the logs went into "No recent events" already
they didn't specifically mention the sapling, only 5 different bodyparts taking the full blow and cleaving asunder, head included. i've never had a 1 zlevel drop be anywhere near this fatal, so my conclusion is that the sapling must have done it

Started playing recently and have been following a couple of guides such as the Getting started guide, and Dave's. I've had two fortresses now that have suffered repeated attacks by werebeasts, and an eventual miasma spread and mass infection amongst all my dwarves. I'm wondering what steps I should be taking to deal with these things? I've started locking doors, and setting up an alert to get my dwarves in a burrow.

Werebeasts are super cooky this version. You need a defense system very early. Either prioritize getting 5 dorfs armed and with mail shirts ASAP, or make a drawbridge entrance with a backup bridge because werebeasts be werefasts.
Miasma is literally "you didn't make corpse and refuse stockpiles outside"

>Miasma is literally "you didn't make corpse and refuse stockpiles outside"
I had fairly large piles a little bit away, but something tells me the dwarves only stopped moving the bodies because of the 3 werepanthers in the fortress.
>>
>>182529512
Oh yeah.
That happens.
If you don't control the infection as soon as it happens it's game over man, game over.
"Control" involves drawbridges by the way
>>
>>182529693
I've noticed most of these guides don't prioritize things like traps, defenses, and a military early on at all. I'm probably going to hit those sections of the guide next, but it seems like I'm spending way too much time on food.

>>
Butcher skill only affects the time it takes you to butcher things, not the returns or anything right?
Having one dedicated butcher frustrates me so much, I'm thinking of just making like 5 butcher's shops and enabling butchery on all my haulers.
>>
How can I scroll through events faster when I'm checking out a site in legends mode? I only know about just pressing the down arrow key.
>>
>>182529219
I can imagine Toady sitting there wracking his brain over how to implement sex but its pretty simple. Just have a Sims like woohoo mechanic where two characters strip and flash hearts until they wear each other out. Such a thing would be necessary for roleplay reasons. Their should also be other romance actions like kissing and courtship but there would no reason have anything that would allow the sort of "perversion" Toady seems to be afraid of.
>>
>>182530478
Butcher skill is basically useless.
>>
>>182529991
How would that would? Would your character randomly path towards NPCs and attack them. To be honest that would make be irritating to be a werecreature. It is best to allow the player to roleplay things like that.
>>
>>182529320
very poor advice.

first of all, werebeasts are NOT hard. as long as you bring one soldier when you embark, and have him train from the start, you'll be well prepared for any werebeast attack.

second, it's NOT advisable to have a corpse stockpile outside. not only does it become exposed to necromancers, but it also takes up needless space, and potentially scares merchants away.

instead, you should dump corpses in a pit that's deep enough to hide its contents from anyone standing on the top. if you want, you can add a drawbridge at the bottom, as a trash compactor.
>>
>>182529512
build the stockpiles inside, use two sets of doors to contain the miasma, and priority is in not letting werebeasts into the fort in the first place, if people do get attacked by it then read the combat logs and quarantine them, if they don't transform into werebeasts at the next full moon they are safe (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Calendar)
>>
How can I block Forgotten Beasts from coming through the underground lake if they can destroy bars?
>>
>>182532949
1v1ing a werebeast is just asking for trouble. They're legendary wrestlers. That's why you just get a bunch of people a weapon ASAP.
A garbage pit is better, sure, but it's not automatic like a stockpile.
>>
>>182533231
Are underwater fortifications still buggy?
If so, you can do a toilet bend and install a floor grate in there. Buildings can't be destroyed from below.
>>
>>182533325
Make a garbage airlock if you want to keep miasma in well.

Need to add child tags to Hydra raws, found in creatures_standard.txt, and get a breeding pair, the offspring can be fully domesticated, breeding pair cannot.

Need to add both somewhere, don't know if location is important. In example, hydraling is singular and hydralings is plural, change it to whatever you like. I think that's it.

we don't need constant hype, though.

just because we have a fun tourney going on, it doesn't mean that life doesn't go on as usual in the general. having everyone being "hype" throughout the entire week would kill the normal posting off entirely, and we'd have a solid month where bay12ers post about ebin crabystaby.

Toady, his brother and cats are basically devoted full-time to dwarf fortress it seems. As much as I think he'd be a fine father, every time children take on one of their parent's legacy in the form of some creative work, it always sucks. There are several series's whose authors died, but was continued by their son or something and invariably the quality nosedives. While they're certainly the best suited for it, you don't inherit and apparently can't really teach the "spark" that made the original thing great.
>>
>>182570012

But the "spark" in this case is just plain old autism. Nobody plays DF because they think the writing is thrilling or the concept is fresh and original. They play it because the combinatorial explosion of all these systems causes crazy, unexpected things to happen in entertaining ways.

>>182568337

DF isn't just autism, there's a lot of personality in it too. It has a charm to it.
>>
>>182570464
It clearly isn't plain old autism, otherwise we'd have many, many more DFs, a lot of people have plain old autism. The fact that DF is basically unrivaled speaks quite a lot to what he can make, and even if you were tutored by him from birth I doubt you can fully recreate the essence of what makes DF. Yes, the SYSTEMS, not the writing, or concept.

If you think that's easy to make, or that Toady doesn't have some kind of special intuition for these things, well I don't know what to say, I would think you are very wrong.
>>
>>182572113
I'm not the other guy you're arguing with but I think that's what he meant by "autism".
The autism is in spending 15 years making all those complex systems and that's pretty much what the game has going for it.
>>
>>182572361

BEHEAD THOSE WHO INSULTS TOADY!!
>>
>>182572361
Well, I would, at the very least, object to "plain old". But even if you think that as long as someone could stick on something for 15 years they would get something reasonably close to the quality of DF (I certainly don't), you would still be forced to admit that very, very few people have that kind of perseverance, and that alone is worthy of praise. Even if it is "only" being an autist who doesn't know when to quit.
>>
>>182571581
That's a hilariously apt description.

>>182572361
Huh, I thought the autism was in the idea/devotion to building a crappy fantasy universe generator when everyone else seems to think people want to make games sat in crappy fantasy universes.

>crappy fantasy universe generator
Honestly, I think this idea has been the worst blow to DF yet.
The development shifted from being a game to being a giant civ simulator, and Toady's not just ignoring the gameplay, he's tearing out the floorboards to fit the new civ simulation autism. For example, tying goblin invasions to inscrutable conditions that just result in players almost never being invaded anymore. Forcing kobolds to go through worldgen which ends up in missing kobolds for the most part. Sure, the simulation is impressive, but it adds almost nothing to the gameplay and is actually worse than just the old versions of "you embarked close to goblins here take goblins".

Read up about old, old DF:
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/23a:Chasm
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/23a:Cave_river
That's fucking awesome, right? You get regular cavemen invasions and if you chuck garbage in you get more invasion too. It's like you're actually playing a game!
What was that replaced by? Autistically detailed cavern generation which just spawns some crundles and troglodytes with no real pattern or fashion. I haven't seen an underground tribe in ages.
The "now" is super detailed, but it's lame and easy and boring.
>>
>>182572894
You might think the setting is derivative, and it is, but you really should stop and consider the merits of doing so.

Dwarf Fortress is an incredibly difficult game to get into, firstly, people are not used to these visuals, and require some time to acclimate, secondly, the interface is also unusual for most, and thirdly, many of the quirks and mechanics of the systems require a wiki, even if they are mostly based on real world things/behaviors. Every step, every hurdle there gets rid of 90% of the possible playerbase. But one hurdle they DON'T have to worry about is the setting. We know what dragons are, we know what dwarves are, we know what elves are, and they all act EXACTLY as we'd expect them to act.

If Toady had opted for a completely new and unusual setting (I'm thinking something in the vein Dune at the time), one with new people, new creatures, new words for everything, it would be yet another 90% gone. Because they don't know who or what the fuck anything is, and they wouldn't want to invest EVEN MORE time in understanding when they've already been through that with the visuals, interface and mechanics.

For us, who passed those hurdles long ago, a more imaginative setting only makes the game even better. But for the newcomer, DF is a frightening and mysterious beast, and the admittedly derivative setting gives them some flotsam to cling to lest they be swallowed up in the waves.
>>
>>182574039
I think DF was always meant to be a crappy fantasy universe generator, I think Toady did say that.
>>
>>182574039
look at this, the "2d was better" autist is back.

ffs, if you want a simple colony management game where nothing outside of your tine plot of land matters, then there are countless other options for you. it sounds like you'd appreciate rimworld a lot.

also, if you want to go back to "old df", it's just one download from the bay12 download page away.
>>
>>182574648
nothing outside of your tiny plot of land matters in modern DF either.
>>
>>182574039
The simulation part is literally what makes DF even remotely interesting in the first place. If you want goblins just magically appearing next to you so you can get your fix, there are plenty of other games for that.

The game also isn't just fortress mode either, actual caverns and real sieges absolutely benefit adventure mode and even in fortress mode, it's silly that goblins could get to you before where they normally couldn't because they didn't actually path to you. You can certainly argue the simulation is done poorly, but regressing back to simpler mechanics is NOT the fucking way that DF should go. There are tons of simple games if that's what you want, fuck off I want complex now.
>>
>>182574648
>>182574852
I, too, want complex.
But I want FUNCTIONING complex.
A highly complex feature that practically doesn't work is worse than a simple tried and true mechanic.

>>
>>182574852
Not that guy but I still haven't seen a real siege in adventure mode, I've been to towns that were being "sieged" but all I could find were just a couple of goblins.
>>
>>182574852
>The simulation part is literally what makes DF even remotely interesting in the first place

how can you say this with a straight face when the internet has pretty much lost interest in this game now that's gotten easy and unfun? There were a lot of things that made the original DF interesting and fun, and a lot of it has been replaced by things that are ostensibly less interesting and fun, but are autist's wet dream of a world gen simulator. I'm not going to say that modern DF isn't great, it has a lot of things going for it and adventure mode might actually shape up to be a game in 10 years, but don't act like the game hasn't gotten worse in pretty much every aspect except for world building and more in depth simulation. That's just dishonest, and is the kind of thing you would expect from unreasonable fanboy autists who cannot see anything wrong with their selected fandom.
>>

This, caverns are impossible to explore.

Some kind of cartography in-game would be nice.

Also, right now adv mode sieges are bugged. You can run into camps full of people going to attack a town, but they're all asleep and it is literally impossible to wake them up.

lolwut? toady gets more donations than ever before, and everyone in the general seems to be hyped as fuck for the artifacts and the myths.
>>
>>182574039
It's not a civ simulator and never going to be, having the game make civs which respond to their environment is a goal, as is having the game make the environment display effects of local civs through deforestation, landscaping, and so forth.

Having the game produce a mythological groundwork which involves actual gods and legends and such is another goal, having those gods and legends shape the actual geography, creatures, and civilizations is an even deeper goal.

Once we have those parts in place we will be able to sit back and just enjoy the stories it generates on their own, more than we can now, but we'll also be able to take part in them to an ever greater extent.

There are lots of fucking shitty fantasy games, we will never be at a point where anyone will ever look around and say "you know, I really wish we had just one more shitty fantasy game" without being so ironic they start to trigger R process nucleosynthesis as they collapse up their own ass into a hipster event horizon.

On the other hand, all of those shitty fantasy games benefit from the fact that Toady didn't go down the route of "shitty dwarf game #892" and instead is pursuing the shitty fantasy universe generator as a step in the development of an awesome story generator.

>>182574221
Other anon was talking about the derivative aspects, I just found the description amusing.
>>
>>182575716
sieges happen less often and only under specific circumstances, ambushes almost never happen, the survival aspect of the game has been trivialized with overabundant food and wood sources, I recall that it may have been harder to train your dwarves to be unstoppable murder machines, but I'm not sure. A lot of the draw of the game in the first place was that you were genuinely building a dwarven fortress that would have to resist attacks from foreign invaders and the survival of your fort was something that you actually had to worry about. It doesn't matter anymore unless you purposely gimp yourself or put yourself into a very challenging biome, and even then it's a hell of a lot easier than it used to be. Dwarf fortress is no longer the challenging hardcore whacky game that it used to be, and is just a shadow of its former self. If it weren't for the reputation it already had, nobody new would be playing it.

>>182575992
>and everyone in the general seems to be hyped as fuck for the artifacts and the myths.

yeah everyone in this general who has stuck with it through everything. Nobody outside of this place hardly talks about DF anymore, and when they do it's with a "not as great as it used to be but there's some cool new stuff"

This general and the playerbase for this game in general are kept alive through the very sparse updates that add hints of what this game's potential could be(in 20 years). It's no longer the case that the game in its current state is fucking awesome and people could play it forever and we just want to see some cool new shit, now it's "man the game kind of sucks compared to its old version but at least we have a few new things. oh and the world is alive I guess, too bad it kills the framerate even more though"

it would make sense if it happened to people with certain personality traits, and if it required more pressure.

it doesn't make sense, however, that your entire fort turned into a giant fighting ring just because someone's pet died.

it would be fun to have some sort of spiral into violence in DF. however, I'd prefer if it was based more on socioeconomical factors. like, you have poverty, so you also end up with crime, violence and urban blight. I'm sure the crime and punishment arc will implement a lot of this.

Simplest answer: give dwarves slavery:abhorrent (think that might be default) and give elves, humans, gobs slavery:acceptable. There are other triggers which can lead to warfare but slavery is a really juicy one in my experience.

You can also do things like have entities which can be taken over by sapient semi/megabeasts with the [POWER] tag and then use the sphere alignment to encourage more strife. I get dragons leading goblin civs waging war on civs which worship water deities all the time.

>>182581224
They still have a path-finding routine which checks for locked/open doors and such but they're not as disoriented as we are when roaming around underground since they basically have the whole memory afterimage effect we do but they also have the future part of their path displayed.

You could, now that I think about it, play a game of cat and mouse because they will pursue you as far as they can tell which way you went but beyond that they end up losing track and can start to wander around on a seeking-target routine.

Is there a way to stymie the growth of my new civ? This is only 125 years, and they always "fill up" the surroundings area with sites, and as a result there's generally a lot more of them than other races. This is probably due to their 2-5 kids per pregnancy, but I was hoping their 25-50 max age would slow them down more.

Without significantly altering their clutch size or max age any further, how else can I slow down how quickly they overwhelm their area?

Well I made some tests, this time putting humans with two handed swords against humans with halberds and great axes (I chose the two handed sword because it seemed like the sword equivalent to those weapons) I also made another where I compare the performance of each other against large creatures, and I repeated the test where I compared the performance of steel short swords and steel battle axes against trolls wearing iron armor with the results of steel two-handed swords, steel halberds, steel great axes and a modified version of the two-handed sword that lacks the stab attack against the same trolls.

Here are the full results of the two-handed sword vs halberd test: https://pastebin.com/dtpA89Vr

what is the race you're working on?
>>

They're a humanoid race that's slightly taller, slightly stronger, and much more aggressive, worse than goblins even. They raid surroundings and also have a lot of infighting, I call them niggers.
>>
>>182587080
They're a race of praying mantis people, they're nearly finished, might post it here when I'm done.

Here's their creature raws to get an idea of them, they obviously won't work without some other stuff too, though.

Unfortunately you can't mess with reproduction too much, so I couldn't implement the real mantis habit of the females eating the males after sex.

That's actually a myth. They don't do that as part of their reproduction.
They only do that under extreme stress.
Such as, you know, being abducted by humans and closely studied while captive in a tiny box.

It's not a myth, it's just more common in captivity. Wikipedia quotes a 25% chance for the male to escape being eaten.

>They're legendary wrestlers.
They're not. Werebeasts have the same skills that they had before being bitten. Moderately skilled military dwarves can typically take a werebeast in single combat without injury.
>>
>>182582607
This is interesting, I was taking a look at the results of the swords and axes vs trolls with iron amor and then comparing to the results of steel hammers and platinum hammers vs large creatures, since in the first set of that test the humans also fought trolls with iron armor, and I realized that the humans with steel short swords performed better than the humans with steel/platinum hammers, and the humans with steel/platinum hammers had iron armor, while the humans with steel short swords were completely naked but with the same skills as them, so it's even more impressive.

So, I guess this means that, if you have to fight a troll that is wearing a full suit of iron armor, and you have to choose between a steel short swords or a steel/platinum hammer, you should go for the short sword.

The original werebeast that shows up has always been a legendary wrestler for me.
There should be NO followup werebeasts or you're pretty much boned. And you'd probably do well to have a few militiadorfs just in case.
>>
>>182595563
Doubtful. Worldgen almost never produces creatures with any legendary skills, and werebeasts have to follow the same rules for gaining skill in worldgen that every other creature does. Werebeasts that were never controlled by a player will, almost without exception, have a small set of low unarmed combat skills and a civilian profession if they have any skills at all.

Actually, steel is one of the features that really need work. There are a lot of techniques to make steel, and several types of steel. From what I've read on bay12 threads about it, current dwarven steel is similar to modern stainless, and actually not "realistically" as hard and sharp as steel can be. Ideally, steel would have varying grades of quality and different types of steel could serve different purposes.

He was married once before too, from what I understand, and it didn't end well. I just can't understand that guy. According to him, he's never had a real job, but basically has the comfiest "job" in the world, basically being his brother's game tester and designer, doesn't even need to code the game... yet he'll risk another marital wild ride as an unemployable man in his 40's. God forbid he starts a family and DF stops making money, he'll have to kill himself.

I get the feeling that it's Threetoe who's doing most of the raws. Toady might do some example raws, but one of the typical roles of a designer is to do endless data-entry in order to fill in game data.

I'm probably wrong. Toady is most likely doing everything and Threetoe just walks up to him every now and then and says 'Taverns would be cool, eh.'
>>
>>182613442

>>
>>182613890
Flashing doesn't necessarily mean they have a legendary skill. Can't speak about were-beast skills, but some NPCs have flashing icons denoting their position, like human lords/ladies. Wouldn't be surprised if it did it for were-beasts too. As far as I've seen the AI doesn't really know how to wrestle, every time I've paid attention they just randomly grab and release body parts, rarely upgrading into a lock or chokehold or doing anything actually dangerous. Unless you count shaking. If they ever latch on they shake like a motherfucker, goddamn shaking OP.

What? If anything it's the complete opposite.

When a guy says he's going to build a stairway to the moon and starts laying some bricks everyone laughs and hopes he at least gets some experience building things that he can take to other projects before he inevitably gives up before reaching the third floor. But when he gets over 40% of the way there all of a sudden it's holy fuck the madman might actually do it, provided he doesn't fall to his death at any moment.
>>
>>182615226
More like when two guys say they're building a stairway to the moon and it's been a whole load of time since they've started and the crowd has for the most part slowly dispersed except the zealous fan cult and now one of the two guys is getting married so he'll probably build slower and possibly cause instability in the partnership and damn it feels like they've slowed down in their building now that you mention it
>>
>>182614692
Well we'll find out this weekend I guess.
>>
>>182615226

>>
>>182615458
>>182615546
>he'll probably build slower
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I wasn't under the impression that Threetoe actually did any of the development himself. I've never hugely paid much attention to devblogs, or what they've said, but the actual creation of the game is nearly exclusively presented by others as mostly Toady. I've always thought of Threetoe as more of a community/artfaggotry/writefaggotry kind of person than anything nearly so important to its development.
>>
>>182611927
>Threetoe has never had a real job

Are you serious? Toady has a PHD in mathematics and used to work at one of the top universities in the country how is his brother so useless? I thought the reason his brother did not work on Dwarf Fortress full time was because he had another job.
>>
>>182613890
Every werebeast flashes. They weren't legendary wrestlers.
>>
>>182615987
Nah. I think Zack has a PHD in history or something, and did some blue-collar work on the docks for a very short time, then stopped. He said it himself that he's actually never had a real job. All he does is write short stories and make drawings for the site/reward system
>>
>>182616258
He should get a job and stop living off Toady's work.
>>
>>182615987
Also, while Toady is obviously incredibly intelligent, people have often questioned his actual programming skills as being far from perfect and forget the fact that he quit his uni job because he couldn't handle research work. He said it on his podcast at some point, that the reason he quit is because he hated doing research and wasn't skilled enough to do it and also maintain his gamedev hobby, but he hinted that some of his talented colleagues could had maybe pulled it off it they were in his place.

People put too much pressure on the guy assuming he's a fucking 180+ IQ genius savant, but he's just a talented but amateurish programmer with advanced math skills who happens to be incredibly persistent at making his dream game.
>>
>>182616703
Toady does whatever he wants with his money. If he thinks hiring his brother as an assistent is integral to his work, he's probably right.
>>
>>182616912
It's not that Toady is a bad programmer, he's a programmer from a different time. He never moved on from the old school era of no standards where OOP and multithreading wasn't a thing yet.

He might not be a genius-level programmer, but I think "amateurish" is selling him somewhat short. Even accounting for his legendary persistence, having a game as big and complicated as DF is and actually be mostly functional isn't an easy task. I expect him to very familiar and "deft" with his use of whatever spaghetti framework the game uses, but probably too intimidated to use better/more reliable alternatives and sort of stuck in his rut.

>OOP and multithreading
Jesus Christ, don't even start with this shit. There have been mass purges on the forums because of this topic.

toady has said COUNTLESS times, and written on the dev goal list, that he'll do the magic/myths right after the artifacts. then he'll move on to economy, which may or may not include boats.
>>

Dude my computer couldn't run DF with a lighting engine.

>>182662378
I actually think it could affect quite a bit. Boats could randomly shipwreck if you have a river of by a big body of water. Then your dwarves could salvage it and fight monsters aboard it, if any. Also, boats could be useful for invasions. And magic, you could have dwarves studying magical stuff and doing things like reanimating or controlling things.

Nah, you've always been able to murder kids with nearly no consequence as long as your fort wasn't already a cesspit of misery. A legendary dining room alone is enough outweigh several close-relative-deaths per season, and you can let them rot in the halls too if the dwarves have nice bedrooms. Interestingly, the good thought from having a child outweighs the negative thought from their death, so you can have new mothers ride an infanticide minecart loop and still get a net positive stress result from it.
Really, the threat of tantrums and tantrum spirals was always massively overblown by badplayers doing badplayer things in well known succession forts.

But that's no fun. My idea is for these guys to basically be cave gypsies meddling in forces they can't comprehend. Thus, the most fun thing to do would be to make it so their spells can put them in as much danger as their enemies. When they caste animate dead, they ought to aim well and just hope the thing targets who they're fighting instead of the caster. Alternately, it could be used as a distraction while running away.

>>
>>182685481
they are both in, but they can also both be improved.

IIRC, grabbing someone's weapon forces the battle into no-quarter, and this can't be reverted. so unless you plan on killing someone, it's not necessarily good to try and disarm them. I mostly do it when fighting angels.

for the knocking someone unconscious part, it can certainly be made a lot easier. the stronger you become, the harder it becomes to punch someone in the head without said head exploding. one possible improvement would be the ability to use less force than usual, in order to keep the opponent alive.

Use DFlang. It generates languages out of text files you provide it. For example, if you have a list with a bunch of French and Chinese words it will make some Frenchese language and fill your language file.

I've been playing around with a mercenary army system. Currently have 15 native dwarves, and 22 non-native soldiers of varying races, all organised into squads based off of origin and weapon type. I've got them all fully outfitted in steel (making the large stuff was a pain in the ass), and constantly training. Adamantine weapons are coming any day now too.

Stone may be forbidden
Stone stockpiles might be full
Do you have a burrow?
Wheelbarrows are not used for stones
Did you disable the stone hauling labor?
Is stone actually accessible?
Is there anything dangerous near the stone?
Is the stockpile set to take from another stockpile?
You should use minecarts instead. Dorfs can guide them without a track, anywhere in the world (so long as there is a Hauling-screen designated stop at the origin and destination)

So my fort is in an evil biome. Along come some human traders, narrowly avoiding the zombifying murk. Cool. However, a dwarf got caught in the murk and became a husk. By that time the traders were in the inside depot and the bridge to the outside were closed. So I send my military to the fort entrance (right next to the depot), and open the bridge. They attack the zombie. What happens next I don't understand. They kill the zombie, but then the humans start attacking my military and kill half of the squad. What the fuck? Whenever the traders get scared they either send their guards to kill the monster or just leave. I've never seen them turn on my fort.

This. A new update gets released, and we get new things to poke at, and it distracts us for a while. Until the next update distracts us again.

Isn't that evryone? After playing DF for nearly a decade, that's usually how it goes. I get really into it for like a month and play for a good 20+ hours, then stop for the rest of the year.
>>

On the other hand there's the people who seem to think DF can do no wrong, even though it literally has a splash screen explaining it's a pre-alpha game and there WILL be wonkyness in it.
Not to these people.

People need to realize that yes, DF will inevitably have a lot of garbage stuff, and although they will be fixed it may take a few years minimum, and people should be at peace with that concept because that's how DF's development works. It's not good to get caught up in every shortfall. It's not good to pretend the shortfalls don't exist either.

Dwarves get shit done. It's a core component of their being. Compensation or share matter little, they just get shit done.

The irony is that Dwarves are continuously characterized as greedy. They are anything but. A Dwarf only desires quality materials and inspiration. They cannot want, but for the appreciation of a fine work. A Dwarf is nothing more than a single-minded compulsion to construct any single thing in the most pristine, most masterful circumstances.

A dwarf has little concept of ownership. Sure, they may take possession, but a Dwarf does not make a thing to own it. A Dwarf makes a thing so that it may exist, so that its craftdwarfship may be expressed to nothing and everything. A Dwarf needs no acknowledgement of his work; he merely needs the work to be.

In a sense, a Dwarf is a force of nature. Much as the glaciers sculpt valleys and rivers, a Dwarf sculpts masterpieces. A Dwarf is but a natural tool tool, honed by blind instinct to construct the most deliberate, most skilled mountains and valleys -- all expressed as an essence in the rolling contours of a gilded statue, or in the peak of a sharpened blade.

I take what Toady discusses in DF talk as "canon", anon. He's talked about why it didn't work back then, what he plans to do with it, etc. He's actually talked about peasant classes and shit, also about permanent markets and trading of property. Chances are, dwarven society will look less "socialist" in the future, not more.

Most of the stories (ascii rewards and the threetoe scenarios featured on the site) show human/dwarf/elf societies as being mostly typical flavors of medieval/fantasy kingdom. Some theocracies here and there that sort of thing.

That said the ascii story linked above depicted an underclass revolt resulting from extreme poverty/overcrowding (majority of the dwarf/goblin work force displaced after desperate animal men came to the fort for work after the fort destroyed their forests). Ascii stories don't carry much weight compared to the more formal ones but still, odds are something will be there ~eventually~

I'm a blacksmith I'm pretty well read on the subject of making steel with traditional methods. In some methods of smelting iron ore you can actually get steel as the carbon content can differ throughout the smelt.

A simple bloomery can produce iron with almost no carbon content and stuff with upwards of 2% carbon. A blast furnace and produce a more controlled gradient of steels, which is how the japanese developed their sward making technique.

I think it would be a bit too autistic to program though

It's somewhat astounding here that the literal definition of "meme" is extremely broad, to the point where technically speaking, almost fucking everything is a "meme". As overused as that word is, it's technically correct.

like the hair follicles and sweat someone mentioned, I doubt you'd interact with it much in vanilla. your civ would probably only know how to make 1 or 2 kinds of steel, determined in worldgen or through research, and while the properties might differ I imagine it would use a highly abstracted process like that's in place now

It depends on how much you'd want to abstract the process. Quenching and tempering steel is an incredibly crucial part of using it in tools, each kind of steel requires differing quenches and tempers to be used effectively for every purpose. A mistempered sword for instance could snap right in half or be so soft you could bend it into a knot.

I don't think most people would have the knowledge necessary to figure out exactly what to do for the best results.

Holy shit are you me? I'm also having the exact same problem, and boy have I searched I can't find any damn info on this. The DFLang thread squat, google turns up nothing, and the wiki doesn't say anything about this on the characters it uses.

What's even weirder is that if you export your world into legends viewer, they get corrupted again. Different from the original, and also different from the way they showed up in game.
>>
>>182721059
>>182721467
oh well fuck me. At least I have discovered the offending symbols. I'll just use the replace all function to change them to a harmless equivalent and we're all good.
>>
battle royale when
>>
>>182721574
That's a lame solution, though, especially since the symbols already exist in DF. Ideally one would find the correlation with what needs to be in the raws and what will show up in DF. Comparing the dwarf language raws with the fortress name picker would least allow us to get the ones dwarves use, dunno about the others though.
>>
>>182722515
that sounds incredibly tedious though.
>>
>>182722603
It wouldn't be that bad, it's just incomplete. Here, I'll do it right now.
>>
Well ok, never mind, it's worse than I thought. It's not 1-to-1. Every instance of a strange character in the raws seems to stand for TWO characters in-game, an accented letter and then a normal letter, meaning you could be looking at a unique character for every combination of the two. Moreover, my applocale is in Japanese so many of these are showing up as kanji and shit. Not a biggie for me, but not helpful for anyone else.

Fuck this, man, what a nightmare.
>>
Can anyone explain the manager and job order system to me? I want to make drinks and keep a sizable amount but I don't want to use all my plants. How?

Say I want 100 units of alcohol what combination on the condition screen of work orders do I have to make?
>>
>>182722737

>>182723271
j -> m, to get to manager screen, q for a new order, start typing, i think its 'brew drink from plant', set quantity to 100, done. Your manager will validate the order and then your brewer will make 100 drinks from plants.

The manager system really just a way to make more than ten things at a time.
>>
>>182723271
Brew drink from plant x20 (5 drinks per plant), go to the order and assign how many stills you want it to be able to take, so just your max stills, and up the priority if you want. And you don't have to set conditions for just one order, if you want it repeated or stuff like that you can assign different conditions.
>>
>>182723567
Ok but how do I get that to happen repeatedly without me redoing the order? Like if the drinks go to 80 and I want the brewery to make more is there a way to automate that?

>>
>>182723796
You don't without 3rd party stuff. I prefer automating things too, so I'd get DFHack if you don't already have it. It comes with workflow, which will suspend and activate repeat orders as necessary to make something stay within some limit.

My adventure mode companion is a bat woman and she's currently hovering at max Z level above the ground at this stupid goblin site.
I don't think she can even see me (I had to use dfhack's reveal to figure out where she was, I thought she was down inside the fortress) and so she won't follow.
I can't fast travel and bring her with me because dark fortress, and if I walk far enough away to fast travel then she's too far to come with me.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Some dfhack incantation maybe?
>>
>>182725374
Go into your saves raws, remove their flying, load it up, wait until shes about to hit the ground, save and quit, reenable flying. Maybe??
>>
>>182725374
>>
>>182725757

Yeah, maybe I'll try that tomorrow morning.

I wish I could build, I'd just build me a staircase or whatever and climb up high enough for her to see me and react.
Also, I just read on the wiki that companions are supposed to become an army * on the overmap now and try join back up if you fast travel without them. I didn't know had been implemented, I'm still used to previous versions with them just standing there until you find them or they die of old age. Though the wiki kind of implies it's not 100% reliable. I might try that before doing the raws.

>>182726180

Hah! Oh god, my sides will join her in a moment.

Another question, can you not claim Dark Fortresses? I killed the boss up in the throne room and everything, but trying to state a claim to the cowering goblins doesn't work.

I wonder if when Toady does boats we'll see galleys with slaves (or any galleys at all for that matter).

Historically galley slavery was a medieval penal punishment, ancient navies relied on professionals because galleys were smaller and less numerous.

you're missing my point entirely.

you can use a graphical tileset, and still have transparent ground tiles. and you can use a graphical tileset that leaves text characters alone.

if you look at >>182738112, you see that certain tiles (i.e. , . ') don't resemble their actual characters at all. this is because the author of the set chose to turn them into graphical sprites for the ground tiles. this makes the text very awkward and hard to read.

As someone who just started getting into this game a week ago, I say give it a try. 95% of my fun has come from fucking up a fort horribly and learning from what I did wrong.

My only issue so far is the framerate drops that I've started experiencing a little bit of as my first successful fort has starting growing.
