Do werebeasts not need to eat or drink? I had a werebeast attack and that only injury was he bit one of my dwarves feet off. I wasn't sure if that counted for being infected or not so I went on the safe side and walled him up. It's been a bit now, he hasn't turned and its surely been enough time for him to be hungry or thirsty, but he isn't.

Why are scimitars functionally identical to short swords?

For that matter, what's the deal with pikes? are they any good? (I realize that both pikes and halberds will be much better once toady represents their greater reach)
>>
>>183147353
Pikes have greater penetration than spears.
>>
>>183147353
They're functionally identical because their raws are pretty much the same, the only difference is that the pommel strike of the scimitar has a contact area 50 while the pommel strike of the short sword has a contact area of 100. As for why do they have identical raws, well, I have no idea.

Pikes, as >>183147484 said, have greater penetration, 20% more going by the wiki, but they require two arms to use for most humans and dwarves.
>>
>>183147353
I mean, how would a scimitar be functionally different from a straight sword?

>Physical weathering, also called mechanical weathering or disaggregation, is the class of processes that causes the disintegration of rocks without chemical change. The primary process in physical weathering is abrasion (the process by which clasts and other particles are reduced in size). However, chemical and physical weathering often go hand in hand. Physical weathering can occur due to temperature, pressure, frost etc. For example, cracks exploited by physical weathering will increase the surface area exposed to chemical action, thus amplifying the rate of disintegration.

All right my dudes. After being inspired by the writefaggotry in the previous thread, I have decided I would contribute a bit myself with a short vignette. Or, so I thought. Turns out I uh, I went full autism, and created a rather lengthy story. Also pls no bully, but I incorporated the races from the mod I have published ( http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=12897 ). The mod has a .txt file containing lore stuff for all 12 races added by my mod (though only a few of them are used in the story) so reading it would probably clear a few things up. However, it probably isn't necessary. Anyway, here is the product of (I estimate) roughly 5 hours of constant work:

https://pastebin.com/frYr5CbV

If you read it pls tell me how you felt about it, what you liked/disliked ect. I actually hope to eventually make a living as a writer so little things like this are a good way to practice.

I made another test, this one with spears vs pikes, you can check the full results here: https://pastebin.com/mQrpFMhe

The spear seems to be the superior weapon, the humans with the pikes didn't even win once, they got close sometimes, but never enough to win, while the humans with spears won and several times with a number of survivors significantly higher. This is pure speculation, but I think the reason why the humans with spears did better than the humans with pikes is that you only need one hand to hold the spear, while you need two to hold a pike, this is a big disadvantage, since if an attack manages to disable an arm, the effectiveness of the pike will be lowered drastically, while with a spear, you only have to worry about damage done to the arm that is holding the weapon, the damage done to the other arm will not affect the effectiveness of the weapon. The next step of this test would be to test these weapons against large creatures.

Yeah I kind of went overboard with it. I didn't intend for it to be so long but I couldn't really think of any ways to shorten it and besides, I genuinely enjoy writing so its not like I had anything to lose by taking my time with it. Its a really nice feeling to be writing a story and feel a sudden urge to wrap it up only to realize "Hey wait a minute, I don't have a deadline. I can take my time and just keep going!" Its great.

Although to be honest this is the longest story I've ever written for anything. I'm pretty proud of it.

>A mean, it's obvious that you're a regular joe in terms of writing technique

How could you suggest I improve? I have definitely noticed I tend to write in a sort of "samey" way sometimes. I'd really like to get better.

>but all in all it made me a lot interested in your mod races. What inspired their design?

Well a lot of my creative process comes from a stream of consciousness kind of thing. I just come up with a vague idea of what I want and it all just sort of comes together naturally, like solving a puzzle. However, I did have an overall set of guidelines for the races I intended to add. Since animal men already existed, and plenty of other mods tackled adding in more traditional fantasy races, I focused on adding more unique and "out-there" races, hence the name of my mod. My general ruleset was:

>They shouldn't be just "animal people", there should be some extra stuff going on.
>They shouldn't directly mimic a commonly used fantasy race
>If they do end up breaking rule one or two, their culture should be different enough that they could be considered a separate entity.

My way of figuring out just what I wanted was creating a culture and assigning it to a site, and then creating the physical creature after. Like for the Rux, for example, the first thing that popped into my head was the idea for a race of backstabbing schemers. I assigned them the [TREE_CITY] site, and then asked myself, what sort of creatures would fit a site like this? Birds was the first thing that popped into my mind, and after a few tweaks the Rux were all set up.

There's some more specific stuff I could go into as well, so if you have any more questions focused on specific races I'd be happy to answer them also.
>>
>>183173960
>How could you suggest I improve? I have definitely noticed I tend to write in a sort of "samey" way sometimes. I'd really like to get better.
take actual courses instead of listening to people on the internet.

even the most celebrated writefaggotry on 4chan and fanfic sites sounds cringey to people outside the echochambers, and certainly wouldn't pass as good literature. taking advice on 4chan will only reinforce bad habits.
>>
>>183174415
Oh I also take writing courses. I just like posting my stuff here because I find 4chan is pretty good at tearing apart what people care about so even if the flaws that are pointed out are exaggerated, they still point me in the right direction. I mean, look at what you just did now. If I hadn't already been taking courses, the idea would certainly have been implanted in my head thanks to your advice.

I was thinking about doing that after finishing a few other tests. The idea is to make a race that's just humans big enough to use two-handed weapons with only one hand and see if that changes anything.

dickgirl protagonist anon here, I am happy to see someone was inspired. I'll make this post a rolling critique as I go through.

First thing is that first sentence. It's too long and not a great hook. Start a little more vague and unspecific so the reader is drawn in.

You also infodump a bit. Sometimes it's necessary, but trim it as much as possible. You do have a talent for filling up space--and I know that doesn't sound good, but it means you can have great control over your pacing, which is key.

I'm not sure if this is just an artifact of pastebin, but make sure you start a new paragraph when someone speaks. It really helps clear up where everything is coming from.

Oh, and adverbs! Try to avoid them. You'll notice that there's a lot of times where you can cut them out without changing the sentence's meaning. Unless you need them, do that, because they sound weird.

Make sure you keep the same tense. Less confusion that way.

Use more paragraphs and vary the length of your sentences so you can control the flow a little better.

Overall, pretty good! I look forward to more stories in the future.

>>
>>183194446
Sure, I'll deny it. I haven't actually done a post-by-post study to substantiate that, I doubt you have either, and I'm not aware of any objective metric for post quality anyway. I have been posting less since the tourney started, because I personally find the atmosphere distasteful (even though I've participated in every one), but that's just me.
I've noticed that some of the other regulars have been largely absent since it began, too. A lot less frownposting, Drew is still lost in the woods, Relicwebsanon seems to have fallen off the cliff, and only one new ninedots drawing in recent memory. But testanon is back providing quality research, some new drawfags have been cropping up, and that one guy with the racemod has been generating a lot of instructive failures (and successes, I'm not ripping on you, I've been learning a bit watching your progress). And we still have Max, for what that's worth.
I think bitching about things you don't like, arguing about development, and general shitposting are always around and are always going to be. Hell, this time last year we were having thread-long arguments about senshi/berserk posting. Just roll with it, man. Enjoy the good posts, and ignore or engage trolls as you please.

It's all about attitude. Observers (or perhaps it's just one guy?) are raging about >adamantine, and sure, it's not balanced--but the managers that have posted so far don't seem to care, even if they've sworn off it.

There's a lot of exaggeration, too. Herne got shot in the head--which is typically fatal.

Yeah... The only other thing I can think of is to build some sort of scaffolding above the aforementioned bridge, and then have Dump zones 1 tile above it where the dwarves can climb up and drop them.
Actually i take that back, since i dont think you can put zones over thin air. What you can do however is build a QuantumStockPileâ„¢ using a minecart, with the minecart set to dump the item (off the ledge). see pic related. I can break it down for you how to do this if you dont know already. this would permit your dwarves to automatically dump mass amounts of boulders without any input from you except the initial set up.

No it doesn't. The 'process plants' order is for turning plants to thread, 'process plants to bag' is for quarry bushes, 'process plants to barrel' makes dwarven syrup from sweet pods, and 'process plants to vial' is for making golden salve. Except for things that have to be milled or brewed, no plants need any further processing to be used. The issue with crops that had a 'plant' suffix being unusable was fixed back in 2014, but even then the farmer's workshop wasn't involved at all.

If she agrees we'll found a site in the woods and try and retire there. If not I'll quickly kill her, and then die killing as many goblins as possible.

if it leads to "want dorf, can't dorf" situations, then it is an objectively bad way of playing.

I did another test, this time with two groups of humans, one steel spears and the other with steel pikes, both of them fought against particularly large creatures (elephant men, ogres and giants) in individual combat, and after finishing I compared their results, which you can check here: https://pastebin.com/NaZTHbnr

Seems like the humans with steel spear performed slightly better than the humans with steel pikes in the first set, while in the other two sets the performance of both groups was very similar. It seems like the first set was the hardest one for both groups, that's strange, I didn't think elephant men would be that strong, they're on par with giants against these groups of humans, while ogres seem like the weakest.

that thing's a beast. if you have a squad with candy weapons they can probably deal with it. send in a random peasant or an animal first to make sure the gas doesn't just paralyze them or something
>>
>>183287182
Blunt weapons are the worst thing you could use, especially considering that momentum loss of an attack passing through tissue layers partly depends on a comparative density test, which native platinum will always do well in. Chopping pieces off of them with a battle axe or pick will be your best bet.
>>
>>183289051
You don't even need candy - steel should do fine against native platinum.
Imo though, it would be a better idea to pasture an animal as bait, then crush it in a cave in - or do what I'm doing and trap it for its toxic vapours.

>>
>>183292292
i hope toady fixes the military system eventually. it's kind of boring just having godlike legendary dwarfs enter a martial trance, letting them solo like 50 goblins with ease. formations would be dope, have a tightly packed group of speardwarfs and some crossbows behind them or something
>>
>>183277076
>>183292292
I still have no idea of how to balance my dog's military service.

That said, military dwarves are something you assign when you have so many migrants that you have to start looking for things to make them do, so you make a big room willed with upright wooden spear traps and then you throw them in, and then you have gods literally after ten minutes.

Minecarts help too.

>>
>>183296127
>Worked for me the last time I did it (danger rooms).
my money says last time was before 0.43.04.

that's when joint damage was implemented, and it was a major game changer. now a hit can damage you indirectly by bending the joint of the hit bodyparts, which means that full armour coverage doesn't make you invulnerable anymore.
>>
>>183296532
Danger Rooms still work by value of Armor + Shield + Dodge rolls. You just might actually hurt some dwarves in the process.
Either way the military experience system is pretty dumb. I'd rather just do Colosseum fights to train up than blatant exploits like Danger Rooms though.

My dick is diamonds, what's the tileset?
>>
>>183298068
>You just might actually hurt some dwarves in the process.
the joint damage system made the whole "getting hurt" part a lot less trivial, since any hit can now paralyse a dorf or disable their shield arm, after which they'll be helpless against all the other hits.

Not a thing that happened to me so much as a thing that just happens in my forts all the time.
I had this dog chained up by the trade depot and noticed it was distracted. I looked at it and it was covered in a bunch of different kinds of blood and a ton of scars. I thought about the life this little had lived and it made me sad; taken from its mother and shoved in a cage at birth. Trained to hunt at adulthood, the first interaction it'd had with another creature in a year. Then put on a chain, where once a year it watches a hundred or more dwarves walk past it without stopping to acknowledge it, and once or twice a year it sees horrific acts of violence happen around it. 7 or 8 years it lived in isolation on this chain, its only contact with another living thing was being attacked by a wolverine and then gored to death by a troll a few years later. I've put thousands of dogs through similar treatment in my forts. It's pretty depressing to think about.

>>
>>183318021
How high are their skills?

>>
>>183317682
You can, but they don't follow their assigned dwarves the way they're supposed to, so it's basically just allowing them to hang out in your meeting areas or follow their trainers like they would be anyway if they weren't confined.

>>183317674
I didn't say the dog was black. In fact, every dog whose color I've ever taken note of has always been a really unlikely combination of colors. Cats too.
>>
>>183318189
All through their carreers, meaning from recruit until legendary, without ever sparring with anyone else. The squads vary from 5 early on until 10 later. Complete gear. I usually put about 50% required to train at all times but most go even when they don't need to since I disable their labors.
>>
>>183318021
Yes. Just like in previous versions they'll do individual drills and lead/watch demonstrations until they've become sufficiently skilled, then they'll begin sparring.

check legends mode.

if you have dfhack, you can use open-legends to check them whenever you want.

also, the angel numbers are constant for each vault. there's always exactly 50 "beast" angels, 25 "soldier" angels, and one archangel.

lastly, you don't have to spoiler vault stuff here.

How do you guys organise your industry? I tried making separate quarters and super specific stockpiles with give/take orders from different workshops, but it proved too much of a hassle compared with what I got out of it.

I want to start a new fort but I don't really know how to make it interesting. Freezing/Evil/Savage etc. embarks all become the same once you've dug down underground.

Should I try doing an above ground fort? Is it fun?
>>
>>183323171
I think you're drawing an uncharitable inference. I mean, I recognize the post archetype you're referencing, and can see where the inference comes from, but anon didn't give any reason to think that's what he's doing. You could just as easily have inferred that he wants to have some division between social classes in his fort, which isn't necessarily edgy at all, and is a logistical project a lot of intermediate players make a go at before deciding (correctly) that it's a micromanagement nightmare.

>>
>>183326306
They release various iron bars that would otherwise block your path. iirc they're not really a problem as you can jump through them.
>>
>>183327432
Alright, weird I never noticed. Maybe I blocked the archangel off somewhere with them?
>>

Most likely you unlocked rooms you hadn't been to yet. But vaults generated with errors (often making retrieving the slab impossible) are a known bug, so maybe that's why you didn't see it.

They're supposed to be the supreme challenge but if you've already buffed yourself to legendary skill you can usually handle them with a little bit of care. They're also easy to kill if they're made of something dumb like vomit.

>Since the myth release will seemingly take a long time to finish, do you think that you will break it up into two or more releases?

>We hope so! The upcoming artifact release is already one of these, since it was all going to be lumped in together at some point. After the artifact release, while we're cleaning up bugs, we'll try to update the dev pages with clear divisions. There are some large unsplittable pills to swallow among the myth/magic stuff -- when we do planar maps for instance, that'll probably be six months all on its own, which is especially long when you consider how often I underestimate things. But a lot of good comes out of it, so it's worth it (seeing your dwarf armies/diplomats simultaneously with your fort, the afterlife, planar exploration, etc.).
Looks like Toady is going to update the dev page with info on how he's going to split the releases after he's done bugfixing Artifacts.

How do you think he's going to do it? It seems like a lot of the new features heavily rely on other new features.

Myth generator with minimal effects will probably come first, since prototypes have been shown already.

Then probably procedural magic which would tie into more mythgen effects. I'm imagining updates to religions will be a necessity with all the gods and wars in the heavens and such.

Planar exploration is gonna be crazy. I feel like the current, non-multithreaded game might not even be able to handle it.

I'm excited for the myth generator. He said he's going to add at least one world level event on the first release. He'll probably add in randomized races and creatures early since the framework is there.

I'm pretty sure planar exploration is just going to be planar shift rather than planar travel.
Aka, you just warp into the ethereal plane which looks similar to the normal world except colors or inverted and there's ghosts dicking around like you put on the one ring. And not literally traveling to entirely new different generated worlds/dimensions like the sphere or generosity, realm of the god of fire and fishing, elemental plane of hotdogs, or the fucking maw of chaos or daedric realm of prince whatshisface.

>Needing immortality to equal the elves
Elves sit in their trees meaninglessly, meanwhile humans and dwarves have done so much more with their short lives, humans will soon be space faring, I think that puts them above elves
>>
I did another test, it's the same as the spears vs pikes test, but this time I used a custom race of humans that have a size of 78000 and have their height and broadness modifier all set to 100, so that way there was no variation in size. I used this custom race because I wanted to see if making humans capable of wielding pikes with one hand would change things. You can check the results here: https://pastebin.com/LsKRCHsB

I'll post the observations in the next post.
>>
>>183390457
The results in the first three sets are not very consistent, in the first set both groups had a very similar performance (1 victory for the spearmen, one draw and one victory for the pikemen), while in the second set the pikemen won all three times, and then, in the third set, the pikemen won only once, and it was a very close victory, while the spearmen won twice, but the first victory was very close, just like the one of the pikemen. I am not sure if the spearmen and pikemen are at the same level, or the pikemen have a slight advantage. In the other three sets there the results are more consistent, in the fourth set the spearmen won twice, the first victory was very close, while the pikemen won once, and it was also a very close victory, meanwhile, in the fifth set the pikemen won twice and there was one draw, and in the third set the pikemen won all three times. So, the spearmen and pikemen had a similar performance in the fourth set, while in the last two sets the pikemen had a slightly better performance, I'm not sure if this means that pikes are slightly better in fights where both opponents have a full set of armor and have moderate/high combat skills but if they have no skills then they are at the same level, or if it was just the result of RNG.

Well, there is one thing that is certain, and it's that the large humans with pikes in this test performed significantly better than the normal sized humans with pikes in the first test, they are atleast at the same level of the large humans with spears, and they might even have a slight advantage, but I'm not so sure about that. I think this also confirms that the reason why the normal sized humans with pikes were performing worse than the ones with spears was that the ones with pikes had to worry about damage to both arms, while the ones with spears only had to worry about the arm that was holding the weapon and could ignore damage to the other one.

>Taverns which are buggy as hell and kill dorfs
the only bug is tavern keepers only targeting 1 dwarf for inevitable alcohol poisoning. you can prevent this by lowering or removing the lethality of the alcohol poisoning syndrome.

>Temples which have zero interactivity it's literally just open space to your dorfs where they go and kneel and ignore all furniture or features
dwarves still get thoughts from the furniture they pass close to, but you're correct that there's no functional traits to a temple like the library has, besides the "stand around and contemplate beliefs or pray to the gods" and of course the dancers option.

>Libraries which are neat
libraries are probably the best "new" feature, but getting them "working" takes a fucking shit ton of time to achieve unless you plan from the start for it. one bookshelf can hold like 1000 quires.
dwarves generally produce books at 1 per season (if at all) if they're completely untrained.
also since any dwarf that writes a book has a chance to write something about their values, and the competence of the writing improves the effect of the belief, it's possible to get a dwarf who "values knowledge" to pass on that value to whoever reads it.

It really isn't that bad, unless you're very hard of sight or something. The interface just takes getting used to, and once you have the hang of it it's like riding a bicycle. I can't think of any condition that would prevent one from playing DF if they can play other games; there's no sound required, it's not reflex-heavy, colors can be changed around if you're color blind, etc.

Does anyone have different sizes of the Curses font? The 800x600 seems to small, and the 1920x900 is to big. I also have 1600x1200, but that causes clipping text on Adventure Mode, but is otherwise usable. Anything in between?

Yeah I should probably see a psychologist because I've got brain problems
DF is interesting but I just can't get used to it by myself
would probably be better off finding some weirdo who will let me sit next to him and watch him play

you can set compat prefrences to "strike" and just walk towards an unconscience enemy whose armor is too tough for you to pierce
youll literally level up to legendary in like a minute, provided
- he doesn't wake up and kill you
- his armor doesn't break
- you don't somehow kill him in some unlikely and brutal manner
- your weapon doesn't break

Weapon traps do if they have shit components. I doubt anyone means a row of weapon traps by "elaborate death trap" anyway, it's literally as low-effort as a defense system can be.

He's got the concept cooked, at least there's that. Not him nor us know how it will all work out when he get it in the game. May go smoothly and fast (he already knows how to fix broken geometry, failing overlapping raws and other shit) or stumble upon fifty billions of problems and fps drops, making it a painful process. I think becuase his interest will be so fired up the madman will lock himself up from the rest of the world in a basement with his gear, battling god and himself, making the maddest mushroom shit ever.

This is the most ingenious software development model I've ever seen, closely followed by "leave making the game playable to modders".

>while he multithreads the game himself
Considering he still manages to make the most basic memory management mistakes, fail to detect them during testing and let them slip into two releases, Toady's attempt to multithread DF would result in a race condition hell with untraceable bugs and absolutely random segfault crashes.
I'd rater have half of the FPS but with some bare minimum of stability.
>>
>>183475842
Which is why I allowed him 4 years, I didn't say it'd be in good condition.
>>
funny fact: the people who call for open source so that the community can "fix" DF have no plans on fixing DF themselves. they're just convinced that someone else will do it for them, for free.
>>
>>183476126
What is it even programmed in? Fucking Assembly, seeing as Toady is an autistic savant?
>>
>>183476126
I've considered making an open source DF clone, but I don't think I'd be able to manage something this big. Also it kinda seems like a dick move.
I'd love to help if DF went open source though.

Fun thing I once did with a captured elf is assign her to a chain in my military prison area, strip off and dump all her clothing and weapon, then order a dabbling female hammerdwarf to attack her. I followed the fight blow-by-blow pressing the period button and checking the report. The moment elf collapsed unconscious I cancelled the attack.
