>>
>>182750084
I have a theory.
After the patreon money started rolling in, Threetoe was finally getting enough of Toady's money to outsource Toady's diaper changes to cheap immigrant laborers. With a steady stream of mexican changing ladies to choose from, and the increased institutional hostility to illegal immigrants brought in by the recent regime change, it was only a matter of time before one desperate enough to marry him for citizenship came along. In a few years we'll see a development slowdown after the anchor baby is old enough for mamacita to start working again, she divorces Zach, and Toady's diaper changes become less frequent and efficient while Zach shakes the rust off.

Dogs and crabs are not equals. Dog's are intelligent. They have personalities, emotions, hopes, fears. They're special. And Wilbo was special even among dogs. Crabs don't have personalities. Sometimes they have knives, though, so I guess that's something. A cursory image search suggests that it's a more common phenomenon than you think.

This is a Tourneyanon's corpse. All craftsmanship is of the highest quality. On the item is an image of a crab in adamantine. On the item is an image of an elk man in balsa wood. On the item is an image of a copper arrow in steel. The copper arrow is impaling the crab. The crab is screaming. The elk man is laughing. This relates to the slaying of Stabo the Crabo by Herne in the late winter of 270.

The item is decorated with spikes of crab leather.

Alright everyone, I'm not dead. However, I'm still awaiting Steve the Wageslave's upgrades for this round. There is still the problem of the possible remake between Steve and Ulric. I've done tests since last time, and Ulric actually had a much higher chance of winning the fight between them. The other fights are more or less ready, but I want to post them all together seeing as there's only four.

Now, I'll let you guys decide. Either we hold a rematch here and now between Ulric and Steve, where the winner moves on, or I leave it and wait for tomorrow. Should the winner (or just Steve, if everyone decides that) fails to post their upgrades by tomorrow night, I'll run their fight with their current equipment.

Probably should have posted this yesterday, but it was a national holiday so I got drunk and didn't visit the general (sorry).
>>
>>182776931
Adamantine crutches are impossibly light, anon. You realize, don't you, that your hospital is now no longer a place of healing, but of enhancement. Its wielder will move faster than an ordinary Dorf, it will do more. It will be more.

Huh, I hadn't thought of it like that. Actually, that fits the theme of my fort rather well. I'm currently going for a "pharmaceutical industry" : collecting forgotten beast, necromancers, and so on to find interesting ways to combine their effects. Super enhanced bio-dorf may be coming soon then.

Oh nice, I ctrl-fed every thread and still couldn't find it.

Now, the question remains as to whether Steve and Ulric should have a rematch. Either way, seeing as I'll need some time to write up the fight between Steve/Ulric Steve/Hercule, I'll leave the actual quarterfinals until tomorrow.

>>182778148
I feel bad about making an error with the original fight, but I still think everyone in the Battle Royale should start with their vanilla gear. The only ones I might allow to make some changes would be JC Denton and/or Wilbo.
>>
>>182778476
>whether Steve and Ulric should have a rematch

Eh, what's done is done, IMO. When I DM, if I fuck something up, I avoid retconning or re-rolling unless I caught it immediately.
Instead I'll just admit I fucked up, and we'll leave it as-is and I'll just try not to fuck up next time.
I guess what I'm saying is that I'm not a fan of the "undo" button.
>>
>>182777436

Guy with the Batwoman adventure companion who tried to fly to the moon here.

>>182726328

Well, the wiki's "your companion will become a * on the map and try to meet up with you when you travel away" thing didn't happen.
Removing FLY from the raws didn't seem to work, I think it only works on new bat-people you meet.
Tried yelling and stuff, nothing worked.

What I had to was get a dfhack script called "teleport," reveal the map so I could see her (she was too high to see otherwise) and get her unit id, then use the teleport command to bring her down to earth. Then she's just like "Oh, hey, what's up."

Friggin' crazy bat people. If there'd been any humans on that island I started on, I'd have taken them as a companion, but noooooo. I had to wind up with a buggy flyer.

There's nothing munchkiny about it. Adamantine clothing is a poor use of points, it's only marginally better than other clothing.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Armor_token#STRUCTURAL_ELASTICITY_WOVEN_THREAD

>>182781610
Have to be a lot bigger for it to matter. A creature large enough to benefit from extra-thick clothing would hardly have any points to spend (see the elephant man in the first tourney), and would receive the same benefit from clothing of any material.

So basically what you're saying is that you would have been alright with Stabo buying three adamantine cloaks to become invincible.
>>
>>182795030
Nah, armor is useless as it is. Adamantine existing just means that Master Dodger + high weapon skill + candy weapon beats armor users every time.
>>
>>182795030
Just a coincidence that the last tourney winner had an adamantine cloak. Adamantine cloaks which ALSO deflect adamantine weapons just as well as any other material. Yep yep.
>>182795208
>spending 300+ points on dodge to still be fucked the moment a hit lands on you is superior to spending 180 points to become invincible to anything that actually hits you

Armor cost should be reworked, right now there is not much of an incentive to go for armor, with the exception of an adamantine cloak, which is too effective for how much it costs.
>>
>>182795298
There's no way steel armor + a functional level of armor user is cheaper than a really high dodging skill.
>>
>>182795208
Armor should still be made cheaper, imo. Right now it's not worth considering really.

Before the tourney even began people were running arena tests and looking at creature raws to figure out point assignments. During the tourney a bunch of people were playing around with raws and arena tests and posting their observations, to the point that the semi and final rounds were pretty much known quantities before they even happened (for Sten at least), which in turn led to weeks long discussions on how to alter the point-buy system to be more fun and fair, and the most extensive series of arena attribute tests that I've ever seen (testanon kept the results in a pastebin if anyone has it).
The meta aspect has been a part of the tourney since the beginning. The only reason people are bitching about it now is because everyone's pet memeable competitor lost.

In my own little mind, I think of Trihardin as a Kenshiro. He's actually more of an Armstrong, as Armstrong really tries hard. Kenshiro tries hard to, but he's no McHuge.

So i built the dam to create artificial lake and I'm pumping the water out. However process is really slow. this is how it should go or is water somehow flowing into the lake? I even regretted raising such an army and wanted to just adventure normally without having to bother about rest or sustenance, but the skeleton army kept following me no matter what.

I tried to get them killed (permanently) by walking into all kinds of hazards but they would even bare-knuckle (pun not intented) an entire night troll family to death.

I finally got rid of them now. I guess I'll try to get steel weapons or something.

Do merchants ever have anything worthwhile? I've kept collecting gold from corpses, but they always sell copper crap and I'm fully encased in quality iron.

I'm thinking of deep sea diving if I ever get to become a vampire or don't need to otherwise breathe. That'd be a nice thing to do.

Give me some fort ideas/challenges. No megaprojects please.

My fort process has become almost too automated. I just can't lose. I resort to gimping myself by not even using cage traps and just fighting whatever's coming at me. But still it feels like a chore to start over again and again when the FPS death hits. I want to lose. Die a glorious death.

I already tried sinister embark once. I got wiped out instantly by an evil cloud that turned everyone into zombies. That was not nice.

I also embarked near a Tower. That was a little more interesting, but they never sieged more than once. I guess the Necromancer got killed in the first attempt.

How's hermit forts? As in playing Fortress mode with just one dwarf? A snorefest?
>>
>>182821646
Select some dorfs (preferably nobles) to live luxuriant, stress-free lives free of work and surrounded by beauty. But with the other dorfs just treat them as subdwarven and entirely expendable. Just do things as normal but with no regard for safety. Gotta pump lava? Keep throwing people at the problem until the survivors finish it. Someone outside the gates during an invasion? Tough luck, peasant. Make sure everyone but the nobles are miserable and constantly working. Keep doing so until the system collapses.

many memes on bay12 are generally frowned upon here (i.e. !!FUN!!, !!SCIENCE!!, everything encased within !!x!!). other memes, like "dorfyness =/= psychopathy" aren't really frowned upon here, but I see anons questioning them a lot more often than on bay12.

furthermore, bay12 seems to have an affinity for facebook-tier humour (i.e. #lolsorandom). this is probably the primary givaway for bay12ers who posted in connection to this tourney.

jokes aside, you're wrong on this one.

I was just stating the general opinion. the few times I've seen someone post !!FUN!! or !!SCIENCE!! in the general, they've done it mockingly.

the !!FUN!! meme is outdated, since the game isn't that hard anymore (not complaining, just saying).

the !!SCIENCE!! meme is misleading, because it implies that DF is some huge mystery box that we don't know anything about. that may be the case for newer players, but for the community overall, the game mechanics are very well known.

>>182834309

When generating a world for Fortress Mode, does the history length really matter? The only thing I know it does in a practical sense is that long histories kill off the shitty forgotten beasts made of steam that die in one hit.
Then again I've also heard long histories cause more FPS drops.
Any input here?
>>
>>182835224
It depends on world sizes. If you've got medium history and a large world, you'll end up with a lot of distinct and living entities to track, which can be a strain.
>>
>>182834746
Why... why do you keep on making those images? Is that supposed to be funny? You keep taking random quotes from /dfg/ and mspainting them on random stock people. Is there something I am missing here? Is this one of those shitty "ironic" memes?

The only people reacting negatively to ‼FUN‼ and ‼SCIENCE‼ are a bunch of autists. The game is still a nightmare if you embark in an evil reanimating biome or you run into reanimating caverns. The AI is barely understood and neither are much of the combat physics. Sure the game is not hard for someone who puts days worth of time into learning the mechanics and planning cave in traps and efficient industries or just picks an easy embark but the only way the game has become less difficult is the lack of tantrum spirals which can be easily modded back in to the game.

fairly straightforward things I've asked this shitty general and nobody has been able to answer:
*what's the range at which siege operators run away (gave me wrong info)
*effect of agility on melee combat (gave me contradictory info)
*does armor user affect melee combat or only speed? (nobody had any idea)

Just because a) nobody bothered to answer you or b) somebody was wrong about something doesn't mean these aren't known things. Hell, most of it is on the wiki. /dfg/ isn't your game manual. I know the answers to all of those but one, and check this out, I'm not going to answer any of them.
>>
>>182835516
I can answer a few of those. Agility effects attack speed, attack recovery, parrying ability, and general movement speed. It is the most useful of all combat attributes. Fighter governs all melee attack capability and defense capability except for dodging.

It doesn't even do that. FBs' materials aren't accounted for in worldgen battles at all, and since 40.16 there's been a massive bias toward attacking beasts so they almost never die outside of player intervention anyway.

wiki only mentions agility affecting movement speed
>*does armor user affect melee combat or only speed? (nobody had any idea)
wiki only mentions armor user affecting movement speed and exhaustion
>*what does fighter do? (faint nebulous idea nobody has been able to pin down)
wiki literally says "no idea but it's better than not having it"
>*materials to use for ranged ammo (contradictory answers)
wiki is outdated in this regard ever since ammo was made to use sharpness again
>*the existence of stone pots which apparently two thirds of this thread had no prior knowledge of
free space

>>
>>182835934
Those questions were not so basic that we should refuse to answer them. Many of them are on the wiki but some of them are not and many of them that are on the wiki are poorly worded or difficult to find. Hostility to people showing the smallest amount of ignorance to answers does not do anything for the general. The only reason to refuse to answer questions is to discourage laziness.

Created wealth is a trigger for invasions at certain thresholds, like population. I don't know the specific lines off the top of my head but I believe they are in the raws alongside the population threshold.

Fighter, from my anecdotal experience, transfers at least to all combat skills.

A situation from my most recent adventurer:

>master fighter
>novice kicker
>novice whip user
>can regularly hit "difficult" kicks and whips, and sometimes "impossible" kicks (but not "impossible" hits with weapons, even swords with my legendary +2 sword skill).

Can't comment on the effects on dodging, since I started at Expert. Something to check in Arena.

Both wealth and population triggers for entities are presented on a scale from 0 to 5, which doesn't mean much until you read the wiki.

I'm not being hostile, I'm being honest. Anon is extending his experience on /dfg/ of not being given information to a generalization that the information doesn't exist. for example, I'm a big fan of both of the Everblue games. they both got butchered by the gaming press for being slow paced, boring, and lacking any real challenge, yet I've put hundreds of hours into them.

it's the same with DF. DF isn't hard, and it isn't always eventful, but there are a lot of comfy details that fuel my autism. just following a single dorf around as he finishes up some work, hits the pub, grabs something to eat and finally goes to sleep is one of the comfiest things I know, and DF is the only game that lets me do it.

I didn't say that. You're talking to more than one person.I think the science meme is bad for completely different reasons.
I do think some of what you asked is common knowledge, and some of it probably isn't. Irrespective of that, all of it except (possibly) the specific mechanics of the fighter skill are known within the community, whether broadly or not, and the fact that nobody answered you or someone gave a wrong answer isn't proof of the contrary.

Experiences with Tower neighbors?
I remember reading they're not very fun ("fun", not "!!FUN!!") because they're pretty much impossible to manage via military so you just end up having to make a ton of traps/drawbridge cheese to deal with them.

not who you're responding to, but the guy who asked the questions was clearly passive aggressive, and heavily implied that the community was unhelpful, and that all the resources for knowledge about DF sucked. there is one very vocal anon who is convinced that the game was at its best back when it was 2d, and that all updates since then are just bloat.

Oh yeah, I can imagine they'd be fun in Adventurer mode which I don't play. I hate them so much in dorf mode though.
They're buggy, they suck my FPS dry, they leave holes in the ground (especially if they catch fire fuck them), they give way too much wood so I end up only chopping like half a dozen, I hate how they reveal their roots and the tiles continue to be revealed after you chop them, I hate how they seem to permanently stain bridges, I hate that shit gets stuck in their branches.
I fucking hate underground trees now and how they make steep caverns impossible to move through without digging everywhere and cave monsters can't even find you anymore because they don't path to you thanks to the stupid tree branches covering the rampways.
I hate that trees consistently grow underwater in cavern lakes now and they're a fucking childbirth to get rid of.

Does root ESP sound realistic to you?
Do apricot leaves permanently staining all bridges in real life?
Are there any mushrooms that grow fully underwater?
>>
>>182840880
Well I've already made 9 races so far. If you download the mod, you can check out the lore I have wrote for all of them.

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=164070.0

But the ones I'm adding will probably be included today or tomorrow. In addition, every entity will get their own unique language.

But the three being added are:

The Joghadai: A race of 4 armed giants dedicated to forging masterworks, who also see the world as just another untempered object to be forged into their vision of perfection through holy conquest.

The Baoyo: A race of hairless rodents who fled from the underground due to cramped living space and disease, who have now industrialized and wish to claim their place amongst the surface-dwellers.

The Xing: A race of wasp people who live in massive forest-hives in the swamps, love poetry and the spoken word, and also see independence as abhorrent and wish to see the entire world subjugated under their rigid caste system.

>>
>>182841071
>Do apricot leaves permanently staining all bridges in real life?
Stain steel brides*

Also as someone who has personally cut down three trees, leaving holes is as far as realistic as it could get. Tree trunks are an absolute fucking bitch to get rid of, you have no idea. It's where the expression to be stumped comes from, you know? When building railroads they would fucking blow up the stump with dynamite than try to remove it, and my back agrees. Shit doesn't just disappear after you cut the trunk.

A lot of wasted points there.
You get appraisal for free when you trade. A single point of record keeping makes such a negligible difference in speed that you would never know the difference. Taking medical skills at embark is a waste, either they'll rust to uselessness before you need them or something will have gone horribly wrong very early, in which case 99+% of the time another military dwarf would've been more useful. Plus you're highly likely to get better doctors in migrant waves than it's even possible to buy at embark. Putting mechanics on your armorer gives you a moodable skill to compete with the preferred one. You're better off giving that dwarf a nonmoodable domestic skill, or making him you broker if you insist on spending points there. I like to bring at least one dwarf with farming and one with either cooking or brewing, and though they're nkt essential they're definitely more useful in an early fort than a dedicated doctor or broker.
>>
>>182843839
Oh, and even if appraisal wasn't free, all it does is allow you to see the value of goods in the depot. It doesn't affect the results of trading. The first level is the only one that has any effect at all. If you want better trading results put points in negotiator instead.

Adamantine cloaks are ridiculous, they're more effective at stopping blows than an adamantine mail shirt, you can still do damage through an adamantine mail shirt with a platinum hammer, but if you try to hit someone with an adamantine cloaks the attack almost always get deflected without doing any damage, and a cloak covers more and is cheaper than a mail shirt, so there's no reason to take one.

Literally all you need for max protection is an adamantine cloak, a pair of adamantine gauntlets (or just adamantine gloves, since adamantine clothing is just as effective as adamantine armor), a pair of adamantine high boots and an adamantine helm.

Alright, I'm here, but I'd like to talk about a few things first.

Please don't harp on about campy choices where the managers are concerned. I made some balance changes to the doc at the start in order to try even out armour and dodging, but it was clearly not enough. I won't change anything now that the tourney is already in full swing, however, but please don't blame the managers for choosing the optimal builds for their fighters. If anything, blame me and my shitty balancing for not accounting for it.

Also, while Herne's weapon swap is controversial I'd like to chime in and say I have no problem with it. It was a clever idea and it paid off, without any need for "raw-diving" as some people have called it. I won't say that it was the most fun way to do things, but it's completely fine within the rules and the dude played fair.

Thirdly, if (and right now it feels like a really big if) I ever hold another tourney I am definitely not going to be doing it over several weeks. The whole thing drags on and really shits up the thread, which is absolutely not what I wanted. So far it feels like the longer it goes on the worse it gets, and that's pretty shit tbqh. Now with that out of the way, let's keep going with a more relaxed atmosphere, and try to cool our collective autism, eh?

Welcome, beardlets and gentledwarfs, to the quarterfinals of the Third Dwarf Fortress General Tournament!
It is to my great pleasure to be able to give you the chance to see once more witness these mighty warriors open their hearts, flex their biceps, and spill their blood all for your entertainment, and, of course, for the chance to call themselves CHAMPION OF /DFG/!!
Our remaining gladiators have defeated many fearsome opponents in single combat (well, in Urist's case, single versus double) and
have accumulated glory and scars aplenty. However, the greatest prize of all is yet to be won, and so fight they must.

But first, let us all take a step and reminisce, not just upon the humble beginnings of each of our captivating quarter finalists, but also the stalwart men and women who have perished in their wake. For despite the shame of loss and the pain of defeat, it takes a certain type being to willingly throw everything they own into the crock of destiny, and risk all upon victory or death.

The horn blows, and Urist swings immediately at Trihardin, aiming to cut down the burly human at the knees. Instead of simply moving back to avoid the large blade, Trihardin vaults right over his stocky foe, landing behind Urist and punching him in the foot! Ignoring the attack, Urist moves with incredible speed and spins around to plunge his sword directly into Trihardin's arm, cutting deeply into the flesh. As he ducks under Trihardin's retaliatory swing, Urist wrenches his sword free only to throw himself forward! Urist collides with Trihardin, his squat frame smacking into the more slender human and bowling him over, impaling Trihardin's leg even as they fall over! It seems that the fight is all but finished, as a bloody and mutilated Trihardin grows weaker, his blows swinging wide and unable to cause any damage. Conversely, every swing of Urist's blade brings him closer to death, as first his foot is cut off, and then his arm at the elbow. While writhing on the ground, Trihardin is stabbed right in the midriff, and as Urist savagely twists his blade and rips it free, the guts and innards follow! Nonetheless, the indomitable warrior fights on! Avoiding another swing that would have parted his head from his shoulders, Trihardin lands two solid blows on the dwarf's body! In vain, however, as the brilliant weave of Urist's adamantine cloak absorbs the momentum. Raising his sword high, a scream is torn from the lips of the mad dwarf, and in a flurry of swings, Trihardin is struck three times. The first blow rips through the flesh of Trihardin's hand, severing the nerves and muscles within. The second is a powerful strike from the dwarf's solid hand wrapped around the hilt, slamming into his foe's side, and the third is a devastating slash to the chest, parting skin, muscle, fat, and bone to pierce the human warrior's heart. Trihardin's face grows pale, a faint smile flutters about his lips, and then, he is no more.

Congratulations Urist! You have finally accomplished what no other weapon-user has done before. Slay the McLargehuge! You have 242 well-earned points to spend on your upgrades for the next round.
Well, Trihardin has been finally knocked out of the main event, and his only hope to finally git gud lies in the Battle Royale. There is no shame in his defeat, however. The man has already surpassed what no one else has done before: Slaying two armed and armoured foes with nothing but cloth pants and iron determination! This fan favourite is sure to have a steady backing for his time in the Battle Royale.

Our next fight features the brave, heroic, handsome He-Man against the fiery, hot-blooded, "fire-based pun" Lava Lad!

He-Man has proven himself not just a pretty face, but a more than capable warrior in his own right. After the defeat of Skeletor at the hands of the Juggernaut, this once cheery and easy-going man adopted a sterner, grimmer look, akin to the faces of the old legendary barbarian-kings. Equipped with Skeletor's mask and the near-magical properties of an adamantine blade, there is no doubt in my mind that this fighter has a much more frightening aura about him compared to his initial appearance.

Lava Lad has also done very well. Preferring to fight with only his fists, this masked vigilante represents the underground denizens, and so far has brought them much glory indeed. His previous bout against Mr Worldwide showcased a much more brutal side to him then previously seen, as he mercilessly shattered bones and splattered brains with a coldness uncharacteristic of a so-called "hero".

Regardless of the ethics and morality of our "heroes", we are more than happy to have them face off in our arena. Without any more interruptions, let us place our bets and ready ourselves for more bloodshed. Begin!

In a flash, Lava Lad initiates the melee with a rapid punch to He-Man's knuckles, clearly aiming to remove the threat of the gigantic sword before the fight can even begin. This precipitation is almost his undoing, however, as He-Man pays no heed to the pain, and brings his blade up, aimed right at his foe's head. Jerking back just in time, the plucky fist-fighter is merely scraped across the jaw! This first attack proves to be prophetic of the next, as He-Man lands another blow, the sword cutting straight through one of Lava Lad's gauntlets to shear into the obsidian crust! Leaking magma yet still full of fire, Lava Lad darts forward and a steel-clad foot smashes into the human's left hand, pulping it into a mess of broken bone and flesh! Now holding onto his sword with only one hand, He-Man grimly adjusts his grip, and attacks. Before Lava Lad can dodge backwards, the sword cuts into his remaining hand, tearing through the steel with ease to render the molten stone useless. Now forced to fight only with his feet, Lava Lad is hard-pressed to land a solid blow, his kicks having but a fraction of the devastating power of the elemental's fists. He-Man presses his advantage, actually grabbing hold of a chunk of obsidian and wrenching it loose! As the two fighters struggle in hand to hand for a moment, He-Man who breaks away, holding his sword such that his next swing lands devastating force! Desperate, Lava Lad braces himself, but too late! As the blade smashes into his feet, Lava Lad is sent crashing to the stone floor! Cracked all over and with magma pouring from the crevices all over his body, Lava Lad weakly kicks at He-Man, who roars with righteous fury and brings his sword blazing at his foe in a final swing. Cutting through stone, steel, and fire, the shimmering blade goes cleanly through. There is a moment of pure silence, then the faint noise of obsidian shattering against the ground, as Lava Lad's head, still wearing it's mask, falls to the earth.

Congratulations He-Man! With the slaying of the second of your elemental foes, you have a very respectable 310 points to spend on your upgrades for the next round!
Return to the earth and fire for now, Lava Lad, but be prepared for your return to fight in the Battle Royale, where you may once more sally forth to bring honour to your people.

Our next fight features the aptly named Gorilla with a Gun, expert marksman (marksape? Marksrilla?) against the skilled and deadly Herne, the elk man.

Considered by many to be the underdog in his fights, Gorilla with a Gun has shocked his doubters and gained fame aplenty for his surprise victories, first against Urist McNudist, and then against The Gladiatrix. To many, he is still the underdog in his current fight against the crafty and calculating mind and blade of the elk man. And yet, nothing has stopped our large sharpshooter yet, not dodging, shield nor armour. The only question is whether Herne's newly acquired cloak shall provide as much protection as he hopes, or whether he shall be shot full of quarrels before taking a single step.

With his surprising switch to the bow granting him victory over the fearsome Stabo, Herne has now set aside the string to once more pick up the pike. Armed with bronze and cloaked in adamantine, this warrior is once more ready to take on his opponents in close quarters. Perhaps, now that he has some experience with ranged weapons, this mighty fighter will have a plan to avoid being as shot full of bolts as a certain knife-wielding crab was not long ago.

Now, my friends. Place your bets, gather your coin, and seriously, try to avoid falling into the pit on the other side of the arena (It's where Neil keeps the organ disposal zombies and spare tourneyanons in case of sudden death).

Let the fighting

The cloak will deflect all hits that hit the parts that it covers, but there might be a chance that the force of the blow could pull a limb and cause some damage.
>>
>>182889970
For a creature as big as an elk man the pull just bruises the muscle, no real damage. Even then the cloak just magically absorbs a platinum warhammer and all the momentum from it, like, 80% of the time or more.

Unsurprisingly, it is GwaG who initiates the battle, with a crossbow bolt sent flying as soon as the horn blows! While the ape's aim is true, Herne gathers up his marvelous cloak and shields himself, deflecting the splinter of copper aimed at his chest. Rushing forward Herne is struck once more, yet the copper cannot pierce the adamantine at all! Now right in the gorilla's face, Herne swings his pike with a wild rage! Three times he hacks at GwaG's feet, although only one of his strikes gets past the iron boots. Before he can do anymore however, the ape flings itself away and fires it's crossbow. The bolt speeds past the fluttering cloak, and in a masterful display of marksmanship embeds itself in Herne's head! Although his skull is thick enough to withstand the bolt, Herne is sent staggering back, clearly concussed! Lurching forward, Herne tries to stab at GwaG's feet, only to be shot in the head again! Now bleeding heavily and half-blinded by the blood, Herne roars and charges headfirst, slamming his antlers into the soft belly of GwaG! The two fighters tumble away, leaving a smear of blood on the floor, and Herne manages to impale his enemy in the leg as GwaG attempts to rise. Now howling and baring his teeth, the gorilla raises it's crossbow only for the wooden shaft of Herne's pike to slam into the side of his head! Tumbling away and with a serious concussion, GwaG is trampled and torn at by the elk man. Horribly wounded, GwaG is in no shape to fight back, as the crossbow clatters to the floor. Showing no mercy, Herne brings the blade of his pike upon the gorilla's skull again and again. Blood splatters the earth, gore smears the bronze up to the shaft, and Herne's bloodshot eyes stare down at his foe until finally, the blade bites deeper than before, and Gorilla with a Gun shudders and lies still. Leaving the pike buried deep in the ape's skull, Herne turns to the raucously divided crowd and bellows a challenge, his azure cloak swirling about him.

To be fair, previous tournaments were a round shorter, this would have been the final round making this adamantine shit truly end tier.

Nah man, I definitely need to nerf them. Annie Mae won, (not without some serious wounds) but they trump armour in just about every way.

Also what this guy said >>182892878
Combatants are so stacked with points by now that adamantine isn't that crazy a purchase.
>>
>>182892740
I think the problem is with cloak alone, most races can't even afford anything candy with their starting points. Adamantine is fine in the tourney, stop limiting it for no reason.

>>
>>182893238
At this point, I'm not banning them, nor changing their costs. While they are undoubtedly op as of this tourney, I think you're still giving them a bit too much credit. They can prevent a lot of damage, but people can and do get injured while wearing them.

>>
>>182893258
Yeah, you'd have to just ban all adamantine clothing, it's too effective.

A question for tourneyanon, if I wanted to buy an adamantine robe, how many points would it cost, assuming it would be normal robe cost x12?
>>
>>182893258
the cost of covering yourself in all adamantine, without an all compassing piece of clothing like cloak, is pricy enough to be justified with how it is currently.

Nothing you can possibly buy makes you 100% unkillable. People spend a lot of points in dodge and it only lets them dodge like, <60% of blows. Would YOU spend points into 60% protection, or 90% protection?

I would suggest a look at the entire "leveling" system for characters.

Perhaps giving characters only half (or 2/3 or 3/4 or something) their initial points total each round past the first would be a decent thing to do. It would promote more specialisation and prioritisation of point usage as opposed to everyone reaching the final as a master dodger and grand master weapon user and would also limit adamantine cloaks quite a lot, it would be an entire round's point allowance.

is that applicable to non-crabs though? No sense in balancing the tournament over a fucking crab.
In any way, I don't think banning adamantine is the way to go. Adjust the point cost, don't remove things from the tourney that will make them more diverse and more fun.

>>
>>182893687
Right now I'm thinking I'll just double the price of cloaks, because even leather ones are seriously good value. this will mean an adamantine cloak will cost a whopping 360 points, making them very much endgame tier.

>>182893762
That sounds kind of complicated, and I feel favours the big guys, who give up less points early for an innate advantage in size and durability.

Congratulations Herne, you have 215 points to spend on your upgrades for the next round! Fear not, my friendly gorilla, for your uh, quest? Well, whatever reason you had for joining the tourney, you may still fight your way back to the land of the living should you triumph in the battle royale.

Our next and final fight for the quarterfinals features the mighty and possibly murderous Hercule Poirot against the dimunitive and fetish-fueled Steve the Wageslave.

Wielding a bronze mace and garbed in naught but a lion leather cloak, this odd warrior has quickly earned himself a large following, both for his hugely entertaining finishers, as well as for his incredible victory with an oak club. Now, he is ready to step into the arena and fight once more. For his gods, his people, his honour, and for "Agatha", whoever she may be.

Steve the Wageslave seeks to rise above his natural position and claim a place beside his queen, where he may worship her and her many feet. While we're not completely sure this little insect man is completely fight in the head, his undying lust for feet may just allow him to go above and beyond any negligible differences in strength and skill he has with his foes.

Now, place your bets folks, for the last of the quarterfinals will commence shortly!
>>

His left hand got cut off, while the muscle of the lower right arm got torn apart, yet there was no message saying that he dropped the sword, either Ulric didn't have a sword, or decided to sheath it.

But it's alright, everybody makes mistakes, I would have liked a rematch but if there isn't one I don't mind, I hope Hercule defeats Steve though.
>>
>>182892787
If you're going to bring that up. I'm pretty certain the edgelord had an adamantine cloak on too when he got gibbed by Efeye.
>>
>>182894701
does muscle tearing necessarily mean you will lose control of your sword?
>>
>>182894819
As far as I know it does, in every test I've made if a muscle gets torn apart, it will render the limb unusable, either making the creature fall to the ground if it's a leg, or dropping whatever he was holding if it's an arm.

There is also a quote from the wiki "Injuries to muscle layers can sometime cause the affected limb to become unusable. This usually happens when the muscle is "torn apart" rather than just torn. If the muscle is in an arm, damage to the muscle may cause items held in that arm's hand to be dropped. Torn apart leg or foot muscles may cause the creature to fall over and sometimes be unable to walk until the injury heals."

But as I've said, every time I've seen a muscle get torn apart, the limb becomes unusable.

As soon as the horn blows, Hercule readies his mace and charges at his smaller opponent. Fluttering above head height, Steve flits forward and strikes with his pick, attempting to brain the human with just one blow. Batting the steel out of the way, Hercule snarls, ineffectually attempting to knock Steve out of the air. The two move back and forth for a moment, with neither landing a blow, until Hercule manages to bring his mace in a sweeping arc and crushing one of Steve's chitinous limbs! Unfortunately for the warriro, it is one of Steve's "spare" limbs, who chitters angrily and dives below his foe to plunge the pick deep in the fleshy part of Hercule's leg! Even as Hercule falls over, he flings himself up and catches another of Steve's arms, smashing it into a fountain of ichor and broken chitin! While both fighters are severely wounded neither give in, even as another of the ant-man's arms are pulped and Hercule's own lower arm is mangled by the tip of the steel pick. And yet, Hercule is smiling even as he bleeds, for now the ant man has only one arm left. The most dangerous one to be sure, yet Steve is no longer hovering in the air, instead panting as he stands on the earth. Shudders run through the small frame of our gladiator, and ichor flows in a steady stream from the torn and ruined stumps. Kneeling, Hercule bares his teeth and beckons at his foe. Rising to the challenge, Steve charges at Poirot, single remaining arm at the ready. The pick falls, aimed directly between Hercule's eyes, but it never lands. Simply standing his ground with mace at the ready, Hercule raises it in a burst of speed right as Steve attacks, intercepting the final strike and smiting the ant-man's remaining limb with such force that it sails off, still holding the pick. Steve, armless, weaponless, and pushed beyond his limits, falls to the earth softly. Watching the ant-man bleed to death, Hercule turns, stands, and Raises his mace to cheers and screams from the crowd.

Congratulations Hercule Poirot! You have made your people proud and stood tall amongst your peers, earning yourself 303 points to spend on your upgrades for the next round.
Fear not Steve, you may find yourself once more in the fray, where you will fight for your queen and her smelly, smelly feet in the Battle Royale. Whether you survive or not is entirely up to you, however.

This brings an end to the quarterfinals of the Third Dwarf Fortress Gladiator Tournament. Only four fighters remain, and all of them are well versed in the deadly arts of battle. Once next weeks fights are completed, we will only have the Battle Royale and the great Finale, where the ultimate warrior will finally be revealed and crowned
CHAMPION OF /DFG/
Thank you all for coming my friends, this has been a most enjoyable evening. May the next series of fights be as entertaining to witness.

Now, rest in peace my dear warriors. Press F to pay respects to our beloved:
