If you're going to try to bleed something out with the WA, you're probably going to need to be at point-blank range. And you can only do it 6 times before running out of ammo. There are no mods for SotFS. What you play is what you get. Even the DS2Fix mod isn't necessary anymore.

Someone told me that they used a different animation tech than they had used in the past or something, not sure how true that is but everything just felt really janky in Dark Souls 2 to me. All of the other common complaints I agree with, but could get past. Can't do the same for the gameplay, just feels bad to play compared to the other games to me.

There's a whole lot that went wrong with the development of Dark Souls 2. Read the Design Works interview after you finish it if you are curious.

R arm light weapon, L arm heavy weapon. R1 to stun, R2 to sweep or poke L1-L1 to kill, L2 to kill faster.
Pump your stamina really high so that you can combo into multiple moves.
Good combos are:
Straight Sword - Greatsword (R1-L1-L1 is an automatic combo on most enemies)

Partizan - Lance (so you maintain a sweeping R2 attack)

The key to a good power stance moveset is having two different R1s, R2s, rolling, and running attacks to swap between. If your L1 moveset is sweeping bashes, then you want pokes for your R hand moveset. If your L1 moveset is overhead smashes, then you want sweeping attacks for your R hand moveset, etc.

They added a lot of sophistication to the movement, to make it less "video game-y", and that instead made it feel really confusing and weird to control. It's also slower so you have to commit to actions more and diminish the effect of button mashing or reaction time

Everything is tied to equip weight % (including walking speed) and it's a gradual decline rather than "classes" like DS1.

Animations are motion captured, so they are slower and more realistic at the cost of feeling weird until you get used to it. You also can't animation cancel as easily, so you're locked in an attack.

Each moveset has it's own custom tracking range (instead of being 360 degrees for all weapons like in DS1) so if you start attacking, you have to stop in order to change direction. Again, it's about forcing players to commit to their attacks and not button mash.

Characters have momentum, so if you are moving in one direction, you tend to keep moving in that direction for a little bit longer even after you stop.

Windup frames are longer so you have to commit to a decision
Overall, DS2 is best when played with an ultra weapon where you hit -once- and plan it out in advance. It's not a fast-paced action game (and neither was DS1) but it's more about position and thinking ahead than it is about reaction time.

Are they good ideas in theory? Yes.

Does it make coming from DS1 feel weird enough to cause people to stop playing the game? Also yes, and that's a huge fucking problem.

It's the biggest reason why DS2 should have just been its own game and not a souls sequel. Too many new ideas that get in the way of what players expected after DS1.

Basically they tried to give DS2 simulator-like movement (like armored core) where you are constantly checking momentum and thinking a few seconds ahead before you press a button instead of fast reaction time ARPG like movement

attacks hitting you before their animations would indicate, animation cancelling, enemies which block without looking as if they're blocking, attacks with almost no start up animations etc are quite common

as for your character, changes to iframes and massive stamina consumption on most actions can be feel off

it's one of those things you just get used to but on your first playthrough (especially if you're coming from dark souls 1) it can feel atrocious

Knight slayer is not something you should have in your build, it's something you should hotswap to if the other guy is a turtling asshole to put them off. Poise has breakpoints, either you have it or you don't. What, you're banking on trading with some other ultra cunt and defeating him through the 80% regen per swing or something? There's no situation where you need 2 ultras equipped at all times, hotswap between them if need be, but it fucking beats me why you'd do that anyway. Also - you have fuckin 50 vitality, that should've tipped you off something is wrong with your build.

I can respect that they tried new things with Dark Souls II and I will admit that it's probably the most balanced PVP Souls from ever made despite hating how it played. That explains some of the issues with the feel of it to me though. Maybe if the animations themselves looked better I could have dealt with it more. From my perspective, the feel was janky right out of the shoot and the stuff I was actually seeing on screen wasn't any better.
