You used to only be able to use wooden stair blocks to go up now, not only can I place blocks that go up along a wall, but boku is able to go up 1 space up as long as a tile is up there so it doesn't always need to be wooden stairs.

Why do you need indie games to be AAA? Shut up. Too insecure about being an indie dev? Don't make a game, and go away.

Do you want someone to tell you you failed because you were 1MA? There's no way for us to know that. It's far more likely that you just aren't gifted or skilled or disciplined enough to make a simple game, which is a very fulfilling experience that you'll never have because being indie makes your penis feel small.

I decided I'll distribute my engine's code as part of the game when it ships. From what I see there are two options:
1) Distribute the full source with the binaries, with a clause asking not to distribute them before a specific time has passed. This is what the handmade hero vaporware is doing, I think it'd work because those who have the knowledge to build such a project would probably not be the typical pirate scum.
2) Only give the engine and not the game specific code (I plan to reuse it for other kinds of games, so far it's been quite robust when tried with several types). Maybe do like id and distribute full source a few years later.
>>
This is a pretty retarded question, but babby's first game (basically a mario clone, 2d platformer) so I'm trying to figure this out; am I supposed to have a box collider for each tile on the ground? Will having a figurative billion (couple hundred probably?) 2D box colliders impact the game's performance any? Tutorials I've seen so far just have the guy taking one tile and stretching it to make the floor.
This is Unity, if it matters any

Do people gave a fuck about the new game of Pixel?

He's remembered by Cave story, he though he could make it as a 1MA.

But he was famous because his game was the first.

But now, his games are simply another pixelshit platformer.

Most of the public will see AAA games and then will, because they WILL, compare your indie shit with games made by AAA companies.

Do anyone outside indiedevs care about indie games made by 1MA?

Have you seen them at the E3?

No.

I want to say nothing because there are plenty of engines out there that are subpar too but I don't see why that'd prevent them from being distributed. However mine builds very fast and the source is very clear and hackable for games that use 2D foregrounds with 3D backgrounds.

It's the least efficient way to deal with bitmasking, it's essentially link below, but with the diagonal values added aswell, and then they had to be mapped to a tileset I already had, so I just spaghettied it manually.

It's actually suppa simple:
1- Take this sprite (Each 12x12 square is one sub-image)
2- Center the origin (6x6)
3- Create an object with that sprite as its sprite index
4- Put this on its draw event:
for(var i=0; i<image_number; i++) {
draw_sprite_ext(sprite_index, i, x, y-(0.5*i), image_xscale, image_yscale, image_angle, image_blend, image_alpha);
}
image_angle += 1.4;

>Is 3D really worth it?
Preparing 3D assets is more complex and time consuming than creating 2D assets. But 3D assets are much more flexible than 2D. Meaning that once you do have those 3D assets, you can do a lot more with them than you can with 2D ones.

So yeah, I'd say its worth it.

If their /agdg/ were as popular they would have shitposting too. Maybe they would have dedicated mods to ban those shitposters, but a strict moderation isn't what I want from an anonymous board, I want peoples unfiltered opinions on my game and gamedev topics in general.

People don't seem to realize there is actually a lot of progress posted here. They just ignore it and decide to shitpost about shitposters instead of posting their own progress. It's a retarded cycle.

Just post progress or gamedev related things instead of contributing to nonsense posts.

>>

They switched to 3D because it was the current year.
>>
>>183945381
3d may scale better for large teams, but for 1mas and small indies, 2d is simpler and cheaper. 2d has the advantage of translating directly from photoshop to your engine, without worrying about rigging, texturing, etc.

Spore would've been great if they'd taken all the resources they invested in the rest of the game and focused it on making the creature stage good. It was already the second-most robust stage despite being largely devoid of content, and it was the primary selling point of the game.

Late to the party but 36y old here.

While I agree with the guy about all of the 1MA popular games being mediocre as well, it's an amateur game dev general.
If you people want to go that way then do it, it's your life. Just don't raise your expectations too high unless you feel really lucky.

Minecraft just knew how to perfect marketing the normies.

You can if you design 2D like you do for 3D (eg piecewise meshing) and not just some sort of tilemap like it's usual. That would be like pretending you can't have complex lightning in 3D because you're only using cubes.

Finally started working out how some stats will affect attacks. Three stats affect attacks, being agility, strength, and dexterity. While agility will always have the same speed modifier on all attacks, it will be different for strength and dexterity, depending on the attack/weapon. Like the modifier for strength will be much higher for a great sword, where as the modifier for dexterity will be higher for a rapier. All attacks and weapons can go up to double speed, but in order to do this, you must max out those three stats, no matter the weapon, though the gains could be miniscule for dex for say that great sword mentioned earlier. With this gif we're just punching. The number above the player is the agility, which as you can see changes the speed of the attack.

Nobody cares about your opinion. People liked the game because it was fun, original, and dirt cheap, not because it had poop jokes.
>>
>>183954624
If you're using GMS2 already, you should be using it for 2D and not 3D, if that's what you're asking.

3D is still a janky tacked on thing and you're better off using Unity or whatever.
>>

NO engine is best suited for something as vague as the amount of graphical dimensions, if you asked specifically about platformers or VNs for example then you could narrow down your choices a bit more.
>>
>>183955327
Now that you mention it even 2D PBR would be at worst the exact same than in 3D since as you mention you don't have to take the shape into account. So the point is I don't get how you can consider it more "awkward" (maybe we don't refer to the same thing by awkward?). But at least >>183954849 made me kek.

>>183955896
>How could the computer know the imaginary geometry of that flat image without you just telling it?
The same way it does for 3D. You refer to geometry the object's boundary. Lightning in 2D is done by acting on the object's boundary too, it's not a square image, it's its content that matters. Its 1D boundary won't be perfectly flat unless you have something polyhedral, but that goes for 3D too.

Yes that is what I was saying.

RPG Maker makes more sense for if you want to make a very specific type of RPG... and even then it's got some annoying limitations (which can supposedly be handled with scripts but people always make it sound hard. Maybe they're just bad at coding because they're using RPG Maker if the first place).

You can jump, too, but you need to find an upgrade. It's super clunky because the movement is grid-based.
I think all of LISA's mechanics, including the side-scrolling, were created using scripts written by other people, which is why it's a clunky mess. Dingaling isn't actually a very good game designer.

The most recent version of RPG Maker exposes most of the code governing gameplay in Javascript, so you can rewrite it if you want to, but it's totally uncommented so I gave up on trying to understand it and moved on to engines that don't suck.

What's the best way to add an "enchantation" glow to a pixelated sprite in Unity without having to make 5 different sprites for the same item?

I'm thinking about making a regular sprite, then a fully white, bigger version of the same sprite, and coloring the latter according to the enchant, or making it 0 alpha if there's none.

Anyone suggest a good program for designing UI layouts? Like loading in graphics as individual assets and moving them around or swapping them easily and that you can than get each assets coordinates?

All the other sojourns into other game's territory have been in order to find some way to make money while continuously working on Anubis. Things got complicated on the other two things, so doing a Patreon-funded level-by-level Zelda II eroge instead.

If you make an effort to dissect these sorts of propaganda images you will start to notice that there are two attributes that will never ever feature in them.
1) A straight white male. Usually white males are completely excluded, but if they are there then they will inevitably be gay or have a disability of some sort or in this case, gay AND disabled.
2) Any sort of representation of normal masculinity. You will never see one of these sorts of characters will a muscular build, non-effeminate body language or masculine facial features.

I wonder why that is?
ALSO

Does godot have a decent amount of documentation and tutorials now? I had a crack at it probably a year ago, but I'm too shit at programming to decipher their propriety language without handholding.

The '# world' categorization system is a hold over from the USSR/PRC days when capitalism and commies were jostling for influence.
1st world = Influential capitalist nations in America and Europe.
2nd world = Commie nations.
3rd world = Non aligned nations with no significant influence in the commie/capitalist feud.

These days the groups are broken down into a new system
Core/developed nations = Rich capitalist countries e.g. US, EU, Russia.
Secondary or developing nations = Somewhat influential nations that are gaining wealth and power on their way to core nation status e.g. China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia etc.
Periphery nations = Shit nations that are poor, irrelevant, undeveloped and stagnating compared to secondary nations e.g. Most of Africa and South America.

literally you need to transmit the message of the game, this isn´t talk about the real mechanics of your game...
why the bunny fly? Is the rabbit fly in game? early game?
do you use the color palette of your game? or just put random colors in it?
try to investigate how design better... maybe you can find some books about the psychological way of making publicity
because this can´t transmit any emotion (is really important for real merchandising)
If you can´t do this, pay for it (a good graphic designer, a real work-studyholic)
protips:
>you need comunicate the dinamic view of the game
>you need the palett color of it
>you need impress with it
>try with color theory..
>never, really NEVER make your logo like this, are the original logo diagonal?
>or worst: are negative diagonal direction? you need respect your own brand...

Sup /agdg/; I'm thinking I'm going to take a crack at building some test assets for gaem tomorrow (if I don't end up spending the whole day on teapots) and I wanted opinions on what kind of proportions may be best for an action RPG game.

I'm going to try and stick with relatively low-poly designs with some texture trickery to make things look good, but I vomited up a few sketches of the same character so I could get some input.

Game is going to be pretty animu, so I'm leaning towards the center proportions, but I can make assets faster and simpler if I go for something like on the left (think a little like Tales of Symphonia levels of SD; not Bravely Default munchkins).

Of course, going taller is also an option, see right. Obviously it'll take more than a few shitty doodles to get it right, but I'm confident with enough time and effort I can make any of these look good enough

Not everyone is going to be a busty catgirl if that's a concern though I'm sure I could be convinced to add another if demand were significant.

I thought I'd share some brief progress on the HTML recap stuff. Conversion of the recap theme to responsive HTML/CSS is pretty much done, and the generator for it is fully functional. Just need to do a few more tweaks, get a domain and hosting figured out, then I can start testing out basic web recaps and go from there. Most likely starting first week of August.

I understand programmer art. Like if you have an unshaded 3D sphere representing an enemy I'm not dumb enough to believe that's the final product.

But I routinely see people making a conscious aesthetic choice to make their game ugly, with blocky NES/Gameboy style sprites, etc. There is zero excuse for that imo. Nostalgia for designs past their sell-by date is itself past its sell-by date. It leads me to think that many people in this thread aren't really making games to be played and enjoyed by real people, but rather game-shaped programs whose value is derived from how well they mimic something that people once wanted to play long, long ago (when there were no other options.)

If you're doing this as a learning exercise that's fine, but if not, you need to understand that nobody will want to run your ugly game-shaped program.

running speeds.gif
1MB, 732x536px
Have some late night progress. Using the agility stat, I changed the way movement speed works. For all players, no matter their agility, their max walking/jogging speed (when the stick is at full tilt and without the sprint button held) is two pixels per game tick, and there are 30 in a second, so that would be 60 pixels per second. I think of one 16 by 16 pixel tile as one square meter, so that means they're moving at 3.75 meters per second, or 8.3 miles per hour. That's a pretty good jog speed, and it uses no stamina. In game it feels a tad on the slow side. The way I use agility is as follows: If your agility is 0, the speed modifier when sprinting will be 1.5, meaning 2*1.5=3 pixels per game tick, or 5.625 meters per second. The equation is sprintmodifier = 1.5+(agility*0.02). At an agility of 10, you'd move 3.4 pixels per game tick, which is 6.375 meters per second. If you had max agility at 100, you'd go 7 pixels per tick, which is 13.125 meters per second, or 29.3 miles per hour, which is roughly 2 miles per hour faster than Usain Bolt's record running speed. I was trying to strike a balance between feeling good to control (as in not too slow) and a somewhat realistic idea of peak performance human running. In the gif, you see me alternating between agility 10 and agility 100.
>>
>>183984484

Have some last progress before I sleep. Did some simple stuff using the endurance stat. Right now the only thing it effects is how much stamina you have. MaxStamina = 100+(endurance*4), so if your endurance is 0, you'll have 100 stamina, and if your endurance is 100, you'll have 500 stamina. I'm also doing something similar to Monster Hunter and Minecraft. As you run around and do things, using stamina will eat away at what I call your stamina cap. The stamina cap starts at the stamina max, but then slowly drains as you use stamina, which can only regenerate to the stamina cap. I don't know if it'll be this speed as shown in the gif, or faster or slower, but this is how it works. You regenerate 1% of your stamina compared to the stamina cap every game tick, meaning you get it all back in 3.3 seconds from 0. If your stamina cap is low because you've been running around a lot, you could go from 0 to the stamina cap and have the gain be painfully slow. Not only that, but your stamina begins to regenerate slower depending on where it's at when it starts to regenerate compared to the max stamina as opposed to the stamina cap. This means that although it will always take 3.3 seconds to go from 0% stamina to 100% stamina, it takes a few seconds to start rising. If you're at 50% of your max stamina, but 90% of your stamina cap, it will take 1.3 seconds to start rising, just the same as if you're at 50% of your max stamina and 50% of your stamina cap. Basically, the lower your stamina cap goes, the more you're punished for it. Like in Monster Hunter, you're going to be able to regain the stamina cap by eating food, so this will be necessary if running a character who uses a lot of high stamina attacks. Or if you're literally sprinting every where.

Hey man, thanks for the response.
Yeah all items are gonna be rectangular with dimensions ranging from 1x1 to around 5x2 for guns and stuff. Basically identical to RE4. Right now my code is like this:
//search whole grid //iff there is an empty space in whole grid
value_exists = ds_grid_value_exists(inventory, 0, 0, gridwidth, gridheight, 0);
if (value_exists){
//create xy variables from that first empty space
xslot = ds_grid_value_x(inventory, 0, 0, gridwidth, gridheight, 0);
yslot = ds_grid_value_y(inventory, 0, 0, gridwidth, gridheight, 0);

//create x2y2
xslot2 = ds_grid_value_x(
inventory,
xslot+itemwidth-1,
yslot,
gridwidth,
gridheight,
0);

yslot2 = ds_grid_value_y(
inventory,
xslot,
yslot+itemheight-1,
gridwidth,
gridheight,
0);

ds_grid_set_region(inventory,xslot,yslot,xslot2,yslot2,1);

This code works fine if an item is 1x1, however any bigger and items start to overlap, appear half out of the grid, etc. I'm just not sure how to go about defining the region I need for each item, and for them to appear in empty spaces without overlap and shit

- antropomorphic animal
- wears clothes
- has big disney/anime-like eyes
- has human-like hair on the top of their heads
- is not intented to look cute or funny
- is intented to look cool or sexy
if you check 3 or more is furry
Umbrella warriors, Bokube, and Guncat for example look more like cute cartoons than furries to me.
I would say monster girls would be furry is they look more like an animal than like a girl.
A wolf girl is not furry to me if she has ears and a tail, but will be furry to me if she has a snout and fur covering all her body.

You can for example make a furry game and don't put anything questionable in it, like Armello or Dust An Elysian Tail.

Woah. I hope that you are joking ?
Blame smartasses like you who want artistic work to be instantly delivered to them on a plate in exchange for litteraly nothing, and bastards who ask artists for free work in exchange for vague networking promises and/or a later pay that never comes.

You want someone to work 1+week on an illustration for you ? To spend weeks on a set of backrounds ? To spend months doing 3d environment design ? To animate your characters ? To draw them and/or model/rig and texture them ? Pay the price up front, or fuck off.

Do you think that the animators working on the anime your reaction pic is ripped out from would simply have accepted to work on it for free if their studio manager told them that they wanted to "collaborate" with them ? Don't you think that they all have rents to pay ? Taxes ?Maybe even entire families to feed ? Maybe that they are not rich and/or sheltered ? Maybe that they are not living free of charges in their parents basement like you ?

Art is work, lots of it. And any worker deserves his fucking pay.
You ain't happy with it ? Go away, or find yourself some gullible fool who will put up with your bullshit instead.

You are the filth here, anon. Get bent.
