Typically no. Good artists make mock ups for everything. From character design to environments. Throwing away old drawings is very common. How about innovation through gameplay? Who gives a shit if the races in your game are elves + dwarfs or space elves + space dwarfs or shadow elfs + shadow dwarfs or whatever else "original" things you come up with. Theme is something for AA studios to care about, since they have enough money for assets to build their game around that theme. As an indie dev you should aim for unorthodox or niche gameplay.

Wolves will pick up items they see on the ground.
This animations is still WIP, but eventually it will split like this:
>if the item is a rock, throw it away
>if it's a cake slice, eat it
I messed up the pace here, but technically here she picks up something, looks at it, and goes back to idle pose.
I want to also make a more 'seductive' animation but I'm not sure if it will come looking right with my weight painting.

You seem to be discounting research, design and development.

It's easy to do something if you have a plan. If someone has done all the design or you are just copying something else. Sure, if all the ground work is done it is easy to whip up a model or animation, but that isn't the case here.

This anons project is unique and he has spent some time developing his idea. Developing ideas takes time.

And that is what doesn't get done enough around here. So many yesdev wannabes just diving into engines and throwing together assets and physics and calling it a game. It's not a game. It's not progress, you are just fucking around.

Write a GDD, mock-up your ideas, do your concept art, make paper prototypes and plan everything in advance. That way you don't need to spend three weeks posting the same shitty 'progress' with slightly altered UI or shaders.

Just because you are amateurs doesn't mean you can't do things properly.

A lot of successful solo devs and small groups "found" their game's core mechanic while dicking around, and then explored as many variations on that mechanic as possible.

Yes, hard work and planning are important but the idea that you need a detailed GDD in advance is just false.

>>
>>183488287
I think it's good to at least write down a general idea of what you got planned. Just "winging it" is a good way to get fucked.
Id had an entire fucking bible for Doom, and while they didn't put everything in, they followed most of it.
>>
>>183487792
Because a lot of indie games in current year are going for a overly cartoonish or over simplified look (or both) because it's trending and takes less time or effort. In the 90's games started peaking in beauty because either they started getting better artists, or the artist they had started getting better or more used to work with the stuff they had. I want to believe the indie scene will reach a peak like that someday.
>>
>>183487083

>>
>>183488142

>>
>>183488354
>Just "winging it" is a good way to get fucked.
Can confirm. Going from idea to production has resulted in losing myself somewhere down the road every single time. This time I'm designing first, then worry about implementation. This should also result in heightened productivity, because I won't have to interrupt the coding or asset creation to think up the next feature.
>>
>>183485980
It's been a while since I've used GM but I'm thinking it could either be..
>Your objects collision mask which if I remember correctly is set in the sprite setup

>>
>>183488556
>Isn't it possible to just hire/contract more people

Again, consistency between assets is an issue. But if you can find something fitting it's very worth it.
>>
>>183487676
GET DOWN
>>
>>183488595
To further add to this, having at least a framework design document and making todo lists can really help with productivity.
Your big projects can seem a hell of a lot smaller if you break them up into pieces and chip away with them bit by bit. It'll tickle your brain in the right ways when you start seeing all of those DONES on your checklist.
>>
>>183488556
Sure it is, but 3D just brings so many annoying nuances.

Id had released like 15 games in total before Doom, including Wolfenstein 3D. By the time they worked on Doom they were industry veterans, so it makes sense that they had a huge DD. For beginners a DD is completely useless because anything written down will be based on zero experience and thus completely outdated a few weeks into the development.

Tearing my hair out here. Love UE4 for tons of shit, but how in the world could reading a simple .txt file be this hard??

Here's what i'm doing:
I have a .TXT file in the following path /GameName/Content/CustomText/test.txt .
I've added CustomText to the Additional paths to Package AND Additional paths to Copy in the package settings.
STILL when i do my normal play in selected viewport, the file is not found;

Not by FString path = FString{FPaths::GameContentDir() + "text/test.txt"};
FFileHelper::LoadFileToString(fileContent, *(path));

Nor by FPaths::FileExists(*path) .

Jams are good practice for new devs. Limiting your creativity is a good way to improve creativity. Making jam games that are nothing like games you normally make is a good way to explore new things in the engine you use, or new maths you don't normally use, or various other things that you might not touch while making your normal game. These could possibly help you when you do get stuck on your main game. Actually finishing a game is also good practice.

I agree jams are the best practice, it's a really good thing to make a game from start to finish no matter the timeline or how complete.

For some devs the idea of finishing a game before it's fully polished and perfect is so painful a jam is the only way they will ever finish a game or break their curse. I would say I am one and benefited greatly from doing jams early otherwise I would never finish anything and learn to make bigger games.

But ironically many of those devs who need jams most turn their nose up at jams because it's scary.

I actually like its custom scripting language. That said it's getting various more standard languages like C# and Python in 3.0. As well as "GDNative" which allows for C++ and some other languages.
The UI is pretty simple and easy to navigate, so I've never really had a problem with it.
I've made some prototypes with it and enjoyed it. I'll be using it to make my first full real game.

I don't really see how you'd be able to compete with it, it's open source, free, and there's already a lot of people using and contributing to it.

Incorrect. If you are trying to see if vertex V is inside a sphere with center C radius r, the formula is:
> (V.x-C.x)^2 + (V.y-C.y)^2 + (V.z-C.z)^2 > r*r
7 floating point ops
1 comparison

If you are computing is vertex V is inside a box with center C and half extent E, the formula is:
>V.c+E.x>V.x && V.c-E.x<V.x && V.c+E.y>V.y && V.c-E.y<V.y && V.c+E.z>V.z && V.c-E.z<V.z
6 floating point operations
5 boolean operations
6 comparions

I probably made a typo in the formula but the number of operations is correct. A sphere primitive is faster for collision detection.

Thanks. I downloaded it and took a look. It's still not quite what I want to make.

Think about Game Maker... you loaded it up for the first time and it was piss easy to get started. The list of folders on the left were even in the order you needed to add to them.
>Add a sprite, an editor pops up, I can instantly doodle something
>Add an object, choose its sprite
>Add a room, place the object
>Press play, the object is there
>Go back, add a script to the object, the syntax is trivial

Godot is undiscoverable. I see a messy interface with terms like "FileSystem" and "Orphan Resource Explorer". I can't draw something, I have to "Import Texture", browse for it, select texture format, etc. I'm sure it's good for larger projects, but I think I'll need several tutorials to be able to do anything at all.

I'm proposing something a lot more visually-focused, discoverable, and jam-friendly.

He is wrong in that but box collision still more expensive, since it is not axis aligned, the calculation is more than checking if a point is between 3 boundaries. you have to transform the point local space of box, which is a lot of multiplications
>>
>>183501019
that's really not necessary. even if it was, your time is better spent practicing anyway. just pick one of the skills you're most interested in and practice.
once you're bored of that or sufficiently skilled, move on to the next one you find enjoyable.

Godot is harder to start with but it's very easy to use once you get used to it.
You don't really need to mess with the resource exporting and such, just move image files to the project's folder and you're set (and disable image filtering in the settings if you want pixel-perfect stuff).

If you are serious about making your own engine then you will need to understand your competition.
>>
>>183501619
>which is a lot of multiplications
At most 4 actually.
>>
Fuck visual programming, does Godot use C# yet?
>>
>>183501450
Not that anon. But to each their own I guess. I like Godot more because I have more control over how my game is structured. I also never understood why Gamemaker has an image editor. I would never want to use that over Aseprite.
For png files you don't have to import them as textures, you can just use them as is. You only need to import a texture if you want to compress it, like for textures used in 3D.
Also in Godot 3.0 importing is automatic, so you don't have to do it manually anymore.

I personally find these things a bit of a clusterfuck. GM does it better than Construct, though. Maybe I can find a better overall approach to it.

Problem is, as soon as you go 3D you automatically have a shitton more work to do. Anyone who can move a mouse around can make some MSpaint sprites to get started with, but making even a simple 3D model is a lot more work. Even making a halfway functional camera system can be a nightmare in 3D, whereas it's quite easy to make a decent 2D one.

Box:

In first-person shooters, do you guys prefer big/floaty jumps like Halo or short/fast jumps like in Titanfall?
I like both tbqh, so I can't decide which route to take. Bigger floaty jumps might put more emphasis on vertical combat and exploration while making platforming easier, while faster jumps might put more emphasis on horizontal combat and focusing on movement speed while strafing and also making platforming more challenging.

I'm so conflicted about this. While I like building up strafejump speed in Quake, I hate that you can't just stop in midair and switch directions. D44M gives you the most air control where you can double jump and then switch directions during that second jump. I've already added full control mid-air in the first jump where you can switch directions even as you're making that first jump, followed by 5 more double jumps where you don't lose any horizontal control of your movements. I just need to figure out how high and how fast these jumps should be.

stopping midair and switching directions in source is just making a quick airstrafe 180

watch any rocket jump movie in TF2, you can see how quickly you can make turns and how sharp you can make em

with air strafing you actually have full control, but it's in your A and D keys rather than WASD entirely, and you get a greater range of motion because of it. simpler motions like turning a 180 midair are a bit tougher but you get more complex motions available to you as well

you don't use your w key, you hold the A or D keys and turn your mouse gradually in the direction you want to turn. using A and D for different turns can affect the outcome

E.G. if you hold A while turning right, you will get a really broad turn that'll accelerate you greatly but this only is good for long rocket jumps where you're spending a lot of time in the air and trimping with demoman

if you turn in the direction you're strafing, you'll accelerate quicker but you wont reach top speeds as quickly since the acceleration returns decay past a certain point, but you can make really quick sharp turns like this

holding the W key stunts your strafe momentum and acceleration and reduces your turning contro. when you air strafe you just want to use the strafe keys

Sup /agdg/, I'm not a gamedev but have professional experience working on engines and real-time 3D applications (had done some things in medical simulation too). >>
>>183512510
Maybe, although most games aren't praised for their writing. In the context of >>183500280 posting that sad frog I just put what I figured would suffice for a 1MA.

I haven't reached a point where I would need to write anything for character development that I haven't already read before, that could be my own limitation though. I wonder what kind of practicing playwrights do to create good dialogue. That might actually be a more pertinent suggestion.
>>
>>183512779
we're gonna be going for a largely JSRF-like OST but we might go a little bit more urban/hip-hop (like quadrophonia, video related) on some ends, and more techno/eurobeat on other ends. Less acid house/rock influence I'm feeling.

Not the people here I believe. Enginedev isn't something I think new devs should look into as it's very different from making games. A set of videos about what game engines are and why a company would make their own could be fun. Explore the history and different builds of engines could be good maybe. If you do want to teach people about making engines go for it though.

Yeah I've spent a good amount of time setting that particle system just right I better make good use of it now. Pic related, the particle variables I have rigged and working at the moment.
>Will wet enemies have a damage modifier to certain types of attacks?
That's complicated, I don't want kitting enemies around towards water/other things all the time to be part of the gameplay, so I think being wet will probably be just a little cosmetic detail for enemies for the most part.
>Can the FoV from Knight be adjusted for darker environments?
It can, lots of FoV stats that can easily be changed around for upgrades/darker rooms/etc.

Like game pitches?
http://orteil.dashnet.org/gamegen
https://twitter.com/PeterMolydeux

Like actual specific mechanics? The trick here is to create relationships between different game elements. Like, let's take healing in an fps as an example. You tie it to one of the other game systems:
- Heal when you deal damage
- Heal when you are in cover
- Heal when you sprint
- Heal when you get a kill
- Heal when you reload
- Heal with medkits
- Heal when you're at a waypoint you control
- Heal when you're in the sunlight / not indoors
All of those possibilites ties healing to different systems, and they all have different ramifications, some good some bad. Once you have a few systems in place you can brainstorm by writing them all on a really big sheet of paper and drawing potential (and existing) connections between them.

Of fucking course they choose not to. I don't think an artist would have much fun if someone else told them what to draw.
Men draw "unrealistic" bodies because men like to draw things that look good. I hate drawing men because I'm not interested in men. I love thick and relatively unrealistic bodies, and therefore I chose to draw/3D-model them.
>TL;DR
Men usually love women and they chose to exaggerate the features they love the most, since that fulfills the artist.
>>
>>183515129
>I don't think an artist would have much fun if someone else told them what to draw.
So you have no idea how artist works on projects? Just look at Mtg, they do a bunch of images just to represent the plane properly so that every artist is on track and represent a part of the plane, either its resident, monsters, various areas, etc. in respect to the established lore/themes/style.

Artist draw what they're told to draw, they simply do it well.

That isn't to say there can't be outliers, but asking someone to give actual focus to learning something for more than fifteen to twenty minutes at first is pretty challenging.

Construction, Forms, and Shading mixed with some painting info on color theory and composition and you could accomplish quite a bit of better than mediocre art for your game.

Why do people like SS13?

I don't mean this is any condescending way. I played SS13 in 2007, where I hosted my own RP server and was happy to play with 8 or 10 people. The game was a small, but high quality space simulation, and that was that.

Nowadays people play it like some sort of... GTA-in-space?

Its fun to tell stories. That's literally why you play D&D too. I personally think that no matter how compelling you think your story or experience is as a developer it well never equal even a tenth of the experience a player feels when they are given the freedom to tell their own story.

The appeal is that its the most complicated multiplayer game ever conceived of that actually works. You know the meme of the dream game where you can "do anything". Within the confines of what SS13 is about (being an employee on a futuristic space station) you pretty much can do anything. Give it a few more goes until you get "that" round where you play an antagonist successfully or end up significantly involved with what is happening in the round and it just clicks.

Then try to do something simple enough like a platformer, and go up from there

Not trying get people to spoon feed me but what do you mean by this?

Not sure what OOP is and I'm not entirely sure I know what "the basics" of programming are.

VR is such a perfect medium for God games, why's everybody focusing on shooters with teleport mechanics, those are dumb as fuck.

follow some tutorials first, then make a simple game on your own that you can finish within two weeks.

Obviously, you don't draw for 5 hours straight. Draw 2 hours, take 1 hour break, draw again.
I used to draw in small sessions about a year ago and i had barely any progress. Then i started doing more and noticed that after ~15-30 minutes of drawing i am getting in the zone and becoming completely immersed in the process. And so in last few months i improved better, than in the whole previous year.

I expect lots of drama, especially if googs is allowed to join.

>>183520580
Maybe you're right. We'd have to do it open source from the start, though.

The basics would be the keywords and general logic behind most of the languages (variables, conditionals, loops, etc). It's basically a foundation so if you get this you'll probably get most languages just by interpretation.

OOP stands for object oriented programming and it's a paradigm that revolves around the idea that everything is an "object" in memory, created from a "blueprint" (class), it's what C# and Unity use, even though you may never use some concepts of OOP if you stick to MonoBehaviour derived classes.

Just google tutorials for programming in general, then OOP, then unity.
quill18 on youtube has a C# for total beginners on his channel and it's pretty good.

Is this jump too floaty? I'll reply to this with a faster jump for comparison.

I dunno, I think it might be a good idea after all.
We could probably do it. It's not like any of the other servers run on anything but unpaid amateurs who like 2D spaceman games.

But would we need to enginedev or would Godot would be fine?

make a simple game like pong or concentration, doesn't matter how shoddily done it is as long it is completed. then do research to improve the code by experiencing which techniques increase efficiency and/or are commonly used. once you understand the importance of scope and design then you can start putting your imagination to work on what you want and just learn the specifics as you go along.

You can make Unity games without proper OOP just fine.
