The true dev way is to do almost everything yourself and then hire people (who have no say on the project as a whole) to do the stuff you're bad at once the project is almost done.

This. If you're motivated and want to actually do anything, you'll fucking die and get pushed out by the big players who've been at Valve for ages.

It's great if you want to do nothing for days, being stuck in meetings and letting whatever skills you had go to waste on some minor thing nobody will give a fuck about, and if you start anything of your own, be ready to drop everything to hotfix some hot bug Reddit found and your not-boss is telling you to fix.

deadlines, everyone is overloaded with work, you have to often put out a game you know is bad or ideas you know are bad because you lack time or the people at the top want things a certain way.

money is alright, but imo if you actually want to enjoy making games you should just have a regular job + do game dev on the side, until/unless you can make money purely by going the indie route after you finish something.

From what I remember reading there's a high layoff rate when a project is finished. Hours can be around 60+/week. There's more going into the field then new positions being made. You don't have any input on what you're working on. Everyone feels stressed as feature creep happens from higher up. I think someone once compared his workplace to a casino environment. Don't take meme classes with the word videogame used in them. You'll be able to do gameshit with a general programming/3DArt class without limiting yourself to just that.

You know how when you make a code change and save it, it spins for a bit recompiling all the C# code to effect your changes. Well in the latest beta they kludged it so if you add a json file to a directory, all the script files in that directory (and subdirs) get compiled into a DLL, so that code only gets rebuilt when code in that assembly gets changed, rather than getting rebuilt when ANY code is changed in the project.

The idea is I guess to chop your code into a bunch of smaller DLLs, so code refresh time is smaller. Its been a pain so far, mainly due to trying to make third party code fit the paradigm

No progress to report today - ran out of my meds, and I can't focus without them. I did download a video converter though, I should have some webms of my progress later tomorrow. All of my old demo FLV's are greater than 3mb when converted.

Next up should be implementation of a "build" screen, and I've got some notes jotted down for the tutorial level - the true "level one" of the single player experience. I've dreamed up a couple other bits of game functionality, and I'm playing with the idea of limiting one-object-per-tile. Python is already a pretty inefficient language, and I would probably cringe if I knew how long each update operation takes per tick. Limiting the object count in a tile would cut down on this.

Rollerblade anon is becoming rotatedev tier annoying.
>>
So apparently there's a library for love2d called timetraveler that handles rewinding for longer than 60 seconds at 60fps without a single frame drop.
I wasted so much time on this shit watching braid dev talking about compressing data and other optimization bullshit when straight storing data doesn't even make my cpu gives a shit, it's not like i'd need to record hundreds of objects for an insane period, this is enough for a 2d prince of persia type of rewind.

restricting myself to traditional skate construction is limiting myself in potential design elements that I could be experimenting with. Even if I'm sacrificing some realism I'd much rather experiment with what looks good to me and my team

I also want to avoid too many small parts because that will negatively impact the aesthetic as a whole.

I dunno about the skates but having them all look the same like they did in Future would be a mistake I think. Like the Shaolin Soccer idea. And the Robot idea.

Also most of them have shitty personalities and inflated egos. For example, there's an idiot bullying someone else in front of everyone on live stream just because he wants to beat mirror's edge by playing the intended way.

You would still need animations, models and textures for every single object while still keeping the file size within sane levels, having shit models next to good post progress and graphics would be jarring too.
2D gives you a nice level of abstraction and immersion without needing quality graphics, UE4 is pretty much the worst engine possible for a project like this and I'm not surprised that a SS13 remake never took off if this is the level of decision making of the average aspiring remaker.

You start by breaking it up into smaller, manageable pieces. "Each step being broken down into even smaller steps, the impossible becomes possible."

It's really difficult for a single person to write a complex game engine. Even for the most experienced programs it takes a long time, because it is a heavy workload for one person.
>>
>>183650979
I wouldn't write a complex one. I'd write a pretty simple one. Again mostly to put into practice my theoretical knowledge and see it "live". Unlike many here, I have no aspirations for commercial gamedev or anything. I'm here for the learnings.

>>
>>183652510
There's no such thing as an object, it's nodes all the way down.

It's a better idea to put the "functionality" node at the top since it makes writing scripts more convenient, nodes do inherit some things from their parents like position and modulation, and there are the special nodes like viewports and collision shapes that depend on their positions in the tree but there's usually no functional difference.
>>
>>183652758
you can just jump into unity and start doing tutorial projects. they have a bunch. and then if you want to switch engines or w/e later you can.
>>
>>183652758
I started by watching Game Maker tutorials. I kind of regret the amount of time I wasted on it, but it really was a pretty good launch point. Its scripting language is gay, but it gives you a pretty good idea of what the gist of coding is.

>>
>>183651150
Start by writing platform independance layers. You will need something that can kick into your hardware for Graphics so I suggest you start with OpenGL as it is available almost everywhere except on Xbox and maybe portable consoles. For desktop windowing and events the best is to use each systems APIs. Win32 is well documented and Xorg is a fucking mess. Consoles dont have this problem AFAIK but you'll need development kits which you won't get if you're just in as a hobby. You'll also need things like network and threading, most certainly a custom reliable memory allocator.

Once you have these low level abstraction systems you can start thinking about the high level aspects of your engine, eg how are users (developers and players) interacting with it (states, resources, devices and controls), how are objects represented (entites/actors/agents/...). Once these are implemented comes the tooling which is the biggest chunk. An actually achievable thing would be a Quake 3 engine clone for Windows.

Hitler did nothing wrong
>>
>>183650329
you start with a game loop, add rendering, input, content loading and whatever else you think you need. but the gameloop is the core of any engine.

Heavy concentrations of radiation in the upper atmosphere indicate it is highly likely that the planet surface is irradiated. Unmanned vehicles or teleportation are not possible either due to the storms. An orbital scan would acquire some of the data, but may not be conclusive. A surface expedition would certainly provide all the data, but with some risk.

To add onto what that other anon said, I feel the need to stress that you make sure your game loop is done correctly from the get go. Specifically in reference to frame skipping and the such. You don't want to end up like a gamemakerfag where your game is locked at a certain frame rate, graphics are tied to logic, and the game itself slows down if the target frame rate can't be hit.
>>
>>183654024
How thin are those walls? You need box colliders with at least a width equal to the diameter of your cylinder collider to stop you.
>>
>>183654352
Ok thanks for the note.

Really looking forward to giving this a spin. I'll start with just the stupidest 5 min game loop in an interpreted language and go from there. I've always been of the opinion, and maybe it will bite me, who knows, but you write whatever you can high-level, identify bottlenecks, then drop down as needed.
>>
>>183653523
you are going to need to do tutorials to learn unity anyway, so do the tiny sample projects or follow along other tutorials.

Each kind of physics node has its own way of checking collisions, Area node collision signals return the colliding node and you can use get_collider in the fixed process for kinematic bodies.
>>
>>183657078
Yeah, I guess it's just the weird enemy movement. Kinematic only returns collisions if it's moving, while they're stop n start. Area I think is solely static objects and RigidBody plays by its own rules.

I'm gonna try preloading the bullet into the enemy script, drawing rectangles around the sprite nodes via code and seeing if I can just get it to return collisions this way, no need to get physics involved if I can avoid it.
>>
>>183657453
If you don't want physics I recommend just using area nodes and running your own movement code, you gotta remember the physics are only updated every fixed process so avoid putting the logic in the plain process function.

It might look like shit, and the UI will be a huge chunk of the screen, but it should be supported. There's people who play on low resolution because their GPUs are shit or because they want to play on windowed and be able to see other shit on the screen while playing (chat clients, etc).

Asuka Langley Soryu (惣流・アスカ・ラングレー Sōryū Asuka Rangurē, IPA: [soːɾʲɯː asɯ̥ka ɾaŋɡɯɾeː]) is a fictional character of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. Within the series, she is designated as the Second Child and the pilot of the Evangelion Unit 02. Her surname is romanized as Soryu in the English manga and Sohryu in the English version of the TV series, the English version of the movie, and on Gainax's website. Asuka is voiced by Yūko Miyamura in Japanese in all animated appearances and merchandise; Asuka is voiced by Tiffany Grant in English. In the Rebuild of Evangelion movies, Asuka's Japanese surname is changed to Shikinami (式波).

In a Newtype poll from March 2010, Asuka was voted as the third most popular female anime character from the 1990s.[2]

im actually not sure it will drive up competition. we have a highly driven up competition in recent years from easier to use engines, more open storefronts... and additionally more people out of work looking for a new income.
that last one should actually stay about the same or shrink as we move to basic income because it removes the people attempting gamedev simply because the market looks profitable, not because its something they really want to do.
also the consumer base is going to increase dramatically, the amount free money/time per person is excessively larger than the amount interested in using that free money/time in competition with you.

well also the competition doesnt matter that much.
even right now all creative markets have extreme distributions where a few big things get all the players and money and then everything else fights for the scraps.
if the consumer side growth comes with a more diverse and independent audience it means a growth for diverse and independent works, any lessening of the extreme distribution of profits would be a massive win.

I don't really agree with this and I feel like I've seen it repeated like law in recent years. I've recently been playing baldur's gate 1 and 2, and people in my party get charmed/confused now and again. I can see how certain types of people might cry and ragequit or something, especially if it results in a (possibly perma-) death of a character, but I find it just a fair risk. If charm/stun/etc exists in the world, as in, the player can use it... Then of course the player may be susceptible to it.

Besides, it can be kind of fun trying to babysit a crazed party member. Knocking them out with some sleep or a hold, makes you feel like you've solved a problem creatively. I guess in the case of a single player where you're just sitting and waiting for it to be over, well that could be sort of bad maybe, but even still, if it's bad, it's the dev's poor implementation, not the mechanic's fault. Give the character a reasonable chance at overcoming the obstacle, and if they don't, or choose to risk too much, then they might pay for it.

I'm just rambling but mostly I wanted to say that I think people who cry about control being taken away from the player as this mortal sin sound a bit like whiny crybabies, or overly sensitive or something.

I'm not those anons, but I have always liked the idea where instead of getting frozen, you get your controls mixed up, so you have to quickly relearn the controls to keep playing proficiently. >>183671172
Just as an aside, it will be very good for your skills as a programmer to look at a language or two that's very different from what you mostly use. But also don't make the mistake of shallowly learning 30 languages, instead try to deeply/moderately learn 2-3 that come from fairly different disciplines (java, haskell, asm, or something)

>>183671172
>And just three: Lua, C# (now) and Java.
This is the future we chose.
>>
>>183671172
it is native C# through mono. The only specialized thing is the API. Unityscript (javascript) gets compiled to C# first and then to .net assembly. Or maybe they compile it to IL instead, point is it's the native scripting for unity.

Finally, progress. Tilemap collision system, fast bitwise alignment, on the fly tile data. Needs a touch more tweaking, this will be the framework for my Wonderboy project. Does the webm work? I suck at making these things.

ayo it works. I needed to build the rotation with a down vector instead of an up vector for some reason. crazy thing.

concave corners still fucked though. but convex stuff is swell now.

Depends on the memory allocation method you are using for them. Some methods like VirtualAlloc can garantee zero-filled memory.
