/indie/ - Indie and Obscure Games General

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Thread replies: 754
Thread images: 142

Last thread: >>174436259

>What the fuck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Middens, Underrail, Machinarium, DashBored, Vampire of the Sands, Braid, Limbo, Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, The Desolate Hope, Burrito Galaxy, Gone Home, Stardew Valley, etc. as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Rayman, Pillars Of Eternity, Rise Of Nations, and Valkyria Chronicles. Absorbed the /lite/ general some time ago.

Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads (since they have no other home in /vg/), however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>How can I contribute?
All we need right now is people to talk about their loved indie and miscellaneous games, so don't be afraid to post, bump and reply your fellow anons. Also we're looking for anons to make new pastebins/wikis/images and update the ones already made. And please give lots of feel, love, kind and nice to everyone, except namefags. And be sure to make a new thread if nobody else does.

"I want everyone to enjoy this game at a cheap price, but you can buy the OST if you want to support us further".

Also it's a price anchoring trick. You're more likely to buy the game if there's something more expensive nearby. Not sure it's particularly relevant at this price point but yeah

And it's also pretty shoddily taped together, triggers for talking and interaction are finnicky and sometimes glitch out.
Quite fun tho and incorporates some interesting mechanics with the whole "You can jump 7 times" thing.

I don't understand OFF.
The Batter is the only one with a true intention. Yet so far, his skills are about observation and healing.

The add-ons, who are the real hitters, have no will on their own.
>>
>>174809965
The batter is a tool too. It's literally his name.
You are the person making decisions.
>>
>>174809965
It's been a while since I actually played off but I remember he had a lot of good attacks.
>>
>>174810363
I'm making any decision, I'm just guiding him. I know the road, but I don't know where it leads to.

This is why I stopped playing that game the first time : no clue what the fuck was going on.
Well, that, and the puzzle with the Megadrive controller.
>>
>>174810546
yea a lot of the puzzles were too tough for me and I had to just look them up

just keep going, you'll get to the end soon enough, partner
>>
>>174810867
But it raises another question : do I really want to? Last time I played, I gave up in the third zone, but I saw what happened to the first two zones (Japhet's theme is ear sex by the way).
>>
>>174811183
When I started playing the game I just sat there for a few minutes because holy shit pepper steak is some good music
>>
>>174811274
Without the music, I probably wouldn't be replaying it.
I mostly just want to ear Japhet's theme again and the Race Of A Thousand Pounds in context.
>>

I always liked race of a thousand ants better, but yea that's good too.

You'd be correct, sir.

On a somewhat related note, a few years ago I was listening to it on loop while doing some stuff for my grandpa and he wanted to know what I was listening to because "it sounds like what the commies would use to brainwash someone".

He's not really political or even that paranoid, so it was pretty weird.

>>174812969
Possibly, a lot of music I like is like that.

Proper usage of leitmotifs across an OST is the best shit ever, and while it's not used a whole lot in OFF it's still one of the best soundtracks from a small indie game I've ever heard.
>>
>>174812852
Well, are you a commie?
>>
>>174813202
I tend to like music like that too. Especially when the leitmotiv is drowned under another melody. Strangely, that's usually a lot of games OSTs.

No, but under 1950s paranoia I certainly would be.

I also really like Mortis' art style, there's a good amount of it in the game itself but he's also done a whole bunch of extra art before and after the game of the characters.

>>
>>174816532
well looking at it it's got a nice aesthetic, is it just really hard?
>>
>>174816656
It's hard, yeah, but the kind of frustrating hard where you can't blame the camera.
I couldn't beat the Big Daddy (third or fourth boss) because I kept using the dash move (that makes you invulnerable) only to get into more bullets.

If you want, it's a "die&retry" kind of game, there are no stages, only bosses. You fight them, learn their patterns, learn how to attack, when to defend, and so on. The game is pretty forgiving (you have three lives and you recover one each time you destroy one of the boss' health bar, not to mention you recover life by parrying), but it's designed so that each boss is unique.

For example, my favourite boss, the prisoner. The second one. She has a small flash just before she attacks, so you can block immediately, and there are also baits around the area that you can use to distract her.
The Old Man, the third boss, also has a small flash just before he attacks, but the timing is a bit different, so you have to wait, like, half a second before blocking, or he'll catch you in a recovery state and send you flying.

I was really disappointed in shipwrecked that there wasn't an ultimate ship you could construct out of some endgame boss item that let you build things on it.

Like, you could have a ship with an alchemy engine, fire pit, sleeping quarters, and pretty much live out at sea.

I was almost kinda surprised it wasn't a thing considering there's a character who has a sanity loss for being on land.
>>
>>174858426

I wouldn't mind it so much if it wasn't so fucking easy for your progress to get wiped in DST, and it just seems weird to have the main lore progression be in the multiplayer mode where people just light shit on fire as wickerbottom and willow.

>How does all that DLC even work out?
What, you mean the gameplay?
>>
>>174862512
Yeah, is everything separate or is it all crammed together. Last I saw of the game was beta I think so I've no clue how any of it works.
>>
>>174862781
It's separate. When you make a new world in Don't Starve, you pick between Reign of Giants and Shipwrecked

Reign of Giants is vanilla with more stuff that wants to kill you, Shipwrecked is different. But it also has stuff that wants you dead.
>>
>>174862781
Everything is separated, though you can have RoG.

There's the "real" game, which has release game and updates, then RoG and updates.

Then there's shipwrecked, which is a completely separate game for some god-forsaken reason.

Then there's Don't Starve Together, which is also another completely separate game, which has some things that the normal game doesn't and lacks some things it has. I think they added most of the RoG stuff to DST though.
>>
If they weren't retarded the game would work like this

>One game: Option to make it multiplayer or not
>RoG and Shipwrecked can be active at the same time, with the option to craft something to travel to and from shipwrecked world or start there and go to normal

I don't even know what content they've been working on for years because it's so segregated.
>>
>>174862991
A shame that most mods for DS are uncomplete compared to DST.
The Batter or Neptunia ones that I tried reused Winston's speech in DS, only using custom lines in DST. A bit of a shame, but most efforts seem to be focused on DST.
>>
>>174863075
It's too easy to grief in Shipwrecked, it wouldn't be interesting in multiplayer.
>just remove all the wood on the starting island
>new players are stuck
Not that it's hard to grief in DST, sadly. People picking Woody, and then destroying every fucking thing before disconnecting.
>>
>>174863249
Do they not just have private servers? I had assumed that was the vast majority of what people used it for.
>>
>>174862906
>>174862991
You can have both a Reign of the Giants and Shipwrecked game, you just can't like, organically go between the two worlds. You can build or find an amusement park ship to take characters between them

I don't know if they're ever gonna add shipwrecked to DST, but it seems so weird to throw the focus on dst so soon after shipwrecked was released. Like there's still an ongoing ARG with Charlie and all that.

Is there an /indie/ server for dst by any chance?
>>

Of course I'm speaking for public servers.

Well, blame Charlie for that.
Don't forget that your character is still a prisoner trying to survive, you're not a visitor watching new world. There's a point to not being in control of the situation.

The Seaworthy.

You build it (or find it), and can travel between a RoG world and a Shipwrecked world.

That's Warly. He has a portable crock pot and a chef pouch that acts as a mini fridge, plus access to exclusive recipes. He gains 1/3rd more health, hunger, and sanity from stuff cooked in crockpots but gets only partial benefits from raw/fire cooked foods, and the benefit shrinks if he eats the same food too many times consecutively

Is that general also about console games? I have a couple of questions and, well, I'll just ask them directly.

A few years ago, I was owning a Playstation. The original one. And on that console, I was owning Medievil. A very nice game and stuff. But I was also owning an Action Replay.
And by exploring the game's files, I found a couple of strange thing : a song that I haven't found in the game, and a few fmv that I never saw.
Upon inspecting the cheat menu, I found out that all of these were definitely in the game, since I could listen to the song through the cheat menu.

>It would be nice to merge them into the same client IMO
I get the impression that Klei team can't code for shit, or at least don't have the discipline to do that properly, and copy-paste their code bases every time they intend to make major addition.
I already whined about it before, and will whine again: setting up a DST server is actual nightmare. Process is so poorly documented (there are just bits and pieces of some info on wikia) and unnecessary convoluted (game uses lua configs that just silently fail if you make a mistake, you have to set up multiple instances simultaneously because same server can't host overworld and caves in the same game, etc.), the fact that you need to get CD keys for server is retarded, etc.
They also had a problem with linking to wrong crypto library name, that would cause their client/server to (almost) silently fail auth, rendering game unplayable.
Also DST and DS have different Steam workshops, plus they've managed to break support for existing mods multiple times.

DS is an okay game but I'll probably avoid other Klei titles in the future because of shit like that.

>Mistake #1 - Steep Learning Curves: Tim Cain thinks character creation in Fallout, Arcanum and other RPGs was too complex. He's experimenting with creating a completely numberless character system that uses geometric shapes to visualize attributes.
>Mistake #2 - Letting Math Trump Psychology: Revealing the influence of the years he spent developing Wildstar, Tim wants to develop mechanics that are psychologically satisfying and addictive, even at the expense of mathematical elegance. For example, he says the player's first attack against an enemy should always hit even if his overall hit percentage is the same regardless, and that rather than allow players to increase their critical hit chance, they should only be allowed to increase their critical hit damage.

To be fair, the fact that Fallout isn't dead already is a miracle.

>>174881563
Meaty character creation with more "roleplay" stats instead of pure combat skills is the best thing about RPGs. I hate it when you just have the equivalent of physical attack/defense and magical attack/defense, and maybe an arbitrary speech skill that works universally. I love how Caves of Qud works where you choose mutations and they affect your relationship with different races (choose wings and birdpeople will prefer to associate with you, but choose thick fur and primates will). They all have practical gameplay purposes so it isn't pure gameplay but having the game react to your decisions is what makes an RPG an RPG.

How can one man, who's been involved in so many good games, end up with such shit opinions?

It's a bummer that sniper rifles and sledges are not usable though.

I mean, snipers can always switch to whatever sidearm they are using, but sledge builds seem fucked. They can't use knives/unarmed since they both lack the feats and there will be a heavy penalty for using them.
>>
>>174904880
I'm not too worried about snipers, they have enough options to adapt. Sledge kind of got shafted, but we don't know the machete feats yet, maybe they can be decent substitutes.

I'm more worried about stealth-reliant builds, like stealth knifers, since I very much doubt jet skis allow much room for stealth, unless there is some special type with built in cloaking.

Also trappers and possibly throwers might have a hard time too.

95 / 415.7 = 0,2285301900408949 ≈ 0,23 ( used carry weight/max carry weight ratio)

0,23*100%= 23% ( how much of the carry weight is being used)

Now, if we assume the % of carry weight that being used works as a negative speed modifer:

115% - 23%= 92%

250 * 92% = exactly 230.

My assumption is almost surely correct. The % of carry weight that is being used counts as a negative speed modifer.

I wonder if it will work that way in all cases. Will a jet ski that is using 100% of its carry weight be reduced to measly 15% speed?
>>
>>174908481
Sounds correct, yeah.

If this is the case, than it will be interesting to see if the player's weight has any effect on the speed as well.

To me it looks like the jet ski has its separate window that doubles as both inventory and combat stat window, and the player still has access to his regular inventory as well.

So how does the game handle if you carry tons in your regular inventory instead of the jet ski's? What if you, but not the jet ski, are encumbered?

>If this is the case, than it will be interesting to see if the player's weight has any effect on the speed as well.
That would make a lot of sense actually. 415 weight seems like a lot, way too much to be a separate container in addition to your own carry weight.

The carry weight formula for PC is 100 + STR, so it's safe to assume most builds you will be carrying around 150 worth of gear and loot most of the time. Maybe less, maybe more, a lot less without loot.

That would only be 36% speed penalty, leaving you with 79% of base speed and tons of room for other gear. It's very possible the base speed is very high to make up for this.
>>
>>174868114
>butterflies don't respawn
that's incredibly wrong. They respawn like every day. Stick 10 flowers in an enclosure with a catcoon and you have a butter farm.
>>
>>174909856
I suppose combined weight sounds the most likely, yeah.

Jet skis built for speed will probably offer only limited extra carry capacity, while heavier ones will be like a fucking cart. And the vehicles have their own inventory exactly so that making use of it won't count towards the player's own encumbrance, since it wouldn't make sense to use it combined when you can fight using your normal skills, not just the jet ski's weapons.

But what will determine the base speed/modifier? The frame? The parts? Do the weight of the jet ski's parts too count toward its weight?

And that almost certainly means limitations on accessing the second inventory, maybe even disabled in combat.

I wonder if they will have their own static initiative, or if it's still the player's that counts, or alternatively a mix of both.

And what is stability?

Probably. I kind of doubt all of the stuff in the pic inventory adds up to 95, but who knows how much those two things on the left weight.

>And that almost certainly means limitations on accessing the second inventory, maybe even disabled in combat.
Maybe even disabled while driving.

>I wonder if they will have their own static initiative, or if it's still the player's that counts, or alternatively a mix of both.
I don't think it will affect initiative, doesn't seem like it.

I'm trying to figure that out too. Maybe it has to do with special attacks/abilites.

>I don't think it will affect initiative, doesn't seem like it.
Well, this one only show the base tab, and initiative should be under offense. There is no offense tab here, but since they can have fucking rocket launchers that has to be listed somewhere. And when you use a Dreadnaught, you use its initiative. It stands to reason that the swiftness and maneuverability of your jet ski should affect how fast you can react.

Maybe this is something stability has to do with. How precisely you can control your movement without risking turning over and drowning.
Or maybe not.

It's taking this long because of sprites? Well... I guess it had to be done eventually. And I assume that "eventually" had to be "now" if they wanted the expansion to have new weapons and vehicles.

But I don't know much about art so I don't know how this works. I recall that Styg or Mac mentioned something about 3D models when the topic came up after the weapon announcement, but I was under the impression that Underrail's sprites were always generated from 3D models. So what has changed? Does the game now use the models directly instead of sprites? Or is this just about how the sprites are used by the game, so not everything needs a billion sprites in every possible armor with every possible weapon but can be put together from different parts or something?
>>
>>174927385
Yes using 3d models to then draw the sprites over them is less costy and time consuming but it still eats way more time than just using 3d models.

Jeesh, he took it even farther than Fallout 4. It shows his system is a failure if Spider-Man has "yucky" charisma.
>Mistake #4 - Misunderstanding Randomness: Here Tim lays out his frustration with the sorts of people who can't believe they could miss a 95% chance-to-hit attack three times in a row. His conclusion is that when people talk about "randomness", they often mean selecting a token rather than rolling a dice (ie, events can't repeat themselves).
As mad as I get missing shots in Underrail or XCOM I cant expect to connect hits every single time. I think the new XCOM did it pretty well when you miss high chance shots by acknowledging your shit luck with the in game character's disbelief. XCOM used a linear congruential generator, which many people complain about.

Stardew Valley got the same complaints for using LCG, but there are alternatives like PseudoRNG and Stardew Valley does have a mod to implement one, a mersenne twister. I havent played that much SV, but this seems like a better solution than having forced autodrop or removing randomness as Tim suggests

He takes too many liberties when he talks about the real psychology of randomness and reward and in real life there's evidence to the contrary looking at crit builds in MMORPGs, especially action "MMO"s like Warframe.

>RNG autism
Back in reality, no player will ever see a difference between LCG or any proper pseudo-RNG if it's only controlling hit chances.

The only way a player would ever be able to distinguish between types of RNGs is if:
1. the rng is extensively used by the game systems,
2. they have full source code access and
3. they have the skills to do a cryptanalysis attack to divine the generator state

The above actually happened to DCSS once. They had to get rid of their mersenne twister because it was vulnerable to such attacks.

Knowing this, SV switching from LCG to MT seems stupid. It's nothing but a waste of CPU cycles. You get statistically better randomness which you will never notice in real life (unless the LCG implementation is particularly bad), but the RNG is still not cryptographically secure.
>>
>>174935079
Isn't Cataclysm DDA slow dev too, though?
>>
>>174955004
Im also skeptical if the differences between RNG and PRNG can even be detected, but I did understand the feeling of non randomness in Tim's example with music. To set a music player to random for 500+ tracks and getting the same song twice within an hour or 2-3 tracks from the same album back to back is weird. That's why most music players differentiate between random and shuffle, but the latter can still happen.
>>
>>174955874
>if the differences between RNG and PRNG can even be detected
It doesn't matter in this case because all vidya (and practically all software as well) use pseudo-RNGs. Deterministic hardware cannot into true randomness.

Anyways, comparing the quality/randomness of different vidya RNG algorithms is just... RNG autism.
The generated numbers might as well be hardcoded. Most players would never know the difference. The common way RNGs are seeded (current system timestamp) already provides more than enough randomness for non-competitive vidya purposes.
>>
>>174881563
>completely numberless character system that uses geometric shapes to visualize attributes.
Are toddlers the target audience? Because it sure fucking looks like it.

Also, a "numberless system" is quite literally impossible, regardless of what form of representation you use it's still going to be based on numbers. It's like saying FPSes don't have stats. They do have stats, they are simply hidden.

Infinity Franchise is, without a doubt, cooler than any gang from Painful or Joyful. Kinda makes it hard to believe it's fan-made.

So, what do you think the "last fold to Infinity" does to a human being?
>>
>>174953596
Players who are not interested in complex systems or at least fine with them from the very beginning are not going to be interested in them at all. They were not potential players to begin with.

And if you dumb everything down to attract those players, you are going to lose the original audience. You can't have your cookie and eat it too. It's not rocket science.
>>
>>174958610
Cain said he might consider putting an "under the hood" option for advanced players that gives them the full stats and numbers. I think a system like this could work if the geometry was just a more advanced build preset selector.
>Think of an RPG like a mountain. In my older RPG's, the only way to the top was going up cliffs, but many of you like rock climbing so it didn't matter. But a lot of people never even tried to do it. So I am building a road that lets people drive to the top of the mountain. The mountain is still as high as it used to be and the view is just as spectacular, but now more people can enjoy it.
I dont know if this blue ocean approach has ever worked once, that one Galyonkin article shows its pretty much impossible. If he truly believes in making simple systems he needs to design it to best benefit the core player, not appeal to a wider playerbase.
At least he's aware of the community's negative reaction and responding to criticism on RPGCodex.

The thing is climbing that mountain is an essential part of the experience and there is no way to satisfy both audiences. As I said, can't eat the cookie and have it too.

It's like saying "we lost potential players interested in bananas because we made an apple, so from now on all of our apples will be covered in banana peels so everyone can enjoy it". In the end no one will enjoy it, the banana crowd will eventually figure out it's not actually a banana while the apple crowd wanted a normal apple, not some peel-covered abomination.

Numberless RPG systems have been done before, though.
But of course there's going to be numbers under the hood; that's obvious. Everything digital you've ever seen in your life is literally nothing but a vast stream of binary numbers.

Even Richard Garriott used to think stats only serve to distract you from roleplaying. Unfortunately some of his worst games adhere to this minimal numbers philosophy (Ultima IX, Ultima VIII to lesser extent) but also Ultima Online in some aspects. In UO you could see and control your skill percentages but other than that numbers were minimal. No weapon damage numbers and so on.

The lack of numbers made none of those games worse (nor better), it simply fit in unobtrusively. Perhaps it did shape the gameplay experience and how you thought about the games, hard to say for sure.

easy access to like 3 different biomes full of important resources like beefalo and stones in like a 10 second walk, a pig village down the road, some spiders and bees slightly higher which made it really easy to get the pigs to farm silk for me. Plus the pig king meant really easy gold with all the meat.

Good for you. Meanwhile I'm at Day 7 and I still haven't found beefaloos.
How quickly you can get fucked if you don't find manure/gold is annoying. At least gold can be found in graveyard or traded with the king, but manure is rare.
>>
>>174969940
Not finding gold really screws you, and in the long run you really wanna find the pig king to make lightning rods and fridges and all that, it's really easy to run out.

Why manure though? I never really bother too much with setting up a farm since winter is typically the next season and a farm won't be much good, I do try to set up near Beefalo to have a food source though.
>>
>>174970145
You have several sources for gold, so you have an easier time finding it. Well, enough to build the first science machine, you'll want to find the pig king to make golden tools.

Because I rely on farms a lot to avoid aggravating beefaloos. I find it easier to just use their manure to grow stuff rather than attack them.

Also, is it just me or did they upgrade frogs? You could circle around them earlier, they would only attack in a straight line. Now they attack in a circle.

>Yeah, but compared to Minecraft, you can play Don't Starve without having a wiki page opened next to it.
There's a lot of stuff you have know about beforehand to be prepared for, that's basically the main theme of the game. If you don't know about anything in this game, really, it has a good chance of killing you.

I don't really mind that. There is some fun in exploring the game that way. My problem with the game is the amount of preparation you have to do every time you restart, it turns into a chore. Good thing this game has modding/world settings.
>>
>>174979123
But you can still go in blind and learn from your mistake, it's not like there is obscure shit that nobody explain.Your character himself will tell you that you need to light a fire, if you hover over it, it'll tell you what you need, complete with names and shit.

The only stuff that may be troubling to a new player are the hounds and the portals.

>My problem with the game is the amount of preparation you have to do every time you restart, it turns into a chore.
That sure sounds like awful game design. Are games designed to be played with wikis these days?

And talking about that, it is weird that Minecraft is often praised for accessibility when in reality its crafting recipes basically require a wiki check.

Hell, even after years of playing on and off I find myself checking crafting recipes every time I return to the game, because using a 3x3 grid to represent objects just doesn't make sense beyond certain level of complexity.
>>
>>174980804
No, he means that Don't Starve is centered on developping your tools to optimize your ressources.
That means building a base and various science tools to develop armors, weapons, protection. And building a base requires specific ressources (stone, manure, gold) that are complicated to get at first.
It also doesnt help that, by default, you're on a time limit before winter.
>>
>>174976636

Are there any HM/RF titles that can't be easily emulated on even the most ancient rigs at this point? The only things coming to mind are the 3DS titles and even they'll be accessible to everyone fairly soon given the recent advancements in 3DS emulation. Even if you exclude those there are plenty of objectively better designed titles up for grabs.

>>
>>174980804
Only obtuse recipes you'll need a wiki for are cooking recipes, which aren't critical.
Crafting gives you list of required items through UI and is intuitive.
It's also very easy to remember everything else about the game because everything else usually kills you.

So technically you don't need to have a wiki open.

My complaint is about restarts after death, though they can be circumvented through mods and world options.
It's a game where you'll die relatively easily because you didn't know that X happens (e.g. you get attacked by a pack of hounds after a few in-game days, if you didn't craft simple armor & weapon by that time, they might kill you)
So you die, your world is wiped (with default settings), and you restart with newfound knowledge (e.g. craft weapons early) and make more progress. And deeper you are into the game, more progress you lose and more stuff you'll have to build/craft all over again once you die or lose your stuff (it's relatively easy to lose all your base in the game) due to a new surprise. It's fun to get killed by the hound attack (no, it really is, I'm not being sarcastic) and it's fun to beat them next time. But every time you restart you'll have to deal with them, and it's neither challenging nor new at this point. Every time you restart you have to build same essential buildings, farms, chests, etc.

Again, this can be circumvented with different hosting options or by installing mods that make the game easier, so it's not a dealbreaker. But it's supposed to be the intended way to play the game and I'm just complaining about this design choice. Otherwise the game is fun, and I personally got a good number of hours from both base game and DST.

And the blue guy right there in the cover pissed me off to no end. The guy is focused on melee combat, but he joins your crew at almost the end of the game. At that oint you have a good, strong group and the enemies start flying around constantly. Melee doesn't work against flying things.

>How does Hollow Knight's works?
When you die, you're placed at the last bench you sat at, you can unlock benches by paying money, defeating a boss, or some are free. After dying you will lose all your money while retaining everything else and have your max MP reduced by between 1/3rd and 1/6th and you can only chain 2 heals at a time instead of 3. After dying you can go back to where you died where you will find a "dark stain" (game's words) you left behind in the form of a shadow version of yourself which depending on the stage of the game you're at will either attack you using your attacks until it dies in 2-4 hits (or 1 from your special weapon) or stand there waiting to be killed in 1 hit. After you kill it, you get your lost money back and your max MP is returned to normal. If you die before recovering it, the Shade moves to the new death site and all currency on the first Shade is lost. You can bitch out and pay an NPC in a consumable to teleport the Shade to you.

I haven't played harvest moon personally, since it was not popular in my country (which console was it even for)
so I can't it in on that, but honestly I thought this was pretty polished, very well paced,
the only limiting resource being gone itself, and every season starts is busy time while the season end being relaxed reaping what you sow time
as I've said, my only complaint is not going into more depth with the relationships

Obviously yes, it came at just the right time since the latest real Harvest Moon games, by the original creators not Natsume, were disappointments.

It's probably going to be out this year. It was supposed to be out in early 2017 (so around now) but Styg got a little too carried away.

A polish gaming site did a review with Styg and it just so happens I'm polish so I was able to read it. Styg mentioned the expansion is going to be big, maybe a little too big, it's supposed to be a little shorter than half of the base game. Considering it takes about 60-80 hours to do everything, we are looking at at least 30 hours.

It also seems all the core aspects of the expansion are done by now. I would expect it to be released by the end of 2017.

To me, it feels like a good, solid platform for making HM style games. Multiplayer(if and when it gets implemented) would be an actual Improvement with a capital I if we can shift the framing to a farming family, something Harvest Moon hasn't delved as deeply into.

But it is in itself not a terribly great HM game.

It has a short list of simple but valuable QoL and modding interface improvements that need to be implemented. Without those, it's hard to say in good conscience that it "just needs modders".

and uh, combat needs to be revamped. Entirely.

It's still worth a try.
It's not terribly dumbed down, but it's nowhere near as intricate as DF. Unit micromanagement and combat (which is rather good) also plays much bigger role than in dorf fort.

I played rimworld alpha 14-15 for a short while and it was enjoyable, but its simplicity made me return to DF soon after.

Sorry, I instinctively used French. I meant a scar. A few of my settlers have scars from an encounter with alphacastor (the one that chop down trees) and it gives them permanents happiness malus.

And the first new settler I got accidentally lost both her legs to a missclick. Oh, and she's dead. I buried her, and then dug her body out, and buried her somewhere else.
It was complicated, because people are like "WOAAAH a body next to a grave in the middle of our cotton field, better bury it in the SAME EXACT HOLE I just opened".

Even with shitty gameplay you can't call OFF a 'walking simulator'. The fights are central to the entire thing (it's exactly what the game is about, killing off the ghosts and guardians). And even then there's puzzles.
>>
>>175082442
The problem is that I can't cancel an order. So instead of telling her to move the spooky scary skeleton to another grave, I have to tell her to chop down a tree WHILE I'm asking someone else to prioritize the destruction of the the grave. Only them she will move the corpse to the good grave.

Personally I think the best way to make graphics is either "Follow the aesthetic you want, unless it causes visual interference for players or just looks shit" OR "Can the platform handle the core engine? Yes? Okay, make it look better then".

For games with stupid amounts of things happening (like DF), ASCII is perfectly acceptable and is basically a requirement for larger simulations/low-end PCs. It's just hard to get used to for people new to it.

It was important back when roguelikes were born and there was only text mode, but nowadays people use ASCII because it's just easier to make an ASCII-based game. You don't need artistic work or complex graphical framework, you can just start making the game.

DF has been using graphical mode since it's original release, it's only emulating text mode using bitmap fonts (though later proper text mode has been added, but it works on linux/mac terminals only, I think). It's obviously less resource intensive than a full-blown 3D game, but there's no real performance win over simple yet expressive 2D graphics (which DF actually supports too, albeit not very well, see custom graphic sets for DF; pictured stone soup, not DF).

I know that feel. But you would not be the first one to try to reason with them. One of their members, his name was Stranger or something like that if I remember it correctly, wrote a pretty good defense of Deep Caverns, but it didn't change anything.

And if they don't even listen to their own when it comes to this topic, they sure as fuck aren't going to listen to outsiders. It's just pointless. They don't even understand that this is not about being casual or not, or disagreeing with some design decisions. It's that they take this hatred to absolutely irrational levels, and just won't fucking shut up about it.

I'm starting to think that no matter what new features Styg creates for this game, there always will be people who will react with a

Yeah but that pig keeps going on about how the mushrooms respawn instantly. Like, what? That never happened. Where did he even get the idea?

None of the shroomlings respawn, they just lay in wait around the forest and you can see/avoid them. Only spore turrets regenerate but even that takes 4 turns and it only happens if you haven't killed the pulsating roots yet.

Or saying mushroom forest is pointless. Like, in what sense? Did he somehow miss everything about psimorphs?

The only viable complaint about mushroom forest I've seen is that getting high on spores is extremaly counterintuitive. They are a debuff that decreases your health by quite a bit so you will naturally avoid them and you need a lot of stacks to progress. Those both things combined make it unlikely to figure it out.

I played through DC back in early access and it actually took me at least 15 minutes to progress since I was doing a great job avoiding them, I only got high on them because I started fucking around out of boredom. Thankfully Styg adressed that and made Leo mention that getting high on spores is something you should try, but it's still not that obvious.
>>
>>175104947
I always thought the whole mushroom forest / gate biomass part was designed to be something you don't get without some trial and error.

>six tells you something organic in the forest could help you remove the biomass from gate
>you go in and see the weird mushroom creatures
>okay it has to be those
>its possible to capture latchers in dog crates just like you've already done with borers
>eventually find the organic processor
>you can jam a latcher in it
>it does jack shit
I can't be the only one who did this.
>>
>>175104947
It took me a lot longer than 15 minutes with the original hint. I followed the advice to a t and stayed clear of the spores. But I think the problem was that the big unique looking red mushroom surrounded by four turrets was just too big of a red herring. I thought the puzzle was about figuring out in which order to kill them, or something along those lines, and didn't even attempt to think of a different solution until I've already wasted more than a hour on a false lead. I even tried killing all four in a single turn.

But the new hint sounds very straightforward to me. Maybe it's because I already know the solution, but I don't think I would get stuck like that even if I was playing it for the first time now. And with the new dialogue it is very hard to miss Leo, so you should know the hint by the time you go to the forest.

>>175105569
I didn't even know you can crate borers/latchers first time I played. Or maybe it wasn't even possible back then. Also don't remember any dog crates in DC and those are way too heavy to carry around.

Also, did you know you can crate cats too? You can even jam them in the organic processor. Don't do that.

>>
>>175109519
>Without spoiling, you're supposed to breathe these spores and wake up somewhere else?
Yeah.

It's counterintuitive because spores are actually a stackable debuff that decreases your max HP by a %. You need to stand in a cloud of them for a few seconds per stack until you reach like 20.

Since they decrease your health it's only logical to stay away from them if possible.

Well back in the day Leo didn't say anything about waking up at a different place, as a matter of fact he discenocuraged you from inhaling them.

So not only did you stay away from them because it's logical to avoid a health decreasing debuff, you also had an NPC giving you even more of a reason to think there is another way to progress.

Most complaints about DC were made shortly after it was added. Tons of people played Underrail in early access, the game was content complete and very close to release after DC was added.

It went through quite a bit of changes since then. Burrowers outside Arke used to respawn, making re-routing the power a pain in the ass. Eye of Tchort used to last 20 or 30 seconds so you had so stay in the hatches a lot longer. Leo gave you pretty much no useful clues whatsoever, Six never mentioned Leo existance, etc.

The thing is runes in Gothic for example do fit into the setting. Everyone is aware of their existance and they are hardly out of place.

In Underrail on the other hand a mere earthquake is enough to paralyze all communication. Portals don't fit into this. And the idea that only the PC is able to use them like >>175114328 suggests is making him into a too much of a special snowflake if you ask me.

Sure, he's a special snowflake already, he's destined to kill Tchort, he's the Invictus, etc. but it's down to earth. No supre powers, nothing out of the ordinary, nothing other people are not technically capable of. He's s badass chose one but other than that he's a normal guy.

Well, it is a real thing but the tribal coolers in Rimworld aren't very realistic.

Actually, the whole temperature system in Rimworld is terrible compared to Dwarf Fortress. It's grossly oversimplified. I'm completely disillusioned after experimenting/documenting the heat mechanics in alpha 15. tl;dr rant ahead.

The only temperature-related stat materials have is ignition point. No specific heat capacity, no heat/cold damage points, no melting points, no boiling points. Just one crude point at which the material starts burning.

Heat itself is only a property of indoor rooms (not tiles, and outdoors have their own weather-based temperature) and not tracked in any more detailed way. Any fire burns at technically infinite temperature, adding heat to the room it burns in, until the room heat reaches a hardcap of 2000 degrees centigrade or the fire burns out.

Outdoor fires use a different system, the fire objects just copy themselves to adjacent flammable tiles and heat generation doesn't happen since outdoor temperature is a fixed property of current weather.

Naturally, trifle details like oxygen are not considered. Fire simply burns in small enclosed spaces as long as there is fuel. Being a scifi game about planetary colonization, Rimworld could do a lot of interesting things with oxygen.

He did not gain anything on the accessibility front by making this particular system mechanically much worse.

Like many others of his design decisions, it had to be done because he couldn't get a system as complex as DF run at adequate framerates while also handling rendering and audio in the same thread.

I want to call it incompetence, but to be honest he's doing a decent job at his overall goal of making a casual DF clone. The core gameplay is fun and the game is bad only if you compare it with DF.

>>175164550
Given you can't have divers, adding oxygen to the mix would only complicate the game further and make it impossible to put a fire out if it were to happen in a corridor.

Through closing all the doors to kill it like I did in Faster Than Light would be pretty fun.

No idea. I think that a new fast travel system is pretty major stuff, but we take that and fireplaces off the board then we have basically nothing. I could try to come up with new features, but that would be pretty pointless. Although Styg mentioned he wanted to expand on the player house to make it more worth spending the time and money on. Maybe this is it.

>Another big theme, does he mean other than Black Sea?
I'm not sure, could be just the Cthulhu cultists. The original announcement blurb only talked about the tribals and the pirates. We saw that one screenshot, and the Polish interview had that "an ancient evil awakens" line, but I don't think this was really talked about yet.

>Who is Nikola's avatar?

Nah, it's a very minor thing, mechanically speaking. Nothing new to program, just a bunch of assets and dialog scripts. At least that's what I've dug up from the game files so far. I don't think Styg even worked on it. And this part fits it perfectly:

Even in Rimworld, dogs are pretty retarded.

Look at this yorkshire. She got into more fights than my other colonists (except when an alpaca went mental and broke someone's arm), fighting barbarians, waspmen, angry racoon, alphacastors, alpacas, and yet managed to survive with only her tail and nose broken.
But somehow, she decided by being alive was overrated, so she went and ate some castor remains that were rotting in the dump.
Several time.
Getting a stomachache and a intoxication each time.

Also I'm going to switch to English, I'm tired of having some stuff being in French and some other stuff still being in English. I don't know if sandstone is grès or ardoise.

Well, it was like, I asked the devs wtf these symbols are and they just teased me. So I took a look myself.

But I'm trying to be considerate - I haven't spoiled anyone else about their workings. I wish I hadn't accidentally spoiled myself on that. I just blurted out the name teleport rift (which might or might not be misleading) and how many there are in the base game areas when somebody ITT was looking for them.
>>
>>175170057
Wait, but that was only days after the patch came out, and I'm almost certain no one made a thread about them on codex, steam, or the official forums. Did you see the markings and instantly PM the devs? And why did you resort to data mining when they refused to tell you? How could you think you wouldn't spoil yourself? What the fuck?

Yeah bu apparently this just isn't enough for some s̶c̶r̶u̶b̶s̶ players.

I'm perfectly content with how things are. Metro and boats are a good fast travel system, every major location is next to a train station/port and it fits into the game world seamlessly.

Tell me just one thing then, because you surely know the answer. Please. Can the two-headed mutant be even found in the game that is available to us right now? Have you made a mistake when you teased us about finding it? Have I wasted my time chasing something that doesn't even exist for us yet?

>So in other words there is literally no reason not to use ARs as a secondary on sniper builds

>Wasted opportunity to make SMGs/pistols
great again
Plenty of reason, but I'm salty about this too.

As I said I wish ARs were unusable on jet skis as well just for the sake of consistency ( if sniper rifles are too unwieldy to be used while driving then so should assault rifles since they are 2-handed as well and even have a higher STR requirement). Crossbows get a pass since their skill and feats doesn't allow them to use any other weapon effectively.

But still, pistols have a number of advantages as a secondary for snipers. Compared to ARs:

1. They give +7 initiative with Gunslinger, add +5 from Paranoia and you can easily reach 30+

2. Can use Kneecap Shot, arguably one of the best feats for kitting melee enemies, life saver vs Carnifex

3. Sharpshooter works with pistols but doesn't work with ARs- since it's a must have on sniper builds, it effectively means all pistols will have 30% more crit damage while focused.

4. Doesn't have any STR requirement- this not only saves you one attribute point (inb4 eat rathound barbeque- with pistols you can eat burrower burgers/ hopper steaks instead for more HP/MPs) but also is an absolute life saver when you get hit by Crippling Strike.

5. No move penalty compared to 5% penalty ARs have. This is pretty negligible all things considered.

6. This one is actually pretty meta and not obvious at first- 9mm is probably the most effective caliber for pistols while 8.6 is the most effective for assault rifles, by that I mean the optimal AP cost with speed reloader.

This is an advantage for pistols because special 9mm ammo is much, much better than 8.6 special ammo.

9mm deals 10-20 acid damage (pretty much no enemies but mutants, acid hunters and chemical agent have acid resistance) on every hit (on average 15 points of damage per hit) and require only 35 chemistry to make.

Linearity works well for story driven games. You still can backtrack for optional dialogue though like all the way back to the flower before the final boss.

>>175173408
Meanwhile 8.6 deals 20-40 heat damage (resisted by tons of enemies, every other NPC wears aluminized armor) and it has only 35% chance to trigger, so it's less reliable and only 10,5 points of damage on average. Also requires 60 chemistry and napalm C is far harder to find in big amounts that acid.

All other advantages are mostly frame specific but this even out.

On the other hand, AR advantages are:

1. Less AP cost and bursts allow for much more shots per turn. This in turn means much more damage, but not as much as one might think.

2. Can dump DEX to 3 while pistols pretty much need to set it to 7.

This means they have 3 attribute points (4 - 1 point into STR) to spend on something else, but this will hurt their throwing/traps/lockpicking and make them unable to take point shot, quick tinkering, escape artist, all great feats, the last one can be replaced with siphoner tabis though.

I can't think of anything else that isn't frame-specific. I don't see damage as a top priority on a secondary and pistols are actually not that far behind.

3 attribute points are nice but I already struggle with skill points on sniper builds as is and always make use of lockpicking/throwing/traps so it kinda evens out.

Yup, the two-headed mutant encounter seems to work in 1.0.2.4 as it should. To be honest, I also had trouble finding it the first time. Not so much now that I know how.

Don't waste too many sanity points chasing it. It's not like the spawns you're used to. It's just a stupid teaser for an upcoming feature that is already fully implemented but not yet enabled, except that mutant.

I'll spill the beans when it's time.

RPGmakers in a nutshell.

It's great for quickly pushing out games in the familiar rpgmaker pattern, but when you want to deviate from the established basics it takes more effort than a newbie developer might expect.

But there's a wealth of rpgmaker scripts and assets for various purposes, at least in japanese. I don't know much about the international rm community though.
