There's no tricking the eshop involved. All game contents are freely downloadable from the CDN(content delivery network) by design. They have a layer of crypto on them protected by the 'title key'. When you purchase a game you get a 'ticket' that includes the title key. What Nintendo never foresaw was people hacking their systems, dumping their tickets, and sharing their title keys.

This is not unique to Nintendo. Sony uses a similar system for the Piss3(see psndl).

Is the xl upgrade for the 3ds worth it?

I have a very old 3ds that has questionable shoulder buttons and gouges on the top screen due to the bottom screen

I have trade in cash for gamestop (flipping games like a week ago) so I can get a 2ds xl when it comes out or a 3ds xl.

I'm questioning whether I want another 3ds to replace this old one, a switch if I throw in another hundred bucks to use all my gamestop trade in, or a vita. The problem is gamestop pretty much is guaranteed to have an updated vita.

I have a hacked o3ds, and I meant an updated version being the new 2ds xl. I'd rather get a vita, (another console) as opposed to getting an updated version of the 3ds and playing the same games as the one I have but with a bigger screen.

My New 3DS is on 11.4 and my Old 3DS is on 11.2. Both stock. So I guess the only way to get boot9strap on my New 3DS is to go the system transfer route.

Is that too much trouble? And is there anyway to roll back to 11.3? I doubt it but worth asking before I tackle this head on

IIRC, it had something to do with access to out-of-range memory (or rather, memory that does not exist).
Usually, if something like that happens on your computer it would complain about it thanks to the Memory Management Unit, or short MMU.
The GBA and DS had no such thing, however (the 3DS has it but only on the ARM11 side, which has nothing to do with either the DS nor the GBA).
The GBA handled invalid reads in a weird way. Invalid reads just get the last value given to the CPU by the bus instead of a fixed number or a fetch abort.
The ARM7 core of the DS doesn't do that, however.
I might have misremembered some details regarding this as it has been a long time since I've read about it but at least, you should get the gist.

Does anyone have experience doing the hard-mod on a NTSC-J PS2 to get Free McBoot?

Unfortunately it's a slim. I had two ps2s, a NTSC-U and NTSC-J.

The NTSC-U needs a new laser, but the NTSC-J works fine. I can't seem to find any reliable information on getting Free McBoot onto an NTSC-J console. I have found that if I order a memory card with it pre-installed, I'd need use a U.S. PS2 to install free McBoot to a different memory card specifically compatible for the Japanese region.

hey if anyone feels like helping me, I tried to update my 3ds from 11.2 to the current version and when I did that it said "update complete" immediately and restarted but when it did it was just a black screen. I tried booting it up again with and without the SD card and its still just a black screen. When I boot into Safe Mode on the bottom screen it says

I'm tempted buying a WiiU for that reason. I have a 7700K so emulating is no problem for me, and Dolphin works great, but some Wii games like Wii Zelda asks you to use some special controllers. As for WiiU emulation, I feel like it's kind of a mess and I'm not sure I'd really enjoy myself playing broken games.
