Reposting not for (You)s but for the sake of motivation:

There's something that bothers me about people struggling with creativity. They tend to think their ideas are bad and that they're not creative enough to make original or new things, and this drives them to doubt their ability to create things.

I'm here to tell you that this train of thought is bullshit. Being creative doesn't mean you have to make new things from scratch - sometimes creativity means giving your own unique vision to things that you've seen done before. Maybe you think that you're doing a 1:1 carbon copy of something that's already done, but your direct input affects the outcome on a scale that you wouldn't even believe.

I've seen the same tropes being done over and over again, and yet they always have their unique flavor to them. Even if most of their elements are borrowed or are a direct reference to something that was already created, byproducts of these core ideas filtered through a new mind's filters make a world of difference among them.

What I'm trying to say is, don't beat yourself up because you can't come up with new things. Sometimes using things that were already done and building on them in your own way is enough for you to make a masterpiece. Keep it up!

Relying on tropes is shit and no amount of unique snowflake sauce will change that, get better ideas.
You can execute tropes very well despite being unoriginal, but that doesn't mean you should settle for the lazy way out.

Change it up and make it an actual spider bumbling around a household:
>Maintain a routine of web checking for traped prey in different locations around rooms.
>Murdering other spiders that step to you.
>Participate in spider dance-offs to impress a mate.
>Eat your partner
>Eat your children
>Get eaten by your children
>Talk to a pig using your webs
>Bite nerds
>Engage in a nailbiting basement duel with the homeowner armed with a nailgun

I find blueprinting in Unreal is comfy af, but I only have like ~5 hours of experience so far and another Anon said anything it makes is like 70MB minimum, which is a turn off with small phone storage
>>
>>175795745
UE4 is way overkill for a UI game.
>>
>>175795673
Nobody's gonna make it but it sure does sound fun.
>>
>>175795458
It's actually a very original idea (and I'm actually developing it so no ideaguying), the thing about being original is that you naturally lose some mass appeal points and it's hard to resist watering down your idea for the sake of making it more accessible. But hopefully I will stand my ground until the end and finish exactly what I want to make.

Like I said, you can execute a tired idea very well but it will still be a tired idea, I'm a much bigger fan of "controversial" ideas that might turn off most people than the safe games that try their hardest to be as inoffensive as possible.
And that's what most highly derivative games aim to be, simply something safe that can be enjoyed by most people.

I'm probably the minority here but I think artistic expression is the most important aspect of a game.

At the end of the day it's still UE4, it is not a 2D engine and it cannot run as efficiently as one.

If all you want is 2D, let alone a UI-based game, then there are better choices, though it's a shame because UE4's UI tools are actually really nice.

>>
>>175797267
Sure, but the key is in making sure that you don't simply combine the same ideas everyone else combined in the same manner.
It even makes sense from an economical standpoint too, most hits are usually from neglected genres and/or had unique settings they weren't done often before in games.

If people started taking ideas from books and other media instead of simply other games or mainstream shit then game concepts and plots wouldn't be considered such a joke.

So let's say I have a giant building and it has floors and rooms that the player views as a cross-section. Every time you load the game, the room location would be randomized as shown in the picture. The items contained inside the room would also be minimally random.

I understand how I could do this in an array, but, would those rooms be "objects"? Can objects contain sub-objects they are bundled with? If I spawned a bathroom "object" I would want a toilet "object" to spawn with it, etc.

Hey /agdg/, do you know of any really phenomenal ways of learning Unity?

I have experience with C++ and have actually been working through a tutorial course on Udemy, but as I'm approaching the end of the course I still don't feel like anything *clicks* in my head.

Whenever I come up with a game idea there just seems to be huge gaps in my understanding that prevent me from making anything substantial.

I already asked you a rhetorical question intended to make evident the fault in your reasoning, but okay, we'll do things your way.

Why does a room need to be an object when you can simply assign a variable to a position in a grid on world generation and then generate a portion of your level based on different sets of instructions that correspond to different variables in the grid? You don't need to make rooms objects just because "game maker uses objects", that's a bad approach. You need to think of how you can solve your problems with code whenever possible; unnecessarily using objects is a drain on performance because of all the variables they inherently contain.

You animate like the player can't use any other fingers than his index finger and thumb. When cycling a bolt action rifle you'd normally use your lower palm to easily grip the bolt handle. The stripper clip will normally fly away automatically so wasting time for the soldier to manually flick it away is not necessary but that's just a minor thing.

I have grown up with firearms my whole life and own plenty, I have never once chambered a bolt gun with my palm facing the bolt. Doing that is incredibly uncomfortable to me. And in most cases you rarely use anything but your thumb and index to do anything.. maybe your middle finger sometimes if the charging handle is long enough for it.

The flick thing is because we needed a tiny bit of penalty for letting it run empty and my team likes it.

I keep trying WHILE feeling suicidal.

I've struggled with suicidal impulses since I was very young. It's only in the past few years that I've had entire weeks of freedom from it, but it still comes back now and then. I have to remind myself to take care of the basics: Eat food, get enough sleep, drink water, exercise, go outside during the day. I take vitamin D supplements. I moved out of a place with mold in the walls. The problem isn't gone but it's much easier to manage when I'm able to keep up a habit of taking care of myself.

Yes, you can make a good game with a shit uninteresting story but the shit uninteresting story is still a shit uninteresting story.
No, your story isn't more interesting or any less tropish just because you added some extra flair to it, you can fool some mongoloids who don't know any better into thinking that your story is in any way interesting and original but shit won't fly for the rest of the people and your story still has no value at all.

What I'm saying is not even elitist or hipsterish, games have horrible writing and that's a fact.

New game dev here, working in Godot. Can someone here tell me why my code sucks? I'm new to working with code and 3D math and this is the first thing I haven't been able to figure out by banging my head against it.

I want to smoothly rotate the player's camera to look at an object in the scene using quaternions. So. I'm having a dummy camera look_at() the object, (I know this works correctly) then storing its rotation as a quaternion along with my main camera. Then, in a while loop, I'm trying to make my main camera rotate until it matches the dummy camera's stored rotation by setting its transform on every loop while interpolating its current rotation with the stored target rotation. Most of the documentation I've found on Quats in this way seems to suggest this should work fairly simply.

Problem is, calling this function just makes my game hang. (Not a crash or code error, just freezes and has to be closed manually.) I've tried several different iterations of this code and all of them have crashed similarly.

I have my suspicions about the problem but maybe someone smart/experienced can tell me what I'm doing wrong here, or if I'm just retarded and need to kill myself. Thanks.

If it's freezing then some loop is running forever, in this case the while loop.
The currentfocus is never becoming equal to targetfocus for some reason, I don't know shit about 3D math but you should use print commands to check and compare values, it's also a good idea to avoid loops in general when dealing with float math and such since it's so easy to get rounding errors.
>>
>>175811004
>calling this function just makes my game hang
dont know godotscript, but usually anything that causes the game to freeze is because of an infinite loop.

comment out the "get_node" inside the while loop. if it doesnt hang, then there's your problem.

When working with numbers that use floats, don't check if they are exactly equal. They will never be exactly equal unless you set them exactly equal.

A while loop will freeze the game until it is completed. Use the _process() function to calculate the lerp every frame.

Also there is an interpolated camera node, which will let you smoothly swap camera positions, even FOV and other settings if you need that.

>Are you making lot's of notepad ++ files with codes in them written in C++ to later compile it all in a game

not quite. I'm actually coding c++ in the codeblocks ide and its using the gcc compiler.

A framework is usually a library or a collection of files/classes/functionality that you can access using a coding language by calling their api. some anons might call it engine deving, but for me personally it provides quite a bit of control without using pure opengl and wishing you were dead.
>>
>>175811504

Ah, thanks for the tip on float numbers, that's helpful. I suspected part of the problem was that both of my functions are outside of my main _process() loop. I wasn't sure if using that loop to calculate would be proper, but I will try it. Thank you.

I saw the interpolated camera, but couldn't figure out how to make it do what I wanted. It might have to do with how my player entity is constructed. I will experiment some more.

In a 52 card deck thats 1040 card switches which is pretty fucking shuffled.

You don't need two tables.

card[] cards [52]
int slot
card cardA
card cardB

{
slot = randNum.Next(0, cards.length)
carda = cards[slot]
cardb = cards[randNum.Next(0, cards.length)]
cards[slot] = cardb
cards[randNum.next(0, cards.length)] = carda
}

eg generate a random number between 0-51.

Straight down is stuff like Hotline Miami, LttP is actually a weird mix of perspectives depending on the object but it's mostly 3/4.
You can see both the front and backs of houses for example and that makes no physical sense but it looks good.
And that's really the best way to go about it, draw whatever looks best and don't worry too much about logic.

The geometry depicted in that screenshot is intended to represent vertical rock structures viewed at an angle the exact same way that Link's angled model is intended to depict a vertically standing elfboy viewed at an angle. Not in 2D Zelda you can't, and neither are the rock formations in Zelda intended to represent perfectly realistic rock formations.

Another example.

You can see the north walls even though the south walls are angled by about 45 degrees, that would be impossible in a logical perspective.

You're probably misreading the situation. At least if you're half as retarded as the average AGDGer.

People overlook bad graphics for good gameplay.
People overlook everything if you're fulfilling a niche that they love but is neglected by other devs.
And then there's good advertising / games that are easier to go viral despite being shit

Have any games in mind that you think are shit but are "moderately successful"? We could probably point out why they got that way.

To anyone making platformers or action games in Game Maker with uncapped FPS, how do you deal with your delta?

Switching from 3000 FPS to 60 FPS gives very different and wonky results, but switching from 60 to 30 seems to be fine. It's almost like the steps don't run as many times as the engine is telling me they are.
I don't know what else to do save from just capping the FPS at 60.
>>
>>175827295
Is that GMS?
>>
>>175827295
Pretty cool
>>
>>175827308
fps is different from real fps in gamemaker
The number of steps you get in a second is equal to the room speed. It will never be more than that.

I handle my delta with a variable global.delta that's basically (how long the last step actually took) / (how long the last step should have taken)

Every time dependent counter or variable is multiplied by this delta. So if the last step took twice as long as it should have, global.delta = 2 and all counters and such increase twice as much to account for this

the delta_time function gives you the microseconds (I think?) since the last step. It's pretty simple math to determine how many microseconds you want between steps for 60 fps.

I'm about to head to sleep, but I'll let you know my basic procedures for some fun delta stuff
Pic related is essentially all my delta timing stuff. This runs in the begin step of an fps controller object. the first line sets what global.delta is (targetFPS is a macro I set, it just equals 60).

Using this method also allows me to play with the flow of time in my game, as setting it to a low value will make everything move n slowmotion. This is where the rest of it comes in. If I want something to trigger slow-mo, it sets global.diffDelta to true, then sets a new delta thats imposed by global.newDelta. global.delta2 is the same as global.delta, but it never gets altered, so if theres a time dependent function that needs to run normally while everything else is slowed (like measuring how long the slow-mo should last, for example), global.delta2 is used there.

The whole slow-motion trick is actually a good way to make sure your game is perfectly delta-timed. If you slow it all down and something stays normal speed then you know it's not using delta time

I hope this helped

>>175827989
Thanks! They're both great tools. The instance_create thing is weird, but I'm sure there's a lot of flexibility with the new system. I'm still in GMS1, but GMS2 has some real neat quality of life improvements. You'll make some great stuff with it :)

We're quickly moving to the 'adding content' part and we're both really happy about that. I'm looking forward to letting you guys try the game at DD15.

I don't know if you'll read this but I've been there before. The gaps in your mind will be subconsciously filled once you get your hands busy making games.

Don't listen to the memes here, Unity is really good both for starters and experts ( like me).
I think you should try making a Pong clone, that will teach you the basic workflow of Unity as well as help you translate your scattered knowledge of C++ to a gamedev context.

Then you work on some one-screen score-based game that's as small as you can think of. That will teach you how to materialize your own original idea into a game.

By then you'll have a clear vision of what's needed to make a game. It's an exciting phase desu because you'll start thinking of the various ways you can use the engine and set free your imagination.

Just remember to always start small. And just like make game my friend!
Good luck.

I dunno bro. First you should decide on which modeling program you're going to use.
We have a 3D board you could take a look at their sticky or ask around there >>>/3/
If you want to use blender you could look at some blender tutorials there is a bunch of videos on youtube and there is also a tutorial section in the official blender website. There's also a book on wikibooks "Blender 3D: Noob to Pro" which is pretty good but IIRC it teaches more about some theory and about the program than about practice.
If you're willing to be forced to register and account and pay real shekels for premium tutorials there is CgCookie. You could pirate them but that would be illegal.

There's normally 2 types of keyboard events: key press/release and text input. Should be the same in gamemaker I guess. If you want the user to press the "key under escape" (regardless of what character it corresponds to), you should figure out its scancode (or whatever it is in gamemaker) and use the key press (or release) event. If you want the user to input a particular character, use the text input event.

Tried with:

var chra = keyboard_lastkey;
draw_text(x, y, chr(chra));

prints any number/letter right, but with § appears nothing.

Using default font so it should appear.
>>
>>175840836
Actually, there are both keyboard_lastkey and keyboard_lastchar. That's what I'm talking to. The key under escape might actually have the code of '~' regardless of the actual layout.
>>
>>175841190
Try printing lastkey and lastchar to console with show_debug_message, you probably can hardcore lastkey, or copy the char from the console even if it's invisible there

guys, whats your best ideas on how i can get rid of these artifacts in simplex noise?
highlighted the simplex lattice in green.
i thought simplex noise was supposed to not have any artifacts.
my intuition tells me its because of the unaccounted for contributions of neighboring cells, as all the artifacts are exclusivly on the boundaries of the simplex cells

So I looked u a bit more and there are actually three layers: key location (e.g., "where w is on a qwerty keyboard"), key meaning in the layout (e.g., same physical key will be w in qwerty and a in azerty), and produced character ('w' or 'W' or 'a' or 'A'). SDL2 allows to access all 3 notions, but some other libraries/engines seem to only have 2.

Look, having games—my uncle was a great dev and artist and director; good games, very good games, OK, very smart, the DigiPen Institute of Technology, very good, very smart—you know, if you’re an FPS dev, if I were a walking simulator dev, if, like, OK, if I devved a walking simulator, they would say I'm one of the smartest people anywhere in the world—it’s true!—but when you're an FPS dev they try—oh, do they do a number—that’s why I always start off: Went to DigiPen, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune—you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged—but you look at the game deal, the thing that really bothers me—it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these players are (games are powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 25 years ago; he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was right—who would have thought?), but when you look at what's going on with the three consoles—now it used to be two, now it’s three—but when it was two and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they haven’t figured that the walking simulator devs are smarter right now than the FPS devs, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 30 years—but the Canadians are great devs, the Indians are great devs, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us.

What is better for game - interpolate walking character position between animation frames or not?
Interpolated looks more smooth but frames without interpolation make more solid contact with ground and make more "walking" feel instead of "floating". But it comes out jerky with 8-frames walk cycle.

delta_time is automatically in microseconds in GMS

>>175828807
Room speed is 60, I typically get 60 steps per second. I think you're confusing fps_real, which I think is the number of steps per second, with the fps variable, which returns the number of cpu cycles a minute, and can be much higher than room speed. You don't really need to worry about fps, fps_real is what you're looking for. I might have gotten the names flipped, but it will be obvious which is correct

Is there a 2D game engine that's not as bare-bones as C++ with SDL/SFML, but more complex than GameMaker?

I don't want to reinvent the wheel if possible, but the lack of enums or any sort of user defined structures like 2D vectors/rectangles in GM is fucking killing me. Want to make operations or pass rects as arguments? Hope you enjoy juggling with var, var, var, var.

It's like an open source, free Game Maker Studio that can also do 3d and has fewer drag-and-drop features, with its own scripting language based on Python. It can compile programs for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and I believe can export to HTML5 as well.
>>
>>175846767
Calling it a free GMS is an insult tbqh, it's leagues above it.
>>
>>175846940
Yeah, I was just thinking it's similar in that you drag-and-drop objects into a level and script their functionality. But I guess that's true for Unity and others as well.
>>
>>175846451
Godot has proper delta time implementation, unlike GMS. You can actually make a game that is FPS independent and it will work perfectly.

If you think you can get any useful feedback out of it then sure, even something as simple as character movement requires playtesting too.
Exporting, uploading and presenting your game is also an useful learning experience.
>>
>>175847349
Depends, if you don't really care about that tutorial game you don't really need to post it. But if you plan on continuing to expand the game into a more serious prototype, go ahead and post screenshots and stuff. If you've got a demo ready you can post that, but if not it's not a big deal.

Nah, I don't need any feedback yet. I was only going to post to because Anon made it seem like he just wanted more games available.

It's a 2D platformer, and the first game I make is going to be a point and click physics puzzle (I want to start small), so it's not really expandable into that.

Thanks for the responses, hopefully I stick with it and have something real (and better since experience) for the next demo day.

>>175851164
I'm more tempted every time I try to talk to him about it.

>>175851157
If they don't have a contract then the other guy still owns all the work he made and anon can't use it without permission.

>decides to be a shitposting failed gamedev instead of failed animator
Should have stuck with the animator googs. Now you have a 4 year smear of feces on your reputation that not even the best animation and writing and voice acting can make people like you and your work.

You are a case study in someone with an out of control ego sacrificing what talents he has on the altar of his own rancid personality and refusing to change.

Not just someone. The gogem. Our gogem.

If it ain't broken don't fix it

Maybe don't deliberately make something broken and then act smug that it still works because engineers accounted for people being retarded.
