How essential is learning OOP for beginners?

Non-essential but a lot of frameworks use it. I wouldn't think too hard about designing your stuff around any sort of programming doctrine. Just focus on tools in the language/engine and use them when you want to.

Godot is pretty obviously the best engine to use because
>the game has to be 2D with simple graphics
>the game has to be open source
>the game has to cost nothing for both developers and players
The only question is whether Godot is appropriate for this kind of game or if it'd be better to write a 2D engine from scratch.

my first little game didn't use any objects or even arrays at all and was made in a single source file. i don't regret starting out that way because at first i had a really hard time understanding how classes and methods worked.

the best advice i can give you is to just start working on a simple project as soon as possible. you don't need to understand every concept in programming to make a simple game.

Gonna try this again.
How, in the world, to i load a simple text file in ue4?

If the documentation was correct, this would be how:

FString fileContent;
FString GameDir = FPaths::ConvertRelativePathToFull(FPaths::GameContentDir());
FString CompleteFilePath = GameDir + "text/test.txt";
FFileHelper::LoadFileToString(fileContent, *(CompleteFilePath));

But, lo and behold, even though the file exist at that path (Which i've written out to be sure) it claims there is no such file!
Even:
FPaths::FileExists(*CompleteFilePath)
Tells me it doesn't exist.

The folder text has also been added to the "additional non-content folders to package".
Anyone here who knows UE4 that can tell me if this engine TRULY is this useless or whether i've missed something obvious?

You're thinking of Centration, another scam """remake""".
>>
>>183521118
SS13 keeps living because everyone can easily add more stuff on top, the sides, the bottom of the feet and maybe half inside the dysfunctional liver.
Either build an engine that easily plays with plugins, addons and mods, or go with a tool that has documentation available.

Honestly, Godot does sound perfect. Easy scripting language and asset loading for WH40k reference #142 and a backbone with C++ for simulation heavy stuff made by people who know more than dragondrop.

BUT! I am of the strong conviction that any attempts that start with "hey, let's try another remake!" is doomed to fail. Someone has to come forth with a framework that already presents the functionality of the most important systems, i.e. networking, construction, electrical grid, character creation, inventory management, admin functions, chat, jobs, round objectives, minimum of equipment, atmospherics, medbay.
They can be shoddy as all fuck, but you need to get people to a playable state so that they feel like "I bet I could fix this" instead of "I wish someone made this".

try searching steamspy for released platformers and see what comes up.

so you're looking to sell 3k+ copies at $5-10?

it comes down to how good your art is. i'd say merely professional is no longer enough to sell a game on the art alone. you have to have a charming style or be really technically skilled, or have an interesting mechanic.

what's professional quality to you, and are you already skilled enough to achieve it?

This is the game.
You play as Little Red Riding Hood. You look for cake slices to bring to your grandma while hiding from and avoiding the wolves.
Here are the mechanics I have/plan to implement
>picking up and throwing items
>wolves interact with items they see on the ground (ie. if they see a cake slice, they'll pick it up and eat it, if they see a stone they'll kick it away)
>hitting a wolf with a stone will stun it temporarily, after which they'll start chasing you down
>different types of wolves with different behaviors (like a wolf that can't see anything but has very good hearing, or a wolf that can't go after you but can alert other wolves)
>areas blocked by little birds: if you get to close, they'll make noise alerting the guards, so you have to throw a stone at them from afar to make the go away first
And in maybe
>find other types of items to exchange for cake slices (ie. find a carrot, bring it to a rabbit in exchange for a cake slice)
I still feel like this is too little and a game like this just won't be fun. I didn't have any big ambition for it, but still I'd like for it to be at least somewhat enjoyable.

FUCK your shit, blue boxes!

Pressing action key while facing (yes, the red cube is actually facing a direction) a blue cube kills a static cube object and replaces it with moving cube object.
Static cubes are different from moving because of saving performance from all the collision checking that will be going on.

Would one actually need to sync the atmos sim to the clients? Wouldn't it be enough to transmit the result, i.e. the force impulses? If the game needed to present data about the atmosphere on a certain tile for example in a PDA scan, it would poll that from the server, but wouldn't need to store it locally, thus preventing simulation desync?

By that logic, every tile that comes into view would have to be polled by the client to properly render it. If you have a 100-tile wide viewport, that means you need to fetch 100 separate tiles every time a player moves. With 100 players moving one tile every tick, you have 10 000 get requests to fulfill. I have barely any experience, but I read through some primers and the Godot docs. It seems to me that a very authoritative model would come natural, leaving all data and simulation to the server and letting the client deal with presenting / drawing that data?

That's the system Bay12 uses, isn't it?
If I dig up the code, am I going to learn anything, or is it inscrutable nonsense like most of SS13's core systems?

>It slowly levels the two rooms depending on how much of an unsealed border they share until they form a single room.
Well, I was mostly interested in the way pressure behaves; how do you calculate the forces exerted on objects and mobs?
And what about gas leaks, or more specifically open gas canisters? Does this system diffuse them through the room instantly, or does the gas still spread from the source of the leak? I'm not actually sure which is more realistic, but I think spreading from the source of the leak is more interesting gameplay-wise.

If you are interested in the physics of this, I highly recommend the very readable An Introduction To Thermal Physics, by Daniel Schroeder. Well of course you need a slight math background, calculus at least but linear algebra always helps, and not having a teacher will of course make it a bit more difficult, but it's a great text for understanding this stuff from a thermo/statistical mechanics point of view.

They already do that so it wont be a problem, I'll try to move stuff around to see how it fits, just seems weird to me to shrink the cards/avatars even more since there's not much going on in the middle while you fight your opponent.

front, side, and top views are important while modeling. Turn on orthographic view, with numpad 5.
You can also use numpad 2, 4, 6, 8 to rotate the view a bit.

The reason pictures of models are shown at an angle like that is because it's a better way to show off a model.

Combat functions completed - an enemy can now track and attack a variety of targets. Improved path finding in a really hacky way that will serve for the moment.

Hello there

I've been meaning to start a small project that deals with First Person Dungeon Crawler. I've narrowed down the engines I could use to like Unity or maybe RPGMaker with FPLE plugin. Right now I'm leaning heavily on Unity and have done basic shit on it like grid-based movement and trigger event detections. My main concern with Unity is that I have to code all the shit I need for like battle scenes and inventory which RPGmaker already covers. I'm not trying to dodge coding, I can pretty much code shit though not in a professional level.

I'm really confused with what engine I should pursue. If any anons have better suggestions that can implement first-person crawler I'm open for it. I just wanna make graphic assets and shit so I could see what it'll look like prolly shit.

There are not hotkeys at the moment, but there will be.

I'll keep "what's it about/who are you fighting" until I have a game demo that's a webm. I'm still sorting out how to convert FLV's. It is not turn based.

Encryption is sort of the "health" of the game. When it reaches zero, the target (or you) can be deleted or modified. Encryption can sink to 0 - Max Encryption. RAM is the universal resource. It's used to do every action, from movement to attacking. When you "delete" an enemy, they drop whatever RAM they're holding, plus (Max Encryption + Max RAM)/2.

>>
>>183531816
Yes, actually. There was a significant change in their API around 4.14 or 4.15 release which made it so a lot of methods, which used to be included as part of a header the tutorials assume you're using, are now located in other headers.
I had to make some changes in the modules being used in the ProjectName.Build.cs file. Specifically, adding CoreUObject.
"PublicDependencyModuleNames.AddRange(new string[] { "Core", "CoreUObject", "Engine", "InputCore", "HeadMountedDisplay", "UMG" });"

>>
>>183536681
It's easy enough to ignore the degenerate aspects of a fandom.
What's really a problem is when the fandom has so many SJWs that it becomes toxic even to itself. I used to think the Homestuck fandom was like that but it wasn't until I saw Steven Universe that I realized how bad things could get. I'm under the impression that the Voltron fandom is even worse for example, a bunch of them threatened to leak episodes if the writers didn't make their favorite gay ship canon but I don't know much about it.

I have a friend who used to draw porn commissions of all kinds for money. He used a pseudonym and no one has found out he used to draw porn like that. You just have to be careful never to mention even the slightest thing that would link your fake name with your "real" internet name. Basically with that pseudonym never ever discuss anything but the porn game. Keep discussions dry and to the point, that pseudonym only exists for the porn game.

Spent some time rigging my pepsiman proper, once it's done i'll try making at least one not shameful animation (and probnably will have to redo every fucking other one, since i renamed and cleaned up the skellington)
probaly the running one, since it's the one i see the most.

Then i'll figure out blends and will probably have to figure out a playground with measured out spaces for optimal movement and then use the data i get from it to build up the rest of the levels.

Quick question, does doing things on multiple lines have an impact on speed? For example
float a = 1;
a += b;
a *= 0.5;
This is for a shader by the way, if that makes any difference. The reason I ask is I have a line that has just gotten long, and it would look nicer to be split into multiple lines.

Could anyone who knows about game maker tell me why a draw event that draws armour sprites after checking the image index of the player sprite is delayed by one game step? When shit like this happens you've almost always failed to account for when in the step you're passing a variable that you're using elsewhere.
https://docs.yoyogames.com/source/dadiospice/000_using%20gamemaker/events/index.html
Been a while since I've GMed but I assume it comes down to the draw event not getting the updated sprite until the next frame, meaning you need to check earlier somehow (fucking around with beginning and end steps is one way to do this).
>>
>>183542719
There is only one draw event per object (processed after the step event iirc) You can make multiple draw calls during that event. Try not to use draw calls in the step event, I dont fully understand this either - some things work, some dont, just try avoid it. Everything in draw event should process in before the end of the game step, but if it is giving you dramas, look into drawing all draw calls to a surface first and flip the surface to the screen. Been a while since i used gm but good luck.

I used to feel the same way. Now I have a job and a bachelor's degree and am nearly finished with my MA, have been in relationships, have a bunch of friends who care about me, and am happier than I've ever been. And I still gamedev for fun.

Occasionally I still worry about that, but it's less and less, and I have more and more to indicate otherwise.

Here's a big part of the trick. Whenever anything bad happens and you start to think, "I'll be okay," stop and instead think, "I can handle this." And then when you do, you'll reinforce that thought. And eventually it'll be second nature to feel competent and able to succeed.

And that belief is a major part of actually fucking doing it.

Making a minesweeper RPG. It plays like minesweeper except you click on the mines (monsters) to beat them and receive damage. Extremely simple combat system, I don't think I'll change it much. It's kind of like mamano sweeper but it's the classic minesweeper numbering system rather than using the combined level thing (but maybe that's a good way of solving my problem below ..).

I have a design problem though. How do I actually give the player incentive to click on the mines while the map is still mostly uncovered? Seems to me like you'd just want to reveal the whole mineless map first and then start clicking on the mines with all the information you now have.

A really cop-out, lazy way would be to make the enemies stronger the more revealed tiles there are but I don't want to do that.
>>
>>183550658
some bonus points or something like that for early exploration?
>>
So, I've got controls and camera movement and everything worked out for my game (using GameMaker), but it isn't organized well for a full game. Should I start a new project, organize everything better, and just copy my code over? Seems like it'd be easier to keep track of and less confusing/likely to somehow break than trying to just change the one I'm currently working on.
>>
>>183550973
I want the player to feel forced to do it without literally forcing them (e.g. you can only click THIS tile). Bonus points are nice but you can do without them.

One of the designs I thought of was making the gameplay so that you have a starting tile (e.g. from an entrance door) and you can only click adjacent tiles, otherwise it plays the same. But that's not really minesweeper anymore even though it solves the problem.
>>
>>183550658
fog of war, when you kill a monster you unlock more tiles.
>>
>>183551491
you could do an inbetween:
- when you click a tile it reveal the nearest
- but it also lets you click other tile in a big area around the initial one

so you need to click some tiles to increase where you can click on the screen ,sort of
>>
>>183551372

/agdg/ got shitty over the years.

This is 4chan so shitpost is to be expected but it was not as bad as it is now. As proof you can pick any thread from 3 years ago to see 1/4 or 1/5 of progress.

Just look at the thread for this week, nothing but shitposting with no more than 20-30 progress posts out of 750+ posts.

The jams are dying, the demo's day quality and posts are decreasing, and the recap monday is the only thing somehow surviving but with a bunch of people that rarely or don't even post progress in this general anymore.
>>
btw, has anyone funded agdg devs before? I know risk of rain and yanderedev were here. I also knew a few others like that historical battle royale thing...

Anyways, I want to fund some devs with good ideas and get them artists and market for them for a percent. Can I do that here? I also make games.
>>
>>183551491
You control a character spirit and move to new tiles to reveal them. You need to reach an exit to go to the next floor/level which also increases Minesweeper difficulty. Defeating a monster reveals its 8 surrounding tiles and clears revealed monsters. Abilities that can change the placement of monsters on unrevealed tiles. Undefeated monsters could increase difficulty on later levels. Placeable items on revealed tiles that interact with the grid.

50k is enough to fund most people here's living expenses for 2-3 years. Less if some of that goes to art. Although that is already enticing enough for most devs, there's also the marketing. You would probably have to prove yourself in the marketing arena by taking on a small game first.

Which projects look appealing enough to fund, as of right now?

I'm a cryptofag. Made some money off RISE last month from my ico coins and have about another 80k in waves right now. Put the rise profits into FOMX on robin hood and made another 25%. I don't know what else to say?

The cryptos I was in went up 500x since june 2016.

I haven't seen many, but multiplayer games are easy to market to the Twitch crowd, which I imagine brings in a lot of money from the viewers. Honestly cannot confirm, but I saw a dev post his download statistics after being featured in a big stream and it was over 10x normal. So, anything that can be whored on Twitch.

>>183553330
I cashed out Rise and since it covered my expenses in Rise and Waves I put it into FOMX because it was dipped too low as a pharma. I always bet in pharmas that dip too low for failing a test of a drug. They recover eventually and it did. If you're into crypto then consider waves right now. There is no reason they shouldn't hit 30 USD per coin. With coins sell to cover your expenses then let it sit. That's all you have to do.

>>183553752
I missed BTC at 12 each and ETH at 4. I will never forgive myself. Back when they were on /g/ and people were giving away 100s of BTC for shitty drawings.

I also basically daytraded LISK for lousy profit when it ended up becoming pretty valuable. Lost about 20k on that alone.

I realized that I need to shrink my scope by a significant amount. The A.I. system I was writing was loosely based of Maslows hierarchy of needs, but I think my approach might be overkill if I take it further. A simple check of total number of A.I. elements at day start, and instantiating extra would probably suffice.

I don't know. There is no magic formula for making 500x what you put in. It's gambling. Waves wasn't about being an ICO platform when it launched, but it is not. No one could have guessed that. No one could have guessed what would happen after the BTC split either or the recent USD price of BTC that drove Rise to the moon. It's unpredictable, but this is a golden age for making money by doing nothing. Don't let it pass you by.

Best of luck man, I'm looking to do real estate as well. Mostly buy and hold, not interested in flipping or wholesaling.

Be sure you do your research and learn as much as you can about whatever niche you want to invest in, simply having a large amount of capital is a dangerous way to get into real estate, you can easily lose tens of thousands if you buy a shitty deal or mess up when doing your due diligence. Finding someone to partner with who has a lot of knowledge and a solid plan, but is lacking funds might also be a strategy worth looking into.

Even agar.io is well designed.

There's a difference between having technically skilled art (which none of those games have) and good colors, composition, etc. The design parts of art. Every game that has been praised as having simplistic art is good at the design half.

Join a local club or go to interest meet-ups.

I train martial arts, so I'm out every night either training or teaching. I run my own dojo as well. I used to go to a writing group, where we would critique each others work, which was useful for gamedev.

If you want to meet women, go to a yoga or fitness group. Dance groups are also good for this. Dance, martial arts and general fitness classes force you to interact physically with other people, so that will help with your social anxiety.

It's best to choose something that is different from what you do every day (ie. gamedev) and something you have an interest in.

Good luck anon.

If partnering with someone in your area is something you'd be interested in, you should read up on the different types of real estate investing. Single family homes, multi, condos, trailer parks, commercial, raw land, etc. And then the methods buy and hold, flipping, wholesaling, leasing. Then go to local meetups about that style of investing. Avoid any seminars with gurus, people who will sign you up for the one year 15-50k course to learn everything! those are usually shit and scams, you can meet not scumbag people there though. Local meetups are usually smaller and less formal and pitchy, go as someone who is interested in learning at first, as an investor/ partner at a later time.

biggerpockets.com has a bunch of information, and you can get to a vast majority of it without the need to sign up. And even then it's like 200 dollars a year, basically like any other subscription service.

Women go to fitness groups to change themselves. They usually have low self-esteem or are unhappy with the way they look. It is extremely easy to improve your standing with women at these places by complementing them. The trick is to flirt and complement, but don't seem overly interested.

By having nice hair, cologne, expensive accessories (watch, maybe a signet ring) and a haughty disinterested attitude, they will come flocking and then you just take your pick.

I added multiple offices to my game dev sim game, because as my friend and I played the game we realized that having 1 office was ugly, and it wasn't that challenging when it came to expanding & setting up new workplaces

so now you need to buy buildings in order to expand, which makes the progression more fun and the game more challenging, because each building has a different shape, so you won't have the same workplace layout every time

besides, it just wouldn't work in GMOTA with how the gameplay is structured, along with Doom maps in general, for GMOTA it's best if most things you pick up are just good from the word go, though there's some items that can be upgraded as you play onwards.
The standard bullet shot for the arm gun can be upgraded to allow the player to shoot it more rapidly if they pick up some items, for example.

A) Called yourself a 1MA
and
B) Acknowledged you hired programmers

Now you are
C) "WHAT ARE YOU EVEN ON ABOUT" ing like you always do

which makes you
D) A clown
>>
>>183570285
yeah []J works on rippus, he does half the programming on it... i didnt hire him though, he simply joined the project as a co-dev, gets a cut (of jackshit) and when you work so hard to make me depressed about Restricted-RPS not having players you're also working to make him depressed.
i did hire someone on rippus, the narration voice actor. hiring is you pay people money to work for you and own their output.

1MA too tuff for you eh? Thought you were hot shit didntcha. Best you can do without hiring programmers is shit like your loli jam powerpoint presentation. kek

Do men voice actors cost money?
>>

Yeah, you did. But beside that and more to the point, you're not a 1MA. You shouldn't make it obvious you are bothered by having your self-proclaimed 1MA status challenged or else everyone will remind you that you're not a 1MA whenever you flap your lips about it again. I know I will.
>>
>>183570546

oh and i was confused because you said
>your latest game
which i would take to mean either Social Interaction Trainer or Whip the Vote or if you meant latest work detective prototype of for which it stands (dropped) or something..... Rippus was started pre-TSOSHE
>>
Fucking gamemaker man. Does my head in. Im doing more advanced shit with dsgrids, perlin noise, saves, loads, shaders etc all kinds of shit. But can't for the fucking life of me figure out how to make a simple fucking movement key exclusive. Eg If im moving left, and press right key at the same time, just dont register the fucking right key? Holy fuck there are some convoluted solutions out there, this is fucking bullshit for something so simple.
>>
>>183570717
>[]J singlehandedly revoked my 1MA status
that motherfucker
>>
>>183570751
You've already cracked the seal. You've hired coders multiple times, now you're backpedaling from "NO" to "okay but I didn't pay" yada yada. Don't care. Not 1MA. Revoked.
>>
>>183570717
I only wrote the server. He paid me a percent of the sales. I wouldn't exactly call that "hiring". I would have made much more money (or not taken the job) if he was doing something insane like paying me by the hour.

all voice actors cost money if you want them to deliver.
if a voice actor says they'll do something for free it means theyre not going to finish.

Half the programming is all the programming when 1MA is concerned. No need to intervene for gogem, he wants to be a big boy and claim 1MA status and keep hiring coders to "help" him, he can handle the ridicule that results.

This, for example, is a bad discipline meme. It's basically among the dumbest drivel this general has to offer: >>183571868

You'd have to be pretty braindead or never have worked on anything to think this is a good point.
>>
>>183571838
I don't think people can end up like him he's the result of deliberate efforts to be a jerkoff.

Certain things though other people if they have weak character could find themselves doing maybe. Like claiming they made games by themself when they had someone else program it.
>>
what's your estimated annual income from game dev?

autismbux
>>
>>183572496
ok wtf is autismbux actually? is it disability payments?
>>
>>183572060
i'd say that he's even below some people that haven't completed their games yet. he's not respected, nor particularly talented, and not even mildly successful compared to other devs who've released their games. his attitude and accomplishments are far too disproportionate for anyone to actually take him seriously anymore.
>>
>>183572539
yeah some people abuse the wide breadth of autism diagnosis to leech money from government disability programs.
some people also use the term to just refer to government payouts in general such as for unemployment or education.
>>
>>183572539
It's welfare. A frightening amount of nodevs in agdg are on it.
>>
>>183572539
>is it disability payments?
yeah you're deemed unfit to work or unemployable because of your autism. i'm high-functioning so i can still game dev kinda and you're encouraged to have a hobby or do things that could lead to employment in the future.
>>
>>183572673
There was a time when his brand or whatever he was trying with the youtube and everything still had a fresh reputation, it wasn't fully tied to his school shooting games or newgrounds things, and he even got something close to respect here.

He fucked that up wonderfully.

I added arrow rotation and wobble to make them behave more realistic. Not sure about keeping the wobble tho, looks a bit weird.
>>
>>183573505
It looks fine. Arms are shit though. Try to include the left arm in the drawing animation somehow, it looks too robotic.Maybe you could move the arms a bit back too, they look 2long.
>>
>>183573505
agree with the other anon, the arms need some kind of idle animation. maybe have them slowly waver around a bit until you actually use the bow

The wobbling should be there because that's how a real arrow behaves, but maybe slower and less yanky

They already do that, you can see it at the beginning of the video. I will make it more pronounced tho.

>>183573691
I will play around with the right arm to see if i can give it some more movement without it breaking other stuff. The camera will definitely stay in place though, since it's placed exactly where the model's eyes are and the arms are actually realistic proportions, the fov just makes them seem long
