It was never popular in the same areas (US, Canada, Europe) in the areas in which the games you mentioned are popular. No amount of thuggery will ever make it as popular as those games. You mention nobody watching it, but like many people have done time and time again the chinese numbers were never taken into account. Pic related was for a 24 man tournament that Xiaohai and ET were in that took place in guandong province (china) if I'm not mistaken. That tourney had 160,000+ views. America does not make the bulk of the KoF audience, china does and to a smaller extent latin america (but those guys barely stream shit there were fairly important KoF tournaments that weren't even streamed like the Mexico qualifier).
Also the US tournaments you mentioned while fairly large (EVO being big enough to be an international tournament) are primarily based in the US. I don't know if you've noticed, the US has fairly strict visa requirements for the areas in which KoF excels at. It is a coincidence, but one that could have impact to tourney #s of KoF in the US. Few people meet those requirements. There will be EVO Japan and Japan has little to no visa requirements for those areas. If they do visas are processed in a couple weeks (mentioned in jap embassy websites). The chinese guy who lost his visa, Toshi and Frionel got theirs really quickly. There is also no requiremts for Mexico and I think brazil. More players can make it if they have the money to make the trip.

I'm not worried for KOF's life in those countries, because over there it's even bigger than SF is. I'm tired of KOF being a "dead game" in the West, and basically being the poster child for 15 person tournaments. The devs have done everything they can to make a quality product, and overseas competition is as strong as it's ever been. The problem is with the Western scene, because they're not doing anything to make the game look appealing or interesting. They don't have to stoop to WHO BITCH THIS IS levels of thuggery, but I wish I could be invested watching KOF. The only players with actual personalities I can think of are Xiaohai and Laban. Keep in mind, I say this as someone who actually does spend money and time going to events, so I'm not asking for change I'm too lazy to support.

Speaking of money, very few KoF players are sponsored and have jobs/families that depend on them and as such not many can make as many trips as players for other games. Also SNK despite having recent successes, does not have as deep pockets as Capcom, NRS, Microsoft to throw money into the competitive scene and make events with big pot bonuses like capcom cup. I can bet a good reason that a nice chunk of pro players are drawn to those games besides their popularity is the pot bonuses, aka money. Some of those pro players made a career out of it. Money is something SNK does not have too much of, nor does KoF have huge enough numbers to raise such amounts of moey for tournaments in the USA. It all boils down to popularity/numbers which KoF doesn't have in the US/west to begin with or money. Or it could be (like that survey results that was going around for the japs) that many just don't care about being competitive. Same survey showed that about half of the western KoF players in the west had even gone to a tournament, that's an even smaller number compared to KoF already minuscule foothold in the US. It's not that SNK is doing much, it's that they can't.

If one is watching the game for the personalities playing it, as much as I enjoy Laban's shenanigans and xiaohai (I really do), then isn't support for the game itself suspect or dubious at best? I mean those moments can be hype, but let's not forget the real star of those events is the game.

TL;DR competitive scene is dead in the water in the US and rest of the west due to several factors. No amount of thuggery or chimping out will fix that.

Since I brought in the survey and I am scientifically minded, I guess an experiment can be done. What if a KoF tournament is organized and players are encouraged to pop off and take a part in thuggery as much as they want, or they are encouraged to do that in an already upcoming tournament? We'll be able to see how many of the players actually take part in that and viewers' reactions can be gauged or encouraged to give their reactions. We can see if viewer ship does go up or stays the same or whether people enjoy the pop offs and thuggery or if they don't. Just so you know not much of that happened in the chinese tournaments with those huge viewer numbers. Also those views were there because of the series's already established popularity. Sure a factor for there being no pop off in those tournaments could be a different culture, but the chinese are nowhere near as reserved as the Japanese. Some of them will tell you upfront if you've gotten fat for example.
If viewer numbers rise after a few tournaments like that then it'll support your theory of popoffs and thuggery giving views, but if viewer numbers don't go up or if they fall it'll support my theory that thuggery will not make a difference in regards to KoF. I need to warn that there could be unintended results or factors, it could be that tournament players refuse to take part in thuggery or it could even turn viewers away from it.

I'll say it again some celebration or friendly shenanigans can be nice and hype, but if things go south it's a slippery slope which can have various unintended consequences. While they can be nice the main star of the events and tournaments is the game and we must not forget that.

I'm tired of SFV and Tekken isn't for me since I prefer 2D fighters. Is King of Fighter XIV worth picking up now? Is the game any fun? Is the online active? I'm playing on PS4.

-It is absolutely worth picking up. The roster is incredibly solid and most characters are viably competitively. The mechanics are deep enough to make learning them worthwhile but not too obtuse to scare newcomer players.

-Is a lot of fun and is not rare to see some impressive upsets and clutches at high level play.

-Is pretty active although only on free matches. Ranked is active only at specific times and there aren't a lot of players playing Ranked nowadays.

As mentioned earlier they don't have the money to make huge pot bonuses nor is KoF popular enough to raise the money. Sure SNK or ATLUS have given $500-$1000 before, but that was very seldom. I can only think of 2 or 3 times in which that happened. I think for the Mexican one in Tijuana they were only able to give $200. As mentioned above some pros are attracted to the money and even made a career out of it, no way they have the funds for that. Sure they've been taking in money with the mobile sales, but they have their offices in Osaka and Tokyo to maintain as well as their division in China. They have to pay employee salaries from VA's to directors, artists, their newly acquired accountants, their developers for their projects and even the janitors that clean their toilets. That shit ain't cheap.

Also it's not like they're not helping in other ways, they do have their e-sports support program which was expanded when 2.0 was released not just for KoF XIV, but for any SNK fighting game, as well as promoting the event on their social media and sending some swag. Pretty much the only requirements are that at least 20 people take part and you let them know in time. Support on their behalf definitely is there, but some people seem to forget about it and of those who don't they forget that it's not just exclusive to XIV. They're just limited as to what they can do.

I remember reading a rumor from somewhere else that supposedly later in the year capcom will be relaunching SFV as Super SFV as a free update for those who have it with new (returning characters). The characters were the exact same ones that Alex valle tweeted saying something like: people would freak if capcom announced: Q, Oro, Sakura, etc, etc. I forgot the rest, but the tweet is there and can be found if one searches far back enough.

Basically FF1 with Kyo and Orochi shenanigans shoehorned in. I believe it was mentioned in the chinese website this was announced at first a while back that the first season would cover the events of FF1 and if there were more that it'd flow into KoF.
Fucking Clark has shown up in screenshots and other trailers, so maybe they're just observing Geese or other shenanigans. Since it also shows the Kyokugens in their KoF ages I guess it supports what was mentioned and it'll be a precursor to KoF.

Sadly I wouldn't recommend it, the game is alot of fun and if you are fine with singleplayer you will probably get your moneys worth. But if you want online games then stay away. Ranked is pretty much dead and there's not that many rooms either. Today I've gotten maybe 3 ranked games and all of them with terrible connection, if I pick anything but "any" on connection quality I won't find a game. Same goes for free matches, I have only been able to connect to the same mexican room all day, obviously with shit connection. I agree with the way certain games have been handled and money being a primary reason for some people competing/pushing a game I thought something like this would happen eventually. Numbers are all down across the board except for tekken which are practically the same (I thought there would be a lot more since it got a home release). In KoF's case (not saying it's gonna happen), but I wouldn't even be mad if SNK decided to focus primarily on China and nearly ignored the US since it never had a stronghold there in the first place. Sure, it would mean that they could get some shirts and stuff for their tournament and announced on SNK's twitter page, but how many other American TOs that are holding tournaments for SNK fighting games that aren't XIV? I mean other than that there's not much else that can be done by them other than throwing money at them which they can barely even do.
Only thing that could be done is to keep going to locals and tournaments consistently, but as many KoF players aren't sponsored they can't attend everything. Also since it doesn't get much attention in the US it means no sponsors, it's a vicious cycle. That money most likely would need to come out of pocket and since a lot of KoF players probably have families and responsibilities their money would need to go towards that. No $$$ or no time because of a job means no travel, which means no tournament attendance. I think the community needs to grow as the current one despite being very dedicated is pretty damn small in the US and won't be able to support it forever, with no new people that means no growth.
Apparently some people are saying that KoF is too hard. Whether true or false apparently it is something else that keeps people from jumping in. You and I might know that's not true, but try to look at it from the point of view from someone who has never played KoF or a fighting game, it can look daunting. Maybe some sort of new player outreach/tutoring can be done encouraging new players to jump in? The few newer people I've seen on twitter have mentioned that the community has been very welcoming, so using that to gain people could be a thing. Maybe encouraging some tutoring at events or having some KoF players who stream do a tutorial session every once in a while? Hell in the steam discussions I've seen people asking if online training can be implemented (I know it already is at least on PS4, but I guess people seem to be ignoring it?). Maybe online rooms for beginners can be done and advertised?

I have a friend that plays almost every fighter and at a very competent level. Understands mindgames and can combo pretty well, but for some reason I could never get them into KoF. They found the game too difficult compared to other fighters. They even found Guilty Gear to be easier to understand.

Even with XIV's 50+ roster they could only find two characters they enjoyed. I tried linking all the resources I could to get them into the game but the game just wouldn't click with them. Considering how unpopular KoF is in western countries I'm starting to think maybe there's a reason why.

No need to worry about that. The pachi division is long dead (2015 I think?) and SNK decided to focus on games again whether on console, mobile, or arcade). I mean keeping their pachinko division would have killed them especially with the new pachilot regulations that were implemented in japan at the time. I don't know the exact details of the law, but part of it dealt with the chance time of the pachislots and that would have required SNK to modify the vast majority of their machines. Modifying those machines would have likely killed them since they were bleeding money at the time, so they just said fuck it and cut their losses leaving them with less than 200 people on the payroll. There was a youtube video that kinda explained the subject (the guy actually pulled out the law and explained what it meant), but I forgot the title of it.

Probably, I've seen a few people on twitter say that they feel overwhelmed by the size of the roster or ask what characters they should start with, even here on 4chan and on these very threads and often times people tell them to pick whoever they think is cool or give them a long list of characters, there's nothing necessarily wrong with the list, but maybe people need advice that's a bit more specific. Which is why I mentioned tutoring at local events or tournaments during casuals, or having players who stream hold a tutoring sessions from time to time, taking advantage of the online training mode that's already in the game or hosting rooms for beginners. I've seen many say that they're confused about how canceling works, or that it looks really hard. Maybe asking newer people what they feel confused about could be a start and putting it in terms that they can understand could be a start. Maybe a survey to start things?

For the west it means absolutely nothing since arcades are dead here. Maybe, just maybe if one is lucky one will see a couple arcades across the US. I mean there was a tekken 7 machine at the arcade in the mall nearest to my house which is still an hour long bus ride away.
The arcade release is primarily for Japan. Arcades might be declining there, but they are still pretty big over there. Yes, Japan may be sony territory, but a lot of people still game for arcades. I don't know if china will get any arcades since I don't know about the arcade situation over there, but I remember reading that gaming in places like netcafés is popular.
The arcade version is up to date with all the DLC that's been released. I remember reading that they promised china something like a DLC costume per month for a year (12 costumes?) in one of their bundles (I think it mighthave been their KoF XIV PS4 bundle with a console, XIV, 2 controllers and playstation plus included), but there's already 10 DLC costumes released. For now they seem to be done with DLC unless announced at a later date. Perhaps at evo, TGS or PSX if they choose to announce anything. As for balance patches who knows, Maybe? The majority of the roster is pretty vialble except for a select few that are out. A few top players have put up their trier lists if you care about that stuff and very few characters are considered outright weak.

As mentioned before the arcade version will be up to date to the latest patch on PS4, DLC and everything. The chizuru leak was never real. It was confirmed fake by an SNK employee. It was a mistake at the Chinese conference. The pic had been shown before in the same conference to be Chizuru's Icon for the KoFW RPG. Also even before the conference (a couple months), when pictures of Chizuru in KoFW surfaced that Icon surfaced too. The Chizuru rumor was mainly perpetrated and spread by a twitter user Yuki_Yagami. I don't know where they heard it from, but they took it and ran with it because that person has a huge disdain/dislike of the pachi charcters. Alice basically embodying South Town with her attacks referencing multiple other characters was a brilliant move, compared to the more flat "Terry fangirl" factor that was expected of her - I hope they keep playing that up and letting her become a bit more serious, at least outfit-wise, without losing her sense of fun.

Yuri went from damsel in distress to Kyokugenryuu-competent in one game/year, evolution is hopefully within Alice's reach.

Just give her a DLC outfit with proper shorts or pants and a "I <3 ST" (I love South Town) t-shirt, and she'll be well on her way to a more reasonable path - kinda how shun'ei's kung fu outfit helped clear the clutter from his design.

Yeah, the man basically lost his most famous fights (1 to Ryo, 2 to Terry), and was ultimately only successful in beating Jeff and the Jins, as far as major events depicted in the games.

Still, the guy's got a history one can respect: as a kid travelled all the way to Germany to beat the shit out of his biological father, even if he got his ass kicked by his younger half-brother, trained himself under multiple martial arts masters (Tung and Suo Tatsumi (Mary's grandfather)), joined the police, became a commissioner, used that role to usurp Mr Big's role in the city's underworld, got Takuma to do his dirty work, beat Jeff to death (even if Jeff was supposed to be the better student of Tung's), acquired an arena he named after himself, then a whole tower, basically took control of the whole city, helped make that city a Mecca to martial arts, managed to develop his own fighting style that in his mature years no longer fully resembled his masters', inspires incredible loyalty among his men, somehow along the way managed to find some time for a wife and a kid, and acquired the Jin scrolls, which apparently before his last major efforts were spread among 3 continents.

He lost fights, but I can find it in me to respect the man's accomplishments.

Don't know much about recent Tekken, but I remember reaing that the people snooping around in Tekken 7's data found out and mentioned that one of the guest characters would have an air projectile and use ex moves like Akuma as well as shoot projectiles wile on the ground like Eliza/Akuma what are the chances it'd be Geese. IF it somehow turns out to be him what route could be taken in regards to his moves? Would they make him more like a Tekken character (it could fit since longer combos are possible in recent KoFs it's not too fr fetched that they can find a way to make him move more like a Tekken character), would his deadly Rave be in the form of a combo or would it be a rage art? Or would they basically just make him play like he does in KoF except just in Tekken?

I could imagine his 10-hit finishing like the deadly rave, maybe even executed in a close enough manner, considering how they adapted Gouki.

Tekken would be able to reference normal moves from just about every single version of Geese out there (maybe even the AoF2 one), which would build up to a decent arsenal - I think DoA5LR managed to pull off something similar with Mai, and that game is even less projectile-prone than Tekken is nowadays.

I figure Rising Storm would be the Rage art, even if it means using a Neowave take where that's just the finisher to a autocombo.

As long as your computer meets the minimum requirements and you have all your drivers updated you should be mostly fine. I would suggest tat your rig meets the recommended specs though. Many of the issues that people have brought up either have to do with what was mentioned (drivers) or because of compatibility issues with certain graphics cards. As for netplay as long as you and your opponent have decent connections and aren't playing on wifi you should be pretty good, as with the PS4 version. I've heard people say that the netcode is better than Tekken, but I wouldn't know since I don't own tekken. As for the number of players online it's lower during daylight burger hours, but it peaks during Japan/china evening hours hours (between like 3-6 AM pacific). Goes along with it's popularity (low in the US/Europe, high in china). You'll find more people playing in lobbies rather than in ranked.

Played both, and they're about equal. Your threshold in Tekken 7 PC is around 3/5 bars, while at KOF it should be around 3/4 bars. 2 bar connections have a small tendency to be bad.

As always, it may differ to you depending on several other factors, like your ISP and if your opponent is using WiFi for instance.

Some people are basically sating that e-sports are a cause of this, some explain why. To be honest I feel like I agree. Players playing for money rather than for fun, all the shilling going around, the lack of pot bonuses for other games causing players to not be interested, which leads to less people playing means less people watching which means less players getting sponsored (some sponsors are big on views), which means less players traveling around and entering tournaments, some games being habdled like shit which leads to them having bad aspects which means people hating them, but playing them for money, increasing tournament fee, all of that.
E-sports, at least in regards to fighting games, was a mistake and a bubble that was eventually going to pop.
