Retiring in EO and EOII is really weak.
In EO the main reason to do so is some more skill points and a minor stat boost. If you don't absolutely need the skill points it's not worth it.
In EOII it increases the max level by 1 in addition to a stat boost and skill points. Also not really worth it.
Only later in the series (I believe in EOIII even) did retiring at max level give you 10 in each stat (which is a lot) and 10 more skill points and only then is it actually worth it.

Not many classes outside of the cookie cutter builds work for the post-game in EO and EOII.
Alchemist is the only class that is strong early and falls off later - all other weak classes are so the entire game.

EO cookie cutter is Protector, Landsknecht, Medic, Survivalist and Troubadour (although going with an Alchemist instead of the Troub is easier early and mid-game).
EOII is Ronin, Dark Hunter, War Magus, Hexer, Gunner. For some post-game bosses either the Ronin or the Gunner should be replaced by a Protector.
So it's up to you if you want to run a Protector from the beginning. In which case taking Ronin over Gunner should be the way to go.

If you're replacing one of the cookie cutter party, Ronin is the weakest link because it only really serves as make up damage for Dark Hunter and Revenge Hexer. Gunner is also a secondary damage dealer as well but Riot Gun can buy you extra safe turns due to its stun effect which works on pretty much every single enemy.

Ur-Child is pretty bullshit especially since he loves to break and resotre your Force meter.
Like many bosses in EO2U he is heavily pattern based so if you are DPSing him down to fast you can run into a situation where your Force gets destroyed, you push him into the next phase thus skipping the Force restore only to run into a skill that your tank would need to use her Force Break on.

But if you have Fafnir you can kill Ur-Shild in three turns even on expert - two turns to buff/debuff the shit out of Faf and Ur-Child and the third turn you just blow the bastard into the stratosphere.
Not really rewarding but fun at least.

There is a lot of cheese builds out ther - most of which would make terrible normal parties.

Grinding up new characters is super fast in EO2U - drink the XP tea (even without the DLC I'm pretty sure you are quaranteed one of them in a run), switch to Picnic and run in circles, murdering everything in your way just ba keeping the A button pressed (but you must turn off end of turn conformation for that).

So if you are ok with just cheesing Ur-Child I would only worry about that once everything else is done.

Traps would go in the same peudo-buff slot as Boold Surge or Circles.
They would do stuff like "the next X times enemies attack something happens".
Most basic is dealing damage to monsters attacking anyone. To be more useful in boss fights you could have a Compression-like effect that reduces the number of activations but deals more damage.
More specilized traps have stronger effects (more damage and binds, ailments, even stuns) for specific conditions - like stunning the enemy if they attack with a melee bash attack, poisining them when they attack the front line with a physical attack, fearing them when they use an area attack.

The entire War Edge tree is stupid overpowered.
Vampire is so much passive healing Sovereign's get a heart attack and the -cut skills start at 100% base bind chance and grow to something like 160%. Most bind skills cap out at 60% to 80%.
And all you need is an ailment which is so easy to make it stick on enemies with Creeping Curse it's not even funny anymore.

On the other hand you have shit like Chasers where you need to build your entire party around it to get a "kinda nice, I guess" at the end.

Is there a point to the ship mini-game? Do you ever get anything useful?

I did it for a little bit but it seemed like the rewards are self-contained and it's just a money sink.

The classes feel so wonky, the only staples being Hoplite, Monk, and Zodiac. None of them are very well rounded, just used for one or two specific abilities.

Most Limits are obtained there, and some of them are really damn good. You also get to listen to The End of the Raging Waves, which was my main reason to unlock and clear more quests. You also get some cool equipment, although you can easily ignore them and only use what you buy from the store.

Reapers are a mess if you ask me. They have one really good debuff which lowers resistance to Binds and Ailments but everything else is messed up.

Miasma weapon is the biggest issue, you need it up to use most of your attacks. You can invest a crap ton of skills to have it when you start a fight and to help maintain it but you're down 20+ skill points and it eats up turns. Honestly if Miasma weapon just lasted like 5 turns it wouldn't be so bad but your passives like Black Blade will actually reset if you lose Miasma weapon.

Scythe specialty;s best attack requires you to have both Miasma weapon up and an ailment on the enemy. The debuff specialty Scythe of Transience sounds like it would Ecstasy but it resets the debuffs every time and before it hits. So in this regard they're kind of like badDark Hunters when you could just run much better DPS with better skills like Cestus or Masurao.

You could run it as a healing debuff support but then its kind of like a bad Shaman imo.

If anyone else has had any good experience with Reapers I'd like to hear it though.

Can you run from every fight and just farm the resource points so your levels dont get so fucking high?

Without decent gear, you get absolutely rekt.
Without overleveling, most stuff can 2-shot you.

Arbalest is a great class for both single target and AOE. If you add an Arbalest/Gladiator to your party and feed it TP with the Zodiac/protect it with the hoplite you can 2-3 shot every boss in the main game.

Your 5th can be whatever, I used a Wilding/Prince that just spammed Tiger for random encounters and did all the buffing in FOE

I usually go Monk/Princess in the first place since the princess doesnt really need her class skill at all but the Monk healing passive is good for Protect Order.

Whats the rest of your comp? I never really used a main Buccaneer, I liked it as a sub on my Zodiac because of Eagle Eye and Limit Boos. I think they're usually for Shoguns anyway.

The first 2 games require grinding but starting with the third that gets way less.
In EOIII, EOIV and the Untolds it's important to know that armor is rather weak so you only need to upgrade it when it makes a huge difference.
You can safe lots of money by not buying every tiny upgrade there.

The getting 2-shot stuff is by design at least later in the game. You need to be able to kill stuff fast and prioritize your targets.

In EOIII you have Combat Study and in EOV you get an accessory - both of those let your guild members at home get half the XP of an active party member.
Also EO2U and EOV have grinding DLC which make levling up super quick.
