I didn't exactly do any kind of "hacking" either. The most complex bit was just hex editing some files for the depacker, which I already posted a few weeks a go (so anyone could look at the scripts), while the rest was basically rubbing some tools together and fumbling around for a bit since I don't know jap. The most time consuming part was finding the matching jap sentence in the scripts, since I had to get a text hooker to work to do a search with the exact text.
The images were a red herring, since I spent an hour messing around with them and while they seem important for the phone text (deleting them throws up a missing file error and using dummy files gives blank text boxes) it seems it still uses the text in the script to select from them.
If this is the kind of thing they were saying would cost lots of money then anyone with a bit of technical know how could get hired as a "hacker".
Also it seems there is a limit in the amount of text you can fit in, but the text box isn't a fixed in height (until the limit) and it should still probably be enough for your needs and if need be you could probably add in a extra script line to fit it in a new box. The backlog has a slight bit more room but it also has a hard limit it seems.

There actually aren't a whole lot of translated VNs without any kind of story, moege is a pretty controversial term to be honest and not a lot of VNs that people mention being moege fit into the category. With that said, there are a few translated that you should avoid but if you're starting out with VNs then people will generally not direct you towards them.

If the translator isn't desperate for money, they will charge at least 1 cent per character. A long VN will have at least a million characters or, potentially more. So you're looking at $10,000+ for long VNs.
As far as I know there are no translators currently taking commissions so you're shit out of luck and are gonna have to hope strangers on ULMF are reliable I guess. By the way, 1 cent is bottom of the barrel. That's what even an amateur would charge. Being worse at translating doesn't make it easier or less of a huge time expenditure. If someone charges $2,500 for a long VN they're probably either scamming you or will drop out midway, or are being super lazy to the point you don't want anything they're giving. This is specifically about "fairly long" btw.
Now if a translator IS desperate for money they will accept any price that will cover their rent and food. So you can drive them down pretty low.

There was no exposed code to modify. All the script files are just text and static references to the CG and BGM and everything else is obscured behind the exe so good luck with that.

I am currently looking at the images that hold the text and it seems each character is specified to be 20x20 and so you get the space from that. With a bit of work it might be possible to modify the coordinates in the xml I guess.
All the English text was being fetched from _mj_SE20_0000.g00 after testing by deleting it and it throwing up missing file errors when trying to display anything I typed.
