Spinner tiles could work with FOEs as your point of reference.
You walt towards a crossing with a FOE in plain side, step on the spinner tile, get some spinning animation (at least one whole rotation) and now the FOE is no longer in front of you.
Looking around you see it is now left of you meaning the spinner turns you to to the right - so now you know how that spinner works even coming from other directions.

EO2U enemy grimoires suck ass.
Dragonic Fury is ok since it's a 50% atk buff (as opposed to 40%/45% class skills offer), Power Gel and Healing Collar are AGI buffs so they increase Survivalist and Gunner damage without diminishing returns, Charge is a bit useful at 2TP and Petrifying Stare can give your party an actually usable way to turn enemies to stone.
Unless I forgot one or two the rest is trash - especially anything inflicting damage.

3 has "some balance issues", but it's got the best labyrinths, music, and story of the whole series. You're doing yourself a disservice if you skip it.
That's my opinion, anyway. I think the Untolds come reasonably close in terms of labyrinth design, and best OST is a pretty open debate. Best story's not a high bar either, but I stand by those positions regardless. It's well worth playing.

Honestly, if you don't have grimoires from the story party, you are going to have a hard time in expert.
I think you should avoid characters that focus on ailments and binds, because if I remember things right, The final is immune to them.

When EOI first released, there was an ad for it on the back of Nintendo Power. I was young, bad at drawing, and looking for an art style to imitate. EO's style immediately caught my eye. I recall one of the characters stood out as particularly striking, so I thought I'd practice drawing them from the ad. Then one thing led to another and I ended up dropping by Gamestop to see if they had any copies of the game in stock. EO had shitty print runs back then, but luckily there was one left. I bought it and I've stuck with the series ever since. I think I still have that magazine lying around too.

EOIV is the best entry point if you have not much experience with crawlers.
It is the easiest so you can learn the basics without getting punished too much.
It has an overworld which might be more familiar if you only played general RPGs before - other titles have you explore a single labyrinth.
The classes are all strong on their own and synergize well so it's hard to build an outright bad party. As long as your group looks like it should work it likely will.
EOIII is the best on the DS (so the best to emulate). It has neither the harsh level scaling of EO nor the shotty programming of EOII.
Blancing is not as fogiving as EOIV though so if you take too many weak classes at once you can run into trouble.
Introduced a ton of important features that became the series' standard.
EOU introduced story mode but the story party is pretty boring both their personalities and playstyles.
Classic is probably the hardest experience of the 3DS titles and there is no easy cheese party available.
A true challenge especially the 6th Stratum.
EO2U has as of now the most polish and biggest class selection.
Boss design is shotty on replays since many of them rely on patterns.
Balancing is also not that great - Fafnir and Dark Hunter can one-shot almost anything with enough buffs while other classes struggle to contribute anything at any time in the game - but if you built a solid party it is probably the smoothest game to just explore and fight in.

The conensus fan position leans towards III or EOU2 as the best, probably fairly, and there are a bunch of anons who whine about IV not having the 'hard mode' they put into the Untolds or being shorter than the others. It is, of course, a JRPG, and therefore long. As already mentioned, it's a great start because there are no "trap" classes. You will never get stuck and have the advice be "fuck off and grind a new party member in class X from level one".
tldr: it catches loads of shit on places like this, but is one of the best in the series and maybe outright the best to play without internet advice or experience of the series metagame

I never understand this. The dungeons in IV are definitely not labyrinthine, but I don't think straight mazes are good game design - they just mean a bunch of dead ends, therefore backtracking down identical corridors. Finding the stairs then resolutely working through all those dead ends afterwards. IV is smaller, but denser with puzzles, FOE interactions and unique set piece areas that don't just feel like cobbled together tiles. Overworld exploration is also awesome - self-contained dungeons have different dynamics to the others and again make it feel more like a location and less like Red Tileset rooms 1-5.

You have to go back to Old Forest Mine for the Baboon King, there is the one with the ice for the Vessels that also has the ancient wing in it when you thaw it up, Moth's Garden has a post-game boss in it and you will likely want to farm a bit of ore in the bat cave since it is needed for the best pure TEC asseccory in the game.
So there are some you visit more than once even if you don't count the short visit with the Count to one of them and passing though the Golden Deer Keep to reach the 6th Maze.

I don't mean to say actual dead-end labyrinths are the best design in the series; I'd agree with you in saying things like EO1 F25, or the whole EO1 sixth stratum, are poorly designed. My preference is for floors with a degree of meaningful branching and multiple varied obstacles. If a floor only has one sort of puzzle, I would at least expect the stratum as a whole to feature a variety of unique challenges.
The other EOs all accomplish this to some degree. The floors and the scenarios you encounter there are memorable, like the torii of EO3 F20, Iwaopeln's floor, the rafts in EO1 F14 or EO2 F19, and even the bullshit in the 6th strata.
EO4's problem is that its main labyrinths (strata 1-4) are nothing but a single relatively tame puzzle stretched thin over three floors in a row, and the fifth stratum is a single floor. The 6th is good, I'll grant you, but the others really pale in comparison to what else the series has to offer.
I feel the side labyrinths should have been integrated into the main labyrinth and expanded on. Those were genuinely interesting labyrinth designs, but they're done a disservice by being tucked away and cut off from everything else.
I did like the Golden Lair, though. Its single gimmick was the only one with enough depth to last three floors.

So if you want to be safe your Alchemist can whittle them down on her own. War Magus has enough TEC to help out with some Alchemist Grimoires.
Gunner skills are mixed elemental so they will cause them to spin.
Their spinning also uses their arms so you can bind them to buy a few turns.

I think that's fair enough of a couple of stratums - especially numbers 1 and 4. You mostly do that one FOE motion in various new formations, but still I think those interactions are fun. I think area 2 is a really prime example. The main dungeon is super super short but totally filler free and constantly throwing quality battles your way. It does the teleportation thing in a neat intuitive way and makes sure the FOEs also interact with it. The side dungeons need to be actively unlocked and have a clear identity and challenge. It's not an epic achievement to beat it, but it's still totally distinctive. And has a badass boss without any of the Untold bullshit.

Prayer:Guardian starts at a measly 11% and only gets to 25% at a cost of 22TP - which burns even through a potato's TP pool fairly quickly.
Not to mention you have not too much healing without a Herbalist or a Necromancer...
It will be hard; I would not really recommend it. But it could work if you brace through the pain.

So long story short I got into EO back on the DS days. Beat 1. Bought EOII, went to college, and forgot about it. Years later I have found my old copy of the game and realized that I never made it past the 14th floor. Thing is I have lost any momentum I had going for the game and I want to finish it. I've even forgotten any story bits that have occurred and all I have are vague notes to myself on the map.

Necromancer is the only base class with a party heal and Herbalist has at least a line heal so they can be the only healers and keep your party alive.
Shaman B will eventually have enough passive healing to make due. But without a Dragoon the damage will probably outpace what they offer.
Hound only gets a single target heal before second names come in. Medical Lick takes a lot of skill points to get and is not quite that reliable since it does not heal everyone equally.
But brownies of any kind make good off-healers. Medical Knowledge only costs a single point to get and increases healing with items by 50%.
A Medica that restores 75HP is a substantial heal even up to the second stratum.
So having a potato help out your Hound should be enough to get you through the thick of it - if you have some damage reduction and control on your side.

That's one possibility, yes.
Towards the end of the third floor you will find a ring that works like a Combat Study for your entire guild as long as someone in your active party wears it.
Everyone at home gets half the XP of your active party member so having characters just sit on the sidelines until they can come into the main party does not require as much grinding to catch them up as it used to.

I have a Hound in my Chain Fencer party as my main healer with a Shaman as my offhealer, they're quite decent since I found Necromancers way too OP to be fun.
Combined with the Cestus, they have enough binds between them to keep most FOE locked down and the versatility between also having cheap AOE attacks from the birb is nice.
My main offense is my Nene Chain Fencer.

at level 10, Medical Lick will heal everyone, one person not so much. The doge will also heal one person on your party by about 15% every turn if you dont use a dog skill.
I mean if you're ever really worried about late game burst healing you can use Aegis Shield and Medical Lick and you'll be fine. The best way to avoid damage has always been to bind things so you dont get hit in the first place though. I mean theres this FOE in the third stratum who will literally one shot an entire party if you dont cancel his attack by hitting him, no amount of defense will stop that one.

Letting your enemies freely hit you is never a good idea but it's especially bad if you mainly heal passively.

As boring as Alchemist is to play they are strong and attacking the TEC instead of the VIT can often be important (especially with head bind).
Hexer is not as accurate as in EO2U but fear has a pretty good infliction rate and Muting Word is a great damage increase.
Troubadour can be your main healer although it's not that easy in the beginning. But once they get rolling they keep you alive and give you a damage bonus.
If you like rolling dice Dark Hunter and Hexer are a devestating combo otherwise Landsknecht is a solid frontliner. Nothing exciting but they are sturdy enough your Protector will not constantly need to babysit them. So they are free to use other skills like the Walls or maybe even a Shield Smite here and there.

Or you just don't import Fafnir - EO2U has multiple safeslots so you can easily start a completely fresh file.

Personally, EO succeeds in the combat aspect, primarily because you get plenty of interesting skills and skill interactions to play with. Regardless of optimization, the game lets you experiment with and progress with whatever synergies you conjure. In terms of exploration, the maps feel underwhelming in comparison to traditional DRPGs. It feels like all the challenging dungeons are almost always locked behind post-game.

Early-game usually provides decent challenge, as status effects hit hard. After that, mileage may vary depending on the game/party.

The main reason to play the games are the difficult fights.
Drawing the map is satisfying but you are not really exploring anything worthwhile - there are no interesting vistas and barely any lore or story to lure you in.
The difficulty is the game.
Eo2U bosses are unfortunate because they introduced too much damage on both sides.
Fafnir or Dark Hunter can shred bosses in few turns so they got more HP, bosses can shred your party in a single turn so they got patterns.
Together they make for very swingy bosses - if you don't fully know what you are doing they are brick walls, if you know what you are doing they are pushovers. There is very little in between.

Pushovers? On Expert I thought they were the hardest in the series. The thing I didn't like with them was the rigid attack patterns - I'd rather go into a boss first time with a chance of winning than learn the 'on turn X completely negate attack Y' stuff. Most of them came down to superspecific countermeasures and/or knowing in advance which exact turn to expect adds on in order to then negate their big hit.

That's what I mean though. Hard as in you die a lot. Get into an irretrievable situation on turn one, take a hit so powerful it'll wipe you out through stacked defences. Every other game had a couple of bosses where I just rocked up and won. Even the weaker U2 bosses killed me a couple of times. And the crazy ones I had to away and check a guide for exactly how the pattern worked.
