact dumbass
>>
>>183912237
Atmosphere is added for one, but also you'd be able to learn spells and tricks unique to certain races from monsters. Will also gain a strategic advatage, can recruit them to fight with you or guide you (would work as a MAP scroll sort of).

Item experimentation: let's say an item is anti-magic or something, dipping it in a magic potion could cancel the magic out. You could be fighting with a sword and find out it randomly ignites when used a certain number of times, lots of little secrets and cool stuff to discover. Not entirely unique, but I'd expand the ID system to be much more subtle and meaningful.

Working as intended. :^)

But yeah, it's really easy to set yourself on fire. A fire will randomly spread to tiles around it, and there's no warning for this. If you're doing a long action, ie. using a fire to cook or to warm yourself up, the first warning you get is when you start taking damage, by which point it's usually too late.
I made a bug report of it once, but it didn't get a lot of traction. Apparently, fire is too powerful compared to battery-fueled hotplates, and needs to be balanced by making it a bitch to use.
As a workaround, make a brazier. If you have a screwdriver and a hammer, you can dismantle an oven or a locker for the sheet metal.
>>
>>183912003
>Not entirely sure how to implement a dialogue system when more than 3 or 4 monsters are on screen.
Dwarf Fortress does that. It's not really a good system right now, but you should check it out if you want to implement something similar yourself.

Everybody does this eventually.

During the day you can just stand back so it won't reach you. At night I like to light flowers on fire since they don't seem to spread.

In theory waiting with . is supposed to help when you're on fire. This is basically useless against flame-shooting monsters because they'll just set you on fire again while you're doing nothing, but maybe it helps against bush idiocy.
>>
>>183912872
Main worry reading that is a simple system would probably be lame and get boring quickly, whereas a complex one would be a Byzantine mess of special cases.
Consider: how many possible properties can a sword have such that identifying it is relevant, non-trivial, and not a total pain in the arse?
A good implementation could be amazing. But I think it'll be hard to find that sweet spot.

As the other guy said, it's because the fire spread. Nothing to do with cooking skill. Which isn't to say that it's not retarded. At least you didn't do it indoors, burning all your shit and bringing the building crashing on top of you.

PCB monster damage isn't like DCSS monster damage. In DCSS, your consumables are like gasoline - you use it and it's gone. In PCB, consumables are like rechargable batteries - you can use them all, but over time they'll be back either by recharging or by accumulation through gameplay.

What this means is that many more PCB monsters will tax your rechargable consumables - a high-level monster like an ancient lich in DCSS isn't too much of a threat if you're maxed out on a weapon skill and levels, but in Angband a high level monster like a starspawn of Cthulhu will totally fuck your shit unless you use your rechargable consumables liberally. Add onto this the possibility of packs/vaults of high level enemies, along with uniques that are even more dangerous, and a PCB character -must- use consumables to survive, whereas a DCSS character only needs to use them in emergencies.

The level of a dungeon is a guideline for danger, but it's not the rule. A level 60 dungeon might happen to be safer than a level 50 dungeon with a vault. But the loot in a level 60 dungeon is also more likely to be of better quality than a level 50 dungeon, so there's incentive to dive deep.

>>183930769
PCB tiles are super shitty, but they exist.

To return to town you need a scroll of word of recall, and later on you can get a rod of recall. It's the precursor to the idea of town portals in Diablo.
>>
>>183930769
>How do I return to town from a dungeon?
Scroll of Word of Recall. It will remember your last depth, so if you read another Word of Recall in the town, you'll return to that depth.

>Also, does it have tiles?
Yes, I think there are a few fan-submitted ones. They can be selected in the options menu, or something like that.
>>
>>183930769
scrolls of Word of Recall will teleport you (after a dcss-style delay) bewteeen the surface and the lowest dungeon level you've been to

I'm still not clear on the differences between Angband and PCB, but I know that PCB is sort of an combination of all the features from variants and vanilla that were deemed good. I think. PCB died after the last DCSS tournament started, now DCSS is mostly dead, too. We've got IA Dev to thank for IA posting, though.

Angband:
>Has one dungeon (which is Angband, unsurprisingly)
>Has a few classes: Warrior, Mage, Priest, Rogue, Ranger, Paladin
>Has a few standard fantasy races: Human, Half-elf, Elf, Hobbit, Gnome, Dwarf, Half-Orc, Half-Troll, Dunadan, High-Elf, Kobold
>Is reasonably balanced and non-grindy
PCB
>Has an entire overworld filled with a dozen or so different dungeons.
>Has 50+ classes including things like ninjas, wand-eaters, dragon-riding warlocks, snipers, blue-mages who learn spells from monsters, psions...
>Has a similar number of races including demigods, half-dragons, mindflayers, ents, zombies...
>Also has the ability to play as "monster races". Instead of being a humanoid with a class you can play as a dragon, a centipede, a hydra, or a fire vortex.
>Is much more difficult than vanilla angband
>Also grindier and less balanced.
>>
>>183932192
Angband and PCB feel fundamentally similar (after all, PCB is an Angband variant - but it's gone through a lineage of several variants, and amalgamated stuff together, like you said).

PCB, however, simply has a ridiculous amount of variety in races, classes, spells (and related mechanics, and items - plus it has an overworld and quests (vanilla Angband doesn't have these).

Vanilla Angband still tries to be somewhat cohesive and balanced, but PCB throws all of that out the window. It's part of what makes PBC wonderful.
>>
IAdev when do we get to see ShubNiggy Diggy? Or are multitiled enemies not possible to make?
>>
>>183933059
How do you not eventually just become so overpowered you 1-hit kill everything in PCB? Seems like there's such a large overworld that afte a few dungeons you would be able to take less hard dungeons without a challenge. Do the monsters level up as you do?
>>
>>183933384
You don't have to clear all the dungeons in a row, but even so there is mostly a power progression. Stronghold goes from level 0 to 15, while the Orc Caves go from 15 to... 23? 28? something like that, etc etc.

But yes a lot of the time you will skip past weaker dungeons. Often I skip right past Camelot and the Forest and come back way later just to dive to the bottom and kill the boss.
>>
>>183933384
No, you go to deeper levels in more dangerous dungeons as you level up.
>>
>>183933692
I don't know why anyone would want to tackle the Forest at a roughly level-appropriate time. That dungeon's awful.

>>
>>183939147
Good shit, anon.
>>
>>183940794
Yeah, the stuff with warning boxes is a bit of a crapshoot. Can be trivial, can be quite capable of kicking your shit in, especially if you don't have a lot of options available to you (disables and the like).

Unknown Tunnels are a random spawn (once per game) when you wander near mountains at the appropriate level range. If you save the guy at the end, you eventually get the ability to buy randarts for a pile of cash.

I usually did Old Forest first for the T2s, but it and the zone it leads into can be annoying if you're new. Maze is pretty straightforward and full of delicious golden chests (spawn some harder mobs, but can drop up to end-game stuff), unless you get the alternate version.

When you get back on to the world map, try to find the town of Last Hope (or Zigur if you don't have any spell abilities). Shopkeepers there can sell up to tier 3 equipment, including infusions, which can carry you a long way if they happen to have something good. IIRC bulwarks mostly bash shit with their shields, and those can get some nice flat elemental damage on hit.
>>
>>183942346
Thanks. I was in Zigur already and got a daunting level feeling warning, so I turnt 360 degrees. I'll check if I'm kosher and visit again.

I don't even play tome. I'm just a guy who's thinking about developing a game, and I'd rather not get shit on by jobless neets for asking to be compensated for my work.

Then again this type of shit is why I'd never release a free game. Apparently asking for donations makes you a shithead. Is it a little obnoxious? Yeah. Could it be more subtle? Sure. But to complain about it in a *free* game makes you as much of a faggot if not moreso.

The best way to do it would be to leave it out of the game entirely and instead put it on your website -- or put it in the ending credits, or in a startup splash screen. you probably went into the beginner mode instead of normal (fewer class and race options)

The GHB is the Hell-Beast unique and also mostly harmless (though sometimes its digging or blocking can get you killed). Much scarier are the nonunique Lesser Hell-Beasts.

Ctrl-hjklyubn also tries to tunnel (in addition to ctrl t as anon suggested). Also, to attack the tile without trying to step into it, VERY useful for fighting when confused so you don't walk when you attack an empty tile in your confusion.

0 then numbers then a command repeats that command equal to the number of times you wrote. Very nice for better-than-run-command tacticool exploration e.g. you want to just go 6 tiles across the room and not press h 6 times just type 06h. Running across rooms or along unexpectedly long hallways etc by default is actually going to get you killed sometimes too, so being lazy by using 0 as actual repeat command instead of shift run command being your ghetto repeat is also safer.

[ and ] bring up monster and item lists. I think @ enters the macro-and-keymap binding menu, which is very useful e.g. setting tab to some handy macro like target closest by macroing tab to *.

Read the help files on item inscriptions e.g. @f0 will fire something with it selectable as 0.

TB BK is great yeah. Could also go for a high elf ninja, a balrog warrior, maybe an android chaos-knight for trolol purposes (androids don't use xp, they level by wearing high items, so they level up in chunks as you get item drops).

>>183953616 What's the class/race play like?
the race is op as fuck, it does extra damage per blow but gets a penalty to num blows. Lategame you can hope to stick on tons of +blows from items and get ridiculous melee damage with any class. Blood knight is great at hitting things and gets more blows the lower its hp and worse its cut status get, letting you really abuse the tonberry acc and damage boosts multiplicatively.

Tonberry Monk of Nature is somewhat ridiculous. Tonberry +damage/-blows and -speed synergizes well with monk +blows and +speed, plus nature gives you a bunch of really useful spells, like a big heal, mapping/detection, and a LoS blocking forest creation.

Balrog warrior is probably the most straightforward option and hits really hard. Balrog weaponmaster (swords) is also good, but trades raw power for your choice of weapon branding.

Perhaps, you have noticed that Phantoms move erratically, just like bats! And if you have a ring they become exactly bats! And how do you fight bats?
Let's see here: when you fight a bat it's basically the same as when you fight a normal monster until bat sidesteps around due to its "confusion". Anyway, you have a free attack anytime it does that. But after that there are two cases(first may happen in a room and in a hallway only second occurs): 1) it sidesteps right next to you, so it's like your combat starts again with your first attack. 2) it falls backwards and you can wait for it to come back, this is also counts as if you've started a combat again with your first-attack; another option is that you can chase it and thus get hit back, losing previous free-attack bonus(why would anyone do that?)
so with this simple reasoning we see that: 1) it doesn't matter where to fight bat: in a room or in a corridor and 2) its sidesteps mean nothing but a free-attack for you.
Also you may kite them and shoot from distance(bats and phantoms are the only enemies that you can kite not only in melee but also in ranged combat).
So, same reasoning applies to a phantom fight with ring.
>>
>>183980216
But lets suppose you don't have a ring(though it's quite common). What now? First of all, where to fight it: in room or in a corridor(hallway)?
Now as we have reasoned, it doesn't matter as long as you can "see" it.
However, with phantom being invisible it might be quite a nuissance to keep track of him in an open space, so it's better to fight him in a hallway.
Now, just one thing remained. How to neglect its negative side of erratical movement while fighting in a hallway? Just drop some stuff beneath, once he steps on it you will see it.
So, without rings fight looks just like this: you lure him into a hallway, drop some item underneath you, move one tile away from it, *)wait, lose an item from sight->this means its standing on it->fight it like a normal monster, until it dies or you receive no counter-attack, go to the step *)

How hard is it to add extra recipes and stuff to DDA? I know there's a mod tool for it floating around somewhere but I've never tried using it.
There's a lot of items like this that I think sound really fun but my non-renewable-resource autism kicks in and won't let me use them because crafting them takes stuff I can't manufacture myself, so I was thinking about adding some more alternate recipes for them.

roguelike games are bad. the roguelike genre is the modern day equivalent of game devs making their NES games bullshit hard so that people didn’t beat them in two hours. its pure laziness. they don’t want to spend time designing actual levels or creating long-lasting game content, so instead they rely on random generation and bullshit difficulty to artificially extend their games.

if you see the word “roguelike” on a game you should assume that means “we only made one hour’s worth of content for our game so we cranked up the difficulty so that nobody could beat it.”

This has crossed my mind as well, and would certainly be cool.

I'm excited for that and Derek Yu's new game, which he teased here https://twitter.com/mossmouth/status/890269909615235072 There's a few other game that use the #UFO50 and they could all be a part of the same game or Derek Yu is collaborating with other devs. Either way, Spelunky is one of my favorite games and I look forward to whatever he does next.

>What're you trying to squeeze in for this version?
The biggest thing is to change the spell skill percentage system into basic/expert/master ranks.

You increase in ranks by picking traits such as "Lesser Invocation" or "Greater Invocation" (these in particular will let you cast attack spells at expert or master rank, respectively). Other classes than Occultist can only ever cast at basic rank.

Three distinct steps like this is much easier to balance right, and I think it's much more fun to go from casting a spell at basic level to expert level (with very distinct and tangible effects), rather than going from 35% to 45%, with like 1 extra damage or whatever.

I''m doing lots of spell updates overall, like making sure that spells are more useful and scale better to higher levels - for example that Darkbolt is actually a feasible combat spell after the early game.

Also adding a couple of new spells, and moving things around a bit (a few of the potions are spells now for example).

Other than that... there was a bunch of smaller changes and fixes. As always, you can see the progress here:

I finished the roguelike python tutorial on roguebasin and I think it's inadequate.
Like some of the instructions are clearly designed in such a way so they can be developed further. That's good. But it doesn't do this nearly often enough. For example the creature AI is so basic you basically have to rewrite it for it to function ( by default creatures only do anything if they are in the players field of vision? Really, what roguelike is that simplistic? )
Where are the instructions on how to have a smaller viewport that follows the player and not display the whole map all the time?
Why include a mouseclick selection but not the far more vital tile examination/selection like DCSS has?
Why include shit like the fireball scroll where visual ques are VITAL to ensure the player doesn't splat themselves, but not give any help on displaying the visual ques necessary?
Basically just trying to implement the basic features something like DCSS has is difficult from the tutorial to the point that I feel like I would be better off starting from scratch now that I have an idea of what needs to be done in what way.

What's a better tutorial? The tutorial gave me a decent enough grasp on python to rig up additional features that I wanted despite very little programming knowledge to it's credit though.

Question about demon ghosts, does it always default to a certain kind of ghost or are they not real player ghosts? It seems like 80% of the time I find a player ghost it's a Heart or a Hand, but I think they must be real players since the one I just ran into had a logical setup of Pyre Rite+Ignite. Is the Heart just really popular?
>>
>>184017519
Do you actually use some kind of rules from other 'real' rpgs such as Rolemaster or something? Would probably help a lot with spell system if you manage to spy some of their tables and such so you don't need to invent the wheel from scratch. Or just to get the idea/inspiration.

>>
>>184018138
>Do you even have room to pick any other traits as an Occultist then?
I definitely think so, unless you go for master in almost every spell domain.

Depending on your strategy, I imagine that you'd master a couple of domains, and maybe go for expert in a few others. There's two traits per domain, so for example if you master three domains then you have six trait choices left to distribute elsewhere (assuming you reach max level).

I think the problem is rather the opposite; currently there aren't enough spell casting traits. The majority of picks for an Occultist should be related to developing spells, not stuff like Tough or Dexterous.

I did for a bit. But in my opinion these rules don't translate well to computer games.

It's not the same when you can't see the dice land on the table. In a pen and paper RPG, if you fail something 10 times in a row, you go "wow, holy shit this is insane!" - whereas in a computer game you think "this game is obviously broken, I'm not playing this anymore".

Hey IA dev, is it normal for audio tracks randomly triggered during the game to overlap? And are they supposed to not stop once the death/game over music plays?

Also, gameplay/quality-of-life question. Since the game displays an "are you sure? y/n" prompt when attacking with a gun in melee. Would you consider adding a similar prompt for stepping into a fire tile without rFire, since this is a delayed certain death to most characters? (And also possibly for stepping onto a trap, maybe with an option to trigger the trap on purpose. Like Shift+T.)
>>
>>184026439
What are you adding? I'm just curious.
>>
>>184019392
In order to make a game you have to do some of the programming yourself. You can't expect the tutorial to do everything for you.
>>
>>184027708
>is it normal for audio tracks randomly triggered during the game to overlap?
Yeah it can happen. I think it sounds pretty cool sometimes, like the combination creates a whole new ambient sound effect.

>And are they supposed to not stop once the death/game over music plays?
No. This is just another minor issue which I haven't had time to address.

One thing that CDDA is missing is a teleport gate. Or something like that. When I'm in the late game i want to go on long range scavenger hunts to find some rare items and such. However taking the stuff back to cleared areas and than unloading it bit by bit from a vehicle is EXTREMELY boring. They should add some sort of construction which allows me to jump back to certain location. Add some cooldown to it after use. Like 2-3 minutes needed to teleport so it can't be used as panic button.

I think that Cata shouldn't be classified as a roguelike. It is more of exploration\survival game with roguelike mechanics. There is no end goal at all in cata. And situations in which you do classic roguelike stuff like thinking about(what should i do to avoid splatting here) are kind of rare. Most of a time you are looting, crafting, hauling, building. Fighting is only a one, not the most important component of the game. And often you just clear weak Zeds situations in which you are in a pinch and you need to be careful about your actions are sparse.

the berlin interpretation has literally been used to defend calling those games a roguelikes
it is shit
it's weirdly specific about shit that doesnt matter and too lenient about shit that does matter

rlg has a better definition in its pasta:
>However, the broad nature of the Berlin Interpretation allows many games not traditionally considered to be roguelikes to be categorized as such, so stricter definitions of what qualifies as a roguelike have been adopted by various communities. Currently, one of the most accepted interpretations on /vg/ is that a game is a roguelike if and only if it has these 4 elements:

>Permadeath - Might be optional or have ways to cheat (eg. Wizard mode), but it has to be a core element of the game.
>Turn Based - Roguelikes are about thinking, not about quick reflexes.
>Grid Based - Everything happens in a grid, where every element of the game use a set space, usually one tile, although some games have multi-tiled monsters or structures.
>Randomly generated content - Since (perma)death is so common in roguelikes, every new game has to be different to keep the gameplay from becoming repetitive.

Making turn-based a mandatory qualifier for a roguelike is a shit meme. There are plenty games that are turn and grid based that aren't roguelikes, and there happen to be very little amounts of real-time roguelikes however there's no causality relation between that and "real-time can't be a roguelike."

Also every roguelite is disqualified from being a roguelike already by other factors too. If anything, turn-basedness should only be absolute if there's a conditional of "a non turn-based game can never be a roguelike if it isn't free."

How do you even hope to win without using potions, what class are you?

PCB monster races don't get classes
i think earth elementals get a self-healing power later on
plus they can walk through walls so you can just hide in rock and jerk off a staff of cure wounds whenever you need hp

Oh its a monster race
Hope they got good powers lategame or J is gonna rape you

Earth elementals are strong as hell early on but I have no idea how you would actually kill the serpent, he can dig through rocks, drain your wands so you can't heal, and can't really feasibly be meleed to death. Probably need tons of rockets.

is the old "ignore all your class-specific shit and just use wand of rockets" still a viable strategy for every character with nonshit device skill
i think those were nerfed in 6.1.0 but i havent played much so i dont know how significant it was
