We do need CRC32s in the bin if not in the file names - it's short, quick to calculate (even 7-Zip can do it) and most fansubbers add it to their releases too.

I've considered that, when aiming for low xdelta in-place replacement is optimal. For low torrent difference(specifically, number of changed segments) however we can't insert additional bytes. Additionally for v1 archives, since v1 does not store explicit offsets the size has to be unchanged(or we would have to append junk data to the file). For v3 archives we can leave a gap, since offsets are stored explicitly in the TOC.
This does reduce the filesize, and in some cases can reduce the torrent difference as well, but i'll leave out why here for brevity, ask if you want me to post it.

However, there is something very nice we can do if we leave the original files intact. If we store a mapping of dummy name->original name, either appended to the archive(RGSSv3) or as an extra file inside the archive(v1) we can easily restore the original archive by restoring the original names and assigning dummy names to the translated replacement files. This is also easily reversible. In practice this would allow adding my tool + a batch file "Switch game to Japanese" and a batch file "Switch game to English".
