Well in MEA the conflict was still small scale since the villain was a rogue officer with about a dozen thousand troops rather than an eldritch horror or a galactic conqueror, and the stakes were limited to a few hundred thousand people spread throughout two cities and a bunch of hamlets rather than an entire galaxy of trillions. Well now that you mentioned it Neverwinter nights was a pretty bland game too. The only good thing about it was the multiplayer and the billion mods people were making but the single player is also one of the most bland experiences I've had in RPGs in general. I just didn't expect that much out of the game so I wasn't disappointed.

The thing is though that Shephard was basically chosen to become a space investigator and not the leader of men and the grey warden was basically put in a really underdog situation where they had to struggle to rise up and defeat the enemy. In Inquisition and Andromeda you're a complete nobody who gets put in charge of everyone completely out of nowhere because of "You are special" reasons and it just feels super awkward and clunky especially with Ryder who looks like he's 20 something with almost no actual experience other than some guard duty. At least Shephard was a trained elite officer of the army with contacts and training.

In-universe there's a pretty good explanation. The first mission you aren't the pathfinder, but his dad had it set up where on the event of Alec's death Scott/Sarah is the pathfinder. I think that's pretty reasonable considering he's been grooming his kids to take the mantle. I think the issue with Ryder suddenly being The Chosen One is that he/she never acts like it. They stay this snarky man-child no matter what dialogue path you take. Meanwhile you start ME1 as the big cheese but it makes sense because Shepard is a professional officer. I actually liked Andromeda but I think they royally fucked up the MC.

What did they do to the Character Creator, /meg/ ? I've spent hours on the single male customizable slot without being able to make anything good.
My potato PC can barely handle the prologue.

A few years before Shepard was on the scene, the Collectors had been buying up slaves and any source of genetic code they could find. A splinter cell broken off from Cerberus was taken on an unnamed world. In a strange turn of events, they were hired to round up slaves of all the races. Not liking other species, they jumped at the chance to rid the universe of the scum they hated and make a tidy profit at the same time.

One of the first colonies they found was a Batarian world. They hit the place hard killing most all of the adults, but leaving the children and easy targets alive to take back to their new friends. Balugha Boosh was an older teen taken. All was good until a Geth ship arrived. Fearing the worst, the humans attacked. Their arrogance got them killed and the slaves were taken by more abductors. But before anything else can be done a skirmish broke out on board the vessel between the heretic and non-heretic group of Geth.

Balugha saw her chance to side with those defending their release and fighting against their new masters. She figured out how best to take the Geth out while watching them fight each other. When she helped one of the synthectic beings a few others came to her defense against a large group turning on her. When the battle was done, the Reaper-loving Geth had been wiped out.

2 years later Balugha and some of her Geth friends found an abandoned Earth outpost on a backwater moon. They set up shop waiting and watching for the Reapers return. They began training the Batarian children, now teenagers, how to fight and how to win. When outposts started being attacked this group sprang into action, but the Collectors were hitting hard and fast. It was tough catching up with them, but they did on a few worlds. It was hard, though, people were confused. The Collectors, the Geth, young Batarians fighting, It was total chaos and no wonder the galaxy had no idea that this group existed.
