Taverns, libraries, temples. New personality system and AI upgrades. Procedurally generated music, poetry, and dance forms. Procedurally generated musical instruments. Sites can be built and claimed in adventure mode. That is all the important stuff.
>>
Reminder that the game in it's current version is the best it has ever been, that the procedural world generation aspect is the game's main selling point and is a valuable use of toady's time, and that the percieved quality of the old versions is mostly nostalgia for the buggy, unintentional, and imcomplete game mechanics, which would be the main source of complaints of the game today had they persisted to the present.
>>
>>183487342
You are mostly correct. The only disadvantages the current version has over the versions before DF2014 is the lack of difficulty of some invaders and little negative consequences of unhappy dwarves.

>>

that's buildup from three or so sieges, and my cavern entrance is across the valley so I don't have rampaging trolls and shit in my fortress. also much of that is goblin parts rather than residents
>>
for when my dorfs run out of bolts and start bashing with their crossbows, steel crossbows will do more damage than wood or bone ones, right?
>>
>>183487342
Reminder that procedural world generation is a waste of computation and dev labor when all it produces is thousands of dull near-identical books that don't do anything and teeming hordes of npcs whose history consists of moving somewhere and becoming a milker
>>
>>183504728
For blunt weapons, pretty much all materials are just about the same. Silver is the best but not by much, copper is surprisingly #2.
>>
>>183504861
What? I thought weight was a major factor in blunt weapons.
>sitting on heaps of silver I assumed was useless
Time to rev up those forges. Does material have any effect on damage dealt when firing bolts, or does that rely strictly on the bolt itself?
>>
>>183504801
just go back to whatevertower defense game you came from.

among thousand of generic colony management games, DF is the only one of its kind. why people want to change DF instead of just moving on to another game (which clearly are superior, according to their own logic) is beyond me.
>>
>>183504801
>the vast majority of pleabian peasants lead boring lives
>heroic deeds are rare and thus heroic
How is this bad.
>>
>>183505246
Also, reminder that Toady will not be able to combine Dwarf Fortresses moving parts into a reasonable simulation because he gets bored with what he's working on and abandons it to work on something else.
>>
>>183505392
If the vast majority of characters are literally whos why aren't they folded into the abstracted site population so you can have the actual named npcs be more likely to have things happen to them
>>
>>183505704

There's very little in the form of context. You will probably never find about those heroic deeds because they are buried in descriptions of cheesemakers getting their ears cut by dingos.
This is especially bad when it comes to names. Every time the outpost liaison comes he just dumps half a dozen names on me and all of them sound like the same shit. What IS Riversclothed? Why not display "the capital Riversclothed"? Why not let me see the nearby dwarven cities in the currently barren world/civs menu so I can at least pretend to memorize them? Why is legends mode so bad and why can't I open it without duping my save?

SemiFinals.jpg
26KB, 336x420px
Welcome back, my dear friends, to the semi-finals of the Third Dwarf Fortress General Tournament! Our last four remaining warriors have bested all who stood before them to reach their hard-earned place in the penultimate round of our illustrious blood rite. Despite this, only the final two survivors shall proceed, to be matched with each other in the Grand Finale. Be it Man, Dwarf, or Beastman, we shall know of our finalists before the moon has waned, and which of our champions shall perish, to be revived in the Battle Royale.
He-Man, Urist Dye-Maker, Hercule, and Herne. All master fighters, all expert warriors, and all shall kill or be killed tonight, all for your delights, and for Armok's red smile. Let the tourney...

Begin.

Being rather combat light this evening, I hereby ask whether any of our finalist's managers would like to step up, perhaps answer some questions regarding their choice of gladiator, their hopes and goals, or perhaps merely for some good old trash talk.
Seat yourself well and make yourself at ease, my friends. Soon enough, we shall have our two fights, and the blood we so desperately crave.

Now, our first fight features the Noble warrior He-Man, bold and blonde he is, wielding an Adamantine blade and girt only in the morbid mask of his past rival, Skeletor.

Dominating his previous fights with incredible swordsmanship, this hardy warrior has made it this far through strength, spirit, friendship, and through the cutting power of his steadily upgraded swords. Now, against another two-hander, will this hero of the people keep his wits about him and triumph? Or will the insane, hate-fueled force of the Mad Dwarf tear down this mighty warrior?

Urist Dye-Maker, mad and dangerous, has acquired a brilliant Adamantine cloak, shimmering and incandescent. Perhaps, in a very rare moment of semi-lucidity, the dwarf willfully chose the one thing capable of resisting an adamantine blade. Soon enough, however, the blue fabric may be stained with the blood of his adversary, and dyed in all the colours of death. That is, if he is triumphant.

Now, place your bets folks. Gather your plump helms, stake your wagers, and prepare yourselves for the Semi-Finals.

BEGIN!!!

This business is well ended.
My liege and madam, to expostulate
What majesty should be, what duty is,
Why day is day, night night, and time is time,
Were nothing but to waste night, day, and time.
Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit
And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes,
I will be brief: your noble son is mad.
Mad call I it, for, to define true madness,
What is ’t but to be nothing else but mad?
But let that go.

The fight begins, and immediately a screaming Urist charges at his adversary, bringing his steel sword down in a powerful blow, aiming to cut the human in half at the waist! He-Man deftly leaps back, landing on the balls of his feet, and brings his blue sword up in a horizontal parry, blocking another swing of Urist's blade with impressive ease. Furious and bellowing with rage, Urist readies another swing, his stout body coiled like a swing. But, suddenly there comes a flash of stormy blue from the eye-sockets of Skeletor's mask, a minuscule, almost imperceptible whisper, the merest flicker of azure, and...

Congratulations He-Man! In a shocking turn of events, you have slain the mad dwarf in a single blow without a single nick upon you! You have 230 points to spend on your upgrades for the next, and final, round. Good luck to you, and may your spirit (and blade) never dull.

Urist, rest not easy in the oblivion of death, for your ravening soul shall once more be unleashed on the world, should your steel win you the day in the battle royale. May Armok smile upon your past achievements, and bring strength to your sword.

Our next, and final fight of this evening is between the warrior-hero Hercule Poirot, Grand Master Maceman and champion of the greeks/belgians/humans/demigods, against the mysterious wild hunter Herne.

Hercule, seen as a bold and masterful champion amongst many of the crowd, is the favourite to win for most. His brutal dealings with prior rivals, and his proud disdain of the adamantine that all other champions wield, has earned him a spot amongst the most popular of all the gladiators. Will bronze and a lion cloak be enough to face the chilling foe before him? Or will this heroic warrior bring an end to the legend that is Herne the Hunter, and banish him from this place to never return.

This haunting and frankly, disturbing warrior, has become an almost villainous figure to many audience members. I must admit, ever since this gaunt warrior travelled south, there have been tales whispered. Of hangings and hauntings, of cows giving blood en lieu of milk, of many witcheries and hellish scenes in the forests at night. Perhaps, it was merely fate that decreed the role that each of these men should play, and that their paths should all lead towards each other in this arena.

Whatever our champion's desires, tonight they have only one duty. To slay their foe, or perish in the attempt. No mercy, no easy grave, only bronze, stained with crimson. Place your bets folks, we are about to discover our final champions.

The fight begins, and Hercule throws himself at his large, horned foe. His mace at the ready, and his oiled and well-muscled body poised for combat. His first strike is nimbly avoided, however, as Herne dodges aside, only to bring his pike up and straight into Hercule's abdominals! As the bearded man gasps and clutches at the grievous injury, Herne savagely slams his left hoof into Hercule's foot, pulverising flesh and sending Hercule crashing to the floor, unable to stand! Not beaten yet, the maceman lunges forward, but his blow is easily parried, once, and once more. Even as Herne retaliates however, Hercule rises to his knee and bats aside the pike, bringing his mace up and over to shatter the stone where Herne had been but a moment before. Now to the side of Hercule, the elk-man drives the pike straight into the fleshy part of his adversary's flesh, right to the bone! As Hercule groans and goes pale, he lunges forward to slam his mace into Herne's bicep, attempting to disarm him and send the dreaded pike clattering away. The wondrous cloak, however, prevents the mace from doing any serious damage, and Hercule is stabbed once more for his efforts! The pike goes deep, so deep that the blade sinks to the shaft, and sticks! Roaring and pushing through the agony, Hercule bashes Herne in the hand, but cannot land a solid blow. Herne merely shakes his numb hand, and, almost with a smile, wrenches the pike free. It is too much for the wounded Hercule to stand, and as Herne shakes the meat from his bronze, our brave human maceman falls to the earth, unconcious and bleeding out.
Eyeing his foe for a moment, Herne moves over and poises the spear right above Hercule's head. Pausing for a moment, Herne lets loose a low, animalistic noise, before sharply plunging his pike into Hercule's brain. Ignoring the shouting and roaring in the audience, the victorious elk-man shakes the blood and brains from his pike, before turning and leaving the arena.

Congratulations Herne! Through skill and strategy, you have defeated the fearsome demigod Hercule Poirot in battle. You have 215 points to spend on your upgrades for the next round.
Be not disappointed in death, Hercule. You have already proved to be a mighty warrior, and as such you shall be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming battle royale. Let loose your bronze mace, and return to the oaken club with which you began your journey.

And so concludes our Semifinals, folks. Next week, we shall have the Battle Royale, featuring all thirty of our fallen combatants fighting for their lives in a new and upgraded Arena! Larger, bloodier, and with only one survivor, this shall be most fun, yes, very fun indeed!

Thank you all for coming tonight, my dear guests. I hpe you were entertained, and have all left with a full purse (or lighter) with many a won bet. If not, well, there is always the final fight to watch out for!
Now, pay your respects to the glorious dead, and let us reconvene in a week, to enjoy the last of what this tournament has to offer.

Good night!

by the time herne got his first hit deflected by the cloak, hercule was already too wounded to realistically win the fight. the worst thing that could have happened if he didn't wear the cloak was losing one of two pike-arms which wouldn't stop him from winning.

Man, you guys sure get angry about this.

Here are my thought about the whole Herne and adamantine cloak debate: Is there a problem with adamantine cloaks? Yes, I think so, and the problem with them is that the level of protection they offer is too high, it's higher than an adamantine mail shirt, breastplate and greaves combined, if someone is looking for amor that gives the highest amount protection and coverage for the lowest amount of money, he will always choose the adamantine cloak, there is no reason to buy mail shirts, breastplates or greaves, they're the objectively worse option, even though just one of them costs more than an adamantine cloak and that's what I think the problem is.

And it's not something that affects the tourney only, it also affects the game in general, does it really make sense that an adamantine cloak offers more protections than a mail shirt, breastplate and greaves, all combined? Does Toady really want adamantine clothing to be just as effective as adamantine armor? Well, we could ask him. Anyway, I do think adamantine cloaks need a rebalance for the next tourney, and Tourneyanon's decision to double their price is a good start, it needs to be tested to see if that choice is good enough or not, but it's a good start.

Cont.
>>
>>183527068
Now, about Herne's manager, does he deserve the bashing? No, I don't think so, sure, he may have bought an item that is clearly unbalanced, but that doesn't make it invalid, the worst thing you could say about thing would be that his tactics are scummy, but still valid, and them being tactics is debatable, since his decision of buying the adamantine cloak didn't come from looking at the results of extensive arena testing with different armor combinations that showed that the adamantine cloak was objectively the best choice, it came from the observation of the performance of fighters wearing adamantine cloaks in previous tourneys, and that observation showed that those fighters did quite well, so that's why he decided to take the adamantine cloak, and that seems completely normal and fine, so I don't even think it's fair to call it a "scummy tactic".

Now, that being said, I hope He-Man splits that fucking elk man's skull in two

The thing is, investing all those points into adamantine cloaks is obviously way way way more cost-efficient than armour, but you gotta remember that's 180 points you can't spend on weapon skill, dodging, or even just fighter. You trade defense for the risk of your opponent simply outskilling you. Banning or making them too expensive is unnecessary, just make armour less expensive, buff shields or whatever. More options are always better.

Purple Fist was pretty cool and a more than worthy opponent. With no blood or organs to pierce, he was probably the single most dangerous opponent Herne could have faced in the first round. If Purple Fist wins the Battle Royale, I won't consider it a disappointment.
>>
>>183527948
>t. herne's manager
>>
>>183527948
I do think making the more expensive is necessary, if you were to leave it's price as it is, then you should make it so that an adamantine mail shirt, breastplate, and greaves costs less than 180 points, since the three of them combined still offer less protection, but that might make armor go from "too expensive" to "too cheap". So yeah, unless you increase the price of an adamantine cloak significantly then you're gonna have to decrease the price of armor significantly, perhaps too much, to make it balanced.

If I were you I would have added an amethyst earring or something after the fight (if you can even get one of those in the arena)

Any battle royale bets? I'm betting on the elementalmen. Their extra defence gave them an early advantage and if everyone's getting back to beginner gear, I believe they all have a pretty good chance.
>>
>>183529063
Here's the problem
A single adamantine cloak is better than full adamantine plate armor, significantly so
There is no price that adamantine cloaks could be set to that would balance them, they need to be banned outright
>>
>>183529072
Neither gems nor ornamental crafts are available in the arena, sadly.
>>
>>183529315
It'll be mostly the high defence or dodge opponents who survive en masse during the later stages imo, and so they have a statistical advantage for one of those types of gladiators winning.

Testanon did his stuff and proved it a few threads ago. Adamantibe cloaks are literally mithril cloth, without the encumbrance of armour.

I have to admit, it's pretty unreasonable that adamantine cloaks can deflect even the heaviest blunt attacks. Could it be a bug with how fabric armor transmits force?

Eh...

Anon I think you didn't read the description of my test correctly, in my test there were two groups, one wearing a standard full set of adamantine armor, while the others weere wearing a set of armor composed of parts that offered the highest amount of protection for the least amount of money, which were an adamantine armor, an adamantine hood, an adamantine pair of guantlets and an adamantine pair of high boots. Take a look: https://pastebin.com/YKuhgkiD

It's that in the observations I called the humans that were wearing the second set of armor "humans with cloaks", maybe that's what cause the confusion.

Punching can be quite effective. The "Kisat Dur" thread on bay12 has some decent information on it.

You'll still probably need a weapon. I'm guessing from his personality that he's a monk sorta dude, so a blunt weapon wouldn't be a bad choice.
>>
>>183505927
No, the majority of the world's population is abstracted, and most individuals don't exist until they're created on the fly for gameplay. You'll get random migrants and invaders this way, and many of the people you encounter in settlements in adv mode as well. Location visitors in fort mode seem to be mostly (or entirely?) made up of histfigs, though.
>>
>>183542390
>Is punching any effective in adventure mode?
more than effective
no weapon/armor runs kick ass
all you really need is a shield or two for blocking and a helm so you don't get brained
something to protect the upper-spine/neck also helps, but that's less important

Punching is ok, kicking is great when you can use it right, but wrestling is the shizzy.

Catch an incoming weapon by aiming a grab at it, then dodge in a direction of your choice so you aren't standing beside the target, you keep the weapon. I think this one was called Fadesomething?

Aim a grab at a weapon and jump through the target to make them dodge or knock them over and keep the weapon. Hawkwrath.

Do that at full running speed to make them grind their face and/or dick against the ground. Dragonfall.

Climb up a wall and let an enemy approach from below, grab them, then aim a takedown and let go of the wall. Skyhammer.

Aim a grab at an incoming punch or kick instead of dodging/blocking, and attack at the same time. Forget what that one was called too.

Hard to tell in this image but I was standing next to an ally and saw the other dude about to attack them so I grabbed a hand on a hunch and managed to do the action hero *reach over and intercept a punch meant for someone else* thing.

>>
>>183549194
Sall good
>>
>>183549224
It's kind of tricky to do, at least without sacrificing a miner. The safest way is to dig a channel from the level above the entire volcano that flows into a pipe with a (magma safe!) hatch cover to open and close it. Then build a cistern underneath and you have essentially a magma faucet. Make sure to turn it off between 4/7 and 7/7 depth, so you can keep your forges powered without flooding your fort.
>>
>>183549553
Also, dig the channel into the side of the volcano LAST. Build your faucet and cistern first, and place the hatch cover and hook it up to a lever (again, use a magma safe mechanism in the hatch cover) BEFORE you dig the channel that lets in magma.
>>
>>183546508
because the difficulty modifiers are usually bollocks?
I manage to hit enemies in '''''impossible''''' atacks with freshly created adventurers, and completely fail almost direct atacks

So I have a human mercenary that seems to regularly attack the yearly law giver who visits my fort.

However, this time I noticed the lawgiver who died had a human hair amulet. Does that mean he was a vampire?

I was pretty surprised to see my mercenary in the Hospital since he's a legendary fighter. That would make sense.
>>
>>183550309
Um... I'm not sure what you're trying to do. You need to dig into the magma FROM ABOVE, using the c(h)annel designation.

= = = = = !! = =
= X _ _ .. _ .. ..
= X = = .. = ~ ~
= X = = .. = ~ ~
= X _ C h = ~ ~
= X = = .. = ~ ~
_ X _ .. .. = ~ ~
= = = _ _ = ~ ~

Here's a really terrible diagram, sorry if it looks even worse in the post. This is a side view. X is stairs, = is a solid wall, _ is a floor, h is the magma safe hatch cover (linked to a lever), C is a constructed wall, and .. is open space. first build the pipe, THEN build the hatch cover (on any floor), then link it to a lever, then build the constructed wall to block off access to the hatch cover. You only need a 1x1 pipe, magma flows surprisingly fast through it. The cistern at the bottom can obviously be bigger, I just made it really small. The floor below the !! is the part you need to channel out after you've finished everything else; THAT's where magma flows over from the volcano into your faucet. And use the lever to turn it on and off.

>Make sure to turn it off between 4/7 and 7/7 depth, so you can keep your forges powered without flooding your fort.
Your advice is generally fine, but that in particular is wrong. Magma doesn't naturally have any pressure no matter how many z it falls or how many z of magma are sitting on top of it, so doing what you described doesn't have any risk of flooding.
>>
>>183551348
Nah, humans are okay with keeping trophies of fellow humans. I think that the civ your mercenary is from and the civ you get traders from are possibly at war, and your mercenary is fighting the law giver as an enemy of his civ or something.
>>
>>183552397
Ah, that's assuming that you're smart and make the pipe outflow horizontal at the level of your cistern, or wall it off so it flows directly into the cistern. The way I did it, the pipe just dumped it directly from the ceiling above into the cistern, so the magma could slide around on top of the level of the cistern and spill over the side. Nearly flooded my mine before I realized my mistake.
>>
>>183552397
>>183552620
I was able to do it the unsafe way (I also lacked magma safe materials for it). My dorf somehow evaded the lava bath as a bonus.

Overall actually pretty good. Some things to fix:

>general capitalization and spelling (proofread that shit)

>>183567951
Your sentence length and the variation of sentence length is fine. It's just adverbs you gotta watch out for (anything that ends in -ly). Oftentimes you'll notice that the writing will flow better by cutting out adverbs. It's not that big a deal, though--they do have their uses.

The length of the piece is fine, too. Just don't spoil the story before you get there.Like this sentence:

>...ideas in their heads that would lead to the distruction of more than just the last of the men.

You "give away" the fact that the necromancers are gonna kill everyone. Keeping it vague would make the reader more interested in finding out what happens. Like this:

>His servants became luxurious pets to these wizards, and they began to sow weeds in the minds of their masters.

The reader, unconsciously, goes "oh shit, weeds? That sounds bad, I want to know how this is all gonna play out."

Keep writing. I think you've got some talent for it.
>>
>>183568385
oh okay! thank you very much. this really cleared things up.

>keep writing ... youve got talent
thank you for this. thats super reassuring. maybe ill write more but honestly this was spur of the moment and my writing actually embarrasses me. so i guess we will see.
>>
>>183568716

Haven't played DF in ages. Has Toady added any benevolent supernatural visitors? Like a peaceful Titan that gives dorfs happy thoughts whenever they see it, a wizard who shows up and blesses a random workshop, a Forgotten Beast that barfs happy gas all over the fort, etc?

It's kind of lame that whenever something special shows up, it's always just something to kill.

there's been plenty of talk of that, and indeed they have; they used to be murdermachines, because bolt weight didn't really have any impact on damage, wood and bone arrows did maximum damage along with any other material. they were broken OP, and now they work like they should

in the last few years, there seems to have been a considerable brain drain there, with a lot of oldfags leaving and newcomers taking over.

if you go there, you'll see a lot of people using old memes like "OP carps" and "dorfs running out to grab socks in the middle of sieges", but when you check their profiles, you'll see that they only joined the community long after these things were fixed, meaning that they have no personal relation to them whatsoever. furthermore, a lot of these new players seem to be under the impression that these things are still in the game, suggesting that they spend more time reposting stale memes on bay12 than they do exploring the actual game.

bay12 is literally only a place where lolsorandom "geeks" come to post memes about how DF was years before they found out about it.

>bolt weight didn't really have any impact on damage
That's backwards, weight had a disproportionate impact on damage. That's why silver bolts were the goto back in 34.11, and remain a meme today. Ammo of all materials was overpowered then, except adamantine, which were nearly ineffective. After the nerf the hardness and sharpness of the material became much more important than the weight.

So I could really use a little help here.

I have a human vampire bard, he's already been convicted and thrown in jail once. While he was in jail I started constructing a special room to hold and transfer him. But he's out of jail now, sentence served and has killed two more dwarves.

My issue is when I try to convict him of the crimes, his name isn't on the screen of options, and underneath the cases for the dwarf murder, is his name but I can't do anything about it? How do I convict him so I can chain him up in a secret underground chamber?

I haven't had any births in my fortress for years, and I can't figure out why. My population cap is set at 100000, but even with a cap of like 999 or 600 they still aren't any births - I can get sieges, visitors, forgotten beasts and newly spawning animals just fine though. I have plenty of dwarves with plenty of rooms, and almost all of them have a spouse already. They don't idle a whole lot, but still, there haven't been any births in well over 5 years. I do have plenty of children still around, over a sixth of my whole population, but that wouldn't keep new births away, would it?
Any idea what could possibly cause this?

I had this problem with a really popular human bard, they kept surviving their beatings, so the next time they were in jail I had their cage installed in a remote fortification box and gave them the firing squad. you might just have to wait until they kill again, or see if they've petitioned you to stay, as that might be the requirement to get them listed, idk.

Well, if you don't use civ alerts and/or a standing order to forbid death items that's something that does still happen, for the same reasons it has always happened.
>>
>>183606367
this feels true, but i know that there a lot of posts from around 2007 which were also already in this style - people constructing narratives & stereotypes and being generally random rather than actually playing and discussing the game. i think DF itself has always inspired this "sense of wonder", and it's just that the internet itself has gotten more shit in the last decade.

They can use their shield to block any attacks. How effective they are presumably depends on various factors, like shield user skill, shield quality, the attacker's skill, etc. Note that they can even block dragonfire, even with a wooden shield, but it doesn't always matter even if they do.

I have, but only to raise it. Right now it's:

[BABY_CHILD_CAP:10000:100000]

Which should be fine, right? The first number is an absolute cap, and the second is a percentage of the adults, by default a meaningless 1000%. I've tried playing with these caps a lot and leaving the game running for a long time, but they don't seem to change anything. I don't think they're wrong anyway, they should allow tons of kids, right?

>>

>>
>>183613432
Yes, but they don't spawn on fort mode maps unless that was their destination. One of the hallmarks of this bug is that they leave on the same map edge that they enter from, usually on the same tile they began spawning in at. Also note, it only happens with siege forces, not scholars or bards or traveling merchants or refugees or migrants on their way to another site; any of the other "armies" that move on the world map (merchants actually don't yet, but you get the point). Also note that it happens with undead sieges as much as any other kind, and undead armies are never on the way anywhere except your fort, barring some rare buggy adv mode instances involving recently necroed histfigs.
The only things that show up on fort mode maps without having explicitly intended to go there are wildlife spawns, which are random creatures pulled from abstract pops whose movement isn't simulated on the world map.

>>183614059
It happens to a minority of fortresses, but enough that anyone who's played a lot of forts is likely to have seen it a few times. Once you've seen it on a fort once it seems more likely that it will happen again on the same embark, but that's just my impression.

I agree, but autists will give their lives to defend that shit.

the hyper-cancerous "D for Dorf" sections are somehow considered quintessentially dorfy, and thus sacred to the community. IMO it's outrageous, since they are created by retarded memesters who knew too little about the game to add any substantial knowledge, so they added stupid jokes they personally found funny instead.

apart from that, the wiki is pretty solid. contrary to the memes, it's relatively well up to date with the current version.

channel out the remainder of the map and then seal all the remaining dwarves of the world (already present) in their adamantine fortress-utopia under the magma sea, in hell. i was just finishing up on smelting all the adamantine blocks after hell was fully walled up and smoothed out when i noticed i could mine the slade blocks, i think it might be because there was a bunch of lava and water flow all over it. so now i have to change my designs before i can safely seal them in the blazing fortress, but after that's done i'll start an adventurer there, open the drawbridge to the rest of hell and start traveling through the underworld to the goblin fortresses to exterminate all of them. then it'll be the age of dwarves, and then i will start fortress after fortress with huge embark tiles to finish fully conquering the rest of hell, to exterminate all the demons. after that i can finally move on to create a new world, this is one is transplanted from 0.40.24 and i can't have books and libraries.

>>183620703
not even a little bit. it's still my very first fortress, so 3x3 central staircase from the very top to the very bottom, and lots of fully mined out levels on top of that. i use a ton of traffic designations and restrictions, but removing them has no fps impact whatsoever.

Another thing that could use a good write up is force translation. Some threads ago there was testing here that showed that armor user skill affects how much force from an attack is translated to joints, which is, AFAIK, information that doesn't exist anywhere except in an archived /dfg/ thread. You would need some data to work out the formulae for how force translation is determined for different attack momenta/armor materials/armor user skill levels, and would probably have to use dfhack to get to that data. Maybe you could collaborate with testanon on it.

He's got a 500+ pop fort and is digging out his entire map. I don't think fps is something he's concerned with.
>>
>>183622171
At that low an FPS every performance increase counts.
>>
>>183622025
>>183622171
i'm super concerned with fps, but there's still tons of jobs all over the map to do, and the paths to them are already very optimized. i think the pathing is pretty tame to be honest. most of the paths should be cached (right?), and i get absolutely no fps change whether my i5-2500k is clocked at 3.3 or 4.5 ghz. but when I raised my RAM's clockspeed by 300 mhz I got like 2 extra fps, so I'm thinking it's more the huge number of objects it has to keep track of. I guess it could be the cached pathways too, but locking off most of the fortress didn't improve that much either... right now the fps plan is to confine them all to hell, and i'm pretty far with mining out the top of the map already, so their already restricted paths are shrinking. i've also heard of some older bugs where huge fps drops came about after mining out the top levels of the map, i think because it really messed with pathing somehow. but yeah, fps aren't my primary concern, there aren't any dangers on the map and there's tons of parallel stuff going on many levels already, too much to keep track off without playing mostly paused.

>>
>>183626627
you have to take into account the sizes too, the L4 would need to be rewritten constantly from both RAM and the processor because of the small size, this already fucks with the latency advantage, while DDR4 has similar speeds if you get fast RAM, and it can store everything and send it directly to the processor

Okay, I figured out why my military wasn't sparring despite showing up for training. Turns out all I had to do was read the fucking wiki. They will only spar if they are active in the military screen [m]-[a].
>>
with all this talk of tilesets I have a question. I rarely bother with them as they're not worth the effort to set up every time there's a new version and usually fall out of date but I remember hearing about one that showed multiple levels, as in you could see what was happening a z-level down or two if there was open space above it. what's that one called? I think I recall it was a little more than just a tileset, maybe requiring some extra dfhack functionality or something.
>>
>>183637082
The only thing that could do that is Armok Vision, which is very very different from a tileset. Stonesense kinda comes close, but also very different.
>>
>>183637082
It's literally just putting some files on your DF folder
>>
>>183637182
no it was neither of those, not a visualizer but an ingame thing. I saw screenshots of it. it looked like any other tileset but you could see lower z levels in a darker shade beyond the cliff of the viewed z level
>>
>>183637082
Text Will Be Text, not a tileset, but like a way of displaying stuff. Helps for people with tilesets, but also multi-level view.

So turns out after a save/reload and a little wait, I was able to arrest him on a few charges and drag his ass down to a special chamber designed for him in Z-level 6.

I've made multiple dead end hallways, behind one is a false wall leading to his chamber. In front of the false wall is a nickle statue of a leech. I'm adding more statues and thinking of making the corridor a church. Meanwhile Jazzro Alcashem can slowly go mad chained up in a completely empty chamber for eternity.

This should be fun to check out later in adventure mode

Only your own citizens drink, except for visitors who will only drink if someone serves them. You could surround him with water, or the best booze in the fort for than matter, and he'll never touch a drop of it.

If you gave trolls that raw mid-game, would it work?
>>

No, you can't contaminate booze without getting it out of its container and into a puddle of vamp blood. If you just want to watch a troll get shitfaced and die of alcohol poisoning, and every troll that comes after try to do the same, then yeah.

Game world doesn't hold enough information for that.
